First play target in DVDSP

Hi there,
I was about to preview with "simulate" of DVDSP the content of a DVD that I am preparing with that same application.
I get the following message:
The "first play" target has not been set
The simulator will start in a stopped state
My choice is to click "OK" and have the simulator quits, or to click "cancel"
Could someone please explain what I should do or what I did wrong ?
I haven't found an answer in the DVDSP help
Thanks in advance
Ivan

Hi Gary
When I do so - right click on the tracks in viewer, it is indeed starting the simulator, but if later on, I try again, directly from the Simulate tab, it is not reading and I get the same error message again....
Is it because I did something wrong when I created the DVD project ?
Many thanks
Ivan

  • How do I set the "First Play" Target?

I'm very new to DVD Studio Pro and after building a menu and adding a track when I simulate it I get the warning, +"The 'First Play' target has not been set. The simulator will start in a stopped state."+
When I burned the disc it just started the video without any menu.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Go to the "Graphical window" Click over the icon which you want to be "First Play" pushing "Ctrl" in your keyboard, you will get a list of options, there you have the answer.

  • Help! First Play Woes DVDSP4 confused non-newbie

I thank you if you are able to shed some light on this.
We have made many discs with a first play track, logos, legal etc. All work fine but our most recent project is not, for no reason we can see.
We have a 30sec video as the first play, before going to main menu, works fine on very first play but pressing stop twice on a DVD remote, then play again does not return to the first play but plays another track completely (the longest on the disc, if that is any clue) Ejecting the disc and re-playing works as it should. We have tried on many set tops with the same result, however on a Mac or PC with playback software it seems fine.
Here's what we have tried with no change in result, each new attempt had a completely fresh build and image:
    - Disabled user control on first play track (this was the only difference between this and other discs we have made that work)
    - Deleted offending (longest) track, removed assets from project, re-imported m2v and aif, made new track and connections
    - Changed track order in project outline (a long shot!)
    - Set global return to the first play track (and set individual returns)
    - Imported 2sec black, set this as first play, then end jump to original intro
    - Added 5x 2sec tracks cascading from start to intro in an attempt to displace the file location of the offending track and try to create same issue but with a different track appearing, still got the same (longest) track
    - Deleted offending track, removed all traces from project, deleted assets from Finder and re-encoded fresh from FCP timeline
    - Changed asset file names as 3 track assets including the first play and offending track shared 1st 5 characters the same, relinked assets
    - Swapped menu button track targets again to displace offending track's position in the image, no change
Can anyone suggest what else we might try? What is making the DVD players think this is a special track and ignore the first play command?
Is it anything to do with the last ProApp or MacOS update?

Stop Stop will play Title 1 on the disc. Thats all there is to it.
In the Outline tab you need to be in the By VTS view (if you are using dvdsp 4) and not By Type. Click the little <-> (icon) in the top right of the Tab to toggle between views or drag the right side of the Tab to reveal both at the same time.
Whatever you want to play after the Stop Stop should be the Track in VTS 1. So this could be the Warning, a black bit of vid that jumps to a script, its upto you! The normal thing to do is to have Title 1 as the main show but its upto you as i said.
FWIW, often authors will disable all UOPs, even Stop, on the warnings & logos so users cant quickly press Stop Stop to skip all that stuff and begin watching the movie,

  • First Play and not want menu button be functionally

I create warning video as first play. I don't want that menu, title buttons are working. I want to prevent people hit menu button while warning video. I could not figure out how to do that.

I have a question, why can I not set my dvd to first play the menu? I've done all the normal stuff, control click on the dvd under outline menu, control click in the graphical area and set first play. no matter what I do the disk always loads the video automatically, & actually the menu option is disabled?
Did you ever find an answer to why you can't sent your first menu to play? This is driving me mad too.
I think I found it. In the advanced tab of the menu inspector I unchecked the "display condition" box at the bottom. I am not exactly sure what it means as I have only had a couple of hours of playing with this app. I think it was looking for an alternative target which wasn't set.

  • CS5 Encore first play broken

I have a Encore project that has a timeline (quicktime video) set up as first play. It previews properly, but when I burn the disk, the produced DVD starts at the menu after the timeline when I play the disk through WMP or VLC. I don't have immediate access to a hardware DVD player to test this with, and since my target audience will likely be playing the produced DVD's from WMP or VLC it would be agreeable if the DVD's worked as advertised. Version 5.0.0.508
    Three coasters and counting.

You have the end action of the main menu set to itself. Some users had problems similar to yours with this configuration, that ppeared to be resolved when the end action was changed to "stop."
    Why all the overrides?
I thought there was a point to the introductory timeline, but its end action is to go to the man menu either way.
I would first change the menu end action, and see what I have. Then I'd remove all the overrides and see.

  • First Play "Not Permitted" on Apple DVD player

I have some duplicated DVD-Rs of a project, and the client ha reported a disutrbing error. I've been told that on several different Macs running OS 10.2 - 10.4, not only does the disc not auto launch DVD player and not auto-play the first play menu, but when the user presses play on the floating control, they get a "Not Permitted" message. The user reported that they were able to choose "open Video_TS" and navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder on the disc, at which point they were able to get the disc to play.
The disc include a significant amount of content on the ROM sector of the disc, including an autorun and an .exe file for windows users. However, I can't see how the presence of these ROM files could interfere with the operation of DVD Player and the VIDEO_TS folder on the disc.
Furthermore, the duplication master for this disc has been formatted directly from DVD studio as a standrd DVD volume - no Toast burn, hybrid volume formatting, anything like that.
Upon inspection I discovered that my authoring assistant had specified a pre-script on the first play menu. I try never to use pre-scripts for anything, as I have found the way DVD studio handles them to be unreliable. However, I suspect this pre-script on the first play menu as the culprit in this problematic behavior, and have removed it.
The problem consists in that I did not experience this problem with any of the DVD-R checkdiscs I burned from DVD studio, unti the discs were duplicated. We'll be doing a full-scale replication run as the next step. Since I am not able to reproduce this problem on discs I burn here, I'd like find a way to know I have fixed the problem.
My question is, has anyone else ever encountered issues with their first-play menu throwing up this "not permitted" condition in Apple DVD Player? Has anyone ever found a connection between this issue and pre-scripts, or between this issue and any ROM files?
I suspect that DVD studio's pre-scripts are "simulated" or translated through the abstratction layer of DVD studio in a way that allows them to be outside the DVD spec, or perhaps there are other ways DVD studio might be using the pre-command on a menu, such as when you specify a button selection for a menu, that use the menu pre-command, and override the pre-script you might have spcified for the menu.

I've seen it on replicated masters when a dvd-r master was used and not all regions were selected as ok to play. DSP doesn't 'check' region 7 by default... its best to use a region all project and .img files, not VIDEO_TS builds to the HD.
How were the discs duplicated though? That is probably the cause of the problem, not the pre-Script. Maybe a 'Data' disc was burnt and not a DVD-Video type option...

  • Menu problem, going to submenu in stead of first play

I've authored a DVD that has a main menu with five buttons for five submenus. Each submenu then has five buttons for the movies plus another button to return to the main menu. Everything works in the simulator, disc starts on first play main menu everything is selectable. Problem is on the burned DVD choosing main menu goes to one of the submenus although choosing main menu button does send you to the main menu. What'sd going on. I've used the same procedure to build a disc several times and no problem

A couple of questions: how long is the first play
video? Is the audio the same length? Does the first
menu have any video or audio? Also, it doesn't happen
in Simulator, but does it happen if you play the
VIDEO_TS folder on your hard disk with DVD Player?
Just trying to determine if your set-top box is the
cause, or whether maybe the audio is repeating
because it's not the same length as the video.
That was it. Audio was longer than video. Thanks!

  • First Play Menu doesn't work properly on DVD Recorders

I am an experienced PC Encore user. Just finished authoring a DVD with Encore CS3. Test results on Toshiba and Liteon DVD recorders yield a failed first play response (no menu appears). Test results on Sony set top players and computer DVD players, first play responds correctly (menu appears instantly).
I have created and tested DVDs on the same DVD recorders with earlier versions of encore and never had failed first play results.
Further, if I press the DVD Menu on the remote, the menu appears.
I discovered a work-around. I duplicated the DVD in a duplicator, tested the duplicate in the recorders and it worked properly. It must have stripped the header information from the master.
This is a problem with Encore CS3 and needs to be addressed. Many people use their DVD recorder as players, which is one of the reasons we use recorders to test.
    Response . . .

AS opposed to lyonseye I am a plain novice on Encore - always dependent on templates. Now , I've just recently finished my first proper encore-project. Simple enough - one single menu linking to three timelines and wow my own pictures as static background! Checked and built (+R single layer) without any hickups in the error-report-department.
The disk plays perfect in various set top dvd's
but not on my own recorder(s)!!! ( 3 different machines tested with various players).
I won't go into machinery details (harm :-)) but would be happy if someone could explain to me if this is a common problem or eventually could point to the most usual reason for this unexpected behaviour.
Another question: the manual states that it is possible to apply motion background to the entire menu. I've tried this , linking video to buttons are easy enough as is linking sound to the menu. But pickwhipping ( did I spell that correct ,wonder) video to the background is a different animal.Short takes of approx 1 min duration was ment looping until buttons beeing pressed. Not working for me , maybe others could tell me the secret?

  • First Play doesn't work!

I'm trying to listen to an upcoming album that's supposedly available for free streaming via First Play: https://itunes.apple.com/us/station/first-play-judas-priest-redeemer/idra.887546 522
However, when I click on it, the only things that happens is that my iTunes is brought to the front. I've search on the iTune Store, and found the link. When I click on the link, it opens that same page in Safari. What gives???

I think you recorded a presentation by accident. Go File/Clear Recording and see if that helps

  • First Play drop down menu not working

I have DVD Studio Pro 2. I created a DVD for my sister's school assignment and it worked fine then. Now I need to create a DVD for my client. The First Play selection menu goes blank when I click on it as well as the Title, Menu, and Return selections under Remote Control. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software to see if that would help and the results didn't change. Does anyone have any information on this? What do I need to do?

    Try deleting the cache.db file.
    Go to ~ / Library / Caches/com.apple.Safari
Move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash and restart your Mac.
~ (Tilde) represents your Home folder
Also, go to Safari / Preferences then select the AutoFill tab.
Click the Edit button next to:  Other forms
Delete the sites you have problems with autofill then click Done.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.

  • Forgot to change first play to track now DVD is just grey screen

I burned a DVD and forgot to set the first play to the track. Instead it kept the first play on the default which is the menu. There is a VIDEO TS and an AUDIO TS file burned on the DVD but I only see grey screen. Is there any way to view the DVD?

Some players may let you get to the content by selecting a particular VOB, others won't. Your best bet is to re-author the disc and set the first play item.
However, you can do this with software such as DVDAfterEdit - it's a relatively simple process to set it, however you'll then need to re-burn the disc. There's no way to change the disc you ahve already burned - it'll have to be done again in one of the two ways I suggest above.

  • DVDSP3 - First play problem

    Hi
I producing a project on DVD SP3. I've done this before but I'm having problems with this particular project. It is a simple project with 1 menu page and a start button. From there you can navigate thru chapters. I have "first play" set to Menu 1 and everything works fine on the simulator but when I burn a disk and try to play the DVD on a player, Menu 1 does not appear on the startup. If I hit "enter" on the DVD player's remote the "Start DVD" button visibly blinks as activated and the DVD video plays and navigates thru the chapters fine.
So.....Everything works but Menu 1 is not visible on startup.
I'm starting to pull my hair out....LOL
Something weird I've noticed is that when I burn the large project it the prompt says it is "compiling". When I burn this small project the prompt says it is muxing.
I just finished a project with 10 menus and 77 buttons. It works like a charm. Am I just overlooking some obscure mistake or is there something obvious mistake I've committed?
    Toby Threadgill

    Hello,
Thanks for your ideas. I have tried both your suggestions unfortunately to no avail. When I use the simulator, everything works like a champ. When I emulate using the DVD player or burn an actual DVD the menu does not show up and the screen is black. If I hit the enter on the player, the button visibly blinks on the black screen and the video track starts playing and navigates fine.

  • Problem with 'first play'

My first play is set to the main menu. For some reason if I don't go back to main menu before ejecting, then when I put it back in it starts where I stopped rather than main menu. This only happens on computer, not in DVD player. Any ideas. I'm using version 4.2.

How a previously viewed DVD behaves can be specified in the Apple DVDPlayer app's preferences.
From the menu bar: DVDPlayer > Preferences. Click on "Previously Viewed" at the top right of the preferences window. The various options are self-explanatory.

  • First Play activates button instead of menu

Good afternoon, in DVDSP2, I have a menu that has a looped video as background with two buttons on top created by default shapes. Button one links to a Play All script and the second to a chapter menu.
What happens in simulator is that the menu with the video flashes by for a second then imediatly plays the link of button 1, but still playing the audio of the looped video of first menu. The same occures with button2-content if I make that one as button 1. In Connections it only says Menu1 on First play, not button 1 or anything. Have I missed something or doesn't this just sound as a bugg? Thanks for answering, regards Erik

Stan I don't see any overrides in the project.
The following should outline the problem more specifically
When the disk is inserted into the DVD player initially and the door closes, the disk plays the Main Menu first properly and life is good.
During the Main Menu if I hit Stop it will change to the blue screen of the DVD player.
When I hit play from this blue screen the movie starts instead of resuming the Main Menu.

  • First Play to Menu

I have i have an easy problem to fix... I inserted an asset to First Play when the dvd is put in, but after it plays it doesn't automatically go to the menu. Is there a way to make this happen?
    Thanks!

Nope. I tried that, even tried putting a chapter marker in the middle of the intro movie and sending it to another track, not a menu. It still just played the whole intro movie and then went to black. In the end, I went back to my master project (I was building a few different versions of a movie, one with an index menu and a choice to view next or return to main after each chapter, one that just plays straight through), did a save-as, and just redid the indexed project version exactly the same as I had already done.
For reasons I can't fathom, when I did the +exact same thing+ with this new version, it worked just fine...go figure. I had burned a test copy with the intro movie in a menu, not just a track, with some extra buttons and decided I didn't like it, so made modifications. I wonder if having the build folder already set up somehow interfered with having the new version of the first copy play properly after I had deleted the original first play and main menu and replaced it with a new first play and different menu that it would return to between chapters...
