First Mac... and my initial thoughts.

I'm 27 and getting a late start on school. Specifically for graphic design. About two years ago I realized I needed to be working on a Mac, and last Friday I finally got one!
I decided on the MacBook Pro after considering the fact that I'd be taking it to and from school, and because I really just wanted a notebook. I even bought a refurb MBP with the Core Duo, but returned it because I decided on the Core 2 Duo.
Anyway... so far I couldn't be happier. Moving all the stuff over from my PC was a breeze. There wasn't that much stuff so it didn't take long. I am very surprised at how easy it is to learn the OS and get a feel for it. I bought an Airport Express to use and was thrilled with how easy it was to set up the wireless network. The "just works" phrase is right on so far.
My wife who was a little upset about the price tag forgot all about the money aspect of it when I showed her the book I made in iPhoto of our daughters 3rd birthday. When she realized she wouldn't have to scrapbook any more she decided the Mac was a keeper.
The only test (for me) that remains is installing Adobe CS2. I called Adobe and was surprised when they offered to trade my PC version for the mac version for only $159. Plus it's an upgrade to the full retail version 2.3 instead of my educational version. But I've heard and read about problems installing it on MBP's so I hope I do not run into any of that. I'm also hoping that running it through Rosetta is not that bothersome.
But anyway, I just wanted to post a positive experience here for others to read. So far I'm glad to have joined the club!

My MacBook Pro has the entire creative suite installed on it. There were really no problems. However, please keep in mind that Photoshop CS2 and other adobe applications will be slower on the MacBook Pro and any Mac that has an Intel chip than the ones that have a PowerPC processor. This is because Adobe has not yet made a universal creative suite for the mac. This will happen in time, but things may not work correctly.

  • I got my first mac and wonder what is the max ram capacity?

This is my first mac and I gotten it for school for my animation and visual effects. Since they like using tutorials that uses a lot of mac commands instead of windows so I am doing this so I can easily follow along. I gotten a Apple iMac MD063L from newegg it is coming with 8gb of ram and just wonder if it can go higher like what is the max it could do? I just want to make sure it can handle programs like Maya, adobe after effects but primarily Maya and related programs. When it comes to rendering a project.

That partial part number relates to 3 different refurbished 27" iMacs at NewEgg. All 3 can be upgraded to 32GB of ram. Only buy ram from either OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/  or Crucial http://www.crucial.com/ and avoid the bargain basement brands sold by other vendors. They're all mid 2011 models I believe.

  • I have just bought my first mac and have been told that i can get a free upgrade to lion but it seems that this is only an option in the us and canada, not the uk. is this true?

i have just bought my first mac and have been told in pc world that i can get a free upgrade to lion, but it would appear that this is only for those in the u.s. and canada. is this true? also from reading the discussions it seems that lion is not a good thing. i am already regretting my decision to go to a mac.

I have found that both Linux and Mac (unix) are capable of reading "deep" folders while win 32 will have issues, your it people are clearly wrong.  I run a network with both win/mac. And as long as the win servers/pc's that have shares are set to allow apple file sharing in their folder properties.   And the macs are set to allow smb there should absolutely no trouble with you accessing anything across the platforms, heck, from a Mac to a win pc on some occasions you don't even need to include a "domain" name to log on to, and you can create aliases and make your own shortcuts etc... So you don't have to manually connect each time you boot up etc... But that's all personal preferences I suppose.
All I can tell you is that, I do it on a daily basis managing a small business. So your answer is yes you can.

How did you get your songs onto your iPod Touch?
If purchase directly from iTunes you can download them again.
If your iPod is synced to iTunes on a Windows PC, then, sync your iPod to that computer.
If this is your first Mac, are you migrating from a Windows PC?

  • I just got my first mac and can anyone tell me how to change my address book to look like an actual book?

Just got my first Mac and cant find how to change the appearance of my address book.  Can anyone help?

Check out the built-in Address Book Help guide on your Mac (in Address Book, choose Address Book Help from the Help menu.  I dont think you can change the way the address book looks in terms of changing its appearance to look more book like, but I could be wrong.  I checked out a few google searches and did not find anything that stated how to do what you are asking.  If you find you cant change it to your desired specifications, you can always make the suggestion to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/

  • I just got my first Mac and downloaded Photoshop CC onto it. problem

I just got my first Mac and downloaded Photoshop CC onto it.  I opened my first photo and tried to save.  I get a message that says  " write access in not granted "  what does that mean?  and why can't I save my images?

How is your external drive formatted? Use Disk Utility to check the volume format. If it is NTFS, you will need to reformat the HDD as exFAT in order to retain universal compatibility (RW to it on both Mac and Windows).

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

One of my favorite things about developing for iOS using Xcode is the Simulator. It runs any of the iOS devices simulated right on your Mac. If you don't have a hardware device to test your application on, the Xcode simulator will surely be your best friend.
So to answer your question less vaguely, yes. You can own the iPhone 5s and develop for the 6. There is no real release information of the iPhone 6 at the time anyways, so I would not let it play too large of a factor in your decision.

There are no known viruses for OS X.  If you have to worry about a website putting some malware on your computer, then you should not visit it any longer.  Find a legitimate site.

  • My first Mac and so far I love it!

I just bought a MacBook with OS 10.4.8, and so far I am absolutely besotted with it...I mean, as much as you can love something that's an inanimate object. I have had PCs since I got my very first computer when I started grad school, and I was generally satisfied with them...but when I recently had to call my PC manufacturer to come and install a new motherboard on a less-than-six month old computer...THEN wasted another four hours after that fighting with the antivirus people trying to get that issue resolved...WELL, enough was enough, and off to the Apple store I went.
I'm still on a learning curve for OS as compared to Windows but I've been using Windows for so long I'm giving myself time to adjust. I'm also still working on getting my @X&*( wireless router to work...but that was a problem before I ever got the Mac.
I love the size of my MacBook (so small! so light!) and have been busily downloading music, etc., for an upcoming flight to Seattle. It runs as fast as my desktop (without the pesky bootup problems and never ending battle with the security), I've had no problems with the sound, I bought the Microsoft OfficeMac (so there are some familiar landmarks). I tend to run a lot of applications at the same time when I'm on my computer, and so far I have had very few problems with stalling or freezing.
So...PC to Mac converts, are there any "wish I'd known that with my first Mac" tips you can pass along?
    Thank you!
    A "happy" camper

  • Bought my first Mac and am curious about the learning curve for FCE HD

After 30+ years in the DOS/Windows/PC world, I've ordered my first Mac -- a Mac Pro -- with Final Cut Express HD.
I was wondering if other switchers could give me an idea of the kind of learning curve I'm looking at. I have used Sony Vegas Video almost exclusively for the past 5-6 years.
    Thanks!

I have no experience with Vegas so don't know what the similarities and differences will be.
People like Tom Wolsky (the main contributor to this forum) will be able to advise you on that.
I came from Premiere 6.5 and found the transition reasonably quick and pain-free.
I would suggest that you get an editing workshop book. Tom has written several but of course you will need FCE 3.5.
He guides you easily step by step from the complete basics (connecting the camera etc.) to a high level of editing skill.

While you are there, take a look at the rest of his site, which has a useful FAQ etc.

  • HT1338 I just purchased an iMac and an HP LaserJet M1217nfw printer.  The iMac will not recognize the disc that came with the printer.  What can I do?  This is my first Mac and just might be my last.  Installation has not been fun.  I would appreciate any

I just purchase an iMac and an HP LaserJet M1217nfw printer.  I could not install with the installation disk that was furnished by HP.  This is my first Mac product and I'm just not sure what I'm doing...help!  I don't know if it's a mountain lion, a tiger, or a dog!  The box says OS X. I really need help.  Thanks for your time.

What Mac operating system are you running on your iMac?
    Are you certain they're compatible?
Have you checked with HP to see if there's a newer driver?
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=4 075472
In addition, I haven't loaded on any software with my last 3 printers.  They just work without them, IMHO.
But a current driver would be necessary.

  • My first Mac and questions on TV

So after 12 years of PC, I went ahead and bought my first Mac... a Macbook Pro... things are sooooo different... and simplified...
Seeing the high quality of video display on Mac, I was looking for the following solution -
I would like to (1)Wireless connect my television to my Mac, so I can (2)Watch and (3)Record TV or some portions of the show/news that I watch. This will be of immense help to upload clippings of news or news related information on my website.
Currently my tv has different inputs for the cable and the satellite dish... so please do advise if you have any suggestions whether you solution will have to be separately implemented for the each of them - cable and satellite dish.
My entertainment center is in the living room while my Mac is in the bedroom. I'll be using my Mac for traveling so I was looking to avoid plugging cables and wires to it.
    Is this possible?

It sounds like the Slingbox is a perfect solution for you. With the Slingbox, you can watch and record live TV on your MBP from anywhere with a wireless broadband connection.
The Slingbox offers many different connections for your cable and satellite boxes, including HD. Note that if you want to transmit HD, you'll need the Slingbox Pro.

    Hope that helps. Good luck!
