First Time Mac Owner  (Advice/Upgrade Options)

Hey guys,
I am a first time Mac owner, and I am very excited about ridding my self of MS and all their bloatware. I ordered the MBP 15" base model early last week, and I have a few questions about upgrades. Being the base model, it has the 250gb 5,400rpm hard drive and only 2gb of ram. I would like to upgrade to 4gb of ram and a 7,200 rpm hard drive (links posted below). As my money unfortunately doesn't grow on tree's, I will likely have to update one, then the other at a later date. I bring this up, as I have considered waiting on a cheaper SSD's.
*I guess my question, is where will I see the biggest performance improvement?*
I think I am a fairly typical user, though I like to get the most I can out of a system. I teach at a local university, and a big part of my time with the system will be creating lesson plans, presentations, and spreadsheets. I will also do some basic photo and video editing, starting with the programs supplied in iLife. In my free time I hope to enjoy some basic gaming, mostly RTS games and WoW.
I know this post is getting too long, but in addition to which hardware upgrade would give me the most bang for the buck, *what does everyone think about iWork?* As summer is and all of my grading is completed, I think I will have the time to learn a new program along with the new operating system.
Thanks for your thoughts,
Troy

Do the RAM first. A 250GB hard drive is a lot of storage for the stuff you do. You sound more likely to need more memory for more programs running at the same time, and that means RAM.
what does everyone think about iWork?
If you are not a Microsoft Office power user, then iWork can be pretty great, actually. If you use the obscure features of Word and Excel, iWork will seem underpowered.

  • First time Mac owner

Is there a recommended book or site that I can use to learn how to use Leopard and Safari? I have a MacBook Pro and need some guidance to properly use my new laptop.

[David Pogue: Mac OS X Leopard: The Missing Manual|http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596529529/index.html], available in print or digital format. It includes a chapter on Safari.

  • I have a MacBook Pro running 10.7.2.  I am trying to import photos from my older Canon EOS-1D for the first time since my OS upgrade.  iPhoto does not see the camera nor does Image Capture.  IC says there is not a camera connected.  Cable is known good.

If neither iPhoto not IC can seethe card it might suggest an issue with the card or the ports on the camera/mac.
Try reformat the card, change the ports and/or use a USB Card Reader.

  • First time Mac buyer, 2.93GHz or 3.06GHz??

So I’m a first time Mac buyer, well soon will be and my question is this. Will I notice that much of a difference between the 2.93GHz NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 256MB and 3.06GHz NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512MB configurations? I went to my local Apple store but they didn’t have both models on display, just the 2.93 one, which I really loved. I don’t plan on doing any major video editing, heck I don’t even currently own a camcorder but in the future I’d like to get one and do my own home videos. But for the time being all I use my current computer for is music, photos, web browsing, etc. On my current computer despite having Photoshop I almost never use it because of how slow it is, so that is probably the closest thing to any type of editing I do. I also watch a lot of video on my current one as well, like the HD trailers on apple.com and YouTube a lot. The current computer I have can’t handle 1080p at all but is ok with 720p, but I’ve seen that even the 2.93 iMac handles it perfectly. I guess my main concern is that I don’t want to go with the 2.93 iMac and then in a few months time feel like I made the wrong choice, but I also don’t really feel that I “need” all the power that comes with the 3.06 GHz model either. Any suggestions?

As a user sitting at the computer you are unlikely to notice any difference. (The avid 3D gamer might but then why is the avid 3D gamer sitting at a Mac?) Where you would notice it is in the speed with which the gamer renders a 3D graphic or prepares a video DVD for burning. Even so, the difference would be measured mostly in minutes, at best 10s of minutes for what would likely be an all day or overnight job.
You are incorrect. Preparing a video for DVD has nothing to do with graphics. That would be all CPU crunching, and you are not going to notice any difference between 2.93 and 3.06, except for maybe a few seconds, not minutes. The difference in graphics options might have a difference in frame rate of games, but not obvious in video playback.
Here are the numbers: 3.06 GHz first, then 2.93 GHz
Photoshop: 39 seconds vs. 41 seconds.
Cinema 4D Render: 41 seconds vs 43 seconds
Compressor MPEG Encode: 1:25 vs 1:27
iMovie HD Aged Effect: 37 seconds vs 38 seconds
Quake 4 Frame Rate: 85.6 frames per second vs 81.7 frames per second
Call of Duty 4 Frame Rate: 73.7 frames per second vs 66.4 frames per second (the winner of that test was the iMac (2008) 2.8 GHz model at 78.3 frames per second with the ATI 2600 HD graphics
So most of the tests have a difference of 2 seconds. Even the graphics frame rates were less than a 10 frame per second difference, and one test was outdone by last year's iMac 24". So you are better off saving the money because a 2 second difference isn't worth it or even noticable.

Actually you need to quit Safari which is different from closing.  With Safari open go the menu bar for Safari/Quit Safari.

I'am a first time mac user, can any explain to me how to transfer file i.e. iTunes ,pictures, other files.

Select a file you want to transfer and drag it to the desired destination.
If you need help with the basics of OS X you can:
Select Mac Help (or Help Center) from the Finder's Help menu and enter a search keyword. For your question you might search for "copy," "file copy," or "drag and drop" for example.
    See Apple - Support - Mac 101
Visit the Apple website where you will find additional information and tutorials on how to use OS X.

It says 'To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it.'
However I only have one account. I've tried to sign out and in several times. But it doesn't work. I do remember changing my password recently. Secondly I'd like to add that I got this macbook air 3 days ago. I'm a first time mac user. It had three updates initially. Mountain lion 10.8.2, iphoto and the imovie. I updated the mountain lion, thinking I'd get the iphoto and imovie done later. However now this problem has come up. Thanks for responding. Hoping to hear from you soon again regarding this.

  • I have a 3g. Recently I synched for the first time. I also upgraded the software to 4.2.1 The sync took my photos and music off my phone. The photos worked fine. The music has disappeared. It looks like my iphone itunes isn't functioning at all

I have a 3g. I synched my phone and computer itunes for the first time this week ( I also upgraded my phone itunes software to 4.1.2 ). Now I have no music on my phone, and my computer has seemed to lose the music that was uploaded (It was there for a bit, now gone). I think I should undo the software upgrade. How do I do that?

not a reply but not sure how to add something to my own thread! It seems that Desktop was damaged too as when I try to open it a screen says there is no application selected to open Desktop with. No idea what I should choose! Any help appreciated, have really made a mess of my MacBook this time.

  • W510 First time RAM Installation advice

Howdy everyone! Now, I've had my Thinkpad W510 for many years now. Got it from the college I went to. However, it's two gigs worth of ram just isn't cutting it anymore with gaming and whatnot and I've decided to add more to it. I've tirelessly looked over the internet and this website and I...just can't understand what I need to do. I'm only getting 8 gigs of ram (two 4 gigs). I know there's four ram slots, but which ones do I put them in? What do I do with the 2 gig that is already in there? Do I put it in another slot? This is my first time doing this sort of thing and I just want to make sure I do it right. (also because I highly doubt any warranty I had, if I ever had any, is still there). Finally, I want to double check if the ram im buying is compatible with the laptop.

And that's a Quad, so it will support four slots

EDIT: May have found some. Would these work? http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/thinkpad-w510-series/CT5311304
That should work, my own W510 was picky with DDR3-12800 modules and would not take a pair or Corsair and a pair of Hynix. So I ended up putting 4x 4GB DDR3-10600.
But I read other users had no problems at all. So just make sure the seller accepts returns just in case.

So, my understanding of what I need to do is just take off the first cover on the bottom of the laptop and just put the two ram's there? I don't have to put them in like, say, one on the bottom and one behind the keyboard like I've been hearing about?
I expect you will find one slot on the bottom and one under the KB, your W510 is not second hand, right?

  • First time Blackberry owner.

Me and my fience just bought the 8330 from sprint. First time for both of us owning a BB. Figured this would be the best place to learn trick for the BB or getting questions answered. The only really question I have is what gig card will the BB support? I would really like to get a 16 gig card but I have heard mixed things some have told me that it will work and others said that it has not been tested.

thanks started looking around on here and found out that my phone will support a 16 gig.

  • First Time MAC user - OS questions.....

Im awaiting the arrival of my first ever Mac system - a Macbook Pro 13.
As far as Im aware it comes with Snow Leopard OSX.
Since I come from a PC/Windows background, whenever I purchased a system in the past my first job was to always reinstall the OS, so I could create my own partitions, and to clean out any of the manufacturer installed rubbish I dont need! The latter was the main reason for re-installation.
Will my MacBook come with bloatware installed - or is it a clean OS install to begin with??
Would it be worth reinstalling the OS?
Also, if I reinstall the OS, will I need to install all drivers etc - just like on a Windows machine? If so, does the MAC have anything similar to the 'Device Manager' in Windows, so I can see my hardware and which drivers need installing, etc?
Thanks in advance for any response.

Hi and congratulations on your new 'best friend'
The OSX that is on your new MBP is OSX Snow Leopard version 10.6.3
And it does not contain any bloatware as with most of the Windows PCs you can buy.
Apart from the OSX itself you get the 2009 full version of Apple iLife suite plus a 30-day trial version of Apple iWork suite (which can easily be deleted if ou don't like it).
    Nothing else on it.
While others round here might do a complete reinstall of OSX on a new Mac, I myself have never done that and have no problems with my Mac.
Device Drivers are part of OSX and updates to them are released as system updates from Apple with their own installer program.
In OSX there is a 'System Profiler' application, which lists all devices of your Mac plus the full software environment.
May I suggest to have a look here for beginners
