First mac : Snow leopard or wait Lion??
Hello everyone!
I don't know if I'm in the good category to ask this but I'll try here.
So... I want to have a iMac 27" since long time and I now have the money to buy one. So I was wondering, should I buy one right now with the included Snow Leopard or wait to buy one when the Lion will be out this summer? Or buy now and upgrade with Lion after? I also hear that there will be new iMac too with uncluded Lion so maybe I should wait for new hardware... I really don't know what to do...
I need your advice please..

Look carefully at the specs for the model and chip you're considering.
Some i5 and i7 chips are quad-core (4 processors on one chip).
Like the older Core Duo and Core2Duo chips, all i3's are dual-core, and the i5's in the 13" MacBook Pros are dual-core (2 processors on one chip).
Newer chip designs use smaller internal chip masks, leading to greater performance or lower power consumption (important in battery-powered laptops), or some compromise of both.
So *in theory*, a quad-core 2.93Ghz chip will give you more processing power than a dual-core 3.6 chip. Here's the math: 4*2.93=11.72, and 2*3.6=7.2, but in the real world, your actual performance also depends upon the type of program and the video chipset. I doubt you'd notice any difference at all doing word processing and email. Video editing with a package such as Final Cut Pro would probably see a large difference.

I have a Mac Mini running Snow leapard. I believe i can update it to Mountain Lion but have read I have to first update it to Lion. This is where Im struggling. How do I get a copy of Lion as I cant download it as there is not an App Store on Snow Leapard.

You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.

I currently have Leopard, and there are no longer updates for it. So I must upgrade to either Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion. Without doing so I cannot update my itunes, and my ipod is no longer compatile with my mac. How can I buy the upgrade, since I do not have access to the mac store as that comes with Snow Leopard? I went to Best Buy and they said neither Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion can be bought there.

I have updated my mac from snow leopard to mountain lion 3 days back. I had some important data in my library folder and it got overwritten. Is there any way i can get the data back from my snow leopard library folder?
I tried mackeeper to recover files but it could not. Any other way any one has tried to recover a system library folder after OS upgrade?No, it doesn't store a clone. You would have needed to make one with either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.
If the files were in your ~/Library folder then they may still be there. As I said, you can access it by
going to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library". I wouldn't think an upgrade would overwrite anything in ~/Library.
If you have a Time Machine backup you may also be able to use that to retrieve them. -

Quite seriously, though, if you wish to use MS Office to it's full potential and if you depend on it on a regular basis, then upgrading to Office 2011 is the only reccommended way to go. You can use the free Apps mentioned, learn to use iWorks (which I love, but others don't) or make your system a shambles and lose your easy to use interface by the other method. Deduct the cost of Parallels from MS Office and it becomes pretty cheap, if that is the only PPC program you wish to use, which is the norm as PPC is long gone from development.
MS Office 2011 is not expensive if it is one of your major work tools. Think of those who had to update their Adobe software!

Clayton.Well, it depends on what you expect it to do and if it works as expected - it that answer is yes, I'd say make sure you max out the RAM (I've noticed Snow Leopard needs more). Doing it this way gives you a machine which will run 2 different OS versions - on the other hand, depending on when you'd buy the MBA, you may only be able to run Lion (unless you buy that quickly as well while they still come with SL).

I am running 10.5.8 and want to make use of the icloud changeover, I understand that I must first buy snow leopard 10.6 and then buy lion 10.7. Do I buy these as upgrade versions or full versions? I am not very techie, thanks for any advice.
A 10.5 era machine is better left on 10.6.8
I don't advise upgrading it to 10.7 as you'll have to buy all new versions of software for a older model machine, some are not ready yet and some of your third party driver software may not be available for your other hardware.
10.7 is slower and requires 4GB of RAM actually.
10.8 is being released this summer and it won't run on certain older graphic cards, so shortly you will be behind again.
Save your money for a new 10.8 machine. IMO
These rapid OS X upgrades are for those who like to be on the cutting edge and can afford to buy new hardware often, you didn't even upgrade to 10.6, so your not that sort of person obviously.
But you do need to upgrade to 10.6 for security issues and faster video. It will run your 10.5 Rosetta software, but 10.7 will not.

Trying to upgrade Mac mini server running Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. I downloaded Mountain Lion and about to install but a warning prompt tells me server functionality will be lost until server.app is applied. What is involved in doing that?
What's involved? Buy and load OS X Server; that's now a Mac App Store app.
That'll get you Server.app.
Server.app is the GUI tool that is used to manage recent versions of OS X Server, along with (increasingly) the command line management of the features that are not exposed through the Server.app tool. -
How can I re-install Snow leopard having installed Lion? The disk supplied states that I cannot use the version of 'Install Mac OS X'...HELP!
None of the instructions usually given for downgrading seems to mention the fact that you will lose some data in built-in applications, including at least Mail. When you installed Lion, your Mail database was converted from the format used by Snow Leopard's Mail to that used by Lion's Mail. There is no way to reverse that conversion. Therefore, you will lose your entire Mail database. If your messages are all stored on a remote server, that may not be an insurmountable problem, but otherwise you'll have to restore from the last backup you made before the upgrade, and then you'll still lose all changes to the database made since that time.
Another fact not often mentioned is that downgrading is usually the worst possible solution to a problem with Lion. But that's the answer to a question you didn't ask. -

I would like to upgrade my Mac Mini from snow leopard to maintain lion. The spec says that early 2009 machines are ok but I have bought mine in 2009 and it could have been a 2008 model. Is there a serial number or a utility that I can run to check?

Reinstalling Snow Leopard from Mountain Lion
In another thread, I was getting help with cloning and told to purchase a new external drive to do so. When I went to the Apple store today to purchase an external drive, he actually talked me out of it. I told him my goal was that if I tried Mountain Lion and had problems, I wanted to be able to revert back to Snow Leopard.
He said that, since I have the Snow Leopard Install DVD, that if I didn't like Mountain Lion, I could restore my system by:
1. In Mountain Lion, use the disc utility to erase the drive
2. Do a fresh install of Snow Leopard back on to my system
3. Re-attach the drive I use for Time Machine and install my files from that.
Does that sound correct as an easy way to restore my system from Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard?Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files. -

Now my installed programs:- Quarkxpress 6.5 - Adobe creative suite CS2 - Adobe Acrobat 7.0 professional and Microsoft Office 2004 will not open - I get a banner saying not supported by power mac. Can anyone please help me I really need these programs for my work. Thank you!

i think it is bad new for you. if it's any consilation i went through the same thing when i loaded mountain lion when it first came out. i think the problem is that mountain lion is a pure 64bit operating system and the software you have is 32bit. earlier os's were able to emulate 32bit but the new system does not. the answer is new software. i did it and it cost me a load of money and much angst so your not alone.
