First post: upgrading after many years - tips?

I'm a first time poster, so be kind – or rewind
I've been working in graphic design for 7-8 years. I'm a  believer in using old software (and hardware) you have until it  actually starts to slow down the work/mess up the joy. I'm working on a (not so old) G5 dual 2.3 GHz PPC with a cinema display and am running  CS2. If I've left out details that would be helpful, let me know. I've  never spun the specs out before.
My dilemma is wanting to upgrade to CS5. This means a huge change in my main  computer (iMac or Laptop?) and an opportunity to change how I handle  images, with Aperture or Lightroom (I now use iPhoto — I know!). I  currently use Suitcase Fusion for fonts. So with this next jump up, I  could also have a new image and font handling software.
I'm curious about what others are using. Are you on an older CS and it  just seems like everyone and their dog has moved on? {What do you prefer,  Aperture or Lightroom? Does Suitcase still turn people's crank?}
I'll mainly be in my studio, but will need some portability. This makes  me learn towards a laptop. Hard to make that switch after being a happy  G3/4/5 tower owner.
This is turning into a looooong post. Thoughts or any discussion would  be great. I live in a very isolated place in northern Canada and there's  very few people to shat with about this stuff.
Thanks.

The OP did mention the need for a new machine and that will be a call nobody here can make.
As for the rest, I'm quite happy with Suitcase Fusion 3 but there are some known problems with the autoactivation plugins with InDesign. If you're going to upgrade do it fast. You can save yourself about $200 by buing the CS2 to CS5 upgrade now for about $749: http://amzn.to/ebx0Tr
When it starts shipping, the CS2 to CS5.5 ugprade will run you $949. The good news is that if you buy the CS5 upgrade now you should be entitled to a free upgrade to CS5.5: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/153/tn_15304.html
So even if you haven't decided on the new computer yet, this will give an extra $200 to play with.

  • After finding out that iOS 6 won't be alvailible for iPad 1 I have to ask, is there going to be any updates for the iPad one? It's kinda ridicules if our devices just stop being upgraded after two years......

I was quite disappointed when I read their will be no iOS 6 for first gen iPads and am curious as to if they are gonna just stop upgrading it all together, cause if so that's a bit crazy after two years they pretty much just drop the product?? What I want to know is, is there going to be any more updates for the iPad one at all, to update the security features browsing and stuff like that (not all the fancy FaceTime or seri and what not just the basic iPad 1 stuff)? Cause if not that's is a MAJOR waist of money. $800 for two years of use???

While none of us here can say with certainly, it's likely that iOS 5.1.1 is the last version of iOS that an iPad 1 will run.
As to a "waste of money", has your iPad stopped working just because a new version of iOS was released that the iPad won't run? Our iPad 1s haven't just ceased fallen over, even though they can only run iOS 5.1.1, and are in valuable use every day. But perhaps yours did indeed somehow stop being useful. If so, I'd recommend selling it and buying something else that you think would better suit your expectations.
    Regards.

  • I am a new user of Mac after many years of Windows my question is What am I doing wrong:

I am busy working when the rainbow wheel comes up as would the spinning mouse on windows, I then have to wait for the rainbow to disappear ie the program to catch up before I can continue. It is brand new machine and shouldnt yet be bogged down.
I have to say at this point in time I am not sure that I have made the right move.
I have installed Mac Office as that is what I have used for many years, so firstly I thought there was a confliction with mail and Outlook as window users know that has been an issue with windows in the passed so I have uninstalled Outlook so as not to duplicate. I have cleaned the calender and contact with downloaded  Mac Apps. I am now at a loss what to do next because this isnt a spedy machine. Its a 2.9 HGz Quad core i5 so no light weight my old Dell is a Quad and still has enough speed to keep up with me and is 4 years old. So y only thought left there must be another confliction. Please advise as I am not completly in the know as I would have been with the Windows

As to any conflict between 2 different program that do the same thing and are installed on the same computer at the same time there simply isn't any unless both programs are running at the same time and trying to access the same file at the same time. That is except for AV software that runs all the time.
So having MS Office Outlook installed and Mac "Mac Mail" there shouldn't be any conflict at all. Even if you were to run them at the same time. They are both just Mail and contact programs, in the case of Outlook. They would both just go out to your Email account servers and download the available mail on those servers. One doesn't interact with the other. They just interact with your email account servers, which may cause a conflict on the server but not on the computer.
On my Windows computers I have 2 CAD programs installed, Autocad and Visual Cadd, and run them both at the same time. No conflicts between them as long as I have different CAD drawings open in each. If I try to open the same drawing in each program the program will popup a warning that the files is in use by another program and it willl be opened for Viewing Only or not opened it at all.

  • First use of FF3.6.1-Great difficulty logging into my account on a website. If this isn't fixed right away, I will stop using FF after many years.

First website used first use of FF 3.6.1:
    1. My password didn't work to open my existing account on a website.
    2. I called the site's customer service and changed password.
    3. It would only open in new window. Each time I wanted to go to my account I had to open new window.
    4. If I go to page 2 of my account, I have to reenter login info.
If I go to another page on the site, I have to reenter login info.
I have never had to do these things before, unless it had been a day or two since I last opened my account.
    Anyone else with this problem?
Any suggestions to fix it at my end?
Will FoxFire fix it at their end?
Since I use this site frequently, I have just begun using another browser and might have to stop using FF after being longtime user.

  • Since downloading itunes 11.03 I cannot get back movies on my ipad  or music and i have no clue how it works anymore after many years of enjoying it, I now have no clue and I'm about as angry as anyone could be.  What has happened !!

Please help , I have downloaded upgrade 11.03.. Now I have lost my movies and music files from my ipad and cannot reinstall them , try as I might.  Having used itunes for years I cannot believe I cannot mkae this work and feel very let down by itunes for allowing this upgrade to mess everything up still havent put it right. so can anyone help or are we all waiting for apple and itunes to sort themselves out. They must be loosing money as I can see from so many comment pages else where I am not the only person by far that is having the same or similar issues. I have wasted hours and still no further forward. I have lost all faith in apple itunes and reluctant to change anything or download any other updates, sad for someone who has a ipone , ipod and ipad.

I copied this from an extremely knowledgable iTunes for Windows user in another discussion. Maybe this will help.
In Windows, you can restore much of the look & feel of iTunes 10.7 with these shortcuts:
ALT to temporarily display the menu bar
CTRL+B to show or hide the menu bar
CTRL+S to show or hide the sidebar
CTRL+/ to show or hide the status bar (won't hide for me on Win XP)
Click the magnifying glass top right and untick Search Entire Library to restore the old search behaviour
Use View > Hide <Media Kind> in the cloud or Edit (iTunes) > Preferences > Store anduntick Show iTunes in the cloud purchases to hide the cloud items. The second method eliminates the cloud status column (and may let iTunes start up more quickly)
If you don't like having different coloured background & text in the Album (Grid) view use Edit(iTunes) > Preferences > General and untick Use custom colours for open albums, movies, etc.
With iTunes 11.0.3 you can enable artwork in the Songs and playlist views from View > Show View Options (CTRL+J) making it more like the old Album List view.
If you are a Mac user, all you have to do is start navigating through the menu items at the top of the screen to find just about everything that is mentioned here.

  • Verizon doesnt offer the upgrade after 1 year and 8 months anymore?!

I've been with Verizon for a really long time and one of the best things about their upgrades was that they used to allow you to do it a little early.  And since you dont really keep up with plan changes until a new phone comes out or you are closer to your upgrade eligibility date, I didnt realize that they changed this.  My phone is on its last leg.  2 years is a long time for a device that you use every day, 50 times a day.  My upgrade date is a month away and I'm considering moving to a different service and letting them pay for my ETF.  I have called Verizon asking if there was anything they could do to allow me to upgrade early and they said no.  When did this start happening?  They tried to sell me the "Edge" but thats the same as paying 700 dollars.
Has anyone thought of doing the same?

Read the article you linked. The first line states "In the last year, AT&T did away with early upgrades for customers,"
Of course you can get an early upgrade if you sign up for their Next plan, but that would be the same as singing up for Verizon's Edge plan which you said you wouldn't do because you "refuse to pay out the BUTT to do it". Possibly you just don't mind "paying out the BUTT" at AT&T???
I fail to see where you will be getting an early upgrade with AT&T by signing a new 2yr contract.

  • Upgrade after 2 years

    Hi all,
I just managed to do a complete upgrade (pacman -Syu) of Arch on my old laptop (which I seldom use). It went pretty smoothly, given that the last such upgrade was about 26 months ago!
There were some problems, of course, and I had to use the "--force" option. Here's the summary:
To upgrade "pacman", I had to download the package "by hand", as there is now some prefix (-i686) on the file names of which the old version of pacman didn't know about.
After upgrading the Kernel and udev (which I did first, because I was scared of doing everything at once), the laptop wouldn't boot anymore as the device names of the hard disks had been changed from "hda*" to "sda*". Fortunately, grub let me boot from the correct device and I got far enough to be able to edit "menu.lst" and "fstab". Then, there was trouble at the initialization of runlevel 3. I could boot in single-user mode, though, and the problem went away after I completed the upgrade (with -Syu). Xorg wouldn't start at first, but this was quickly dealt with by commenting out a bothersome line in xorg.conf (concerning my video card, an ATI mach64).
The "network profile" menu didn't work anymore. After some time, I found out that this was due to /etc/network-profiles having been renamed to /etc/network.d.
Finally, there was an annoying problem with the keyboard in X. The "Alt Gr" (right Alt) key didn't work anymore, which on my german keyboard means that it is not possible to type @ and |. I still don't know what the problem with it is, but invoking "setkbd" (without arguments or with "de") once in the terminal or in .xinitrc solves the matter. I am sure to have all the right options in xorg.conf ("pc-105", "de", ...). Any hints on this are welcome, of course.
What is your experience with infrequent upgrades?

Maybe a more simple way would have been to save your datas, and do a clean new install from ftp with latest snapshot, no ?
But you seem like a guy who like to get into trouble, am I wrong ?
Not really. Of course I reckoned that the upgrade wouldn't work out, in which case I could still have made the new install. And with /home being on a separate partition, it wouldn't have involved much data saving.
The main problem that I have with frequent upgrades is that I need to get things done on the computer. It doesn't suffice that most of the time, 95% say, an "-Syu" upgrade works without or little intervention on my side. The remaining 5% still discourage me.
Also, considering that I use most of the installed software only infrequently, I find regular complete upgrades rather uneconomic. What's the point in upgrading a piece of software several times in-between using it?

  • Is anyone else unhappy when upgrading after 2 year contract?

I have been a Verizon customer for 12 years now, always paying on time and in full.  I just upgraded for the 6th time, and am extremely disappointed with the loss of unlimited data AND a $30.00 upgrade fee that has nothing to do with the price of the phone or plan.  It would seem to me that Verizon would want to keep paying customers happy, especially ones with immaculate paying records.  While the person selling me the device (Matt from Hendersonville, TN Verizon store) was very nice and helpful, I couldn't help but feel "punished" financially for wanting to stay loyal to the company and upgrade my device.  Is it Verizon's policy to gouge every cent from it's most loyal customers?  It makes more business sense to keep an existing customer happy than getting new customers.  I've even thought about paying to get out of my current contract to switch.  Anyone else feel this way?  I understand that I'm paying for a service, but I'm already committing to paying $80+ a month for two more years, and they want another $30 upfront without letting me keep unlimited data????  That's a double whammy if I ever saw one....

I've tried to explain this before but I'll make another attempt.
The way a business works is they make the rules regarding how they want to do business.  Then the customer decides if they want to play by those rules.  Now if not enough customers want to play by the businesses rules, the business can change the rules.  Then again the customer decides if he wants to play by those rules.  If enough customers agree to play by those rules, then everyone, (well almost everyone because there will always be a few who complain no matter what) wins.  the customers and the business.  Later, the business can change the rules again and the process starts all over again.
That why competition is good for the consumer.  Some company will always try to do something cheaper and faster.  This works as long as the companies involed can make a profit. (not a bad thing by the way)  Anyone ever try to get a job with a company that wan't making a profit?  Even if you could, would you want that job?
Me, I'm just patiently waiting for the release of my next new phone in the summer of 2014.

  • SU24 - Changing SU24 after many years.

    Hello SAP Security Gurus,
We have never maintained SU24 in our systems (more than 10 years). Currently we have a requirement to update or maintain a custom auth object against standard HR transactions. Please let us know what are the implications of this change. Our concerns are as follows:
    1. Once we check maintain the auth object for the standard tcodes, will all the existing roles having these tcodes go out of sync?
    2. Should we make sure that SU24 is in sync in all the clients before changing it?
Please let us know if you have any inputs regarding this issue and do the needful.
    Thanks,
    Karthik Kiran

    Hi,
    my inputs -
    1. No, the roles will remain the same unless you want to change it in a future date. When you add a new transaction to one of these existing roles, or use the expert mode in pfcg, all changes from SU24 are updated in the role automatically and you need to maintain all required fields.
Note that SU24 changes for existing SAP transaction must be done only after careful consideration as not every existing role may need the modifications (depends entirely on business scenario), and you might unwittingly make changes to some critical roles.
    2. Ideally SU24 should be in sync in all clients for the best possible system setup. It will still work if you only update SU24 in the development system only, if this is where all roles are created and then transported to QAS and PRD systems.
    regards,
    Sanju

    Hi ricx,
    hmm, Finally I got you...
    What you are asking is;
Is it possible to have User exit for Custom Developed ABAP Programs?
    Am i right?
If this is your question, i can say it is not needed as we can edit Zprograms whenever we need.
If you have more doubts, revert back....

  • Outlook 2010 on Windows 7 stopped working (after many years) with Yahoo Mail since End Nov 2013

Yahoo has made design changes to Yahoo month or so ago (Nov 2013). Yahoo now states the Outlook (amongst few other apps) does not work well with Yahoo and Outlook now needs another level of security set up on Yahoo account and a special password generated
by Yahoo Mail. This password now to be used in account configuration in Outlook - instead of your usual account password.
Tried this on different computers and different user account (of family).  On different accounts it reports either (A) "Receiving error 0x80042108: Outlook cannot connect to your incoming POP3 server" OR (B) Sending error 0x800CCC80
: None of the Authentication methods supported by this client are supported by your server"
    Any one has solution/suggestion.
Another question, why Outlook has been singled out by Yahoo now?

    Hi,
Firstly, let’s refer to the following article to check the settings of POP3 account:
    http://www.emailquestions.com/microsoft-outlook/8548-fix-pop3-imap-settings-yahoo-mail-yahoo-requires-ssl.html
“The current setting (December 2013) is port 587 + TLS (Authentication required).”

  • After many years using PP I just discovered I can rename clips in my timeline...But!

Yes and I find it most convenient wondering why I did not think of it or try it before. But...That's where it seems to stop. as there seem to be no other reference of this renamed clip. So as helpful as it could be in a project to rename clips according to certain needs, is there a point to it if it can't be connected to anything else like it's original file or at least the one in the project window...?

I just thought after all that I only have to add the "rename" to its present original name so it will keep it for later needs! I already do this in my media folders but forgot about doing here. That's a bonus remembering the day file names were restricted in length!
    Thank again

  • All of a sudden, all I get is a 1" x 1.5" box in the middle of the screen that says Firefox, and Yahoo beneath that. I have deleted and reinstalled, same thing. Help, I can't access Firefox after many years.

Besides the word Firefox is a reddish square. Clicking on either the word or the box makes it disappear down to the bottom try. I am at a loss. I've always used Firefox without any problems, now I can't access it. I deleted and reinstalled 4 times this morning. Help

    Hi,
    Please see [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Toolbar%20keeps%20resetting?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Firefox+window+is+too+large+or+opens+off+screen this].

  • My Firefox 36.0.4 keeps crashing after many years without any problem. I tried updating, restoring and re-installing but no change.

This happens while surfing different sites. Sent several crash reports but have not received any response.
    Latest crash report is bp-505c9666-c976-4686-a61d-43ace2150330.

hello, the norton identity safe extension seems to play a part in the one crash report id you've mentioned. please try to use norton live update to bring all its components up to date or in case this doesn't help or you're already on the latest version, try disabling the addon for the moment: [[Disable or remove Add-ons]]
