First startup after PC boot takes too long / too slow

Hello there.
I've been experiencing this problem for about a year now but never actually thought it was a problem until I saw how fast FF can really start up on another computer.
Searching this issue on google mostly suggested to delete themes and plugins, emptying cache, etc but it didnt help in my case.
What I noticed is that when starting firefox for the first time on a recently booted computer it takes far too long to start up - 30-60sec. However exiting firefox and then restarting it is actually as fast as it should be. It is always the first startup that takes really long.
I am also sure that it does '''not ''' have to do with the fact that I am trying to start firefox while the whole OS is still loading with all its background processes.
Leaving the OS to load completely and then starting firefox also leads to a slow startup.
I hope someone can help me with this issue.
Many thanks!
Leo
My OS is Win7 64bit, 4gb RAM, using FF 10.0

If you opt in for sending data to Firefox, that includes information about start-up times. The developers use that feedback to analyse problems and improve firefox. As you say themes and other software extensions to Firefox may increase startup times. Another thing you may do to speed up the startup is take the option to load tabs later not immediately.
* use '''Firefox Button -> Options -> | General | -> []Dont load tabs until selected'''
** see [[options window - general panel]]
* for other advice and suggestions read [[Firefox takes a long time to start up]]

    A quick update on this. And @BroSter, find uninstalling instructions for SafariBlock below. CHEERS!
    1) ClickToFlash is not the problem. Just update it to v1.6b2 which works flawless for me. Get it here:

    2) Uninstalling SafariBlock:
    Go to Macintosh HD -> Library -> InputManagers and delete the SafariBlock folder. You'll need administrative privileges to do this, and you may need to restart your computer for the change to take effect.

    OK. If you believe that.
    When the disk is starting to die it can be bad for a moment and then be good for a while. If there was no problem while you were checking it of course it shows up good.
    I tell you those are the signs of a disk that is about to die.

    im getting a folder with a question mark on startup after using boot camp. it shows up for a second, then the apple logo pops up and OSX boots normally. i wouldnt be concerned except this folder with the question mark usually shows up when the computer cant find the startup disk or OS. so in fact what is happening is that my macbook cant find the startup disk for a second and then seems to find it. is anybody else having this problem. i dont like it and want to get rid of it. help!!

    This is correct.
    I wonder how it can be that in the System Preferences - Startup Disk - OS X volume can become "deselected" like it was... I had to re-highlight the OS X volume and all is well.

    Why can't you provide specific instructions here in HT203909 (Boot Camp: Creating an ISO image from a Windows installation DVD) about how to make the USB drive bootable?  The article referenced for partitioning the drive is not dedicated to Bootcamp--too long, too many options.  How do you make it bootable?

    If your BC Assistant shows the option to create a USB Installer, it automatically is marked as bootable. There is no need to have manual intervention to make a bootable USB. Once the process is manually modified, it is supported by the person modifying it.
    You have two or three options (depending on your Mac Model).
    1. Create USB... - Use a USB2 flash drive, which is erased and formatted. If your Mac supports ISOs then BCA will prompt for the Media. Any Mac which does not have a built-in Optical drive will support an ISO. There are specific Mac models which support both, DVD and USB based installation.
    2. Download Software from Apple servers...
    3. Install Windows...
    Are any additional instructions really necessary?

    After I installed the latest security update (2005-08) I noticed that my powerbook takes much longer now to go to sleep. In fact it can now take somewhere around 30 seconds to finally show me the blinking eye (or whatever that is called). Before the update, it went to sleep in just a few seconds, it never took that long. Has anyone else noticed this behavior?

  • When I click on Firefox for the first time after I boot my PC it takes three minutes to but after that new Firefox windows open promptly.

    Hello and thank you for being available to receive this enquiry.
    I like Mozilla.
    I like Firefox.
    In recent months I have experienced and accumulation of problems. Today (September 25th, 2011) I have set about trying to deal with them.
    After consulting your Troubleshooting Section I have made a range of changes that I hope shall resolve problems like freezing, unresponsive scripts, non responding windows and browser crashes.
    At the time of writing I have rebooted after making those changes so I have yet to discover whether they solve those problems.
    However, I have chosen o write now as I already am re-experiencing the first problem I encounter when I boot my PC, i.e. Firefox takes three minutes at least to start after I click the icon. Once it has started, however, ne Firefox windows open promptly.
    How do I solve this? I rememebr a time when Firefox opened with lightning speed whenever I clicked the icon.
    Thank you for your valued help and interest.
    Patrick O' D.

    Hello Patrick O' D,
    In my experience t here are two different problems with the speed of firefox on startup
    # your os and setup
    # firefox - and exactly what you use with it
    Some factors will be down to your OS and for instance what does start up initially, many of those factors will affect other programmes/applications and not only firefox.
    Some other factors depend on Firefox and how you set that up, I always like to have the option to using Firebug but realise it cold clash with other software or slow down firefox startup so I only enable it as I need it. see for instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/performance/

    Every time I open up Firefox, always Firefox crashes within the 1st minute of start up, after the crash the reporter opens up and if I click don't submit, the crash process will happen again.
    However if I click 'Submit' then Firefox remains stable afterward, until I close the window and start up Firefox again.

    Yes, my CS6 InDesign still crashes after all that. I tried starting Windows and then InDesign in safe mode but InDesign still didn't start. The error was the same as before. I keep thinking there is that saved data file is somewhere I can't find it.

  • When I open FF4 for the first time after starting the computer it is very slow to load. From then on it loads normaly.

    I have an HP Pavilion DV9000.

    I had this problem too. Not just with FF 4 but also previous versions. For that and other reasons I decided to by an SSD and install windows and all the programs on there. That worked fine except for firefox. Boot time is much faster (2o secs) and programs (from the startup folder) are loaded almost immediately after the desktop comes up. However firefox still took 90 seconds to load. After some trial and error I disables in the registry prefetcher and superprefetch (I am running windows 7, no SP1). Then I restarted my computer twice. The first time firefox did not load any faster but at any subsequent startup firefox starts in a few seconds. In fact some times it is so fast it comes up before the wireless network connection is established. HTH

    Hello there, mabaaref.
    The following Knowledge Base article provides some great information in regards to battery functionality:

  • Interactive forms takes too long to load - sometimes crashes reader.

    Hi Gurus,
    I'm just wondering if anyone have this problem?
    I just configured ADS and created a sample WD program to display an interactive form, the form is not complex, only 2 text fields and an image.
    But when I deploy or run the program, the interactive form container hangs and take very long to process before displaying.
    After I save the PDF file to a local drive, when I try to open it, it will take very long and sometimes crash my system.
    Even when I click on "PDF Preview" to view the form in NWDS it take very long too.
    At first I thought it could be due to my system and I open downloaded PDF file on other PCs, but the problem occurs too in those PCs.
    Using Acrobat Reader 8.1.2, then downgraded to 8.1.1, still no avail.
    Everytime I open the PDF or WD loads the PDF, when I check the Task Manager the process of AcroRdr32 will hog the system processes and use up the memory. I have no problems with other PDF files, only those generated by the WD application gives problems.
    Someone hit the same problem? Any advise? Could it be the ACF or Adobe lifecycle issues?
    Please help. Thanks for all answers.
    Best Regards,
    Jansen

    Hi Jansen,
    If you are using Adobe Reader 8.1.* or above and activex controls in your form, you need to install the latest version of ACF and that will resolve the issue. And do remember to uninstall your old version of Adobe Reader first and then install Reader 8.1.* freshly and after installing it proceed with ACF installation. You have to follow the sequence.
    For ACF installation you may read  Note 766191 - Active Component Framework Installation.

  • Deserializing obj on network drive take a long time -- any ideas to improve

    Good morning!
    Deserializing objects from a network drive is taking way too long, much slower than deserializing the same object files stored on the local hard drive of the development PC. How I can reduce the time??
    The size of the serialized objects is small (72K and 17K).
    The PC access network drives quickly enough (word processing, text editing, etc). The PC JVM is 1.5.0_09 and the OS is Windows XP.
    Here is the background.
    I had the idea to create objects and serialized them on my server (an AS400) and let client applications deserialize them.
    Now that I have it running I find that deserializing the objects off the server take way too long! Does anyone have any ideas how to improve this.
    If I copy the serialized objects off the server onto the local hard drive of the development PC and access them from the local hard drive the speed is fine.
    To my mind that eliminates the potential for incompatibility between the JVM which serialized the objects and the JVM which descerialized the object. That is, the deserialize fast on the local drive, slow over the network.
    Used both UNC and mapped drive to access the server and I can't see any performance difference. That is
    filename = "//server/java/ftpaudit/SerializedObject.ser"
    and
    filename = "J:/ftpaudit/SerializedObject.ser"
    where J: is mapped to //server/java
    This is the code which deserialize the objects.
    try {
         File file = new File(filename);
         FileInputStream f = new FileInputStream(file);
         ObjectInputStream ois = new ObjectInputStream(f);
         Object returnObj = ois.readObject();
         ois.close();
         f.close();
         return returnObj;
    } catch (InvalidClassException ice) {
         ....Thank you for your time and help.
    BillB

    Could the file be locked on the server?I don't believe it is. It eventually (minutes loads). The delay is consistent. I haven't put the logging to see what part of the deserialize method is chewing up the time yet.
    Putting in code to copy the file from the server to the local hard drive then deserializing performs much, much faster (milliseconds, almost as fast as deserializing directly from the local drive).
    I modified this from another post to this forum
    try {
            FileChannel srcChannel = new FileInputStream(file).getChannel();
            FileChannel dstChannel = new FileOutputStream(dir+file).getChannel();
            dstChannel.transferFrom(srcChannel, 0, srcChannel.size());
            srcChannel.close();
            dstChannel.close();
        } catch (IOException e) {
            e.printStackTrace();
        }I was wondering if there was a more efficient way to deserialize an object than the one in my original post. Or if there were hidden aspects to consider such as buffer size.
    Here's an alternative approach: since the server side
    is written in Java (I'm assuming, since you say that
    it writes a file containing serialized data), why not
    create an RMI interface for retrieving the
    information? The current approach, of opening a file
    over the network, is very fragile -- what happens in
    the network mount point or share name changes?Thank you. Good suggestion.

  • AE CC - saving projects takes much longer than in CS6

    I've noticed that After Effects CC takes much longer to save my current project than previously (about 2-3 minutes). I'm used to saving quite often so this is slowing down my workflow.
    The project was imported from AE CS6. I've tried starting a new project and importing the previous one manually (instead of a conversion). Same lag.
    All unused footage has been taken out and the footage has been consolidated.
    The AE CS6 project file and AE CC file are about 15mb so CC is not any bigger.
    There are about 50 files in Arri Raw 3K, the rest is in DPX and ProRes 1080p.
    I'm working from a Macbook Pro Retina 16GB Ram and all media and cache are on an external Lacie Big Disk thunderbolt Raid SSD.
    My impression is that AE CC is indexing all the files before saving so it's going through all the RAW sequenced files. This could slow down the saving process quite a lot.
    Is anyone experiencing the same lag time while saving projects?

    I'm having the same issue on my PC, saving is taking much longer and is also happening every time I RAM preview. Very strange, and in fact now its having trouble accessing the save location, a local hard drive. any answers for this isse?

  • Are too long pathnames a problem?

    Hi
    I'm using Crystal Reports XI witch Access Database/ODBC and get the following error from the Crystal Report Viewer: "Logon failed". The database doesn't have a password neither is it on a network drive.
    Is it possible that this error occurs because the pathname of the database is too long (length 156)? I also tried to use the short DOS pathname but that doesn't help either. I get the following error from the Crystal Report Viewer: "Logon failed. Detail: [Database Vendor Code: -1811]"
    Maybe someone knows this problem and can help me.

    You can try Long Path Tool. It deletes/unlocks, copies/renames path too long files/folders.
    Long Path Tool can simplify and probably end your problems in unlocking, managing and renaming files that appear to have a long filename.
    Since in some instances, you may have experienced problems accessing, managing and even renaming files that have more than 255 characters, this utility has been made to answer this particular scenario. If you have also encountered problems like error messages that tell you that the path too long, too long path, destination path too long or cannot delete file then this program is definitely for you.
    This will totally take place of Windows Explorer, Far Manager or other file managing utilities since this is maybe used in any type of Operating System even the earliest Windows 95 version.
    You can get it from <a href="http://longpathtool.com/">Long Path Tool</a>
