First time syncing to iTunes

Just hooked up a brand new iPod Nano 8G. iTunes automatically downloaded 3 songs to the iPod that I cannot get rid of. They show in my library as gray so I can't click on them and press Delete as advised by the Help pages. Any ideas? It's very irritating!!

Hello aetnas888,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you wish to delete the songs as you are trying to do so now, you must have the iPod set up to "Manually manage music and videos" by enabling this option from under your iPod's Summary tab in iTunes. Otherwise, the music will be grayed out as it is now.
To learn how to delete content from your iPod if you have it set up to automatically sync with your library, see this Apple support document.

please help....This is my first time syncing to itunes and it it asking me to allow access, please respond on your ipad.  this is my problem becuase my display not showing up so i cannot respond.
the only thing i can think of that happened was when there was a software update a few days and thats it.
Anyone know how i can get this resolved please and thank you.

Try this before trying to sync. Press and hold both the home and power buttons 10-15 seconds till the Apple logo appears. Release both buttons. Wait 15-20 seconds till your iPad starts on it's own.

  • HT1296 i have an ipad with many application, will the first time sync erase all the data?

i have an ipad with many application installed on it, will the first time sync with itunes erase all the installed applications on the device?

The iCloud settings for the computer and other devices are in the iCloud preferences in System Preferences. If you open iTunes with your iPhone connected to the computer, select the iPhone under Devices in iTunes' sidebar, then click on the Info tab in iTunes' main window. Look at the various items you see listed. Be sure to check the Mail component for your GMail account because it is not an iCloud mail account. Your Calendar and Contacts components should state that they are being synced by iCloud.

How do I sync my new ipad mini with my old ipad 2, without losing any apps or data in notes?  I need step by step instructions for first-time sync with ipad mini.  Thanks.

If you synced it many times, you have to have a backup. It's just a question of how old that backup is now. When did you last sync?
First of all launch iTunes on your computer and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices. Do you see any backups for you iPad in that window? If so, how new is the newest backup? That will be the backup that you will want to use. But remember that if you use that backup and it is one month old, you can only restore from that date back in time. Anything that you did on the iPad in the past month will not be in that backup.
Turn on the new iPad Minin and start activating OTA via WiFi. You will get to a certain point in the process where you will be given the choice to Set up as new, Restore from iCloud - or Restore from iTunes. You will want to select Restore from iTunes.
That is the short and sweet version. There are step by step instructions in this article. This applies to the mini as well as the iPad 4 or the iPad 3 for that matter.

  • Large first-time sync fills up C: drive

I just got a new 80GB video iPod for Christmas. I store a large number of ripped music files, one season of a TV series, and some photos on an external hard drive, and manage them through iTunes. The grand total for all this content was around 60GB. Long ago, I configured iTunes to use the G: drive (the external hard drive) as the location for all my content.
The first-time sync to the new iPod went fine--automatic, not manual--except that something kept filling up the C: drive. (Again, the music is actually stored on an external G: drive.) I de-installed things during the sync to free up extra GB of space. As soon as they disappeared, iTunes kept filling them up. I'm now out of hard disk space on C:, with no idea what iTunes or the iPod did to fill up this space.
If there's some cache that needs to be cleared, nothing has cleared it yet, and I have no idea where to find it (or what the consequences of clearing it will be). The process seemed smart enough to use what space was available, but no more. In other words, the sync continued, even after there was no room left on the C: drive.
I had recently updated iTunes, which for reasons unknown, blew away my music library. I had just rebuilt it before doing the sync.
The lack of space on the home PC puts me in a dangerous situation, given how fussy WIndows gets when it doesn't have spare room on the hard disk to use for updates and other operations. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Here are other specifics, for what they're worth:
    Operating system = Windows XP
iPod firmware version = 1.2 (couldn't update to 1.2.1 because of the lack of disk space)
    iTunes version = 7.0.2
External hard disk = Western Digital, mounted via USB
iTunes option, Keep iTunes Music folder organized = true
    Podcast subscriptions = none
HP desktop   Windows XP   See posting

There isn't any cache for iTunes, other than the buffer for streaming radio. What you might want to do is search your My Documents\My Music\iTunes\ folder and see if there is anything in there other than the .xml library file. I know you did a search for *.mp3 but check it anyway...there is a chance that iTunes converted the files from *.mp3 to *.m4a (AAC audio)

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include clicking here and picking a method for your country, and filling out and submitting this form.

First time buying on itunes and i forgot the answers to my secrete questions, any help

If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then you can try going to https://appleid.apple.com/ and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account. Then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you might see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.
If you don't have a rescue email address then see if the instructions on this user tip helps : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4551

  • HT201412 First time sync with PC fail

I have tried to sync my new Ipad with my PC and it wont do it. It says it needs a system restore and when I click that to do it, it says restore fail. Its showing a picture of a USB cable with an arrow pointing upwards to an itunes symbol as if to say I need to connect. But when I do it wont connect with itunes. I have disabled my security and reinstalled itunes and still nothing. I have only had it about 7 weeks and this is the first time I have plugged it into my PC. Any thoughts please'

Thanks, I have tried that a number of times and it brings up errors -1, 14 and one other, cant remember what that was, it just wont do it. I have been using it overseas with a NZ sim card in it and have taken that out to see if that made a difference, just wont recover. Bit of a worry. Any other thoughts

  • First time sync/backing up taking LONG time..

I have a 3.1 iPhone, which I have never synced with my computer. It sounds silly, i know, but it's because i only use it for work email and games for my kids. We don't use it for music, etc. so i really have never had a reason to sync it.
Well, this past xmas, we got an ipad so i'm trying to sync my iphone so i can get to itunes the paid games so that I can also get them on my ipad. I'm understanding now that i don't really need to do that to get paid apps to my ipad device, because it should recognize my itunes id and know that already.
So...i'm still trying to sync my iphone for the very first time anyway so i can get the latest version of 4.2 and the backup is taking a VERY long time. Last night it was 15 hours and it was only 3/4 a way through. So, now I am following this helpful discussion link:
    http://blog.jhong.org/2008/08/does-your-iphone-take-forever-to.html
but the backup seems to still be taking a long time. Are pictures potentially a problem? When the picture scanner came on asking me where to save pictures, I canceled out, so i'm assuming that pictures aren't even being backed up. Should i expect that first time i'm backing up/syncing is going to take a really really long time like i'm experiencing.
And for anyone who has tried the advice in the above link, have they experienced continued delay in backing up, which the link was supposed to help alleviate?
Sorry, if this is confusing but any help would be appreciated.

The camera roll does back up to the backup file though it is HIGHLY recommended that you take them off on regular basic. the camera roll is meant as a temp location like any digital camera. If you want photos on your phone you sync them back to their own albums thus iTunes doesn't have to back them up because it knows they are on your computer already that you should be backing up yourself.
The more pics, the longer the backup as the iOS and the camera roll are sort of separate.
You can click the X next to where it says backing up and it will stop and move on to next step of taking stuff off and syncing.

  • First time syncing my iPhone six plus to iTunes a number of albums and songs do not play

After syncing my iPhone six plus to iTunes (11.4.0.18) a number of my playlists show up on the phone but they have no songs. If i look for the album it shows the album with all the songs but they are greyed out and cannot be played.
On the original sync I chose the "Entire music library" option. I have since tried to manually select each song and sync with no success.
    HELP !!!

You can erase all content on the iPhone by going to settings>general>erase all content and settings
If you do not want to lose all the data on your iPhone you'll have to manually delete the stuff off the iPhone you don't want.
Go into the summary page of your phone in iTunes and untick the syncing options etc.
If you no longer have the iPod and don't want any of the content from it you can delete the backup from your computer and it will forget you ever had it

  • First time connecting to Itunes saying cannot be used required software not

Just acquired ITouch 8GB, when first turning on after charging only shows the Itunes picture and the cord, after downloading Itunes 7.7 and connecting Ipod error message, This Ipod cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the Itunes installer to remove them install Itunes again. I have tried everything I have seen online to correct this. I have removed the Itunes software and anything that has to do with it and reinstalled over 5 times and still nothing. I have no clue what to do. Help please!!! Also I am fairly computer illiterate

I finally had success!!  I saw in another forum a post where the person had the same problem and removed QuickTime and then iTunes, restarted, and then re-installed iTunes.  This person said it worked.  So, I took it a step more and did this:
    1-Uninstalled QuickTime
    2-Uninstalled Apple Moble Device Manager
    3-Uninstalled Apple Software Update Manager
    4-Uninstalled iTunes
    5-Restarted Computer
    6-Installed iTunes
    7-Restarted Computer
After that, all is well.  You might not need to do all that, but that is what worked for me on my Windows 8 machine after the last iTunes update.
