First time importing CD - easy question

I'm about to import my first CD into iTunes.  I have almost no experience with iTunes.  The goal is convert my 500 or so CDs to ALAC.
I've learned how to set iTunes to ALAC and I've popped in a CD.  I can see iTunes has already retrieved the CD title and track names.
What I don't see is the cover art.  When I rip the CD to ALAC, will the cover art be embedded in the file?  I want to make sure the cover art is in there so it displays even when I'm not connected to the internet.
Can anyone help?
-JOHN

Thanks for the reply, ejpre.  You answered my question perfectly.
I did notice that I had to add the picture to the "get info" page several times before all thumbnails in the folder showed the image art.  iTunes showed the art right away, but for some reason the thumbnails in the file folder didn't all convert.  Some did - some didn't.
I guess that's just a glitch or a bug.

  • First time import

    All,
First time  on the forum, so thanks in advance. Have downloaded L/R5 and am attempting to import for the first time. Source is "EOS_DIGIGTAL" SD card from Canon EOS. All pictures are on the card. When selecting "Import", a new window opens which is a "Copy as DNG" which, during reading all tutorials, is never mentioned. I would like to just import directly from the source card to Macintosh HD. Also, "NO PHOTOS" shows as well. Again, thanks for the help.

Hmm...that's strange. Try this: From the FCE menu bar, select Window>Arrange>Standard
If that doesn't do the trick, your FCE Preferences may have gotten corrupted. Trash them exactly as described here:

  • First-time import of 50G -- a good idea?

Hi folks, I'm be grateful for any "best practice" suggestions about setting up a large database of photos for the first time.
I just moved all my photos to a external raid drive and upgraded to Lightroom CC.  My plan is to create one big catalog and filter it  by date (at least to start with) while I build collections as I need them. Can anyone see any problems with this approach, or recommend a better way?
    Many thanks,
    Patrick

Thanks elie-d, another excellent point. I have several LR 3 catalogs that are focused on a specific subset of images, and have upgraded a few of them. However this is the first time I've had all my images in one place, which is why I was looking for a new approach.

  • First Time MacBook Pro Owner - Questions

    Hi everyone...
I'll first say that this is my first Apple machine and my first laptop, so I'm entering new territory...that being said, my apologies if some of my questions seem silly.
    1) In a general sense, are laptops any more fragile (for lack a better word) than desktop machines? I ask only because with laptops having batteries and other different components when compared to desktops, I am curious as to whether or not there are certain precautions I need to take with my MacBook Pro.
    2) Along the same lines as 1), how should I handle my laptop when not in use? Should I put it to sleep every time? When should I put it to sleep as opposed to shutting it down? With my PC desktop, I'd just leave it running for days on end and I never encountered any problems with it.
    3) I tend to leave my laptop plugged in to the AC power adaptor while in use...will this cause any problems in any way? I've heard that the MacBook Pro has a built-in feature where it will not "overcharge" the battery, but I wanted to make sure leaving it plugged in all the time will not damage it or the battery.
Also, if you all have any general maintenance or usage tips for me given my utter lack of knowledge about Macs and laptops in general, I'd appreciate it! I plan on making my recent investment in my MacBook Pro last as long as I can!
    Thanks!

    PhiPsi JB:
First, welcome to Apple Discussions and congratulations on your new MacBook Pro (MBP). I bought one last November and I have been very happy with it. I agree with Templeton but I some other suggestions as well.
Since portable computers can be moved around, it's much easier for them to be damaged than a desktop Mac. As I'm sure you already know, your new computer will get all your attention and the older ones don't get as much use. So, I'm sure you will be using your MBP a lot and it will collect your most recent and precious data.
If you drop your MBP (God forbid!) then you will want to have a backup of your data so you can easily recover after it's repaired. My suggestion is to use a program like SuperDuper! (don't let the name fool you) to backup your system drive to an external hard drive. In my case, I partitioned my external drive with the first partition being a complete copy of my MBP's original system drive configured for my network. Then if I have any future problems, I can reboot back to the original OSX to troubleshoot any problems.
The second partition of the external hard drive has multiple images of my system drive after any updates. That way if, for some reason, an Apple update doesn't work, I can revert my system drive back to how it was prior to the update. Of course, I always do a backup prior to doing ANY updates. That's just good sense.
If you can afford it, purchase Applecare to protect your investment. It's expensive up front but if you ever need it then it will be cheap insurance.
If I'm not using my MBP for a while, I like put it in its case. It not only protects the unit but also keeps it clean. The thin aluminum case is prone to dents so by keeping it in its case, it will stay looking like new. I don't know if you have a glossy or matte screen finish but be sure to get the proper cleaner to clean your screen with. If you don't then whenever you clean your screen you could scratch it.
Finally, purchase a cover for the area where the heel of your hands rest on the MBP case on either side of the mouse pad. Others have reported that over time, stains and pits have appeared on the case which, I believe, was reported to be caused by sweat. I bought a plastic cover for that area in an Apple store and it helps keep my MBP looking clean.
Enjoy your MBP and I hope you never have any problems.

Some kernel updates (I386 on my case), and my first question is: "How do I update this? Is it safe to be the first thing to be done?" Is it only copy to the Run directory (usr\sap\<SID>\SYS\exe\run)?
Also a component BC-FES-IGS has some updates, but I don't know what is this and how to update. (it says: Installation for SAP IGS integrated in SAP Kernel igsexe_16-10003071.sar)
All the rest (SAPK* files), seems to be normal patches that is possible to use spam to update them. Correct?
How to use SPAM/SAINT? What is used in one time, and on others? Do they do the same?

    Hi Pedro,
Some kernel updates (I386 on my case), and my first question is: "How do I update this? Is it safe to be the first thing to be done?" Is it only copy to the Run directory (usr\sap\<SID>\SYS\exe\run)?
As SolMan is a dual stack machine, you can use JSPM to update the kernel. Another way is to extract the Kernel SAR files into the exe\run directory. It is a best practice to update the kernel before the support packages. Take a backup of the existing exe directories before you update the kernel and also pay good attention while downloading the kernel. you need to take care while choosing the correct version of the kernel (either 32 bit or 64 bit and ITANIUM or XEON). If you choose the wrong kernel, then ur SAP system will not come up.
Also a component BC-FES-IGS has some updates, but I don't know what is this and how to update. (it says: Installation for SAP IGS integrated in SAP Kernel igsexe_16-10003071.sar)
Extract the IGS SAR also along with teh kernel files.
All the rest (SAPK* files), seems to be normal patches that is possible to use spam to update them. Correct?
Yes!!! You may have to update the latest SPAM/SAINT (SAPKD700*) before updating the SP's.
How to use SPAM/SAINT? What is used in one time, and on others? Do they do the same?
Support Packs can be updated using SPAM and the add-on upgrades has to be done using SAINT.

  • First time computer builder - simple question(I think)

Im putting together my first computer so far without much problem
    This is hardware I have
    380W Antec Power
    865 neo2 board
    2.8 p4 processor
    2x512 mb corsair memory
    lite on cd-rw
    plextor dvd-rw
200gb western digital special additon hard drive.
(which came with ata ultra controller card)
    My question is this:
How should I set up my two optical drives and the hard drive on my available ide connections. Of course I have the two regular ide ports 1&2 and I have the ide3 next to the serial ata ports. I also have the ata ultra controller card plugged into one of the pci ports which gives me two more ide ports. I ve read through the forum listings and have not came across a simple description of how I should configure my hard drive and optical drives. How should I hook up these drives and what settings should I use (master/slave). Any help would be appreciated If it seems like I'm asking dumb questions it's just because I'm real new at this and want every thing to be perfects. thanks

    IMHO
I would take out ata controller card. Your MB has enough....
Primary IDE - master  - your WD harddrive
Primary or Secondary IDE - slave - you lite on cd-rw
    Secondary IDE - master - plextor dvd-rw
If you will install XP + service pack 1 your harddrive should be OK.
PS - Just finish to build  about the same config....
    But I made my dvd-rw - external
added later AFAIK Your 3rd IDE will not support optical drives.
It is possible to put bootable harddrive on third IDE, but I it is not very simple
    and have no big advantages

  • First time upgrading, a few questions..

I'm an existing Verizon customer with the original Droid I got when it first released and looking to get the iPhone 4S when it releases.
I plan on pre-ordering it tomorrow on the 7th. I'm not gonna wait until 3:00 EST, but will do so in a reasonable morning hour.
    A few questions:
1.) My contract ends sometime in November (Whenever the Droid 1 came out). I am still grandfathered into the unlimited data plan, correct?
2.) When upgrading to a new phone, are there other fees I should be expecting? (Just so I can get the pre-rage out of the way.)
3.) When I pre-order from the website, I am pre-ordering through delivery, correct? I can't have it put on hold for me at my local Verizon/Apple/Best Buy/etc.?
    Thanks in advance.

Your data plan should not change.  That's what I was told.
2.) When upgrading to a new phone, are there other fees I should be expecting? (Just so I can get the pre-rage out of the way.)
No, just the cost of the phone.
3.) When I pre-order from the website, I am pre-ordering through delivery, correct? I can't have it put on hold for me at my local Verizon/Apple/Best Buy/etc.?
Apple's website specifically says the phones will be delivered.  Can't really find any specific language on Verizon's site, but I think they also will ship the phone directly to you.
    Thanks in advance.

  • This is my first time to ask a question, but my iPod touch 4G is not letting me restore and my i have taken it to the apple store and THEY could restore it but then after it shuts off and I can't restore it. Can anyone help me?

Hi, umm so anyways my ipod is about 2 years old now and i think the reason why it started to malfunction in the first place was because i had too much stuff on my ipod, apps, movies, and junk. But now i took it to the apple store and they were able to restore my ipod but when i go home it goes bad again and i try ot restore it on my laptop and it says it can't restore it. (11) and another thing is that when i try to turn my ipod on, it turns on to the apple logo then all of a sudden theres suppose to be the unlock screen but instead a black screen with a tiny loading sign in the middle and it keeps buffering and it never turns on. and then it shuts off with a white screen and then does the same exact thing for like 10 minutes. please help me. I dont know what to do. and my dad will be very ****** if it cant be helped..D:

  • First Time User, have some questions...,

I've recently obtained mainstage and I'm very interested in using it. I have a weaker computer, but I wouldn't be pushing it real hard I don't think...,
    My questions are:
-Is there a way I can map drum loops to a keyboard (either my computer keyboard or midi/usb one) so I can change them on the fly?
-Similar to above, could I map voice mods to a button?
-I'm interested in looping, much like Imogen Heap or Zoe Keating. Is there a way in software to do this? I can sing/play something and it will record and play it repeatedly until I stop it with a button push.
    Thanks in advance

The program you want is Ableton Live. It is made to do what you are looking for. You might (and I mean "might") be able to achieve something similar with Mainstage but not without compromise. Ableton Live is the standard for live recording and looping.

  • First Time MAC user - OS questions.....

Im awaiting the arrival of my first ever Mac system - a Macbook Pro 13.
As far as Im aware it comes with Snow Leopard OSX.
Since I come from a PC/Windows background, whenever I purchased a system in the past my first job was to always reinstall the OS, so I could create my own partitions, and to clean out any of the manufacturer installed rubbish I dont need! The latter was the main reason for re-installation.
Will my MacBook come with bloatware installed - or is it a clean OS install to begin with??
Would it be worth reinstalling the OS?
Also, if I reinstall the OS, will I need to install all drivers etc - just like on a Windows machine? If so, does the MAC have anything similar to the 'Device Manager' in Windows, so I can see my hardware and which drivers need installing, etc?
Thanks in advance for any response.

Hi and congratulations on your new 'best friend'
The OSX that is on your new MBP is OSX Snow Leopard version 10.6.3
And it does not contain any bloatware as with most of the Windows PCs you can buy.
Apart from the OSX itself you get the 2009 full version of Apple iLife suite plus a 30-day trial version of Apple iWork suite (which can easily be deleted if ou don't like it).
    Nothing else on it.
While others round here might do a complete reinstall of OSX on a new Mac, I myself have never done that and have no problems with my Mac.
Device Drivers are part of OSX and updates to them are released as system updates from Apple with their own installer program.
In OSX there is a 'System Profiler' application, which lists all devices of your Mac plus the full software environment.
May I suggest to have a look here for beginners

  • Trying to redeem iTunes card told first time purchase on computer needs security question answered which I did not set up or know the answer to

Trying to redeem iTunes card. Was told first time purchase needs security questions answered and don't remeber setting them up to start with and I have made several purchases before without answering questions. Getting no help from Apple support. How can I make new answers for new security questions.

If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then the steps half-way down this page give you a reset link on your account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5312
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps half-way down the HT5312 link above to add a rescue email address for potential future use

  • First Time Router User Questions

This is my very first time owning and using a router, so I have a few questions I'd like to ask.
    1. Can my router be plugged (with the lights flashing) at all times, or does it have to be un-plugged when not in use?  (For fear of it overheating).
    2. If I stay connected to a wireless port from my router at all times (on any given computer), does it eat up my bandwidth even if I am not surfing the internet?
Thank you if you reply to these somewhat silly questions. XD

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

For a first time router owner your questions are perfectly normal. You dont have to turn off anything and the post about security is good advice. If your primary concern is bandwidth then you don' t want all your neighbors eating it up. As far as your LAN or Local Area Network you can leave that on as well with no bandwith issues. (Though with wireless you make run into some connectivity issues) Try not to confuse LAN with WAN. LAN = your network, WAN is you ISP a.k.a your bandwidth. Finally your WEP key (which is what I'm assuming you have to enter every time you disconnect) you can just leave that in and don't click on "disconnect" or you will be entering it everytime

    Connection Mode:  Online
Get to Local Path:  Click the … button and navigate to your Data folder.  Select Make New Folder under Data and give the folder a unique name to help you identify the files as for the Support KB in RoboHelp.
    9.    Click OK when you have configured source control.  A copy of the database is now being downloaded to the path you specified.  This may take up to 20 minutes.
You can verify that installation is proceeding either by watching your local path fill with files or keeping an eye on the CPU usage of the RSO3MiddleTierService and RoboHelpHTML files under Task Manager.
    10.  Once transfer is complete, highlight Tier1KB.xpj and click Open.  It may take several minutes to open the project the first time.  It is typical for the snippet file to check out the first time you open the project and the first time each day that you save all project files.
    11.  Once the project is open, set Version Control properties:
    a.         Select Tools > Options.
    b.         On the Version Control tab, select all options.  This will prompt the user on each version control action they take.
    12.  Test a check out/check in to validate correct installation and source control operation.

  • First time build check, with some questions

After much back & forth, I’m about to take the plunge and do my own build.  It seems similar to many others here have done, and is pretty close to the VideoGuys DIY build, but it’s my first time and I do have a few questions, so I thought I’d post and get comments.  Here are my specs:

I plan on overclocking using the ASUS auto overclock feature.  From what I’ve read 4.3 seems to be a reliable speed to shoot for.  The videos I’ve watched on the auto overclocking with the UEFI interface look straightforward.
I’m going to use the 670 to power 2 editing monitors via DVI, and an ASUS P24A6 via HDMI as a client monitor.
For the foreseeable future, I’ll be editing AVCHD footage.  Don’t do much motion gfx work, mainly cuts & dissolves, with a fair amount of color correction & grading applied.  How does this system look to do with this configuration with this workflow?
Also, any feedback on cooling appreciated.  It looks like the Noctura has some compatibility issues with this board fully populated with Crucial RAM, so I’m going with the Intel liquid cooler, which looks easy to install and was recommended by ADK.  With this case and this cooler, will I be good or is there any other type of cooling I should add to cool the RAM or the PSU?
Anything else I’m missing?  Thanks much to all who post here.  Special thanks to ADK, their participation here is invaluable and the advice they gave me was much appreciated.  Were this system my main source of income, I’d buy from them for sure.

    Stu,
Looks like you have done a lot of work for this to be your first pass here as a build list; there is a lot more that looks right than wrong.
Regarding how is this system for your workflow? This PC would certainly do what you want it to do.
Regarding cooling, RAM and PSU will be fine.
Regarding is anything missing, yes a Blu-ray burner.
You did not state whether you want to A) build this and leave it alone for years, or B) make some upgrades in the future. If B), I only have a suggestion for your RAM choice. If A), I do have some suggested tweaks to how you spend your budget for this build.
You've heard it here before, but it is so true that Adobe has mastered the ability to tax just about all of your PC components (cpu, RAM, bus, drives, and video card) with Premiere Pro CS5 and above in order to make HD editing fast and fun. This makes balance important and in some ways a system is only as strong as its weakest link.
Your current plans strike me as:
    CPU = A+, RAM = A+++ on paper, but possibly a bad idea, Drives = B-, GPU = A-.
My only strong suggestion is to go for 32GB of 1600 RAM. You want to do a moderately strong OC on the CPU and the memory controller of the 3930k is not strong enough to pull this off.
Minor suggestions: A) more drives - go for at least one 2x1TB RAID 0 array for media, projects, and scratch (adding one more drive). B) SSD for boot - for spending as much as you are here, I think your build deserves a 128GB SSD for the boot/OS drive - no this will not help after Premiere Pro has started and you are editing, but it will make the PC faster for lots of other things that most users do.

    Jim
