First time Apple user, what to do first?

Just purchased IPad2 (Wifi only), my first Apple product, on my visit to Singapore a few days back.
I am used to Windows / Linux (a bit) and Android.
So I need some advice on what should I do first. I have registered a user id and am able to download from the App Store. Are there any other essentials I need to take care of? Any kind of suggestions and advice will be appreciated. The Ipad will mainly be used by my kids for games and browsing the net. Maybe facebook.
I do have some questions :
1) Is any antivirus needed? If yes, which one is recommended?
2) Should I update to IOS 6 (currently have 5.1.1)? Is it stable and recommended?
3) Is there a recovery procedure in case something goes wrong, like hardware factory reset?
4) Can I backup all the data/apps? Maybe I need to look at the manual.
5) Is Jailbreaking discussed in this forum?

1. No anti virus needed.
2. Your choice on the iOS update. A few users have had problems with iOS 6.0.1. For my iPad 2, I'm waiting until iOS 6.1 is released.
3. There is. Read the manual.
4. You can and should backup.
5. Jailbreaking can't be discussed in Apple's forums. Jailbreaking an iPad will void the Apple warranty.

First time apple user here, switching from using a PC laptop. I read that the 2015 Macbook Pro 13" got an upgrade to the track pad and using the broadwell chipset. Will the Macbook pro 15" get this as well? I've been reading online, and haven't seen much news about the 15" model, only the 13". Any updates on when the 2015 Macbook pro 15" will come out?
    Thanks

I just got an iPad 2 and I felt in love with it. First time Apple user! Unfortunatelly, now I want to replace all my PCs products that I have. Could anyone tell me please if the I Mac desktop has touchscreem and works like the iPad 2?
    Thanks

The iMac does not include touch screen capability.
With an iMac, you can choose between a Magic Mouse or a Magic Trackpad. If you want both, there is an additional cost.

  • Time to upgrade:  Long time Apple user, get the Iphone 4 or Droid 3???

    Hello,
It's time to upgrade to a new phone for both me and the wife, she needs a new phone now as her LG env3 is acting up.  I'm a looong time Apple user, and of course the Apple iphone is a natural to pick, however It'll cost $350 for 2 when we use the last $50 credit for new/every 2.  The new Droid 3 looks very interesting and we can get 2 for $149 for both with the credit and the BOGO sale going on.
So which should we get, mainly use the phone for talk, texting and will of course check emails, etc once we get a smart phone.  The Env3's we have now are good at texting with the keyboard and of course good for talking.
If we go for the Apple, I could get her the iphone 4 for her and I can wait for the iphone 5 if it's actually coming out this year.

I currently have a Droid Global 2 and while I enjoy the expanded features of a smartphone, I miss my Env2 terribly for one main reason :  The keyboard was the best!.   The Droid Global 2's slide-out keyboard lacks dedicated number keys and is a bit cramped compared to the Env, but much faster/accurate than an iPhone.
I will be upgrading to the DROID 3 as it now has dedicated number keys and a larger screen.
While I really wanted an iPhone, the lack of a physical keyboard was the dealbreaker.  I test drove a friends phone and made so many errors in email, texting, dialing #s that I knew it wasn't going to be acceptable for me.  It took forever to do basic texting...and I have very small hands/fingers!   Can't imagine how big 'man hands' would handle the iPhone.
If keyboard accuracy/'speed is not a big deal the and iPhone will work for you.  The iPhone is much lighter as it doesn't have a physical keyboard....some people just have to have Apple regardless.
    Good luck on the Apple

They're in a new user account created by the Migration.  When you next log on, you should get a prompt to assign a password for the new account.

  • Is Apache OpenOffice Safe for my MacBook Pro I am a first time Apple User.

I am coming from a PC with over 27 years experience and most recently windows 8 I had to return 2 new notebooks with windows 8 with nothing but problems so I really had it with microsoft and I am a brand new apple user of only 2 weeks so I went out and purchased a MacBook pro and what a difference. I worry way to much and was concerned about downloading Apache OpenOffice for my new MacBook Pro. Is it a safe program to put on my Macbook and is it stable or can I expect problems. I would greatly appreciate any help the community can offer me. Thank you very much for your help...Would I be better off downloading Apple's version of a spreadsheet & word processor I believe they are around $20.00 each Thanks again.

Open Office is a suite of applications similar to Office 2007 for Windows. It is not 100% compatible with Office, but it is close. However, I would suggest using Libre Office. It is much like Open Office because they both come from the same original source code. But Libre Office seems to be better supported.

  • First time Apple user... Should I be scared??? Ack!!

I just ordered my MBP (2.0, 15inch) on wednesday. And if all goes well, Fedex will have it in my hands on tuesday.
Even though the Pc i'm coming from is crap, and the supposed "multitasking" is crap as well.. I never have to worry about the hardware. It's always decently quiet and never makes my desk melt or anything. It just sits there and makes me mad.
So, with the almost arrival of my MBP, I keep hearing people talk about temp. and fan/etc. problems. Is this a huge problem with the MBP's?? Or is it like scratched screen issues with the Nano's last year. Meaning: Are they just a few Mac's acting badly, or is it half the stock?
Please calm my nerves. We windows people (I am currently in the process of "Windows Asphyxiation"), are not really used to spending this kind of cash on one piece of hardware (well, I'M not). I'm nervous that my AppleCare plan is gonna steal my beautiful notebook away... for weeks at a time.
    MacBook Pro     Oooo! Glossy screen!

    ArmyDuck,
    Thanks for the nice note.
I DID get the AppleCare plan, right form the start. It was part of the bundled deal I got for design school. I got the AC Plan, The 15 inch, 2 Gig MBP, an upgrade to a Gig ram, and the kensington lock to boot. I won't say how much, or I might have some angry mac users banging at my door, looking for my head. But, I will jsut say it was a good deal.
I did, as well, order it from Apple themselves. So, they were great to chat with. Most of my friends are pc users, but maybe I can get them moved over soon.
Something I find interesting though, is the odd seperation between MBP/MB owners and ibook/powerbook owners. I called a friend tonight to tell him the good news (he has a powerbook), and it sucked that he didn't have an iSight. Nor does (i think), my other powerbook user friend. Sure.. it'll be great to have that camera, but what good will it do if I don't have anyone to chat with? Hehe.
Btw, two more questions for all you great Mac people...
    1) What version of OSX am i gonna be running? I just ordered it, as I said, on wednesday.. so i' assuming I have the latest version.
    2) I hear the new version of OSX is coming out sometime (next year?). Uusally, windows doesnt update (a full update), but every a few years. So i'm not used to the OSX upgrade cycle. Is it free? Or will I have to go out and spend 100 bucks for every changeover?
    Thanks a ton.

  • First time Apple user having a few questions...

I have a G5 and I have tried many times to download a version of Windows Media player, but every time I can never get it to actually work. I end up with getting a Windows Media.sitx on my desktop, and when I click it, a box comes up for me to choose an application in order to open up Windows Media.sitx. The problem is, I can't find an application that will open it. I don't know if I need to download another program or what, and I haven't been able to find anything about this on these board, but perhaps I missed something.
Another question I have is that I have The Sims 2 game that I used on my old PC doesn't seem to want to work on my G5, and I have been reading posts about actual "mac versions." Does my Sims2 work with Macs at all or do I need to purchase a "mac version"?
I have been finding very similar problems with other programs/games where I just can't seem to get any sort of "install" program to start running. If anyone can help me out, I would sure appreciate it.
    Thanks!

I try to avoid WMP like the plague it is, but atlas there is a free, open source alternative for most content you'll find online.

If you want to record the screen w/sound there is a excellent software called SnapZ ProX from Ambrosia, the full version will screen record into a Quicktime movie. This software can come in handy to record Real and WM files as well. Plus if you buy the Quicktime Player Pro there is a Export option for the video iPod.
If you want to place DVD movies onto your iPod directly read this excellent tutorial here (remember to reset the picture settings on each new DVD and drag/drop the file to your iTunes Library for synching to the viPod.)

  • New apple user - what is iChat and how can I and can't I use it?

    hi there -
just got my MBP this week, and never had an apple before. Loving it a lot, but on a learning curve with some features. The camera, mike, and chat capabilities are mysteries to me. I can use msn, googletalk easily, but with the camera and mike I'm wondering if I'm able somehow to link these into chatting to get/give real-time video/audio - yes? no? how? why not? etc...
It seems iChat costs money (beyond the trial period), and I'm not sure it even enables me to chat with PCs through MSN or GoogleTalk? I tend to think that if the hardware is there (which it is - I can see the camera!) then I should be able to get it to do what it is meant to do . . . But perhaps I'm naive and optimistic . . .
Sorry for starting at such a basic point, but I'm a little lost - can't even figure out how to use the camera at all!
    many thanks
    - Leif

    Hi Leif,
Mostly well and good on the GoogleTalk bit, except that server name should be talk.google.com
OK the Mac Firewall if it is On.
Go to System Preferences (either from the Blue Apple iCon menu top left or the item in the DOCK which is aa square grey item with and Apple and a Lightswitch)
    Select the Sharing pane.
    Then the Firewall tab.
    In Pictures
See from the Second pic on Text based instructions
Essentially you need to create a New item with the button on the Right.
Select Other in the drop down.
Enter the TCP and UDP ports (the second link lists them that you Can copy and Paste)
Give the entry a Name in the Description field.
    Add the entry.
    Next the Modem.
It will be helpful if you tells us what make and model you have and whether you have a separate router as well.
In these devices ports above a certain number (1024) behave differently to those below which is where Web browsing and email apps use and this is what needs sorting as the ones above have to be allowed or opened.

  • New Apple user - what to buy

    Hi
    Thinking about buying this: http://store.apple.com/au/buy-mac/macbook-pro?product=MGXA2X/A&step=config#
I'd like to hook it up to an external 24 inch screen I already have (LG). But also use it on the move. I am a web designer and run the Adobe Creative Suite, as well as MC Office etc. Everything I have is Windows based, so I think I'll need to run Windows 7 on Bootcamp? Do you need to install it with a new version of Windows 7?
Would this Macbook be powerful enough for what I am going to use it for? I basically want zero lag with 2-3 Adobe products running.
    Thanks

One source for unopened Apple software is http://www.hardcoremac.com . Apple in the US no longer has any inventory and doesn't sell it anymore.  If you go used, get black-faced retail disk and not a gray-faced OS X disk, as the gray-faced disks are locked to the systems they are delivered with. Since no Powerbook was delivered with Leopard, any gray-faced OS X Leopard disk won't work on the Powerbook.
If you decide you need the last operating system you can upgrade to, OS X 10.5 Leopard, you may want to have at least 1GB of memory.

  • Apple user ID help

i have a long time apple user ID, eg [email protected], i have now just updated to ios 5 and decided i want to use apples email and get rid of my btinternet.com address, so created on my icoud [email protected], how do i have my apple id changed to the [email protected] so i can compleately remove the @btinternet.com, i tried the normal way by changing my email address, but it wont ley me, someone please help me

This can't be done, not because you can't change the @btinternet.com address to another email, but because you are trying to change it to a @me.com address. Your new [email protected] address already is an Apple ID, and you can't merge this with another Apple ID, nor can you transfer any purchased content from your @btinternet.com Apple ID to any other Apple ID.
You can change your Apple ID to another email address, just not a @me.com (or @mac.com) address.
To update your email address, go to https://appleid.apple.com and click on Manage Your Account.

It says 'To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it.'
However I only have one account. I've tried to sign out and in several times. But it doesn't work. I do remember changing my password recently. Secondly I'd like to add that I got this macbook air 3 days ago. I'm a first time mac user. It had three updates initially. Mountain lion 10.8.2, iphoto and the imovie. I updated the mountain lion, thinking I'd get the iphoto and imovie done later. However now this problem has come up. Thanks for responding. Hoping to hear from you soon again regarding this.

  • First time iPhone user. How to sync?

Finally gave in to purchasing an iPhone. So my first order of business is syncing stuff that I've downloaded to my phone. I've had my friend download some contents to it prior to this. So here are my questions:
    1. Will syncing erase the contents of my phone?
    2. Can I sync just certain type of contents that I want and not everything that's loaded on my iTunes?
