First Time Connection of a Time Capsule

Hi, This is probably a really obvious question but what is the best way for me to set up my TC? I expected it to replace my Linksys router but from reading the forums this is not the case. Do i then need to connect via Ethernet to the router? If so, what does the TC offer over simply connecting a external HD to my router/PC? I was hoping to reduce the IT hardware around the house by having one box do everything, the TC, connected simply to the an ADSL filter into my telephone line.
Help really appreciated.

I'm not sure this will help, but since no one else had any suggestions for you, I'll offer it anyway. It might help to reset the connection settings on your Macs using these steps one at a time until the problem is resolved, recognizing that, depending on your problem, not all of these steps will make sense:
1) Use the AirPort menu bar item to turn AirPort off, then on again.
2) Try to select your Wi-Fi network from the AirPort menu.
3) In the Network panel of System Preferences delete the AirPort item from the left column, then add it back.
4) In the same panel as (3), define a new location and see if you can make that work.
5) In the same panel, select the AirPort connection item, click the "Advanced" button, select the "TCP/IP" tab, then click "Renew DHCP Lease".
6) In the folder /Library/Preferences ( not <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences), move the folder SystemConfiguration onto the Desktop, then restart your computer. See if you can now make your AirPort connection work.
These steps may not help, but they'll only take a couple of minutes to try. Before you try these, if you have any special network settings on your Mac for things like DSL credentials, note all your network settings, because the latter steps will destroy them. If you got all the way to the last step, if things don't work any worse than before, you can trash the saved SystemConfiguration folder.

  • Menubar "Time Connected" behavior changed after recent updates

Hi folks I have been using my AXBS (11n with USB) with an DSL connection.
You can choose to display the time connected from the drop-down list from the Airport icon on the Menu bar.
Before this upgrade (Utility 5.5.1 and firmware 7.5.2), the "time connected" shows the time of your current DSL connection, meaning i choose "Disconnect" from that Airport drop-down menu then the AXBS will terminate the current DSL connection and dial up a new connection -- and from this point, the "Time connected" count will be reset to zero. Therefore this is a time count for a single DSL connection duration. It has nothing to do with how long the router itself has been up and running.
But after the current upgrade (Utility 5.5.2 /w fw 7.5.2), drop the DSL connection and redial will not reset the "Time connected". But if you unplug the router's power and re-plug it, it will be reset. That means the "Time connected" is now counting the time the router has been on and running.
Since I have another Macbook pro in the same which is still running the old Airport Utility -- i did my experiment with the old Utility -- results are same with the new Utility. Then I suppose it is a firware thing.
Guys is there anyway to make the "Time connected" to work the way it used to - just showing the duration of one DSL connection. This is important to me. Because my connection speed drops after keeping a connection alive 2 - 3 days - i need to disconnect and re-connect to revive the internet connection. Thanks a lot.

    Seeing this as well.
"Time connected" used to show PPPoE session uptime. It now shows device uptime.
Definitely a bug. I filed a bug with the bug tracker so hopefully they fix it in the next release.
Yes I filed a bug too. But it seems Apple doesnt care much about their Airports and i guess it will be a good freaking wait until the next FW update.

time capsule first said the back up was delayed, now it won't connect to my home network. my internet is working fine and so is everything else but when i try to connect to the time capsule it says to check my server and ip address and if it continues to contact system administrator.. i didnt change anything, please help!

Lion networking.. just need to reboot everything.. modem TC and the clients.. then it will work.. Sometimes just the TC is enough.. sometimes just the computer. .. Vista golden networking award.. did you turn it off and on again??

  • I have connected a new time capsule to a dsl modem.  It doesnt see the internet. Airport utility says: Disconnected. But it isnt. Internet tab shows PPPoE. Must I enter Account Name or Password? If so, where do I find them? If not, what do I do?

I have connected a new Time Capsule to a DSL modem using an ethernet cable . The modem is working fine and connected fine. But the Time Capsule doesnt seem to be talking to the modem.  If I click the internet Icon in Airport Utility  it shows Disconnected. If I click the Time Capsule icon and go to the internet tab it shows  Connect using PPPoE. Is that what it should be? In the box below there is place for an account name and password. DO I need to filll these out and if so what do I put there--information about the Time Capsule of informationabout the Modem? And where do I find the information.
Or am I completely on the wrong track.

Thanks. The modem is a Speedtouch ST585  v6. How do I know whether it is in adsl bridge?  Also this is a modem-***-router. Does that make a difference?
If you did not put it in bridge then it is not in bridge..
Connect a computer directly to the modem.. open the browser to either 192.168.1.254 or 10.0.0.138 (if neither of those work you will have to check the IP address your ISP has set).
BTW who is your ISP and do they allow PPPoE.. for instance most ISP in UK do not use pppoe so you have no choice but to run the 585 as a router. In which case bridge the TC
Anyway.. open the setup configuration in the Thomson and select a template that says bridge.. run through the wizard and it will then bridge the modem.
And I am using Airport Utility 6.0. How do I get the earlier version?
By reading the site link I just gave you.. downloading the utility and running it on your computer. Or simply google to 5.6 lion airport utility... that is the way I find things when I don't have the link memorised.
Finally, AIrport Utility shows a number in a red dot next to the time capsule icon, currently 2. What is that for? What does it tell us?
Firstly download the useful utility.. but the dots tell you something is wrong and preventing the TC from working.. if you open the utility it should tell you what the errors mean.. I cannot tell you what they are, but it is likely to be no internet connection and pppoe has failed.

  • How can i exclude my macbook backup on time capsule from other imac connected to same time capsule?

we have several mac connected to same time capsule, how can i exclude one macbook backup from all the others mac accessing same time capsule?
    thanks

Not exactly clear what you mean.. the TC will keep each Mac backup in its own sparsebundle.. it does this automagically.. The backups are not mixed.. all are kept separate.
Or is this a security question.. you don't want people looking at the contents of the backup?
You can increase the security of the TC.. but it is too late.. you should have done it when first installed. If you go to the setup you can change security (Secure Shared Disks) by selecting with Accounts.. the problem is you will lose access to all the existing backups. You really need to do a clean start.. create accounts for all the users and start again.
Also note security is not a big feature here.. anybody with physical access to the TC can press the reset for 1sec and get access. It is a home device not a business device.

  • I have a time capsule and two air port expresses. The time capsule is in the middle of my house, the expresses equidistant in opposite directions. I would like the expresses to both connect directly to the capsule, but they are connected in serial. How?

I have a time capsule and two air port expresses. The time capsule is in the middle of my house, the expresses equidistant in opposite directions. I would like the expresses to both connect directly to the capsule, but they are connected in serial. How to reconfigure.
I ask because I have music running out of both expresses, and the one that is most distant from the time capsule (routed through the first express) regularly drops the music signal from itunes. And I am guessing the serial configuration of the routers has something to do with this, but my root problem is music dropout - any thoughts would be appreciated.

If you have the the most current model of the Express devices, the default setup is to "extend" the wireless signal.  In this type of setup, each Express communicates directly to the Time Capsule.
How did you setup the AirPort Express devices?
What version of the Mac operating system are you using on your MacBook?   Or, do you have AirPort Utility installed on your iPad?

  • I have a Motorola SB6141 modem that is connected to a time capsule. I am unable to connect to the internet on my laptop and playstation 3

Ive just switched to a "Motorola SURFboard eXtreme Cable Modem" which is connected to a time capsule.
I am unable to connect to my internet via. wifi on my Playstation.
I have already tried many different attempts to connect to the internet. I have tried to directly connect to the internet using an ethernet cable as well as restarting my mac laptop and playstation. I am only able to connect to the internet on my main computer.
    Please help?
I tried being the most descriptive I could

I am only able to connect to the internet on my main computer.
What IP does your main computer get.. ?? Post a screenshot if you can as it helps to see the details.
When you open the airport utility on the main computer.. click on the TC what errors does it show?
They will list in the summary.
What mode is the TC in? If the setup went wrong it might be bridged when it should be in router mode..
Remember any time to change things around with cable modems you MUST shut down the modem as well.. it cannot change the MAC address of the first item easily so need to be off.. a few minutes at least.. sometimes up to 20min or longer. Make sure the TC captures the public IP on the wan interface.. which is the only way this will work with a pure modem.
The most recent TC can still have issues.. new AC version TC and AE have the Max amount of issues with SB6121 and 6141.. there seems to be some ethernet issue between them..
What model TC do you have??
You can slow the LAN port down or specify the actual speed in the Gen1-4.

  • First time connection, clueless user

Hello all and thanks for the help.
I just bought an Airport capsule I intend to use for the following:
    - To back up 2 computers using Time machine
    - To be able to exchange files between computers (or if easier) simply move files from one computer to the other using Time machine back ups - manually
    SPECS
    1. Computers:
    - imac 3.2Ghz Intel Core i5, 16GB
    - Brand new MacBook Pro 2.8 Dual Core Intel i5, 16GB
    2. OS and software: All of them running 10.9.4, Time Machine 1.3, Airport Utility 6.3.2
    3. Internet conection:
    - A small, Comcast Netgear wireless router that has several opened Ethernet connections. To it there are two things connected: a Sonos system device and a cable connecting the router to the modem, but again, there are several slots opened
    - A medium size, black, vertically  resting DSLModem: Arris TM722 (there is only one Ethernet slot on this, and it is taken by a connection between it and the Comcast receiver)
    QUESTIONS
    1. How should I make the cable connections for first time set up of the capsule and for later ongoing use
    2. This may be an unrelated to this topic, but FYI: the laptop is brand new, so I will need to bring some files and data from the iMac to the laptop, not sure what method will use... but may use a manual method from Time machine if possible.
    THANKS
    Alberto.

The modem is not dsl, it is a cable modem with telephone ability.. the phone cables might be confusing you but there should be a thick coaxial cable going into the modem which is the cable connector.
    Comcast Netgear wireless router
I am not aware of comcast supplying a wireless router.. if it is specifically from comcast you maybe stuck with it.. but i would try to plug the TC directly into the Arris modem.
Power cycle the modem.. this is more complex with your model if the battery is present.
The TC should be in standard router mode and the public IP should then be loaded onto the WAN interface of the TC.
No luck you will need to leave the netgear in place and plug the TC into that with ethernet.. but in this case you will bridge the TC instead of using it as router.
    1. How should I make the cable connections for first time set up of the capsule and for later ongoing use
Ethernet is always best. Especially for the first backup.
Your new laptop may not even have an ethernet port. In which case wireless should be fine.. unless you want to buy the thunderbolt to ethernet adapter which is only around $40.
    2. This may be an unrelated to this topic, but FYI: the laptop is brand new, so I will need to bring some files and data from the iMac to the laptop, not sure what method will use... but may use a manual method from Time machine if possible.
You can migrate your files.. this works well for most people.. but the disk size in the laptop might be SSD and small in which case yes, manually copy the files.. but don't use TM .. if you need to copy files there is no reason to use the TC at all.. the two computers linked over a network and you can copy files directly by sharing on one computer.

  • Do I need to keep my external hard drive connected at all times for time capsule?

Do I need to keep my external hard drive connected at all times for time capsule?

    Hi,
I have a similar question. I have backed up my external hard drive through my computer, onto my TC. When I go into TM, it doesn't show the external hard drive unless it is connected to the computer. Can I access the info from the external hard drive that is on the TC if I don't have the hard drive plugged in? If so, how can I do that?
    Thanks,
    Bernadette

Can anyone recommend an external storage device to supplement my mac book air?  I already have a time capsule but want the new device to replicate the data on that so ideally would like a device that i can connect to the time capsule through a cable.

    Hi CJR
I'm not sure how Time Capsule can be replicated onto your external drive but there is a USB port on the back of TC that can be hooked up to any recent external drive.
Another thing to think about , besides a Time Capsule failure, is the theft of your Time Capsule, so it might be a good idea to consider separating any redundant back-up from your Time Capsule or both my be stolen.
TC will back up until full and then begin deleting the oldest back-ups.  Mine is a 2TB Time capsule.
My back-up plan is as follows:
    1.  Macbook Air back-up on Time Capsule though Time Machine backs up everything - I think it's about every 30 min or so.
    2.  Contacts, reminders, appointments, notes, email are backed up through iCloud.
    3.  iTunes and non-itunes purchased music is on iMatch (and no need to back-up) and any non-iTunes music is backed up on an HP external drive (in case Time Capsule dies)
    4.  Photos are on my MacBook Air and are backed up on my HP external drive.
    5.  Office documents (Excel, Powerpoint, Access etc) are stored in a Skydrive app (like iCloud) and Skydrive syncs these docuemnts with the MS  cloud and my old PC and does not alter their native format like storing in iCloud would do.
    Cheers

  • How do I connect an old Time Capsule to look for data from a previous OS?

Hello. I replaced my old Time Capsule with a new one a few months ago, and broke in the new Time Capsule with a fresh backup of a clean 10.9 install after migrating my user account.
Today, I noticed that there were some folders full of personal data that are neither on my MBP, nor in my Time Machine backups on the new Time Capsule. I am hoping that these folders still exist on my old Time Capsule which I used with 10.8.
I'm wondering how to search through my old Time Capsule and its Time Machine backups. Specifically, I'm wondering how to connect it to my MacBook Pro, and whether I will be able to search for my (hopefully not) lost data through the Time Machine interface, or through the directory structure contained in Backups.backupdb.
Can anyone help me out with a plan to proceed?
    Thank you very much.

    1. Turn off Time Machine in System Preferences
    2. Unplug new Time Capsule
    3. Turn off Wi-Fi in the menu bar
    4. Attach old Time Capsule to power
    5. Attach old Time Capsule to MBP via ethernet
    6. Wait for old Time Capsule to appear in Finder > Sidebar > Shared
    7. Select old Time Capsule in Finder > Sidebar > Shared and Connect to old Time Capsule
    8. Select the Data directory
    9. Double-click on the .sparsebundle file that represents the volume that was backed up on the old Time Capsule
    10. Hold down the option key and click on the Time Machine icon in the menu bar and select Browse Other Backup Disks...
    11. Select the Time Machine backup disk you would like to browse and choose Use Selected Disk
    12. Browse old Time Capsule backup in Time Machine environment, restore data as normal, exit Time Machine as normal
    13. Eject old Time Machine backups (the .sparsebundle you mounted) under Devices in Finder > Sidebar
    14. Eject old Time Capsule under Finder > Sidebar > Shared
    15. Disconnect ethernet; disconnect old Time Capsule from power.
    16. Plug in new Time Capsule (it boots); turn Wi-Fi on (reconnect to network, if necessary); turn Time Machine back on in System Preferences

  • Is there a way to see and have control over who connects to your time capsule wifi network?

Ok, have this question. Have a time capsule wifi network. Have the latest mountain lion on my mac pro. I know if you go into airport utility, and you click on the picture of my timecapsule it shows what clients are connected to my time capsule aka using my internet etc.
What I want to know, is there somewhere I can go on the mac where I can view who is connected to my time capsule wifi in more detail, see amounts of data they are using, and maybe even boot them off, or ban there computer from the network for a while if need be? Trying to assess what family members are using up all our data, and want to ban the appropriate offenders
Even if Mac doesnt have anythink, if you know any third parties from the app store that have an app that is like a "tap" on the top of your Mac that shows networking details, that would be great too!
    Thanks heaps!

Nope.. TC are not burdened with controls.. don't you know..
In fact you will find it hard to find a wireless router on the market that mets your specs.. but there is a great 3rd party firmware.. called gargoyle.. this can be loaded like an official firmware in a NETGEAR WNDR3800 which is a fairly cheap very good solid wireless router.. bridge your TC behind this router running gargoyle and you can set quota for all your family members (kids I imagine). Quota can be set for daily, weekly even hourly.. and you can apply throttles or qos.. none of these controls even exist in the TC.

  • Can't Connect to My Time Capsule Backups, Please Help!!!

I have been using Time Machine/Time Capsule to back my data up for over a year. I bought a new MacBook Pro this morning. I did not want to use Migration Assistant to transfer everything over because there were many bugs and corruptions on my old disk and was scared that would all be transferred to my new machine. It was time for a fresh start.
I set up my new computer and transferred most of the files I needed via a flash drive. I am now trying to set up my MacBook Pro to connect to my Time Capsule backup disk via Time Machine, but once I enter Time Machine it does not allow me to go "back in time" to see all of my previous backups and restore points. There are some really important files I am trying to get to, but this computer isnt connecting to the Time Capsule backups. The old computer has already been completely reformatted, but it is still able to access the Time Capsule backups.
I have done some internet research and learned that Time Machine uses a computer's ethernet MAC address to allow access. There are some codes posted on various websites that allow to alter what Time Machine thinks you MAC address is so that you can access your backups with a new computer/different logic board. None of these Terminal workarounds worked for me. The Genius Bar and Apple Care couldn't help either.
I am hoping somebody can help me out. I understand I can use my old computer to get into Time Machine and retrieve what I need then transfer those to the new machine. But there must be a way to allow a new computer to fully access Time Capsule backups, but curiously, I can't find it. I rather have my new computer have full access because I am selling the old laptop and so I wont be able to use it to access my backups any longer.
Sorry for the long explanation, but I hope that gives someone all the facts required to both understand what I am saying and help me fix the problem.
    -Amir

Right now it is just empty because I have unmounted and disconnected my Time Capsule. I'm trying a low-tech work around to see if this works, but much rather do it the "right way."
What I am doing is this:
    (1) Use Migration Assistant to copy everything from the Time Capsule to the new machine (this is exactly what I was trying to avoid initially). Migration Assistant has been copying files for about 5 hours now (still not sure what is going to happen).
    (2) Create a full backup on Time Capsule with my MacBook Pro now that it has everything from the Time Capsule on it.
    (3) Do a fresh install of Snow Leopard.
    (4) Hopefully, have the fresh start on my machine I wanted, but still have access to at least one archived copy of my old computer and files/folders.
Does this make sense? Basically, the new machine does not allow me to access the old backups. So I am handicapping the machine now by reverting to my old settings via Migration Assistant, will back that up, then start all over from scratch again but hopefully have the peace of mind that my files are not gone because I will at least have that one copy of all my old copies in a Time Capsule backup that the new machine can access.

  • I can't connect with the Time Capsule.

    Hello everyone,
Some years ago, I bought a Time Capsule. Until now, I didn't want to use it as an extern HD.
    So I tried today.
I am using it for a year now, as main router. Several computers and iDevices are using it.
Because I had forgotten some things - and I hadn't wrote it down - I decided  to reset it and configure it again.
Since then, the internet has become slower - and I my Macbook pro can't connect to the Time Capsule's disk.
In Finder's everything fine. Left, under 'Shared', I can see the Time Capsule as a HD.
When I click on it, I see: "No Connection". Then I select "Connect As", and I fill in the Time Capsule password.
It tries to connect a few minutes, but then I get the message:
"The backup disk could not be found. Make sure the backup disk is connected or open Time Machine preferences to select a different backup disk."
In the Airport Utility, there's a green light.
*My firmware has the newest updates
    *I am using Snow Leopard
*I am using newest update of the Airport Utility
*Since reset, internet's fine but a bit slower.
    Other Questions:
*Can I use my Time Capsule for other things than only Time Machine (backup)?
*Can I divide it in parts? (Backup, User)
*Can I backup multiple devices on it? (Macbook Pro, iMac, Macbook Air etc.)
    Hope you can help me!

What actual model is the TC.. the A1xxx number from the rubber base mat???
As they age they become unreliable. Some earlier and some at 3year mark.
It greatly depends on the setup of the existing network.
I would recommend a downgrade in the TC firmware.. as with Snow Leopard there is no advantage to you in the later firmware.
Go to the airport utility and select firmware update.. hold down the option key when you make the selection and all the previous versions available for your model will come up. I recommend using 7.5.2
Do another reset of the device. This time a full factory reset.. and start the configuration again.
Ignore update to firmware requests.. turn off the reminder.
Set all names to SMB standard. short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric. TC name, wireless names, hard disk name.
For wireless I recommend you use wpa2 security with 8-12 character passkey.. pure alphanumeric.
Set to manual for radio channels and test 1, 6, 11 in turn for the best.
Depending on the broadband you use, the TC must be in router or bridge mode.. tell us more if you need help for this.
If you think the TC is slowing you down, do a test with direct connection to the broadband modem and give us the speed comparison.. direct and via the TC ethernet or wireless.. tell us which though.. wireless will always be slower than ethernet.
If you have issues still with the hard disk it might need some work.. older models the disk might need to be erased .. please open any time machine backup and run a verify.

    Other Questions:
*Can I use my Time Capsule for other things than only Time Machine (backup)?
Yes, but the TC is designed primarily for Time Machine.. if you store files, there is no method in the TC to back up those files.. do not make them the only store.
*Can I divide it in parts? (Backup, User)
You cannot partition a TC .. not without removing the disk. You can create a disk image.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
*Can I backup multiple devices on it? (Macbook Pro, iMac, Macbook Air etc.)
You can use multiple devices with TM. Be aware you need lots of free space for this to be successful. So you need to add up the total you want to backup on each computer.. and at least double it.
