First iPod (Nano) - anything I need to know??

I just placed an order for a refurbished iPod Nano for my girlfriend for Christmas. I have never really held an iPod, much less owned or ordered one before.
Is there anything I, or my girlfriend, needs to do to it straight out of the box? I know every time I buy a new computer I do a fresh OS install, calibrate the battery, etc. Any special procedures like these for the iPod Nano I need to know about?
Thanks!

Ah, thanks. I didn't even see that little link down there last night. Duh

Recently purchased my first Apple product (ipod touch) and am needing to know how to transfer music from other ipods and other itunes accounts. Can this be done? I have plugged in another ipod into my new itunes account and it will not let me transfer the music that it contains into my new account. Any/all help is much appreciated. Thank you!

how can i add videos, movies and tv shows episodes to my ipod nano?I want to know whether i can directly add them through my pc or not without downloading them from i tunes store?

Yes, you can add your own videos to iTunes, then sync them to your nano, subject to supported max resolution limit and file type.  The specs for the 7th gen nano says (I don't know which nano model you have), Video Format Support
"H.264 video: 720 by 576 pixels, 30 frames per second; Baseline, Main, and High-Profile level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 256 Kbps; 48kHz; stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 Mbps, 720 by 576 pixels, 30 frames per second; Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 256 Kbps; 48kHz; stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats"
    http://www.apple.com/ipod-nano/specs.html
(earlier nanos have lower max resolution limits)
So, "HD" video is too high resolution, so iTunes will not sync such videos to the iPod (although they play in iTunes).  If you are asking how to set up iTunes to sync videos in general (regardless of source), please post back.

There are lots of tips we could give you (KaeBFly has already covered the basics for you, though), but here's something that can cause a lot of issues.
Although it isn't exactly something you need to know when you get your iPod out-of-the-box, it might come in handy someday if you remember what to do if this happens to you...
IF YOUR IPOD GETS WET OR FALLS INTO WATER:
First of all, although I know it is quite a natural reaction, please DO NOT turn on your iPod; this will most likely short out your iPod's circuit.
    Then...
1 - Turn the "HOLD" switch on your iPod to the On position (the switch area will be orange-colored).
2 - Carefully dry off the outside of your iPod, wiping off the majority of the water on the outside (be sure to dry it around the click wheel area).
3 - Leave your iPod in a dim, dry room/area for 4 days to a week.
4 - After about a week, connect your iPod to a charging adaptor for 1 hour (if you do not have one, your computer's cord should to fine).
5 - Restore your iPod to factory setting through iTunes.
If you have any specific questions or problems with your iPod, I'd be glad to try to help you out.
    Enjoy the iPod!

  • Windows XP Media Center Edition does not suport ipod nano...need programs

I was just informed by Apple Service that Windows XP Media Center does not support ipod nano, but that there are online programs available that would allow me to use my ipod with Windows XP Media Center. Does anyone know of these porgrams?? If so, could you recommend a website? Thanks!

was just informed by Apple Service that Windows XP Media Center does not support ipod nano
    Correct. Sort of.
Windows Media Center is not a computer. Just as Mac OS is not a computer. It is a operating system. (a version of Windows XP).
You have a PC with Windows XP Media Center.
You cannot use Windows Media Center OS to load the iPod.
You need to load iTunes to manage the iPod.
And yes, you can use the iPod Nano on Windows XP Media Center.

  • IPod Nano 6th Gen needs a restore every day...?

My iPod Nano 6th Gen works well for arond 24 hours but every morning when i wake up it says it needs to be restored using iTuunes.
When I restore it, it works perfectly. No problems at all. I can fill it to capacity with music and it works all day. The next morning, the battery is still really close to fully charged, but the iPod is in recovery mode. I've scoured the internet but haven't found anyone with a similar problem.
Generally, I've read about iPods that will not restore, or that, even after a restore, will remain in recovery mode, which is indicative of moisture or some other malady.
This Nano has been well cared for and is in flawless condition in every way aside from the condition mentioned. Not even a scratch or smudge. I'm baffled.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem? I love to use the smaller ipod when running or bike riding, but am stuck restoring it each day I choose to use it over my Classic 160's.
    Any help is appreciated.

Ok, here is a bit of an update on the issue.
For the last two mornings, when the Nano says it needs a restore, I've hard reset it (holding down both the select/menu and volume down button simultaneously), then, when the apple logo shows, I held down the menu and the volume up button simultaneously, which then restores the ipod back to functioning properly (I think I read that this is supposed to put the ipod into disk mode, which it doesn't do on this Nano, obviously).
Aside from being annoying as all get up, I suppose the ipod is working, so it's a minor victory.
Still, does anyone know why this might be happening every single night? The battery is still completely charged and once I do the aforementioned sequence, the ipod works perfectly until the next day.

  • I have OS X 10.4.11 and I just got home with my new ipod nano and I need to update my OS! How do I do this?

I have OS X 10.4.11 and I just got home with my new ipod nano 6th generation and I have after searching threads etc discovered I need to update my OS! How do I do this - all of the posts on this subject are a bit out of date I think? I have a mac book pro 2.2 so I know I can run Leopard, I just have no idea how to get it...? Please help!

Check your Mac against hardware specs to find out what version of OS X you can upgrade to.
Then buy DVD for that version.

  • Migrating from Powerbook G4 to Macbook Pro - Anything I need to know?

I'm about the begin the process of migrating from one computer to the other. I have cleaned/tidied up my powerbook, tossing old files and making sure all is in order.
Is there anything special I need to know?
Here are my specific questions before I get started:
    1. Email/Calendar: currently on powerbook, I'm using entourage for email and calendar. Basically I like the calendar system because back a few years ago when I was needing a calendar, the entourage calendar made more sense to me. I've heard that "Mail" is much better these days. Is it? Can I import my current email settings in powerbook/entourage into MBP/mail and be good to go? Will my calendar import or will I need to start over? Do you recommend the calendar system in MBP or should I keep entourage. Let it be known: I HATE ENTOURAGE. ABout twice a day, it crunches and "freezes" while it does something behind the scenes and during that time, I can do nothing with EMAIL. Bleh on MS.
    2. I know I will use the migrate wizard in utility folder. Will it move my applications or will I need to reinstall photoshop, etc? Will it move my keychain (embarassingly enough, I require this tool as I can't remember the gazillion passwords I have)? Will it move my settings?
    3. Anything else I need to be aware of in the process?
    Thanks for your help!
Sign me, Thrilled with a new MBP with Leopard!

If you could copy you mail and ical data over and not use the migration software. You would have possibly a more stable machine.
If you was going intel to intel then migration would be OK, but you going PPC to intel and you dont want it moving over any odd PPC app. You really want it to run all intel versions.
You can copy the folder and pref files that are on your old Mac over to the same locations on the new one and it will all work OK, keychains you would need to just make a not of the passwords and add them again.
We tend to only use the migration as a last resort to ensure the best possible migration we copy only required data and files manually and re install any third party apps as most put to many files all over the place that makes copying them tricky. Then try and make sure you have all intel version of any of your old third party apps to stop ressetta kicking in and eating up your free RAM.
If you can do this then your not moving any redundant files across, a clean system is a better system.

  • Can I use windows Me/98 with my ipod nano and I need itunes help??!!

    Hey!!,
Ok so I just recieved my Ipod nano today from the post man! and I want to use it with windows Me/98 is that possible?
I also downloaded the newest version of itunes and it said that "itunes requires that your computer is running windows
2000 or windows XP".Can I use a later version of itunes with me ipod nano and where can I download it from ?!
someone please help me Im dying to use my ipod nano!!

You cannot use iTunes under Windows 98/ME. For just synchronizing tracks with your iPod, you could get a third-party utility such as Anapod, Ephpod, or Xplay for handling the transfer. I haven't used any of these and I don't know if any support the new iPod nanos, so I can't make any recommendations. These applications cannot connect to the iTunes Music Store, so unless you upgrade, you won't be fully supported and will not be able to purchase tracks from the iTMS.
I strongly suggest you consider upgrading your version of Windows, though. Windows ME is no longer supported by Microsoft and it's going to get harder and harder to find applications that will work under 95/98/ME.
    Hope this helps.

  • I have the very first iPod Nano, and it doesn't work anymore. Can I recycle it or trade it for a newer one?

I got this iPod a really long time ago. And when I pluged it into my computer it doesn't unlock and it doesn't let me turn it off or anything.
I've tried to do the iPod replacement but it says that my iPod isn't a part of it. But my friend has the same kind of iPod as mine and it went through.
Can I trade it in or recycle it for a newer one?

The Problem With Your Ipod Is That It Is Not Unlocked , To Unlock It You Have To Install Itunes And Plug It Into Your Computer , Then It Will Be Automatically unlocked .
No, You Cannot Recycle Your Ipod Because Ipod Nano 1G does Not Include in the recycling Program
