First Post | Personal Finance

Hi,
I could not find a good place to post so apologies if this is the wrong location.
I was wanting to know if anyone has any advice for a personal finance package that would work well with UK banks. The software MSFT Money would connect to the bank and download all you information. Is there such a package available. I do have VMware but would rather have a native software package to mac.
Any advice, links or tip are very much appreciated.
Kind Regards,

I use Quicken also, but another thread I read said Quicken is not available in the UK. I don’t know why. Perhaps it is only for U.S. dollars or the software doesn’t work with UK banks for some reason.
Anyway, look at this site for a review of personal finance software and if any of the recommended ones are available in the UK.
http://personal-finance-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
Near the bottom it has only two applications, other than Quicken, that are compatible with the Mac: Moneydance and iCash.
Otherwise, crank up the VMware.

  • Please make this a good experiance for my first post on any board.  READ ME

Hi all. Well first off, let me start by saying that my whole life I've owned PC's. And I'm not hacker Elliet. But I've gotten to know them pretty well. All the way from Windows 3.1 that came out a long time ago (more than 10 years ago)
So after a while of hearing about MAC's I decided to start small and get an iPod (since they are so popular here in NYC) and see what apple was about. Well I really saw that Apple had a great product and started asking about their computers. And did plenty of research. And before the new Intel Macs came out, I was going to get a powerbook. But I had a feeling a new laptop was coming out and waited a lil while and sure enough. The Macbook Pro came out. So I went out and did all my research (as to this being the first real purchase of a Apple product and knew about the possible implications of a new first gen Intel chip in a apple product litterally making history) I knew I might become a new beta tester.
So I started looking on these boards and did 2 weeks worth of hard research to see if the Mac Book Pro (MBP) was for me. And after all the problems i saw (ex: The whine, Right speaker distortion, heat coming from it, white line at bottom of screen, etc) I never saw or read anything about AOL connectivity problems. And I know, I know... alot of you are probably going to gripe and complain about AOL sucking and yada yada yada, but please. Cut me some slack. I actually like AOL. I got on it back in 92 when it came out, and really enjoyed it. And have been on it since. I like chatting on there, and so forth. And I hope you help with my problem instead of telling me to go get "a real ISP" I do have a real ISP, but I like my AOL too.
    So now to my problem....
I have a Sony Viao 1.8ghz PC with 512 ram, 80 gig hard drive, 10/100 ethernet port. Connected to a Belkin Router (more info below on specs of router) connected to Opt Online Broadband Cable internet with VoIP. I use my macbook pro on the wireless network at my home.
I got a mac book pro 1.83 ghz running 512 ram on Tiger OSX 10.4.6 I thought that I would wait till a connectivity patch (which I thought would have been 10.4.6) fix the airport problems came out till I posted something. But now that I've tried everything, I'm hoping you open this thread and help me and possibly someone else out there as well. I just d/l'd and installed the 10.4.6 update last night and it did'nt help. So here's more info on my specs. I have a belkin router wireless G 2.4 ghz 54mbs router and I have configured the router with it's firewall, wap2 encryption (as it's the only selection the router has that is available that matches what airport comes with in encryption) I hid my network, and have tried to upgrade the firmware on the router.
Now Here's the real problem. I can connect to AOL on my MBP when I connect the actual ethernet cable to the MBP's Ethernet port (after I have let the cable modem do a hard reset to configure itself to a mac) I can connect to AOL. But when I disconnect the cable and return it to it's normal config, I can't connect to AOL. I can connect to the internet via safari, and firefox, and even AOL's IM on iChat. I can use Itunes all kinds of things. I can even play warcraft 3 wirelessly on battlenet. But connecting to AOL is a pain in the @$$. It's the only proggy I have that won't allow it to connect. I keep getting the error message "Your AOL connection ended because the AOL host was unable to start a new session. Please try to sign on again." Of course All i see for a while is the spinning black and white circle. And it goes through step 1 and 2, goes straight to 6. Then it goes blank, and BAM! That message pops up. And what's so frustrating is that I've tried every possible configuration on AOL, my router and even system preferences, for it to let connect. I even went into system preferences on the mac and went down the the Internet & Network "Sharing" icon and tried 100 possible combinations on that in the services tab, and firewall tab. I've turned them on, off, tried to make exceptions ETC. And no matter how much I play with the personal file sharing and windows sharing advanced settings and sigh every possible combination to make AOL connect via wirelessly. And nothing. I then even tried to fix the connection under AOL in setup. I've gone through and selected TCP Script, Airport Script. Cable Script, And practically every script I can think of. And nothing. I even went on to AOL and downloaded thier alleged fix to wireless accessing AOL. And nothing. I've been searching all over google, AOL's website, and all over these discussion boards and no mention of anyone even having the same problem. But please, someone out there with their infinit knowledge of how Macs run and having more experience than me, Please make this a good experiance for my first post on any board anywhere reguarding a mac. A MBP at that too.
An update to this, But amazingly enough, I actually got it to connect to AOL wirelessly for the first time yest. But I have no Idea how i did it. I tried for 3 hours to reproduce it and no luck. I was accessing my router at it's website config screen and somehow I clicked on connect to AOL and while it was trying to connect to it, i reset the router and BAM, it connected to AOL. And I was in shock. I thought I solved it. Somewhere while it was reseting the router it connected and stayed connected to AOL till I signed off and tried to sign back on to see if I could now connect, and guess what. The same dumb message keeps popping up "Your AOL connection ended because the AOL host was unable to start a new session. Please try to sign on again." And all I did was sign off to test it, thinking I had fixed the problem. I tried for 3 hours like I stated above, and BAM got it connected to AOL wirelessly again (somehow while the router was resetting). And thinking I fixed it, or figured out the trick to getting it to work, signed off... I kissed aol goodbye again. And have been unable to reproduce the "glitch". SIGH Can someone out there please help me?
I think I've made this message as detailed as possible, but please, can someone give me some constructive criticism on how to fix my AOL wireless connectivity problems. Do you know if it's my router? My MBP? AOL software? BTW, I got AOL software version 10.3.7 (Rev 4136.310 US) The latest version I D/L'ed from the AOL website. Anyone know If I should turn on or off some things such as personal fire sharing on, or firewall off or on? ANYTHING. Please. I've put alot of time into writing this post and making it as detailed as possible. And been having this problem for the past 3 weeks that I've had my MBP, and have waited long enough to use my AOL. If you need any further information or suggestions on making AOL work, please let me know. Thank you for taking the time to read all of this, and I really appreciate all of you in the time you take in responding back in trying to help me. I'll be monitoring this post almost hourly. So I hope someone out there can help. Thanks so much again. And help me make this transition to Mac a pleasant one knowing that there is a mac community out there willing to help a new mac client. Again, Many thanks
    In Heath and Wealth,

    I FIXED IT!
FYI for the rest of you that might be having the same problem. DON'T USE A BELKIN ROUTER WITH AOL ON A MBP!!!!! It ***** wirelessly. or even hard connected, it won't connect. I went to best buy today, and got a refund on the belkin. I then went to J&R and got a D-Link router. And now it works perfect. I can now chat on AOL yet again, and I tried all the other web browsers I have and messengers, and warcraft 3 online via battlenet. And it works great. I want to give you guys a special thanks for taking time out to answer back to my post. FYI! Belkin wireless G routers do not connect you to AOL wirelessly on MBP's. No matter how much you mess around on them. I highly recommend a D-Link Router. They are easy to set up as long as you READ ( AND I MEAN IT!!!) read the instructions before you set anything up on it. Use the CD that it comes with, and you'll be good to go. Set it up and it works great Almost no dead zones in the house, and now I can use the MBP with all it's cababilities. Thanks people. I really appreciate it.
P.S. I called belkin last night when i decided to get a refund on my router for today and when i talked to the tech, after puersuading him to tell me the truth. And stop BS'ing me, he broke down and admited that AOL does not work wirelessly on MBP's. So to make a long story short this time, There you go. And one last note, I'm very happy now with my d-link router. I honestly thought it would suck. Not being a brand name router or anything. But amazingly, it works like a brand name item! Again, many thanks all.

  • How do I use Numbers to develop personal finance and budget spreadsheets?

I recently purchased an IMac and would appreciate advice on how best to use IWork (Numbers) to set up a personal budget and finance spreadsheet program. Please bear in mind that I am not a computer expert and only have average understanding of spreadsheets.
By way of background, I have poor eyesight and use a screen resolution of 1344 x 840.
I currently use Quicken for Mac 2007 for my personal finance and budget. The problem is that fonts are far too small for me to see clearly and cannot be changed.
Hence my interest in using IWork (Numbers).
My budget and finance requirements are reasonably straightforward
    1. create income and expenditure categories and sub-categories
    2. Create 3 accounts (cheque, savings, credit) in which I can manually record debit and credit transactions by description, category and sub-category
    3. Create annual budgets with specified monthly amounts for categories and sub-categories
    4. Compare actual income and expenditure for categories and sub-categories (for all accounts) against budget each month and for year to date.
I am confident most of my requirements can be met by using the Checking Register and Budget Templates in IWork (Numbers).
However, I don’t know how to link and further develop these two Templates to enable me to use the same categories and sub-categories for all accounts and budget.
I also want to be able to compare actual income and expenditure for categories and sub-categories (for all accounts) against budget each month and for year to date (ie. point 4 above).
I should be grateful if someone with a better knowledge than I have of IWork (Numbers) and spreadsheets could steer me in the right direction.
    With thanks in anticipation.

    ww,
You can begin your orientation by reading the Numbers 09 User Guide, available for download free of charge from the Numbers Help menu. This will give you a lot of insight into how spreadsheets can be used and how to build them.
Then download the, also free, iWork Formulas and Functions User Guide and page through it to see what's there. It would be about as interesting as reading a dictionary to read it straight through, but it's good to get to know what functions are available.
I find that using the iMac's full resolution and wearing strong reading glasses is better than using reduced resolution. If that's not enough, you can go to System Preferences, Universal Access, Zoom. There are different zoom behaviors that you can choose from depending on your personal preference. Some users here have expressed a dislike for the zoom feature, but I suspect that if they needed it really badly, they would come to appreciate it.
Regarding the finance spreadsheet development, it's a big job. You are off on the right foot because you already have formulated a clear picture of what you want the final result to look like, or perhaps nearly so. My first tip is to take advantage of the Numbers ability to use many separate tables per sheet. Then it is easy to rearrange your sections if you don't like the look of your first efforts.
Make a dummy layout, with notes and/or fictitious values in cells where you eventually want links or complicated formulas. I suggest that you not consider using the Categories feature of Numbers Tables. The feature is limiting and at some point will stop you dead in your tracks and you will have to go back and start over with that particular element of your design.
Then, seek help here on one technical hurdle at a time. You can study the way the Check Register and Budget templates work by clicking on the interesting cells and looking at the expressions that appear in the formula bar.
    Good luck,
    Jerry

  • Is there a good apple based alternative to the personal. finance software program "quicken for mac"?  It is a poorly supported program.

Is there a good apple based alternative to the persona finance software program "quicken for mac"?  It is a poorly supported program.

I switched from Quicken on a Windows computer to iBank on a Mac. It is a very good program, has very good free download connections to financial institutions (optional), and very good reports. The only negative is that it is just different enough from Quicken that there is a learning curve and the first month or two were frustrating -- but that is likely true of anything that you might change to. http://www.iggsoftware.com/ibank/

  • Customizing a pie chart for a personal finance sheet?

    Hi,
I am creating a personal finance sheet, and I'd like to get a visual sense of where my money is going. I've put all my expenses in a table and added a column to indicate the sort of expenditure. Food, Clothes, CD's, etc.
I'd like to use a pie chart to show which percentage of my money is going to each. Ideally I could link a category from a popup-menu to a section of the pie, but I cannot find a way to manipulate the selection of the sections of pie. Does anyone know of a way to accomplish this either dynamically or manually?
One way I can think of would be to sum the sorts of expenditures in another table and using that to make the chart, but I don't know how this is possible.
    Thank you

I named the first table "Main"
    In the second table
column A contains the names of different kinds of expenses
    column B contains:
    =SUMIF(Main :: B,A,Main :: C)
    column C contains:
    =A
    column D contains:
    =B/(SUM(B))
Given that we may chart the range C2…D4

  • Uh Oh, Students Grade Themselves a "C" - or Worse - On Personal Finance

As I have a child going off pretty soon to college, I was laughing at the truth of a brief article posted regarding how kids these days have not really prepared regarding personal finance and have a few misconceptions.  Stats in the article are rather interesting.   http://www.moneysedge.com/newsimage?id=133 I truly wonder at times if some of these kids are going to be able to balance their own checkbook when they are on their own.  When I was in university about 20 years ago, having to take an economics class that included the fundamentals of personal finance were mandatory.  Not sure if it still is nowadays. Anyway, figured as I just joined the group I should share.  I was hoping that my concern of this was not in the minority.

Funny article!  I graduated univeristy in 2007 and economics was not required at my school although my high school did require a half year economics class to all seniors. That half year class was more useful than 98% of any other class I've ever taken (including my uni courses). We actually had to make a budget, find a pretend job and figure out our paycheck, find an apartment, etc. in a report as a project. It really taught me a lot about being on my own and budgeting money.  I will admit I still don't know much about 401(k)s/retirement investments and I am 30 now. I knew almost 0 about credit until I started reading myFico after getting a car loan. I think a class should be required in high school and/or university about finances.

  • Looking for a Personal Finance, Money Management program that works smoothly with Mac OS 10.9.4

I’m looking for something to break down my spending into categories and merchants so I can track where I’m spending and better control it.   Checked out Quicken first, but looks like Intuit is giving up on Mac integration.  Can someone experienced in Mac and Financial Programs recommend one for personal finance and money management that works well with Mac?  OSX 10.9.4.  And, I’m an English major.  Numbers and spending are my Achilles wallet.

I like Quicken personally. There is a new version in the works.

  • Anyone using kmymoney personal finance management system?

anyone using kmymoney personal finance management system on a mini?

The ability to retrieve a set of distinct values (across all nodes) for a given Property Definition is not a built-in capability.
However, you can add this capability, like this:
    - find an external storage location for storing this data (basically a 1:m relationship from String propDef to propDefValue) -- see below for some ideas.
    First, process existing nodes:
    - for each property definition on the specified type:
    - retrieve all nodes of that type (by iterating, or by query)
    - for each node of that type:
    - retrieve the property value
    - check if the property value is in the external storage location; if not, add it
    - end for
    - end for
Once this is complete, you only need to process new nodes:
    - when node of the specified type is added, for each property definition:
    - check if the property value is in the external storage location; if not, add it.
You can construct your drop-down list from the external storage data.
Several ideas for the external storage location:
    - unrestricted property choices on the associated PropertyDefinition on the ObjectClass.
    - database table
    - content nodes of a new type.

  • Income personal finance template

    Hi there,
I am trying to use Apple Numbers to do a budget for a very small business. The personal finance template looks great but I can't see how to include income as well as transactions. Can anyone help me find a way to do this very simply?
    Many thanks

    Hi beardyben,
If you have Numbers '09 on your computer (take a look in your Applications Folder for a sub-folder called iWork '09) there is a template called Checking Register with income as well as expenditure.
If you don't have Numbers '09, take a look here:
Where can I find a checkbook register template for Numbers for Mac?
That will show you http://www.freeiworktemplates.com/2008/03/numbers-08-checkbook-register-template /#download
Download the Numbers '09 version (not the Numbers '08 version).
Call back if you have problems with that in Numbers 3.
    Regards,
    Ian.
Edit: in the first link, Jerry shows how to adapt the Numbers 3 Personal Finance template.

  • Is there a way to change the categories in the Personal Finance Template

I am trying to use the Personal Finance Template rather than developing one for myself.  Is there a way to change the Cateorgies that are listed in the template?  Those don't work for me!

In fact, the categories ARE NOT popups:
    Hi Wayne,
Well, then, if that is true on your machine, then I guess your Numbers 3.1 came with a different template than my Numbers 3.1!
Those sure DO look like Pop-Up Menu to me.
The template works by having the two tables work together, with the category values matching, as you pointed out.  For that to happen, you've got to manage Pop-Up Menu in one of the tables. So don't you think my advice might possibly be helpful?

  • This is my first post. I would like to thank you all for all of the information you have posted on this forum. It has been most helpful to a Newbee. I have a MBP17 w/trackpad and click bar from '08. I need a bigger HD, how big can I go? THX

This is my first post, but I have been following this forum for a while and you have all been very helpful in my MacEducation. I have a MBP17 10.6.8 w/6GB ram from '08. I need to upgrade my HD from 200GB. I would like to go as big as I can and would appreciate any experiance you've had. Could I go 750GB or 500 GB @ 7200 rpm.  Should I upgrade to Lion before I swap the drive out?  Thanks, Johnny

    Hi Johnny,
Yes you can do the 750 or 500, 5400 or 7200. Just make sure it is 2.5" SATA and 12.5mm high or less (there is at least one HD out there that is 15mm high and will not work).
Lion: I don't know that it matters much either way, just don't do them at the same time. That way, if there are issues, you have a much better chance of troubleshooting one major change instead of two.

  • What is the Best personal finance software for mac?

I was a quicken user years ago but they don't seem to have an updated version. Any suggestions?

Updated for what?  Home accounting principles are pretty much the same now as they were in 2007: Quicken 2007 for Intel (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks) for $15 here:
    http://quicken.intuit.com/personal-finance-software/quicken-2007-osx-lion.jsp
I would still be using my Quicken Deluxe 2002 if it did not require Rosetta, which is no longer included in OS X since Lion.
