First synced Nano with a PC, now moving to a Mac: Do I need to restore?

I've moved all the stuff in my library from my PC over to my new MacBook, but because when I first got my Nano I was using the PC, the iPod is now set to update only with Windows. I won't be using Windows anymore from here on out, so I need to be able to update my iPod with my Mac. Do I need to back up the music on my iPod (I have purchases from another computer that aren't in my Mac library) and restore it to factory defaults?

If you aren't intending to use the iPod with Windows then it would be best to restore it in iTunes for Mac which will reformat the drive. You can't update the software of a Windows formatted iPod on the Mac without restoring anyway so simply to get the updates restoring is the way to go. (Windows formatted iPods have to be updated in Windows to maintain their formatting.
You need to copy any purchases you have off the iPod before restoring. Restoring will erase and reformat the iPod's drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings, so if you have songs on your iPod that aren't on iTunes you will lose them if you have no back up. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes

My 160g iPod classic was originally formatted to PC and I have now moved across to Mac. What problems will I encounter syncing my iPod with my iTunes on my Mac?

If it's formatted for usage with PCs, syncing it from a Mac may be slow, it can't store files which are 4GB or larger, and its firmware can't be updated from a Mac without restoring it.

Reset your iPad and see if that helps.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Sync nano with Address Book but the categories are gone!!??

I have more than 200 contacts in my Address Book, but when I finished syncing it with my ipod nano, the categories are missing. I have to search the entire list to get to a contact I want. Can anyone tell me if that is normal?? Is there anything I can do about it?

Yes, it's normal. The iPod address book does not support sorting by categories.

  • Synced once with Vista and now is apparently hosed

I installed iTunes on my new Vista PC and loaded all my music. I then synced my 60 GB iPod and it worked fine. Now when I connect my iPod iTunes tells me my iPod needs to be restored. So then I go through the steps and it tells me my iPod needs be restored.
I've tried different USB ports but I continue to get the "needs to be restored" message.
    HELP

Usually when an app. hangs, it means that the database is corrupted but if it syncs ok on Vista it may indicate that the database on the XP may be corrupted. Can you open Palm desktop on the XP PC with no problem?
If you sync with Vista with no problem, try changing the conduits on the XP PC to handheld overwrites desktop and then sync to see if it hangs on calendar.

  • Synced iPad with wrong computer, now what?

    Hello All,
I bought this iPad a couple of days ago and I was planning on getting a new iMac in the near future. My Core Duo iMac would be too expensive to upgrade so it could have run 10.5. But my old G4 PowerBook Has 10.5.8 on it. So I upgraded that computer's iTunes to version 10. Now I Have a problem because, when I get a new iMac I'm going to transfer everything from the Core Duo iMac to the new IMac. How do I put the iTunes from the G4 PowerBook onto a new computer so I don't have to erase the iPad? The only music I ever bought from the iTunes Music Store is on my iPad and now on the G4 PowerBook. All the music on the core duo is mine and a lot I have no use for on the new iMac. What do I do? This is getting very worry some. Isn't there a way of deauthorizing the iTunes on the G4 and then move all the stuff I bought from the iTunes store to a different authorized ITunes? I have very little on my iPad and do not wish to lose it or what I have at the iTunes store.
    Please help,
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Ralph,
I copied the entire iTunes library from the old PowerBook onto a DVD data disc. I have it in two forms, the songs and videos themselves burned by iTunes, and the entire iTunes library from my music folder, burned by the finder. When I use migration when I get the new iMac, I want that iTunes to be the one I sync the iPod with, not the old PowerBook or the Core Duo iMac. There are only 3 songs in my iTunes library that I purchased from iTunes. I don't think it's a big deal, after Migration, to turn on "Home Sharing" and adding the couple of purchased songs to the library on the new iMac. A lot of the songs on the PowerBook came from the core duo iMac. So there's probably no a lot to copy.
I'm not exactly sure what you mean't by the iTunes backup file. Which file in the iTunes library is that?
    Thanks,
    Dave

  • Sync nano with new pc

I just purchased a new PC, and am trying to sync my iPod Nano (6g) to it through iTunes).  Everything is setup - iTunes is running, recognizes the Nano, the PC is authorized, and the iPad is connected (USB).
Since this is a new PC, iTunes has zero music in it currently, but the Nano has everything.
Is there a way to downward sync from the Nano TO iTunes (iTunes wants to download to the Nano) so I bring the Nano data back?
Referring to a similar post for my iPad (https://discussions.apple.com/message/19438887?ac_cid=op123456#19438887), I tried right clicking on the Nano device, but the "Transfer Purchases" doesn't do anything.  I assume because the music on my Nano aren't purchases, but music I copied from my own CD's.
If I click on "Sync Music", iTunes wants to replace the Nano content - which would wipe the music.
Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?
    Thanks in advance
    Harry

  • Help - I have been attempting unsuccessfully to sync Nano with no avail.

After two hours, of receiving 1607 Install Shield Scripting Runtime error message, itunes has appeared on my desktop. However, the icons displayed in the manual for Nano on the bottom of the screen are not on the screen I see. I do nothave any option button or the computer button with the arrows next to the snowflake button. I am also missing a couple of button on the left-hand rail. I do not have iPod Nano option on the Source menu either.

My Xfinity App does the same thing.  Hope they are coming out with a app update.

  • Sync Nano with Lotus Organizer

    Hello,
I have just bought my iPod Nano 4GB and I want to know if there is any software out there that will synchronize my iPod with Lotus organizer 6.1?
    Please help!!!
    Dennis.

You were on the right track however, it will not work correctly with versions BB Desktop Manager's that do not include the Organizer conduit built in.
    I used version 4.1.1 with a Curve 8320.
Basically, when you reached the point where the Curve was not recognized is where the problem lies. The older versions do not have the Curve USB driver as part of the package. I installed 4.3 which had the correct drivers for the 8320. Once installed I copied the usbrim.* files from that installation to a desktop folder.
Uninstalled 4.3 and loaded Desktop Manager 4.1.1. Once installed I copied the usbrim.* drivers from the desktop folder to their original locations. Open up Desktop Manager and found the device.
You were close. I haven't tried this with 4.2 but, do know that it works with 4.1.

  • I'm still working with snow leopard, now maverick is on offer - do I need to upgrade to lion first?

Just got the offer to upgrade 'for free' to maverick - the catch is it only works if you have lion. I have snow leopard. Any thoughts and recommendations?
I'm getting confused here what is a good idea for an upgrade and what isn't. I don't want to end up not being able to use applications because the OS have moved on I didn't upgrade in time to whatever OS that makes sense.
I'm also reluctant to change OS because I don't want to upset the apple cart. All is working well at the moment, I don't need disruptions to any programmes. I also have a Macbook Air that needs to communicate seemlessly with my Macbook Pro. So I cannot afford to mess them around with upgrades.
Any helpful hints or links appreciated.

    Thanks for the explanation WZZZ!
Since the laptop is about the only real piece of kit that I use for work and communication its not just down to money. I need it to work...
Tried to figure out what I can or cannot upgrade - unfortunately I couldn't find my receipt to check when I actually bought my Macbook. I have therefore copied the basic info about my laptop here - does this tell me what I could theoretically upgrade to?

  • HT201269 How do i back up my iphone with all my contacts etc to my laptop. I need to restore my phone as the speakers have ceased to work.

My iphone 4s ringtones are all the same and there is no real volume from the phone. It will not let me play videos and my alarm tune does not go off. I have been advised to restore my phone but need to back up all my contacts telephone numbers first. How do I do this?

  • HT1476 Using original charging cable that came with phone and now says not supported. Have only had phone a week. Tried it on new Nano and say alert. It won't charge either devices?

Have a brand new iPhone 5S and Nano iPod. 5 days old.  Using original charging cord and getting message from both units that the cord is unsupported. Is the cord damaged somehow?  It looks fine .  Today I was trying to SYNC Nano with laptop to transfer MP 3.

    Hi Gerardo,
You are going to have to take your device and charger cord to an Apple Store. We have no way to diagnose why it is not recognizing it as an authentic Apple charger. If it is defective, they will replace it free of charge, since you are still well under warranty.

  • Repeated ical sync failure with latest version of Desktop Manager

My wife downloaded the latest version of Blackberry Desktop Manager today. Prior to this version, syncing her iCal calendars with Desktop Manager had been working just fine. Now she gets the "Sync Error" message all the time. Looking
in the log shows the "Attempt to insert nil...." error that has been reported here previously. Also, it seems to not be only attempting to sync future events (which she had checked) - it popped up with 5 conflicts all of which were literally years in the past.
I tried the fix reported in one message (delete the /Users/username/Library/Applications Support/Blackberry Desktop Manager and reboot twice) but that didn't seem to work. Any suggestions? Should I use another syncing program with
the Blackberry and the Mac and just ditch Desktop Manager until they get it fixed?

So i just did the same and yes, the sync error goes away, but i think another problem is occuring.
I use Entourage for my contacts and have a Blackberry to sync it to.  Since contacts will only sync with ADDRESS i need to first sync ENTOURAGE with ADDRESS then it moves on to my BB.  Since doing this exercise (above), it seems that ENTOURAGE is not syncing to ADDRESS...does this make any sense?
