First_nonlogged_scn and Dataguard

How do you do!
Can I ask for help please?
In my DB that created from hot backup I see nonlogged activity - query from view V$DATAFILE returns one row with not empty column first_nonlogged_scn. After validation of data file in view v$database_block_corruption appears two rows,
that corresponds to table and index in non-system tablespace.
Have I right understood that, if I will not recover data base to SCN before first_nonlogged_scn,
this issue is not denger to primary or standby database?
Best thanks,
Pavel

I am find out an answer here
FORCE_LOGGING
" The blocks in that backup will be "clean". "
Also DB that created from hot backup is the outsider of dangers
Thanks
Best regards,
Pavel

  • RAC and dataguard

    With reference to this thread
is Dataguard and standby dbs is HA
RAC and DATAGAURD are two different approches for high availability and desaster recovery.
We are planning to implememt RAC and DATAGAURD but there are budget issues also.
With RAC As i understand we have multiple instances governing a single database. So multiple node/machines governing a single database server.
With DATAGAURD,we have a DR solution at another location. If the primary server fails, standby database takes up the role of primary.
With RAC alone,if any node fails, there is another node to do instance recovery or the server still continues. But what if database server crashes. WIth RAC alone and no dataguard, won't it allow downtime?

    Hi Hashmi,
RAC and DataGuard are indeed different things, as you understood.
Regarding your question, there is no database server, that's the whole thing. There is one database (which resides on external redundant storage like Netapp, EMC, etc.) and there are several servers that are running the instances. Downtime will occur only if the storage crashes. And if you don't trust your storage you can have ASM redundancy, so storage failure will not cause downtime as well.
The down side, is that there is one database, so if you have logical corruption, human error, or something similar you can loose data or have downtime.
However, the high availability is real.
In DataGuard, once the primary is down it takes some time (not long) to activate the standby, but it has a different IP, so you should configure your DNS/clients (in advance or at failover) to connect to the activated standby.

  • Oracle Streams and Dataguard

Does anyone know how to configure oracle streams and dataguard to work together? I've set up an environment which successfully captures and applies records in a streams environment using
    log_archive_config=SEND, RECEIVE, NODG_CONFIG
as soon as I try to introduce the streams setup into a database which already has dataguard setup it begins to get convoluted as setting DG_CONFIG requires you to then set the db_unique_name and it seems that the streams log mining will not work without being fully incorporated into the Dataguard configuration.
Has anyone set up streams in a dataguard environment?

Lets see what's missing from your request:
    1. Oracle version number?
    2. Physical or logical Data Guard?
    3. Which Data Guard mode? Synch or Asynch?
    4. Which Data Guard protection level?
    5. ARCH or LGWR?
    6. Which streams mode? Synch or Asynch?
    7. Hotlog or Autolog?
    8. Streams on the production server or the standby server?
I'm all out of guesses tonight. Please provide enough information for someone to help you.

  • RMAN and Dataguard (10g)

    Hi all,
I know this topic has been discussed several times over on this forum, but I have a peculiar situation.
I have just inherited a client system with 10g and DataGuard with RMAN. The standby is Physical and both nodes are on HP-UX version and patchsets.
The standby is persistently idle. The client insists on backing up the physical standby only.
My question is this, is there any danger in backing up on the physical standby?. I've argued the case that we should backup the Primary and Standby to no joy. I am a little worried that we may experience a failure on the primary and start a recovery with backup taken from the Standby node. Is this feasible at all?
Please confirm that I am right.
    Regards,
    Timothy.

Having a recovery catalog, there's a resync with the standby controlfile after the backup, the backup informations are now in the catalog. Now when you need to restore/recover the primary database you connect to this and to the catalog. Primary and standby are clones , so you access the same record in the catalog regardless whether you are connected to the primary or to the standby. Because of this a resync will refresh the primary controlfile with the backup records which were taken while connected to th standby. A simple backup/recovery example looks like this:
    1) connect target sys/pwd@stdby catalog rman/pwd@rmancat
    2) backup database; (resync happens automatically after this)
    4) connect target sys/pwd@prim catalog rman/pwd@rmancat
    5) resync catalog;
    6) restore database;
    7) recoverer database:
It's not mandatory, but recommended to backup the archivelogs on the primary side. Here you are sure to have all archivelogs (at least under regular circumstances). For many reasons it could happen, you miss some archives on the standby side.
It's possible to run a standby in read-only mode for reporting purposes. In this case archivelog applying is suspended. If you have such a situation it's not recommended to backup the standby database, possibly it does not change for a long time and in case of recovery you have to apply a large number of archivelogs.

  • Tnsnames configuration for RAC and dataguard

    Hi everyone,
I have an environment with RAC and dataguard (production is RAC, standby is single instance) and I was wondering what is the best way to configure the clients (since I have quite a few and I don't want to change their tnsnames if I need to failover to the standby database).
Now, I need to have both RAC nodes of course, the question is what I should do with the standby...
    The problems are:
    1. If I add the standby as another address, 1/3 of the connections will get to it and I don't think it's a good idea
    2. I can disable the load_balance, but then all connections will go to the first node's listener
    3. After a failover, if the RAC nodes are down, it will take a long time to connect (the servers will not respond and the client will wait for timeout if it tries to connect to the RAC nodes first, only after the timeout it will try the standby and succeed)
Any ideas and suggestions will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Liron

    Hi Robert,
I agree that the standby should be up, but you have to admit that if it is down it should not delay connections to the primary...
About the DNS, it's not that I don't trust the SA, but this is an environment for a customer so it should be as independent as it can be. So the failover process will be easy and fast. I don't know if I can get DNS permissions, but that's a good idea...
A question that can be derived from this:
assuming that I use observer to have an automatic failover, how should I configure my TNS? If the standby will become the primary automatically, I have to configure the clients to connect to the activated standby automatically. With no DNS changes or anything manual.
I guess in this case, my best option will be with LOAD_BALANCE=off, some of the clients will have RAC-NODE1 as first address and some will have RAC-NODE2, the standby will be the last address and we'll suffer the timeout if the primary will be down when connecting to the activated standby.
If anyone has other ideas, it would be great.
    Thanks,
    Liron

  • Infrastructure suggestion for Oracle RAC and Dataguard

    Hello,
We are working on migration business proposal and need to suggest HA and DR infrastructure solution with Oracle 11G databases. I am thinking to suggest Oracle 11g RAC and Dataguard to meet this requirement. We also wanted to cover Dev, Test and Pre Prod along with Prod in new environment. Can someone suggest cost effective, stable and scalable infrastructure for this requirement
    Best regards,
    Venkat

In terms of cost ? Perhaps.
    In terms of performance? NO.
Bear in mind I'm not trying to sell anything here, but in my experience hardly anything matches the performance of Exadata. It has specific features for the DB such as de iDB protocol which enables the offloading of queries to the exadata storage servers. More unique features include: storage indexes, HCC compression, smart flash cache... It's all a matter of how much you want to spend.
Yes, you can have all your servers on the same box if you want, just make sure it is not a single point of failure. (Have appropriate safeguards in place in case of power failure, Data center catastrophes, etc). In case of LPARs on the same box, be aware of one server over-utilizing resources which would affect the other LPARs (configurable).
    More info on Exadata: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/engineered-systems/exadata/dbmachine-x3-twp-1867467.pdf
If your company has a tight budget you might also look at your options with Database appliance: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/engineered-systems/database-appliance/documentation/oracle-db-appliance…
Database appliance has more flexibility in terms of licensing and it's also a complete hardware solution from oracle for Databases.

  • Oracle Spatial Datatypes and Dataguard 11g

    Hi
Does anyone know if the following datatypes are supported in dataguard 11g for logical standby or physical standby?
    SDO_Geometry
    SDO_georaster
    thanks
    sunir

A correction. Logical standby (SQL Apply) doesn't currently natively support spatial data types but sdo_geometry can be supported thru EDS by creating a logging table and two triggers and some manual work. Please check it out from My Oracle Support:
Note 559353.1 - Extended Datatype Support (EDS) for SQL Apply. "Extended Datatype Support (EDS) is the ability for SQL Apply to extend support for additional datatypes that are not natively supported yet by SQL Apply. EDS relies on a new capability in Oracle Database 10g Release 2 Patch Set 3 (10.2.0.4) and Oracle Database 11g Release 1 Patch Set 1 (11.1.0.7) that allows triggers to fire on the logical standby database. "

  • RMAN and Dataguard

We are trying to setup RMAN ( Incremental backup ) for a Dataguard system for Oracle 10G. As I am new to this can anyone help me to start the setup for this?

  • RMAN and dataguard wout catalog?

    Hello,
We used RMAN for backups and recently implemented a dataguard environment in 10g r2(physical standby). While perusing upgrading to 11g I came across instructions saying you must use a recovery catalog in a dataguard environment. The backups are running on the primary just using the control file and all seems to be working. I did a 'restore database validate' and it succeeded. Is the recovery catalog only necessary if I chose to do the backups on the standby - or is a catalog required in my scenario?
    Thanks,
    Mark

You were able to build your standby without using a catalog.
You are able to take backups of your primary without using a catalog.
Where does it say (in the documentation) that a recovery catalog is required ?
With the enforcement of DB_UNIQUE_NAME you can use the same catalog for Primary and Standby backups -- if you run backups from both locations. That is an enhancement. But not a requirement if you don't need to or plan to backup both sites and use a common catalog.

  • Creaton of Standby database and dataguard broker

    Hi Experts,
I am using Linux with Oracle version 11gR2. We have planned to create a physical standby database and also configure dataguard broker for the standby database.
Also, I've read the documents that active dataguard is a feature on 11g. Is it not possible on 10g ?
Can someone please provide me the steps to create the standby database and configure the dataguard broker.

    Hello;
A simple Data Broker setup would be :
On both Primary and Standby sites, change the initialization parameter in the spfile to enable the Data guard broker.
    SQL> Alter system set dg_broker_start=True scope=both;
On the PRIMARY site, open the ‘cmd’ and start Command Line Interface (CLI) of the Dataguard Broker (DGMGRL).
    /home/oracle:PRIMARY >dgmgrl
DGMGRL for Linux: Version 11.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production
    DGMGRL> connect sys/password@PRIMARY
    Create broker configuration.
    DGMGRL> create configuration ‘broker1’ as
    primary database is 'PRIMARY'
connect identifier is primary;Configuration "?broker1?" created with primary database "PRIMARY"
    DGMGRL>
(‘primary’ in Connect identifier is the service name through which the broker is connected to the PRIMARY database)
Add Standby Database to the above configuration.
    DGMGRL> add database 'standby' as
    connect identifier is 'STANDBY'
    maintained as physical;
    Database "standby" added
(‘to_standby’ in Connect identifier is the service name through which the broker is connected to the STANDBY database)
Now the configuration has been set up but it is still disabled. You can view the configuration by executing:
    DGMGRL> show configuration
The next step is to ENABLE the configuration ‘broker1’.
    DGMGRL> enable configuration;
    Enabled.
    Again view the configuration.
    DGMGRL> show configuration
    Configuration - ?broker1?
      Protection Mode: MaxPerformance
      Databases:
        PRIMARY - Primary database
        standby - Physical standby database
    Fast-Start Failover: DISABLED
    Configuration Status:
SUCCESSIn my humble opinion its a good idea to setup Data Guard without Broker and get the "feel" of it first.
Remember, once you setup Broker, you cannot use SQL to change your Data Guard setup.
    Best Regards

  • RAC,  ASM and Dataguard compatibility

We have a Dataguard setup with 3 node RAC. The primary is a 3 node RAC but the standby is a single instance. The ASM version is 10.1. Currently we have switchover the roles.
Can upgrade the ASM to 10.2 on standby then make it primary?
All I want to know is if we can have ASM 10.2 on primary and ASM 10.1 on physical standby?

The note for latest ASM [ 10.2  ] indicates a level of backward compatibility I believe
What version is the database ?

  • GoldenGate and DataGuard

    Hi,
How do I integrate GoldenGate with DataGuard when there is failover / switchover..?
What I mean is that it is not enough just to start the golden gate capture and datapump with the original parameters on the dr site...

    Have you looked at:
Implementing GoldenGate for DataGuard fail overs (Doc ID 1195995.1) ?

  • 11i and Dataguard

We have a customer who has a reporting database that currently is a clone of the production database, something that is done on a nightly basis.
They are looking at whether they could use Dataguard to create a reporting database which is more upto date.
Does any one have any experience of doing this? Does it work with 11i? What issues might they encounter?
Any help would be appreciated as we have been told by someone that it doesn't work although we do not know what they base their comments on.
    Thanks,
    Jeremy.

    Jeremy,
So which datatypes are not supported by logical standby database?Logical standby databases do not support the following data types:
    BFILE
Collections (including VARRAYS and nested tables)
    Encrypted columns
Multimedia data types (including Spatial, Image, and Context)
    ROWID, UROWID
    User-defined types
    XMLType
Data Type and DDL Support on a Logical Standby Database
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/data_support.htm
It may be that those datatypes are no involved with the areas that we are reporting so this might not be an issue. Any one able to identify the datatypes? Why would you go with unsupported solution? What would stop you from using physical standby database?
    Regards,
    Hussein
