First Time Build Help.

Helll and I am happy to be here. I just built my first computer using the X58 Platinum. The problem is that when I turn it on the computer
will run for like a minute, turn off for  like 5 seconds, and then turn itself on again. It does this until I just turn it off and unplug it. I have
connected everthing and checked them according to all the manufactures' direction. It runs fine with no error beeps,no smoking, no nothing.
I don't have a clue what to do next except take it down to Micro Center where I bought all the parts and let them figure it out,but there
will be no feeling of accomplishment for me. Here is what I have built.
Antec TwelveHundred case.
Intel i7 Processor.
750 watt power supply.
Baracuda 1.5 TB Sata hardrive.
Sony Blu Ray/DVD/CD Rom.
Diamond Radeon 4870 1 Gigabyte Graphics Card.
3 0CZG Triple Channel 2GB Memory cards 1600
I have double and triple checked every plug and connection. The Processor and fan is secured and powered. Nothing gets hot or overheated.
I plug my monitor into the graphic card hoping to see the BIOS screen but no Bios images on screen. I am stumped now and can't think of
anything else I can do. Don't have an OS on the new hardrive yet,but that was going to be after I viewed and setup whatever in the Bios.
Any suggestions or tips.

If you look else where on this forum you'll see a post from me asking the same thing as you did. However, the times on your double power up are way longer than mine. My double power up is only about 4 to 5 seconds total. We also have nearly identical hardware. Just last night I tried the overclock switch and mysteriously my double power up went away. If my temps stay stable and all continues to be well I'm staying with the overclock. I have no idea if using your overclock switch will fix your double power up, but based on our hardware similarity I'd say it's worth a try. It worked for me!

First thing is to remove all unessential add-ons... specifically the sound board and videocard.
Are you getting a beeps at all?
Beeps can be de-coded at the BIOS manufactures website and should lead you to the problem.
Next I'd start working back removing the more essential items... start with CD-ROMs, DVD drives and floppy drives then HDD, then RAM.
All cables need to be double and triple checked for securness. Poorly seated video card is a common culprit.
Final possibility is you may have a faulty or have fried your cpu... I did once.
Hey thats not bad of an idea maybe it will work and our systems are almost the same hehe so i guess ill try it. =P

  • First time build questions

I am quite a way through my first build - quite time consuming but a good learning curve. I have a few questions which I hope you could help me with.
    MSI MS-7030 nForce 3 K8N Neo Platinum
    AMD 64bit 3000
    Corsair (VS1GBKIT400) 1024MB (2 x 512MB Matched Pair), DDR400 / PC3200 non-ECC, Unbuffered, CL2.5
    Sapphire 9600XT 256mb
    LG 1710 B 17"LCD Monitor (DVI)
    Aopen cd-rw 32 x 12 x 48
    DVD Player Lite-on 16 x 48
Mitsumi 7-in-1 Floppy Drive / Media Drive
Windows 2000 Pro or Windows 2000 Server
    Microsoft PS2 Internet Keyboard
    Microsoft Optical mouse
    Tablet Wacom Graphire 2
Wireless ADSL Router (wired to desktop) D-Link DSL 604
Bios - The basic building tips mentions going into bios before loading Windows. Have not changed much in my bios except boot order. My Seagate Sata 160gb was detected fine as was everything else except a cd drive where the cable had pulled out on the MOB.
Should I change other settings in the bios before installing Windows or later. And if so which are the key settings to change and how do I work out what to change them to? (I am a bit green on bios) I looked at the link breaking through the bios barrier but other than reading every single item... Not sure where to start.
I also flashed the bios to the latest version - should I have done this? Or waited till later?
Windows I am using quite old versions of Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server. In both cases including before flashing the bios the setup of devices phase seems to freeze, the blue bar does not move. If I reboot setup quickly moves to where it left off, moves a bit further then freezes again. If I repeat reboot about 4 or 5 times I eventually get Windows working OK.
But the last time I did this I installed Windows 2000 Server over the top of Windows 2000 Pro. Not sure this was a good idea as the MSI drivers won't load. The install program opens and does not seem to do anything.
I am inclined to format the os area of the drive and install Windows again. One of my colleagues suggested that using Windows XP Professional might resolve the problem of Windows 2000 appearing to hang when installing.
Reference material I have read a couple of Build Your Own books before starting this build but found they were a bit light on detail and out of date. There is a lot of helpful information on the Interet but I think I could do with something which would improve my knowledge. Would the latest edition of Upgrading and Repairing PCs  by Scott Mueller be a good choice? How well does it cover bios for example which I understand only superficially or would I be better (poorer financially) buying individual books on different subjects e.g. "Breaking through the Bios barrier" by Adrian Wong.
I don't plan to build PC's on a regular basis but would like to understand more than I do at present.

    Thanks for all the replies.
I will take the advice on bios and leave well alone at this stage.
Will reformat tonight and install Windows XP and see how it goes.
Couple of immediate questions. On my current PC I have 4 different boots but only really use one. My current PC has Windows 2000 Pro with 2gb, 20 gb for apps and the balance of the 80 gb drive for data. Also an 8gb drive which I hardly ever use.
Current plan on my new PC is to initially use the 160gb SATA as 20 gb combined partition for OS and apps and the balance for data. Or are there really benefits for keeping the operating system separate from apps? Using Partititon Magic fast to set up although currently it is only seeing 132 GB although the bios is correctly reporting 160GB. Presumably this is something I need to adjust in Windows once fully installed.
My 80gb drive has IBM ontrack overlay software. I managed to transfer everything to the new drive using PcAnywhere via the router. Which was great as the first time I have got two machines to talk to each other via the ADSL Router. (This was a great relief as I could not PcAnywhere to work via a serial cable!)
My inital intention was to use the 80GB as the OS / Apps drive but based on the other problems I have had, now decided to build and use the system based on a single 160 SATA drive first then when I am sure it is stable go to plan B with using the 80GB IDE drive as the Windows and Apps drive. I then need to reformat the 80GB drive as it currently has IBM Ontrack overlay software because my previous PC bios could not see 80GB otherwise. Considering at that stage installing Windows 64 bit beta on the 160GB drive.
I don't think I need Raid at this stage although I have a little bit of experience as my SQL Server has two Raid drives (0?) plus a hot swop drive stored in our fire proof safe.
I use AVG free antivirus and have the latest version ready to install.
Regarding firewall - confused as to what is required. Was under the impression that my ADSL Router has a hardware firewall. Also the motherboard has a firewall as well doesn't it? Do I also need a software firewall? There is a free one recommended on the AVG (Grisoft site)
By the way. I was a bit apprehensive when doing the build and took hours over it being very careful to read and follow the steps in motherboard, CPU and case (Antec Sonata) manuals step by step - a very slow process. All the cables in the case looked very intimidating at first.
The whole thing is extremely straightforward and towards the end everything became very logical. All the parts I used seem extremely well designed and easy to use. The only part where I had doubts was pushing down the plastic lever on the AMD retail heat sink. I wondered whether I had understood it correctly and whether it was going to snap.

  • First time build check, with some questions

After much back & forth, I’m about to take the plunge and do my own build.  It seems similar to many others here have done, and is pretty close to the VideoGuys DIY build, but it’s my first time and I do have a few questions, so I thought I’d post and get comments.  Here are my specs:

1 Hitachi 7200rpm 1 TB SATA 3.0 (renders and exports)
    64 GBof Crucial RAM - 8GB 240-pin DIMM  DDR3 PC3-12800
    • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V • 1024Meg x 64 •
I plan on overclocking using the ASUS auto overclock feature.  From what I’ve read 4.3 seems to be a reliable speed to shoot for.  The videos I’ve watched on the auto overclocking with the UEFI interface look straightforward.
I’m going to use the 670 to power 2 editing monitors via DVI, and an ASUS P24A6 via HDMI as a client monitor.
For the foreseeable future, I’ll be editing AVCHD footage.  Don’t do much motion gfx work, mainly cuts & dissolves, with a fair amount of color correction & grading applied.  How does this system look to do with this configuration with this workflow?
Also, any feedback on cooling appreciated.  It looks like the Noctura has some compatibility issues with this board fully populated with Crucial RAM, so I’m going with the Intel liquid cooler, which looks easy to install and was recommended by ADK.  With this case and this cooler, will I be good or is there any other type of cooling I should add to cool the RAM or the PSU?
Anything else I’m missing?  Thanks much to all who post here.  Special thanks to ADK, their participation here is invaluable and the advice they gave me was much appreciated.  Were this system my main source of income, I’d buy from them for sure.

    Stu,
Looks like you have done a lot of work for this to be your first pass here as a build list; there is a lot more that looks right than wrong.
Regarding how is this system for your workflow? This PC would certainly do what you want it to do.
Regarding cooling, RAM and PSU will be fine.
Regarding is anything missing, yes a Blu-ray burner.
You did not state whether you want to A) build this and leave it alone for years, or B) make some upgrades in the future. If B), I only have a suggestion for your RAM choice. If A), I do have some suggested tweaks to how you spend your budget for this build.
You've heard it here before, but it is so true that Adobe has mastered the ability to tax just about all of your PC components (cpu, RAM, bus, drives, and video card) with Premiere Pro CS5 and above in order to make HD editing fast and fun. This makes balance important and in some ways a system is only as strong as its weakest link.
Your current plans strike me as:
    CPU = A+, RAM = A+++ on paper, but possibly a bad idea, Drives = B-, GPU = A-.
My only strong suggestion is to go for 32GB of 1600 RAM. You want to do a moderately strong OC on the CPU and the memory controller of the 3930k is not strong enough to pull this off.
Minor suggestions: A) more drives - go for at least one 2x1TB RAID 0 array for media, projects, and scratch (adding one more drive). B) SSD for boot - for spending as much as you are here, I think your build deserves a 128GB SSD for the boot/OS drive - no this will not help after Premiere Pro has started and you are editing, but it will make the PC faster for lots of other things that most users do.
    Regards,
    Jim

  • I can't open any apps I downloaded after connecting to the computer (itunes) for the first time! Help!

I connected my iphone 4s to my macpro for the first time to add some musci, I didn't touch the apps folder.
But after ejecting, I can't open any of the apps I downloaded. When I press on them, they just shake but nothing opens!

You shouldn't.  Downloading the app re-authenticated the iTunes account on your phone.  This happens to people from time to time (not sure why) but making you are logged into the Apple store in iTunes with your Apple ID prior to syncing might help.

  • First Time Buyer Help!!

I have been researching camcorders for a month now and can't seem to make a decision. My wife and I are getting ready to have a kid and I want to people to record lots of footage and have it look nice.
I have noticed two cameras always coming up in my search the Panasonic HDC-TM700 and the Canon Vixia HF S21. Are these cameras too much for me for my first time. I have a new computer Intel I5 Processor and have read some things that a lot of computers can't handle the TM700 60p footage. This worries me. I also want to burn DVD's of our footage to play on my PS3 with the best quality I can.
Basically I am looking for some guidance. Any suggestions are these two the best or should I go with something else? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

It's hard to go wrong with the Canon Vixias - I have an HF100 and it's great.
I can't remember why I chose it over Panny back then - I THINK (but am not sure) that the Pannys in that price range didn't have an external microphone input, but am not sure about that.  You WANT an external mic input!
Also make sure to check to make sure that the price difference between an S200 and S21 isn't more than the cost of the same amount of memory in SDHC cards.  At the time I bought my HF100, the HF10 was a BAD choice - it was $50-100 more, when it would cost <$20 to buy an SDHC with the same capacity.
AVCHD is in general pretty difficult to play back, but an i5 should have enough CPU oomph and a new enough GPU to play it back.  Editing AVCHD footage is going to be unpleasant for a long time since that can't be GPU accelerated easily.
The PS3 is an amazing playback machine.  You can put AVCHD memory cards into a USB SDHC reader and the PS3 will play it back directly!  You will be very limited as to how much footage you can burn to a DVD - A DVD containing a Blu-Ray file structure (needed for HD quality) will only hold 30 minutes or so of video.  To put more on a disc you'll need a BD-R drive.
(As a reference, a 16GB SDHC card in my HF100 holds about 2 hours of video.  The HF200/S200 record at a slightly higher bitrate so will be less time in the same space.  A DVD can only hold 4.7 GB.)

  • Cannot connect to iTunes for first time. Help?

I'm an original iPhone user. I bought a 3G for my girlfriend and tried to hook it up to iTunes for the first time on her HP Pavilion dv2000 laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 1). When I connect the phone, it says "This iPhone cannot be used because the required software is not installed." Then it asks me to uninstall and reinstall iTunes. Fine, no problem. I've done it a million times, I've uninstalled Quicktime, I've tried so many things. I've Googled for hours and have seen similar problems. The only difference between her problem and the rest is that the Apple Mobile Device does not show up in the task manager and does not seem to be installed. Every solution I've come across says to restart the AMD, or to uninstall the AMD (along with iTunes) and reinstall it. However, it doesn't even exist on her computer at all. For some reason, it won't install when I install iTunes. I'm exhausted from looking for an answer. Can anyone help? Thank you mucho!

Try task manager, Services tab (may need admin account to do this).
Scan down the list looking for Apple Mobile Device driver. See if it is there, and disabled, or set to start manually, and if so Right click it and select Start the service.
If its not in the list, then go to Control panel, Programs and see if it is in that list. If so un-install it (as well as bonjour, Mobile Me, iTunes) and reboot. <--dont forget.
Then do a FRESH download of iTunes to make sure you have the proper version. (64bit vs 32bit - your processor is 64bit, but that doesn't mean that your vista is. Download the one that matches your Vista platform).
    Shut down your virus scanner.
    Then install itunes again.
Then go back to Task manager, and see if Apple Mobile Device driver is installed and set to start automatically. Unless you have other devices in the house shut down bonjour (it serves no real purpose other than opening useless ports on your machine), (just right click bonjour an set to start manually or disable it).
Then make sure you are plugged directly into a usb port, not a hub.

  • Problem accessing MySites blogs for the first time - please help?

I have a customer who has installed SharePoint 2013 with a norwegian language pack, and it's working fine, except for a couple of things. We have a custom search web part that lists the 5 latest blog posts, but we're experiencing a bit of trouble with this.
    It's similiar to this question:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/4b1d053b-3b32-4e5d-834d-37f25c8b177d/opening-mysite-blog-links-gives-404-on-first-try?forum=sharepointgeneral
When I click a new blog for the first time, I get sent to a non-existing web page with the following link:
    http://domainremoved.com/person/garrobbi/Blog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?List=c0a7fffb-fa75-4b74-a1ef-523b6c389e77&ID=1&Web=d3c87cb9-6a8e-4ed1-a998-a4d5e546fe27
    and get a 404 error.
If i click back and navigate again, i get sent successfully to the same link but with Posts replaced by Innlegg.
I have also verified that the url of the link is the correct one in the first place, when i hover over the link.
The second problem they have, is that the blog profile pictures are missing. We've set up sharepoint with host named side collections and different url's pr site collection. Profile search and mysites shows pictures succesfully from both inside and outside,
but the blogpages show pictures based on were they are uploaded from. I've enabled crossdomainphotos on the web application.
    Any clues?
    Thanks in advance.
    Anders

I took a quick scan of the fixes in SP1 and I don't see anything that looks to be a fix for what you're describing.

  • Please Help!! First time builder needs help figuring out components for $2000 machine

Hello everyone I know this question comes up alot, but after reading through much of it I still need a little help.  I just graduated college, doing production, and want to do editing professionally.  Learned on Final Cut but as I have used Pro for the last year on my own (on a HP HDX 16t, I know its horrible), I have decided to go with CS6 and learn everything there is.  I don't have the budget for a warrior computer but at least I would like to get something that will 1)allow me to learn and develop using Pro, AE, and PS. and a little 4D in the future 2) allow me to gradually up grade as I become a professional and demands increase.  Due to me current limitations, my independant projects have been for youtube exporting in FLV. (rendering a 3 min clip takes about 30-40 mins... so sad haha)
I have about $2000 USD (not including the monitor) to invest in this.  Before this week I have had no prior knowledge of computer building, I've learned a great deal from this forum, and I am ready to build this bad boy.  here are my questions and some of the possible components ...
CPU - I'm going with intel i7. My question here is whether the 3930k hexa is really that much better      than the 4770k quad.  Is this a no brainer must go with 3930? I do plan to OC.
MoBo - I  have looked at some many versions of this, can I do the p9x79 pro along with the 3930k and      still stay under $2000? is it worth it to do so and get a gpu thats less expensive?
GPU - I've read a ton of forum posts in which many of you guys have said that in certain situations the      gtx 680 is over kill or not needed, and that something like the gtx 650 ti would do just fine.
         - If so how many Gbs?
         - should I lower the CPU or MoBo for a better GPU?
Drives -  From all I gather I think the 128gb 840 pro is a given so check! I will get at least 2 WD      black 1 TB hhd. This seems to be a standard no matter what Mobo/CPU combo I go with, right?
Now the trickiest part for me is what combination of (see below) keeps me at $2000
                                       - 32gbs ram (to start, p9x79 gives me the option to get more later)
                                       - Case that has good air flow, a lot of bays
                                       - Power supply
                                       - Liquid Cooling (I do need liquid cooling if I plan to OC a 3930k right?)
                                       - Blu ray burner
This my delima.I'm still not sure what truly effects Pro and AE the most. Even after looking at the balance graphs, should I go with the Hexa, and better MoBo no matter what, or scale it down a little for a better GPU or memory? Also going into professional editing, what kind of space should I want in a case and MoBo? Besides USB 3.0 what else should I consider? What would I use the pci slots for? What peripherals are a standard that I need if not now definitely in the future?
Thank you in advance I know I am a complete novice, I guess we all started somewhere and this is my start. I could really use the help.
    Appreciatively,
    Jay

  • First time build, problems detecting SATA

I just got done putting together my first build, everything went well, until I attempted to boot up, I can get into the bios and the mobo beeps once, but when I'm in the bios there are no SATA detected the bios is set on IDE and toggling between all the settings is not working no dvd, and no hardrives show up. They all have power(i can hear the hard drives spin up and the dvd drive will eject)
I've attempted swapping cables and ports galore, but to no avail.
I'm out of ideas, anyone have any tips?
Also If it helps, I pulled the drives and dvd drive out of my last computer and they were working just fine.

Give this a try. OS HDD in SATA 1 port, 2nd HDD in SATA port 2. ODD & front case can be left as is. What controller mode was the OS installed with in the other system? With a new system, it is almost never a smooth transition with a HDD that has a previous OS on it. All the chipset drivers & other drivers will be wrong for the new system. A new fresh install is always the only sure-fire way to go.
This is what i started with, the original HD is IDE, but even still, the SATA ports wont register ANYthing, it's like the connection is broke.. I'm getting in touch with them through customer support. Hopefully they will be able to help / replace the board. I posted on some other forums and they all led back to the motherboard being faulty. I even ripped everything back out of the case and laid the board on cardboard, and it was the same thing.
    I appreciate your help.

  • Ipod won't sync for the first time ever.  I am also seeing the cloud for the first time.  Help.

Windows 7 operating system.  Ipod classic.
Added new content tonight (audio book discs - have done dozens of times before).  Went to sync.  Nothing doing.  Tried two different cables.  Noticed that what I added was put in the cloud.  I had never seen the cloud before.  I cannot get back to the regular library.
Usually when I sync, content on my device that is no longer in the library (in this case the cloud, I gues) is also deleted from the device.  That isn't happening.  I don't think things are syncing at all.
It would seem to me that it would not be the cloud that would sync, but the regular library, which I cannot seem to access.
    Help

I have tried the suggestion to reset the sync log to no avail. Anyone have another idea? This just started after I downloaded 4.3.5.

  • First time automator help?

I want to create an automator action that will send an email twice a
day to someone that will tell them my current IP address.
As I've never done one of these before I think the best way to do this
is to tell automator to go to www.myipaddress.com and either email the
text, or take and email a screenshot. Can anyone please help me work through my first automator or give me a lead on where to find help?
    Thanks!

  • First time Vpn help

Ok I have many questions Many. First the place i work for has a WRV54g vpn router. I have found NOTHING on google to help me set up a vpn with it. any help please here on a walk through or anything. Ok next question when i fumble through and setup the vpn the way I think it should be. I go to add user groups and it forces me to change the ips to 10.183.147.1 What the heck this throws all the network computers hay wire and the print server they have i can not get working with this ip is there any way to keep it 192.168.1.1. Finally what ports or security things do i need to turn off or on to connect into the remote computers router. Also i am useing cisco vpn client. PLEASE HELP

You really have two options here.
Your SonicWall Firewall has a built-in VPN server, so you could configure that, point your remote client to the SonicWall's address and you're set - the remote machine will be given an address in your internal (192.168.2.x) LAN and will be able to communicate with all the other machines on the LAN.
The other option is to configure the VPN server on your Mini, in which case you'll need to configure port forwarding on the SonicWall so that the VPN traffic (the UDP ports listed above) are passed through to the server.
The advantage of running on the Mac is that it's automatically tied into the directory system on your Mac, so any user in your Mac's directory will be able to establish a VPN connection. The downside is that it's a little more complex to setup due to the port forwarding requirements.
In either case, once the VPN connection is established your remote Mac will be able to communicate with any machine on the LAN (the Mini, other clients, printers, etc.). The only thing that won't work will be auto-discovery (e.g. Bonjour), so VPN-based servers won't appear in your Finder's sidebar, for example. To overcome this you'll need to make sure your LAN DNS is working properly or know the IP address of each machine on your LAN.
