First Time Capsule HD fail, after exchange, 2nd TC Wifi Failed.

I'm very upset with Apple that such a product with obvious defects would be released to the market. I purchased a TC 500GB last Thursday, setup it up on Friday morning, after 1 hour of use, I plugged in a NTFS HD drive. Obvious, the TC was not compatible with this, so I unplugged it and rebooted the TC. After that, the internal 500 GB drive was no recognized and nothing I did could restore it. I tried restoring factory settings, and power cycling it. Nothing worked. So I returned the unit and exchanged for another one.
The second time around, I was able to get everything set up that way I wanted. All ethernet ports were connected, a USB hub was use to connect to a canon printer and external HD drive. I transferred about 250 GB of windows data to my external HD overnight and use Time machine to back up my mac book pro. The next day, I ran a virus scanner on my external HD from windows vista. After a few minutes, my network went down completely and I had to reboot TC, but this time, I can't get any wireless device to connect to TC. Wired connection worked, but Wireless became useless. I tried everything I could think of to get it to work. I rebooted, check for updated software and firmware from a wire connection, restore factory settings, enable/disable wireless security and I still couldn't get my Macbook Pro to connect.
After much frustration, it became obvious that Wifi is broken. So within 4 days after purchase, I had 2 Time Capsule 500GB fail on me. The first one had a Hard drive failure and the second one had a Wifi failure. I'm an IT admin guy so I have a good idea if the problem is software or hardware, and it is very clear to me the TC has hardware issues.
In the end I returned my TC today to the apple store for a refund. I'm going to wait another month to buy the TC again. It is really a great product with great features for the price, but the initial production of TC is flawed. Please correct this Apple ASAP.

There is a bug in Lion and made worse rather than fixed in Mountain Lion that causes the disk in the TC to disappear.. exactly what you found.. worse by wireless than ethernet.
Apple have not yet acknowledged there even is an issue.
I don't even have a work around.. it simply doesn't happen on Snow Leopard.. which is rock solid network wise.
A few things I can suggest.. clean install much better than upgrade install of the OS.. certainly problems on laptop wireless can be partly attributed to upgrade install.. if that is what you did.
I would reset the TC full factory settings.
Use all SMB compatible names.. short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
That is for TC name.. wireless names.. put a different name for 5ghz.. and hard disk name.. which should be data but has sometimes default to Time Capsule.
Lock the radio channels. So use manual settings and try 1, 6 or 11. And using different name for 5ghz you can set the laptop to prefer 5ghz if it is in range.
Use WPA2 personal security only.
Use very short lease time for DHCP.. 20min is good value and will cause almost no extra network traffic but should keep things updated. You can also use dhcp reservation to keep everyything using the same IP.

  • How do i set up/configure time machine and my first time capsule ?

I want to set up my time machine. When I click at the top of my toolbar it says time machine not configured.
When I turn time machine on through system preferences/time machine - it then prompts me to set up my first time capsule.
When I press 'select back up disk' it prompts me to a page where I cannot 'use disk' I can only click on cancel or 'other time capsule'.
When I click on 'other time capsule' I get taken to a screen with a globe on it and although it says 'internet connected' it also says 'no airport base stations have been found'.
How do I do up time machine/set up my first time capsule ?

  • Why won't my Time capsule power on after shutting itself down?

Why won't my Time capsule power on after shutting itself down?

Suggest that you unplug the Time Capsule from the power cord and let it rest for 15-20 minutes. Verify that the AC wall socket has power by testing another device like a lamp there.
Try to power the Time Capsule back up.
If it will not power up, unfortunately there has likely been a failure in the power supply section of the Time Capsule.
You will need to take the Time Capsule to an Apple store....if you have one near you....or contact Apple Support directly to go over your options.

  • Which do I set up first time capsule or imac

I purchased a new iMac and Time Capsule.  Which should I set up first time capsule or iMac?
I am also a bit confused about time capsule and "wireless" network.  Today my computers (mostly) macs but an errant windows 7 machine and an HP network printer connect to a modem/and receiver supplied by my carrier. Do daisy chain the modem to time capsule or simply us the time capsule as another device.  If it is another device does it create a second network.  If it is a second network can he two be seen from one machine. A netwoek novice

Just use your existing network to setup your mac first.
Once you have everything running you can setup the TC.. it should be set to bridge.. but I have to admit to still using old version 10.6.8 and a 5.5 airport utility.. but you can also load the windows version of the airport utility onto the windows errant.. you still have.. !! That version of the airport utility is a tool unlike the one in ML which is a toy.
Go to Internet tab, connection sharing.. select off, bridge mode.. update the TC.. then plug it into the main router. It will then work fine on your network.. but will not create a new network. It is merely a switch and AP with a nice hard disk inside it.

  • I have an AirPort Extreme time capsule . I need to extend my wifi network range. Which devise is better ?? Airport express or AirPort Extreme ??

I have an AirPort Extreme time capsule . I need to extend my wifi network range. Which devise is better ?? Airport express or AirPort Extreme ??

Since you have the new Time Capsule, then you will need a new AirPort Extreme to match the performance capabilities of the Time Capsule.
If best quality is preferred, you will need to connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection between the devices. The advantage of doing it this way is that you can locate the AirPort Extreme exactly where it is needed...and there will be no loss of signal through the Ethernet cable.
A wireless connection will result in a significant drop in performance, but it might be OK for your uses, if you want to try it that way first to see if the performance is acceptable.
It is really important that the AirPort Extreme be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule.
A line-of-sight relationship between the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme would be the goal, with the AirPort Extreme located about half way between the Time Capsule and the general area where you need more wireless signal coverage.

I don't have a DSL or cable modem to access the Internet ... just a mobile WiFi (there is no cable available at our house and the mobile WiFi is our only option). How do I connect my Time Capsule to the Internet via the mobile WiFi?

    LOL!!
I am in Australia and the ISP... I think both the main ones would fit your description to a T.. big T in particular.
Your router is really unsuitable.. if it is only wireless and no ethernet.. just buy an ethernet one.
Do a search on ebay.. 3g router.
But you can get the TC to join a wireless network.
It is a non-standard setup that Apple will not support.. the option is hidden.
If you are on Lion download the 5.6 utility. Go to the wireless set up page and hold down the option key whilst selecting wireless mode.. a new option, join will appear. You can then put in the ssid and passkey of the 3g router.
But please note the end result of this setup..
very slow speed. The TC is now a second wireless hop from your clients.. this will halve the speed.
In this mode the ethernet are deactived.. for reasons only Apple know, they decided you should not use ethernet when doing this.

  • What is a maximum remoteness between time capsule and device for having a good wifi signal?

What is a maximum remoteness between time capsule and device for having a good wifi signal?

In open air.. line of sight you should work very well over 100M and most likely still work at 200M.
Unfortunately in houses.. there is almost no way to tell. But you can assume signal on 5ghz will dimish very rapidly.. 2 or 3 walls/floors/major obstacles and nothing left.. 2.4ghz should manage your whole house but you might find signal in far corners unusable.  Count the number of walls, floors/ceilings it is going through in a straight path, router to client. You can think of it as a 4" pipe.. and even the angles are important.. if it hits a wall made of brick at acute angle it is twice as thick as hitting it dead on. Mirrors, tinted glass are metal reflectors.. reinforced concrete is both a reflector with metal bars and absorber with concrete.. add a bit of moisture content and it is a great block.

I can see my time capsule in the airport configuration program, but not my airport. Not even when it is cabled.

On the side label find the model number.. A1084 for example is old. It will not work.
The new one A1392 and the earlier N wireless A1264 will both work.

    TM is uniquely Mac.

  • Time capsule doesnt work with telia bredband no wifi

Time capsule doesnt work with telia bredband no wifi.  Time capsule and its wifi worked in the beginning, but now it doesnt. I have tried everything without success.

There is no question.. so if it is a statement of resignation.. then if under warranty and faulty Apple will fix it/replace it.. if not dead you will be given it back.
Are you using Lion? If so did you download 5.6 airport utility?
Plug the TC into a computer by ethernet.. hold in reset for 10sec.. and then redo the setup.
Give TC and wireless short names and no spaces and no special characters.. lock the wireless to manual a/n-b/g and fix the channels.
Then if it doesn't work most likely faulty. Otherwise it is just setup is wrong.

  • First Time Capsule Backup Failed - Time Machine Error

I bought my Time Capsule yesterday because I needed to backup my MacBook (which I bought 6 months ago). My plan was to backup the MacBook to the TC and then do an Erase and Install of my MacBook because of problems I'm having with the MacBook (it constantly hangs for a minute or more - sometimes up to 20 times a day). I thought an erase and install might fix the problem.
After setting up the Time Capsule and connecting it to the MacBook with a Cat 6 ethernet cable for the first backup I went to bed. I noticed that, when the backup started, it was taking approximately 5 minutes to backup the first Gb of data. As TC noted there was 80GB to backup I assumed this would take 6 or 7 hours to complete.
This morning when I checked the MacBook I discovered a message on the screen of my MacBook as follows -
    Time Machine Error
Unable to complete bacup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume.
Nothing else! When I check the Time Machine in Finder, under Data there is the following -
    Patricia Henwood’s MacBook_002332b6d076.sparsebundle and this is 50.82GB.
Can anyone suggest what I should do?
I bought the TC yesterday because all my other backup drives are Firewire and, of course, the MacBook doesn't have a Firewire port.
Should I just 'give up'? The MacBook is covered by Apple Care (and anyhow, even if it weren't it's only 6 months old so, presumably, it's still covered by Apple warranty). I understand from the salesman where I bought my TC that it, too, is covered by my Apple Care for the MacBook because I bought it to use with the MacBook.
Would the simplest solution be to make an appointment to take the MacBook and the TC to the genius bar and see if they can help?

Hi dealbata, happy to hear that yours is now up and running. My fourth TC backup attempt last night failed yet again (at 50.8GB) - I read in a previous thread (which I can no longer find but which was more than 5 pages long and went back to 2007) about many people who have had the message
    Time Machine Error
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume.
From that thread, 'famouswolf' posted a solution which involved checking the system.log using Console.app (Utilities folder). In his case (and in mine) the problem was caused by corrupted files in iPhoto. The solution was to actually delete the files (all those that had an ERROR (-36) message next to them in the system.log. To delete them you have to locate them in your iPhoto Library file and delete them in the Finder. As you can imagine, this is a long and tedious process (I have over 8000 images in my iPhoto library) - frankly, I've already wasted two days on this - and the TC was bought so I could back up my MacBook and then discover what the REAL problem is with my MacBook (it hangs and/or crashes between 10 and 20 times a day :-((
So, I've bitten the bullet and re-partitioned my MacBook's hard drive and done a fresh install of OS X and the applications that came on the install DVD. I've then run Software Updater until everything is up to date and I am now in the course of doing a backup of the MacBook to the TC of the 'bare bones' of my system - it's only 14.3GB so I hoping it will work. Then I'll copy across what I need from my iMac and hope that tonight TC will backup everything.
    Here's hoping!
    Cheers
    Tricia

  • 2TB Time Capsule suddenly full after only a few months?

    Hello all,
Apologies in advance if this is a question that's already been answered.  I've been searching through threads, but didn't seem to see it.
I have a late 2009 iMac (27 inch, 2.8 GHz i7, 4GB Ram) that had a hard drive affected by the Seagate Recall.  About the same time I was alerted to this, the Firewire drive I'd been using for timemachine backups reached it's capacity.  I figured it was time to get a bigger backup drive and went out and bought a 2TB Time Capsule.  This was on November 5th of 2012.
After making a bootabe clone of hard drive (just as a 2nd backup) I set up my time capsule.  I did the first backup via ethernet, and then, per posts that I found on the forum,( I set it up so that it was connected to my existing wireless router via ethernet, and let my iMac back up to it wirelessly over the home network.  Once or twice, when I've changed large amounts of data, I've reconnected the iMac to the timecapusle via the ethernet cable and let it backup that way.  But overall, the backups have happened over the air.  My home user folder is aprox 632 GBs.
I also had tried to set up my macbook (Intel, late 2006) to back up to the same timecapsule, but was having issues and ended up just turning time machine off since I haven't had time to trouble shoot them.  That macbook (which only has 60 gig harddrive on it) has at least one full backup on it's part of the Time Capsule, but not many more.
So basically my setup looks like this:
Cable Modem connected to Belkin Wireless Router via Ethernet
2TB TC connected to Belkin Router via Ethernet in Bridge mode.
iMac connecting to TC via the wireless network created by router. (with the exception of a few times)
Today, I was surprised that, only a couple months later, that Time Machine told me that the Time Capsule was full, and that it had deleted older backups to make room.  My earliest back up is now Dec 6th 2012.
Previously, my 1 TB firewire drive lasted several years before it started having to delete older backups.
Am I right to think this is out of the ordinary?  And if it isn't, can anyone point me in the right direction to try and figure out why this is ocurring.  I'm not really sure what the first step in trouble shooting the issue would be.
    Thanks so much in advance,
    avi

Thanks for the quick respons djcastaldo.
I'm not 100% sure what you mean by a "virtual machine"... but I'm guessthing that means I'm not doing it..
I do have about 64 gigs in my dropbox folder... but the day to day changes to the files in there are fairly small (mostly updates to word processing files as I move between computers).  I don't think that would be the issue.
Would the best way to try and find the culrprit file be to just scan through my home folder and look for large files with recent "modified" dates?
    Thanks so much,
    avi

  • TIme Capsule stopped working after 10.10.3

Now, after upgrading to 10.10.3 in a fruitless belief that it would speed up things, I can no longer do a backup with Time Capsule. I have followed all the hints left about deleting old time capsule config files but to no avail. Tried to run disk utility on it but the drive does not show up under disk utility. The backup runs for a period of time then fails.

Ok thanks. Here is the appropriate part of the log file:

  • First time capsule backup never stops and shows insane progress numbers

We've bought a 1TB time capsule and are trying to get the first backup done.
It's backed up a lot of the first Mac (a MacBook Pro with a 200GB drive with about 170GB used).
Because we did it over the wireless LAN this took a long time, and it went away more than once, requiring a backup restart. (By "went away", the MacBook lost connectivity to the time capsule a few times, requiring a Mac reboot to fix, and our AirPort actually crashed once.)
After a few iterations it gets to apparently being nearly done. However, it now never completes. It says (after a very long indexing period) "backing up 128MB of 128MB" and both those numbers slowly count upward. Forever. We've done tens of GB in this way - there's no indication of what really remains to be backed up or what is actually being backed up, such a log window of filenames.
We are at an utter loss as to what is wrong or whether we're close to success at all.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
It sounds like your main problem is a bad WIFI connection. Time Machine should be able to recover from a failed or interrupted backup, but it can take a long time, even if your WIFI is working well, as it may have to spend a lot of time figuring out where it was.
I'd suggest cancelling the backup and connecting your Mac to the TC via an Ethernet cable until you can get the first backup completed. It's much faster, even when your WIFI is working well.
Once that's done, you can try to improve the wireless connection, and address the other problem.
The ever-increasing size is likely a result of other changes being made to your Mac during the backup. After the first "pass," TM checks for this, and will do a second pass. Normally, of course, this is very small and quick, but some things can cause what you're seeing. Unfortunately, it's difficult to diagnose until you get that first backup completed -- if it continues to happen on subsequent backups, you can see just what's being backed-up. See #9 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, for some common apps that can cause this, and a way to determine just what it is.

  • 4 out of 5 devices connect to Time capsule. Last one to try to connect fails to connect, no matter which device it is.

Prior to problem: All 5 devices (iMac, Mac Air, iPad and (2) iPhone 4) were surfing wirelessly on Airport express.
    Replaced AE with Time Capsule.
Problem: Wife's iPhone could not connect to T.C. Other 4 devices connect without problem. Wife's iPhone can surf other wireless networks. After doing a total shut down of all devices and restart of each, starting with 3rd party router, then T.C., then each device one at a time... wife's iPhone can connect, but Mac Air can not. Observed that in each case, the one that can't connect is the last one to be restarted and attempt to connect. Did this a 3rd time. I chose my iPhone to be the last to try to connect . My iPhone can't connect but all other devices are connected. Every case: last to connect can't connect.
Steps taken before realizing it was the "last device to try connecting" (back when I thought it was simply my wife's iPhone): Wifi Off/On. "Forget Network." Reset Network Settings. Power iPhone Off/On. Power T.C. Off/On. Turned T.C. wireless security Off/On. All these were done multiple times.
It appears there is no hardware issue since all are capable of connecting to T.C., just not at the same time. I don't know much about protocols and addresses. Could it be that T.C. is fouling up the assignment of an address or channel or route or whatever to the 5th device that tries to connect? Is the 5th device left without a address, channel or route to the T.C.?
My security is WPA2 Personal. It's on. The password is alphanumeric 9 characters. On my iPhone that can't connect, the satus wheel is spinning continuously beside my network's name. Tapping the blue arrow for more info shows the window that has "Forget this network" at the top, followed by DHCP, BootP and Static. DHCP is selected. The following fields are listed: IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS, Search Domain and Client ID. Most times, all of these fields are blank. Right now, the first two fields are filled in. IP address starts with 169 and subnet mask is 255.255.0.0
    Please help.

Right now, the first two fields are filled in. IP address starts with 169 and subnet mask is 255.255.0.0
That is auto IP and means the device was not able to pick up an IP from the dhcp server.
I am scratching my head.. it is not one I have seen with Mac stuff or on these columns since I started answering questions.. it is seen in mixed environments fairly often that stuff doesn't play nice with each other. But Mac - Apple has shown fairly consistent wireless functionality.
Is the TC brand new? Did you ring Apple and ask if they can sort it?
When you are using 100% apple environment, to me that is their job to figure out.
For what you can do, I would try and flash the TC back to 7.5.2 firmware. I have heard people say the latest TC that is not allowed but have a go.. if you run Lion certainly download and use exclusively 5.6 airport utility.
Is the TC set to router or bridge? Is the TC the only router?
Could you bypass at least the issue for now using the airport express plugged into the TC as an AP??
