"first play" plays wrong menu in XP

I've made a dvd in DVD-SP (4.2.1), assigned "first play" to the first menu.
All working fine on apples, set-tops, but not in windoze XP machines: they start in the wrong menu...
what can I do?

I've just installed boot camp on my macbook and that's how I tried it.
Close by I don't know any windows-users to check...
On my XP I tried it with VLC, what other apps should I try?
BTW; I've just edited another version of that project, and now it does play the right (different) menu.

  • First Play to Menu

I have i have an easy problem to fix... I inserted an asset to First Play when the dvd is put in, but after it plays it doesn't automatically go to the menu. Is there a way to make this happen?
    Thanks!

Nope. I tried that, even tried putting a chapter marker in the middle of the intro movie and sending it to another track, not a menu. It still just played the whole intro movie and then went to black. In the end, I went back to my master project (I was building a few different versions of a movie, one with an index menu and a choice to view next or return to main after each chapter, one that just plays straight through), did a save-as, and just redid the indexed project version exactly the same as I had already done.
For reasons I can't fathom, when I did the +exact same thing+ with this new version, it worked just fine...go figure. I had burned a test copy with the intro movie in a menu, not just a track, with some extra buttons and decided I didn't like it, so made modifications. I wonder if having the build folder already set up somehow interfered with having the new version of the first copy play properly after I had deleted the original first play and main menu and replaced it with a new first play and different menu that it would return to between chapters...

  • Menu problem, going to submenu in stead of first play

I've authored a DVD that has a main menu with five buttons for five submenus. Each submenu then has five buttons for the movies plus another button to return to the main menu. Everything works in the simulator, disc starts on first play main menu everything is selectable. Problem is on the burned DVD choosing main menu goes to one of the submenus although choosing main menu button does send you to the main menu. What'sd going on. I've used the same procedure to build a disc several times and no problem

A couple of questions: how long is the first play
video? Is the audio the same length? Does the first
menu have any video or audio? Also, it doesn't happen
in Simulator, but does it happen if you play the
VIDEO_TS folder on your hard disk with DVD Player?
Just trying to determine if your set-top box is the
cause, or whether maybe the audio is repeating
because it's not the same length as the video.
That was it. Audio was longer than video. Thanks!

  • First Play drop down menu not working

I have DVD Studio Pro 2. I created a DVD for my sister's school assignment and it worked fine then. Now I need to create a DVD for my client. The First Play selection menu goes blank when I click on it as well as the Title, Menu, and Return selections under Remote Control. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software to see if that would help and the results didn't change. Does anyone have any information on this? What do I need to do?

    Try deleting the cache.db file.
    Go to ~ / Library / Caches/com.apple.Safari
Move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash and restart your Mac.
~ (Tilde) represents your Home folder
Also, go to Safari / Preferences then select the AutoFill tab.
Click the Edit button next to:  Other forms
Delete the sites you have problems with autofill then click Done.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.

  • Motion menu first play not working

No matter what I do the first play motion menu either stops at the end or goes on to play a timeline on two different hardware players and in VLC (last two versions). The only player where it properly loops is PowerDVD 9 (which has its own problems with linked timelines). This is not a hardware problem. This is an Encore problem probably being caused by an inefficient layout of files on the disk.  There is a possibility (slight) that this is being caused by removing assets and "saving as" to create two DVD5's from a DVD9. Despite the deletion of assets the "saved as" project files are about the same size as the DVD9 project. I wish Encore ws like Pr in that it could rationalize a project by importing it into a new project. Then again with all the problems people report with motion menus it may not have anything to do with the work flow.
Don't see any easy work around here except building the two projects up from scratch unless someone has a idea of what to try.
I wish this software would work better. It really is the worst of the Production Suite (and I use Pr as my everyday editor)

Sometimes the end action will get locked into an asset if you build the project. Changing the end action of the menu after you have gone through the build process may not work. You might have to delete the menu from the project, re-import it, relink the assets and buttons, and it should work.
You are correct, Encore is not as polished of a program as Photoshop, but at least there are usually workarounds so you can successfully build a disc that works as it should.

  • First Play and not want menu button be functionally

I create warning video as first play. I don't want that menu, title buttons are working. I want to prevent people hit menu button while warning video. I could not figure out how to do that.

I have a question, why can I not set my dvd to first play the menu? I've done all the normal stuff, control click on the dvd under outline menu, control click in the graphical area and set first play. no matter what I do the disk always loads the video automatically, & actually the menu option is disabled?
Did you ever find an answer to why you can't sent your first menu to play? This is driving me mad too.
I think I found it. In the advanced tab of the menu inspector I unchecked the "display condition" box at the bottom. I am not exactly sure what it means as I have only had a couple of hours of playing with this app. I think it was looking for an alternative target which wasn't set.

  • First Play Menu doesn't work properly on DVD Recorders

I am an experienced PC Encore user. Just finished authoring a DVD with Encore CS3. Test results on Toshiba and Liteon DVD recorders yield a failed first play response (no menu appears). Test results on Sony set top players and computer DVD players, first play responds correctly (menu appears instantly).
I have created and tested DVDs on the same DVD recorders with earlier versions of encore and never had failed first play results.
Further, if I press the DVD Menu on the remote, the menu appears.
I discovered a work-around. I duplicated the DVD in a duplicator, tested the duplicate in the recorders and it worked properly. It must have stripped the header information from the master.
This is a problem with Encore CS3 and needs to be addressed. Many people use their DVD recorder as players, which is one of the reasons we use recorders to test.
    Response . . .

AS opposed to lyonseye I am a plain novice on Encore - always dependent on templates. Now , I've just recently finished my first proper encore-project. Simple enough - one single menu linking to three timelines and wow my own pictures as static background! Checked and built (+R single layer) without any hickups in the error-report-department.
The disk plays perfect in various set top dvd's
but not on my own recorder(s)!!! ( 3 different machines tested with various players).
I won't go into machinery details (harm :-)) but would be happy if someone could explain to me if this is a common problem or eventually could point to the most usual reason for this unexpected behaviour.
Another question: the manual states that it is possible to apply motion background to the entire menu. I've tried this , linking video to buttons are easy enough as is linking sound to the menu. But pickwhipping ( did I spell that correct ,wonder) video to the background is a different animal.Short takes of approx 1 min duration was ment looping until buttons beeing pressed. Not working for me , maybe others could tell me the secret?
    Again :

  • First Play activates button instead of menu

Good afternoon, in DVDSP2, I have a menu that has a looped video as background with two buttons on top created by default shapes. Button one links to a Play All script and the second to a chapter menu.
What happens in simulator is that the menu with the video flashes by for a second then imediatly plays the link of button 1, but still playing the audio of the looped video of first menu. The same occures with button2-content if I make that one as button 1. In Connections it only says Menu1 on First play, not button 1 or anything. Have I missed something or doesn't this just sound as a bugg? Thanks for answering, regards Erik

Stan I don't see any overrides in the project.
The following should outline the problem more specifically
When the disk is inserted into the DVD player initially and the door closes, the disk plays the Main Menu first properly and life is good.
During the Main Menu if I hit Stop it will change to the blue screen of the DVD player.
When I hit play from this blue screen the movie starts instead of resuming the Main Menu.

  • Transition from first play movie to menu

    Hi all,
I have a short video track (8 seconds) which I have set to First Play. When the DVD is inserted the video plays.
Now I want to use a custom transition to go from the end of this video track to my Main menu.
When I select the track I can set a custom transition in the Inspector. However, the transition does not play. Not in the Simulator, nor in the test compile I have made. The video plays, and at the end it just cuts to the menu. Am I missing something here ?

    Rommy
Transitions don't work with tracks, but you can use some workarounds to get the effect.
One option is creating the trasition inside the first play video itself: take your menu design and use it in the video creating the trasition in the video application you have (FCP. Motion) and give the final video background still a duration of i.e. 30 seconds.
The use this animation as video background in your menu and set the Loop Point to the time where the menu must start: lets say 8 secs (your animation) + X secs (your transition).
The menu will loop over the video still and you'll get your effect. You can use a simple script to jump to menu loop point (look for it in the user manual) or you can build a second copy of your menu without any intro animation, and use it for the jumps back from your tracks.
Hope you get the idea !

  • DVD Studio Pro: DVD not opening to First Play menu

DVD Studio Pro: My DVD plays video instead of opening to a menu even though I have "Menu 1" in my First Play field

Are you sure? Does the menu have the First Play symbol in the top left corner?

  • Updating Menu yet Button won't assign to First Play

I created a file with a custom .mov menu, new button, and added
    the assets in the timeline.
I find that I have to tweak the .mov menu, so after tweakage in AE,
I delete the old menu and bring in the new menu. Doh!
Now when I drop a button onto the menu and assign to "First Play",
DVDSPro simulator doesn't see it and keeps prompting that the button hasn't been assigned to "First Play".
Is there a work-a-round so I can avoid creating a whole new file,
dropping all the files into the timeline and naming chapters again?????

I have a question regarding joining tracks when recroding, I listen to a lot of classical so naturally when it come to recarding a symphony, for example, from a CD I can join tracks to create one file. However, I noticed that if I purchase classical music from itunes, there doesn't seem to be a way to join tracks (or is there?). Another question I have is this: is there a way to join tracks once you have music already in your library?
    Any response would be welcomed.
    Thanks.

  • First Play issues

I am authoring an SD NTSC DVD and have set the copyright warning track as first play but when I make an .img and test the build in DVD Player it just plays my Menu first and skips the First Play track. Have restarted and done all the usual stuff so if anyone has any clues that would be really helpful. Thanks

Thanks - it's actually a moving image track and it does have the right end jump. I think I might have found where I was going wrong (finger error as so often the case!) but thanks anyway.

  • First play plays audio again

In DVDSP2 I have a logo with music audio bed as first play. They play fine, but then when the player continues to the first menu, two seconds of audio from the beginning of the first play plays again. No video just the first few bars of the music. This doesn't happen in simulation mode, but it happens every time on the disk on a variety of players. What is wrong?

A couple of questions: how long is the first play
video? Is the audio the same length? Does the first
menu have any video or audio? Also, it doesn't happen
in Simulator, but does it happen if you play the
VIDEO_TS folder on your hard disk with DVD Player?

  • First play video not playing

I have a 6 second video set as my first play with the end jumping to my main menu, but when I put the DVD into a regular DVD player, I get the DVD player's spalsh screen not te first play video or even my menu. When I push menu on my remote it jumps to te main menu, but the first play video still will not play. What I am doing wrong, and what can I do to fix it?

    Hi:
Not sure what is happening but try this workaround.
    - Create a black image file (i.e. in Photoshop) with the size of your video format.
    - Create a Slideshow, import this black image and add to the slideshow. Set 1 sec as playback time for the slide.
    - Set that slide as First Play and its End Jump to your Intro Track.
If that way works please don't ask my why !!!

  • First Play "Not Permitted" on Apple DVD player

I have some duplicated DVD-Rs of a project, and the client ha reported a disutrbing error. I've been told that on several different Macs running OS 10.2 - 10.4, not only does the disc not auto launch DVD player and not auto-play the first play menu, but when the user presses play on the floating control, they get a "Not Permitted" message. The user reported that they were able to choose "open Video_TS" and navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder on the disc, at which point they were able to get the disc to play.
The disc include a significant amount of content on the ROM sector of the disc, including an autorun and an .exe file for windows users. However, I can't see how the presence of these ROM files could interfere with the operation of DVD Player and the VIDEO_TS folder on the disc.
Furthermore, the duplication master for this disc has been formatted directly from DVD studio as a standrd DVD volume - no Toast burn, hybrid volume formatting, anything like that.
Upon inspection I discovered that my authoring assistant had specified a pre-script on the first play menu. I try never to use pre-scripts for anything, as I have found the way DVD studio handles them to be unreliable. However, I suspect this pre-script on the first play menu as the culprit in this problematic behavior, and have removed it.
The problem consists in that I did not experience this problem with any of the DVD-R checkdiscs I burned from DVD studio, unti the discs were duplicated. We'll be doing a full-scale replication run as the next step. Since I am not able to reproduce this problem on discs I burn here, I'd like find a way to know I have fixed the problem.
My question is, has anyone else ever encountered issues with their first-play menu throwing up this "not permitted" condition in Apple DVD Player? Has anyone ever found a connection between this issue and pre-scripts, or between this issue and any ROM files?
I suspect that DVD studio's pre-scripts are "simulated" or translated through the abstratction layer of DVD studio in a way that allows them to be outside the DVD spec, or perhaps there are other ways DVD studio might be using the pre-command on a menu, such as when you specify a button selection for a menu, that use the menu pre-command, and override the pre-script you might have spcified for the menu.

I've seen it on replicated masters when a dvd-r master was used and not all regions were selected as ok to play. DSP doesn't 'check' region 7 by default... its best to use a region all project and .img files, not VIDEO_TS builds to the HD.
How were the discs duplicated though? That is probably the cause of the problem, not the pre-Script. Maybe a 'Data' disc was burnt and not a DVD-Video type option...
