First time import

All,
First time on the forum, so thanks in advance. Have downloaded L/R5 and am attempting to import for the first time. Source is "EOS_DIGIGTAL" SD card from Canon EOS. All pictures are on the card. When selecting "Import", a new window opens which is a "Copy as DNG" which, during reading all tutorials, is never mentioned. I would like to just import directly from the source card to Macintosh HD. Also, "NO PHOTOS" shows as well. Again, thanks for the help.

First-time import of 50G -- a good idea?

Hi folks, I'm be grateful for any "best practice" suggestions about setting up a large database of photos for the first time.
I just moved all my photos to a external raid drive and upgraded to Lightroom CC. My plan is to create one big catalog and filter it by date (at least to start with) while I build collections as I need them. Can anyone see any problems with this approach, or recommend a better way?

Thanks elie-d, another excellent point. I have several LR 3 catalogs that are focused on a specific subset of images, and have upgraded a few of them. However this is the first time I've had all my images in one place, which is why I was looking for a new approach.

First time importing CD - easy question

I'm about to import my first CD into iTunes. I have almost no experience with iTunes. The goal is convert my 500 or so CDs to ALAC.
I've learned how to set iTunes to ALAC and I've popped in a CD. I can see iTunes has already retrieved the CD title and track names.
What I don't see is the cover art. When I rip the CD to ALAC, will the cover art be embedded in the file? I want to make sure the cover art is in there so it displays even when I'm not connected to the internet.
Can anyone help?

I did notice that I had to add the picture to the "get info" page several times before all thumbnails in the folder showed the image art. iTunes showed the art right away, but for some reason the thumbnails in the file folder didn't all convert. Some did - some didn't.
I guess that's just a glitch or a bug.

Opening Project First Time from Version Control. RoboSource Node

Four writers have upgraded successfully. My fifth is having issues...
She has Serena Dimensions SCC installed as well (another source control product - used by Applications, not the authors or Infra.
Problem: When she is establishing the root path (and the Browse RoboSource Node window opens, but it does not populate, even after 20 minutes. Reboot did not work, neither did manually removing Serena Dimensions SCC. I have verified that she has a connection to the database (via RSC Explorer) and can see the project (as well as the RH7 version of the project). We have

1.1    Using a New Project for the First Time
IMPORTANT NOTE:
The author must have local administrator rights on the machine. If the user has a privileged account, they must set up full local control of their work folder (specified in 1.1.2.8).
1.1.1    Install RoboHelp and RoboSource Control
1.    Download appropriate software packages, including all patches, from Adobe.
2.    Launch RoboHelp Installer. Select the following options for installation:
o   RoboHelp for HTML
o   RoboSource Control (Client)
o   CS4 Script Extender
INSTALLATION NOTES
Installation of each component is separate and may take up to 30 minutes. You do not have to install RoboHelp for Word.
Only select the Client Install for RoboSource Control.
3.    Install all patches in the order specified by the vendor. Check with the technical communicator on which version is currently in use for patching.
1.1.2    Open the Project
1.    Launch RoboSource Control.
2.    Establish a database connection per section 3.3.1.
3.    Close RoboSource Control.
4.    Launch RoboHelp 8 for HTML.
5.    Click Open under Recent Projects under the main frame (do not use title bars).
6.    Click the Open Project from version control button (shown below).
7.    Make sure that RoboSource Control 3.1 is highlighted as the Version Control Provider and the checkbox for “Make this my default selection” is checked. Click OK.
8.    Configure the Source Control system as follows:
Connection: PROD
Root Path: Click the … button and navigate to the (project name) root in the database and click OK. This may take several minutes.
Connection Mode: Online
Get to Local Path: Click the … button and navigate to your Data folder. Select Make New Folder under Data and give the folder a unique name to help you identify the files as for the Support KB in RoboHelp.
9.    Click OK when you have configured source control. A copy of the database is now being downloaded to the path you specified. This may take up to 20 minutes.
You can verify that installation is proceeding either by watching your local path fill with files or keeping an eye on the CPU usage of the RSO3MiddleTierService and RoboHelpHTML files under Task Manager.
10. Once transfer is complete, highlight Tier1KB.xpj and click Open. It may take several minutes to open the project the first time. It is typical for the snippet file to check out the first time you open the project and the first time each day that you save all project files.
11. Once the project is open, set Version Control properties:
a.         Select Tools > Options.
b.         On the Version Control tab, select all options. This will prompt the user on each version control action they take.
12. Test a check out/check in to validate correct installation and source control operation.

IPhoto nightmare. Tried to import photos using Nikon software for the first time and all my photos disappeared from iPhoto 8.1.2 (and everything from itunes too). Newly reinstalled iPhoto crashes as soon as I import anything now.

Macbook OSX 10.5.8, iPhoto 8.1.2. I just tried to import some photos using Nikon software (View NX2) for the first time. When I next looked into iPhoto it was empty (so was iTunes but that's another story). I had backed up photos fairly recently but don't use time machine. Searched in vain everywhere and must have done something wrong because iPhoto wouldn't then open at all, saying it was unreadable. After a lot more attempts to recover I uninstalled iPhoto and the receipts and reinstalled from my original disc. It seemed to be ok and imported some photos from my iphone but as soon as the import is complete iPhoto crashes and when opened again it is empty. Have tried this several times and have shut down and have tried rebuilding with the alt and cmd buttons but nothing seems to help. Any ideas?

not a reply but not sure how to add something to my own thread! It seems that Desktop was damaged too as when I try to open it a screen says there is no application selected to open Desktop with. No idea what I should choose! Any help appreciated, have really made a mess of my MacBook this time.

For the first time I hate Firefox! Important time-saving feature removed (4.0)

For the first time I hate Firefox (4.0).
They removed the feature for the user to jump back multiple pages at once. I use this MANY MANY times a day and now I have to go back one page at a time until I get back to where I want to go. IF I have to go back (say) 10 pages or so it takes forever and I have to wait for the page to show to see if that is the one I wanted or have to go back further. This is a HUGE waste of time.
IF Firefox does not restore this feature soon I will have no choice but to find another browser that has this feature. I cannot and will not waste my time with a browser that doesn't have this important feature.
Also, 4.0 is regularly crashing (much more than before).

It is still there. You can get the drop down list by either right-clicking on the back/forward buttons, or holding down the left button until the list appears.
If you want the drop-down arrow you can add it with the Back/forward dropmarker add-on - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/backforward-dropmarker

I want to create for the first time ever an iPhoto library on my Mac Mini from all of my seperate external hard drives over the years. Instead of filling my Mac Mini hard drive space with all of the pics can I import it to a seperate Apple hard drive.

I want to creat for the first time on my Mac Mini an iPhoto library. I have many seperate hard drives with pics I want to import but are concerned I will fill the hard drive with pics alone. Can I install the pics on one larg (1TB) external apple hard drive and use iPhoto functions still with the pics being installed on a seperate drive from the iPhoto OS?

This is our resident iPhoto guru, Terence Devlin's, advice:
You can move your iPhoto Library to an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Once that is done you can import directly into the iPhoto library on the external HD.

Yu are trying to impoort photos taken by or saved to the iPod, right? If the photos were synced to the iPod then iPhot does not work.

The correct photo (light/color/etc) seems to be there and then a second later the photo changes. It's almost like it's showing a quick enhanced version then back to basic raw image. Started within last two updates.
Is there a fix or is this the straw that forces a switch to Lightroom?

Just recall that Aperture (or any other 3rd party raw converter) has NO information about the JPEG preview and how it was made. That information is camera-vendor proprietary.
Also note that there are like 6 "picture styles" in camera and this change you're seeing is entirely dependent on how you have them set. If you have your camera set to "vivid" or something you'll see more of a change than if your on-camera is set to "faithful."
That said, people here ALSO complain that Aperture's initial renders are TOO vivid, the exact opposite of your complaint, so you can't please everybody (in some cases, it seems you can't please ANYBODY ;-)
Aperture provides a starting point. Again, if you don't like it, you can tell Aperture to go with a "punchier" interpretation at its first render. In the import dialog, try setting Aperture to use the "auto enhance" preset which is built in. Aperture will add a little vibrancy adjustment, and it will add a curve, which will greatly add punch to the image. If you want adjustments in a different direction, you can create a preset and set it at import.
The only thing Aperture CANNOT do is what you're asking, which is "take the JPEG that my camera vendor generates through some voodoo and try and render the raw file just like that." It's, unfortunately, impossible to do.

Hello, do you mean Download?
In Mail's Window Menu, choose Connection Doctor, any red dots for status, if so what is the message?
Then click the Show Details button & Check again.

If neither iPhoto not IC can seethe card it might suggest an issue with the card or the ports on the camera/mac.
Try reformat the card, change the ports and/or use a USB Card Reader.

Problems Importing into LR5 for the first time.

Sorry. although I understand where you are coming from, I really don't have anything to add to my previous post. If no card reader, copy from camera to hard disk if you can. If you cant, then buy a card reader.. I mean, maybe you or somebody will come up with something else before it comes down to that, but if not..
PS - It's critical that your camera is emulating a disk drive. Is it? Can you browse to and open the files using your OS? if not, Lr won't stand a chance.

First time ever with this problem, importing an mp3 album...

I encountered a problem last night, and it's the first time ever that I see this happening.
I bought Sigur Ros' latest album from their website, as 320kbps mp3s, but for some reason, iTunes completely refuses to import or play it. No error messages, nothing happens at all.
WMP still plays it fine. I tried stripping all the ID tag info, renaming the tracks, to no avail.
I did email them telling of my problem but got no answer yet, so I thought I'd ask here in case someone has ever had the same issue...
I have more than 1050 albums, all either downloaded from sources like iTunes and eMusic or ripped from my own CDs... Never had this particular problem before!

I ran into this problem as well and it's driving me crazy. Glad to hear the you've contacted them and they're aware.
Here's how I solved it. It's totally lame tho... They have to fix the files!
- Load each file in Quicktime Pro.
- Save as a flat movie.
- Import the saved movie in iTunes.
As I said, totally lame but it worked and the saved movie even kept the tags intact (so I didn't have to re-enter all these funky track names).
The weird thing is that iTunes doesn't appear to be confused about this not being a movie file. Maybe it's because the movie is flat (its resolution is 0 x 0) so it just treats it like it would any MP3.
Anyhow, very frustrating to do the right thing and buy straight from the artist only to not have it load in my music library! As soon as those files are fixed, I plan on re-downloading.

Building a system for the first time

I recently posted a few weeks back about buying a system from either Dell or HP http://forums.adobe.com/thread/732545?tstart=0. I quickly learned that those systems were not going to fit my need based on my budget. So, I decided after researching components that I will build a computer by hand for the first time. I am still operating on a budget of around $1000, but I'm giving the budget a bit of flexibility so I don't limit my options. I am a hobbyist who only has experience using Power Director on my laptop, but I had a lot of fun editing for the first time and I want to step up my game. With the new system, I plan to use adobe premiere cs5 and after effects. I will capture my video from either an HD Helmet cam or HD flip format is MPEG-4 AVC/H.264. So where I need help is selecting the right things to optimize my performance. The following is a list of items I'm looking with their prices. Please help me decide what will be right for me. I have a few questions for this selection. I've currently budgeted approximately $250 for ram. I'm looking at going with 12GB. I certainly don't have the budget for 24GB, but what about 16GB?
Do I look for 1333 or 1600? 2GB or 4GB sticks? Would I be fine if I bought say 2 packs of 6GB ram, both same manufacturer and same type or would I want to buy 1 pack of 12GB?

I don't think I can do a raid setup based on my budget, but I saw this as an option on the thread for storage rules is to use the on-board IHCR or Marvell chip. I don't know really anything about this, but what would the price be to explore this option?

Everywhere I look this cooler seems to get great reviews. I figure it could be a good idea to get a good cooler if I get a mid-tower case.

Seems like we are planning very similar PCs. My build is going to be for: amateur video editing including animation mainly with CS5, application design and coding mainly with MS Visual Studio 2008, HTPC (until I build a cheap dedicated unit for the TV), general family computing. I am new to this stuff, but can at least share some pricing and my decision making process so far.
Here is what I have selected so far regarding the parts:
MotherBoard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R x58
Seems like one of the lower cost x58 MBs and has some decent reviews. Wait for a sale, you should be able to find this for around $180.00. That is how much I got it for from New Egg (straight up with savings code no rebate), should be arriving on my doorstep tomorrow. Also, I think Fry's has it now for $170.00 in store, but that includes a $20.00 rebate and tax.
PowerSupply: Corsair TX650W
Some might think this is on the low side. On the other hand, I have gotten other conflicting advice, stating that many people overestimate their actual power needs. So who knows. I have read that a PSU works more efficient when it is matched to the power needs - meaning that a 1000w PSU that is generally seeing 200w usage might not be so efficient. Anyway, I got the PSU for $50.00 from New Egg (with rebate), and it has a good reputation, so we will see how it goes.

I was planning on a lower cost card, but then noticed this card for sale over the weekend for $178.00 (with rebate), so I ordered one. I have read the GTX460 has reasonable power requirements, and can be made to take advantage of CUDA/Mercury with CS5 (although haven't done much research into that). This particular version based on reviews, seems fairly quite with the twin fans. It's possible I overspent a bit on this card considering my needs, time will tell.

I am fortunate to live near a Fry's and MicroCenter ($200.00). From reading the forum, seems like this is generally the lowest CPU folks go in terms of building an editing machine. I understand the argument that for only $30.00 more, one can upgrade to the i7 950. On the other hand, that argument could be made for many of the components, and then before you know it, a little extra here and there, and the budget is shot:) So I am planning to draw the line at the 930.
Here are my undecided’s:
Memory
I am up in the air between 6or12gig/module compatibility/cost. But one thing for you to keep in mind, is the official memory certified for the motherboard you select. For the Gigabyte motherboard, I missed out on a recent RAM deal, because the RAM was not officially certified for the board. Some people tell me this is important, while others say "RAM is RAM" and no big deal. Something to consider.
HardDrives
Same as you, considering the Samsung Spinpoint F3. Good prices now at MicroCenter on the 16MB cache models in 500 and 1TB sizes. I just don't know if larger cache sizes are important or not, since they are also offered in 32MB and higher.
Anyway, good luck with your build and hope it works well.
