First time using time machine

a question... if I stop the first time I was connecting to my new Time Capsule... I was doing it using my wireless connection and I decided to stop it and connected directly using a cable...then I started again but it seams not to work as it is continuing to do it and its been over 12 hours.
How can I do it right?
Gracias
Ruben

You could turn off your TC and Mac and restart both.
Make sure you have run Software Update are connected to TC via Ethernet cable for first, full backup.
Then, under the clock icon at top of screen, choose Back Up Now. This should start first, full backup.

  • Set Date & Time Using Time Zone

    Hello everyone,
Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have.
I would like to be able to change the time using the time zones - i.e. when I open date & time and select the time zone I’m in, I want the time to change to reflect where I am. Currently, when I change the time zone, there is no change to the time.
Do you have any suggestions how to get the computer to recognize the change in time zone?
    Thanks.

I should add that if I select the box to set date and time automatically, the computer displays a time completely unrelated to the time zone I've selected - this time does not change depending on the time zone selected.

  • I started a timer using TIMER class but I can't stop it even if I using

stop() command . What can I do?

you have to call timer.cancel() on your timer object.
    eg:
    timer = new Timer();
    timer.schedule(new MyTimeTask(),0,1000);
and when u want to stop it:
    timer.cancel();
    Hope this works!

  • Restoring my MacBook pro to a previous time using Time Machine

Hi I accidentally deleted some files from my MacBook pro but I used a seperate clean up software to delete them so I'm not sure where the orinal files where so I thought I'd just restore the whole HD.  I have backups on my time machine external hard drive, but when I try to restore the whole HD to a time  before the delete it says that I don't have all the permissions to restore and replace my HD. I am the administrator and should has permission to do anything. I've tried changing all the folders to read and write but the same message appears. Can anyone help please.

Apple doesn't make it obvious how to do that, unfortunately.

  • Restoring entire computer to prior Time using time

I have found lots of info on how to recover a specific file from the past, but what if i just want to revert my whole mbp to its state from yesterday 3pm? For example, if i hated what a software update did and i just want to go back in time ?

    Butterflie14,
The term "delta" doesn't really apply to Time Machine backups. Each backup is a complete "snapshot" of the entire installation. In order to do this without copying over huge amounts of data, Time Machine uses "multi-linked" files in the various backups, all pointing to the same data. That is, with the exception of any new/changed files; these represent the only real data that is transferred during each backup. Only in this sense does "delta" apply.
Restoring from a backup, at least in the context of "going back to a previous state," is an all-or-nothing proposition. That doesn't mean it has to take a long time. First, the process of erasing a drive takes mere seconds. Second, a Time Machine "Restore" doesn't include a new installation of OS X from the installer disk (which would take a long time), but rather a restoration of the entire system from the backup. As such, it is dependent entirely on the speed of the drive and connecting bus (FW 400, 800, USB, etc.). In the case of my FW 800 drive, a complete "Restore" of a 50 GB system took about 30 minutes.
I agree, to take this step seems like a waste just to recover from some "pernicious" action of a particular application. If you were a bit more specific about what application we're talking about, and just what it did, perhaps I could offer better advice. You can restore anything that has been backed up by Time Machine, but may have been deleted from your internal disk in the meantime, but you cannot really "un-modify" OS X, if that is what has happened. To do so, you must perform a complete "Restore."

  • Does anyone know how to add time using TIME function?

    Hi,
I just switched from Excel (lol) and found an error in a key calculation i use. Does anyone know how to automatically add hours to a time? i.e. i have to convert Pacific Time to other U.S. Time Zones so in the past I used this formula in Excel (=B6+TIME(3,0,0)) which is now not working in Numbers. Is there an equivalent?
    Thanks for your help!

  • Data rate slows over time: Using Time Capsule (4th) and AirPort Express (1st)

Time Capsule using Airport Express to extend network.
Over 3-4 days my data rate gradually gets slower and slower until I have to reboot both TC and AE.
Fresh reboot gets me 10Mbs or better for a while and then slows over time to 2Mbs or less.
I can cable directly to the ISP modem, taking TC and AE out of the equation, and its smokin fast
No hair left to pull out, so any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Channel:  149 (Automatic), 11 (Automatic)
Allow this network to be extended is checked
    Radio Mode:  Automatic

    Transmit Power:  100%

    Wireless Security:  WPA2
    Channel:  11 (Automatic)
Mac Address Access Control: Not Enabled

You have your wireless channels on auto.. it is usually better to control it.
You will notice I have different names for 2.4ghz and 5ghz.. then I can force the link to either band.
After you set Radio Channel selection to Manual,, click edit. You can then set the channels.
Lock the channels.. ie you take control and you set what the wireless channels will be.. when you extend wireless this works far better. The auto channel system has to run on the Extender.. but since the main base is fixed on the 2.4ghz so it will be also.. the only channel that can flap around is 5ghz (extender) since that is not under my control. Of course it is up to you to determine which channel works best.. I strongly recommend the upper channels for 2.4ghz and the lower channels for 5ghz.
So.. I have set 5ghz to 48 on the main base.. and the auto channel sets it to 149 in the extender.
One strange thing results from my setup .. (amongst many!!)
You cannot name the wireless for 5ghz in the extender.. so in my case the upstairs wireless extender has both 2.4ghz and 5ghz named TC24ghz.. nought that I can do about it. But it is not a big deal.
You can see the result in the wireless diagnostics. The last wireless I have put in the box.. it is named TC24ghz but is in fact running on 5ghz. That is just how the over automated system of the apple routers work.. If I could I would fix it.. and maybe shall via serial console at a later date.

  • Extremely long log on time using Time Capsule and Airport

i'm really confused as to why when I start up my macbook, connecting wirelessly via time capsule and airport that it takes an extremely long time to log in and the internet connection seems unusually slow. is there a setting that's off? when i log on at work to a different router and wireless connection it starts up right away. any advice appreciated.

    1. no idea.
    2. I get the same issue. Set the brightness at a certain low level - and most often when i performa a full restart of the computer - the brightness is usually at full blast.... I've had this happen for about 5 months now and have never bothered to call in about it - if it hasn't been fixed yet - I'll just deal with it as it only takes a second to correct... but yes - annoying....
    3. Same as you - and this is the funny thing...... Mine used to start pulsing immediately when the lid was closed. IT changed for me in the last 2 months or so. That - and also - when performing a shutdown of the computer - it just get a grey sinning circle on the middle of the screen for about 10 or 15 seconds..... very similar to the wait for the pulsing light....
I reinstall OSX every month or so for various testing purposes - and I usually just put all the updates on immediately. next time - i will run the vanilla OSX that came with my re-install cd and check out condition 3 to see if it is an update that has caused that delay.
    So - you're not alone/

  • Just got ext HD and want to use Time Machine; questions first

I finally purchased an ext. HD with enough capacity to actually start using TM. My question is, the main reason for getting it was to back up media, mainly videos and such, things that I'd have quick access to. So, my question is, is okay to partition the drive? And if so, about how much should I allot to it? The drive is an Iomega ego and is 320GB. My iMac is a 250 GB HD with only about 100 GB's used.
Also, when I first plugged in the Iomega, it automatically took me to a Time Machine screen asking me if I wanted to use this drive for TM. I guess it's formatted for mac right out of the box. Should I click yes on this? Will it allow me to format after the fact? OR, do I need to hit "cancel" and then go into Disk Utility and set up my partition?
Many thanks. I know this is probably pretty rudimentary, but it's my first time using Time Machine.

Yes it's OK to partition a backup drive in order to use part of it for storage and the other part for TM backups. But your external drive is not large enough for both. A TM backup volume should be at least twice the capacity of the drive it backs up. In your case that means the TM volume should be at least 500 GBs to back up a 250 GB drive (it's really less important how much space is currently used then how much space could eventually be used.)
If I were you I would get a second larger external drive for TM backups. Or adopt a different backup strategy that does not involve using TM such as a simple cloned backup that you update periodically with backup software. This would only require a 250 GB volume on your external drive leaving about 70 GBs of a storage partition.
For backups you could use one of the following:
    Backup Software Recommendations
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. Tri-Backup (Commercial)

  • If i use time machine on lion 10.7, can i put all my info back on mavericks from the time machine i did on lion ?

Hi everyone, its my first time using time machine, i want to change from lion to mavericks, but i want to know how that actually works, and if i back up my stuff from lion would it match and would mavericks know what am trying to do here !?.... like i want to have all the sime that i do on my lion OSX but On Mavericks OSX

If you are going to install Mavericks on your existing Mac then you don't need to use Time Machine.  It's good to have a Time Machine backup but when you install Mavericks all of your personal files/documents are left intact and are unaffected.  Only the operating system files and updated applications are modified on your system.
You may want to consider keeping your Lion backup and setting up the Mavericks backup on a new external hard drive.

  • HT201250 i am using for first time the time machine and an external hard drive because I want to erase my macbook and start from zero files. do i keep my files in the portable hard disk when I connect it again with the macbook or the time machine will era

i am using for first time the time machine and an external hard drive because I want to erase my macbook and start from zero files. Am i keeping my files in the portable hard disk when I will connect it again with the macbook or the time machine will erase all?
I would like to know if after I erase all my data, empy hard drive inside the macbook, the time machine will erase all my files that I have saved in my "WD "My passport" external hard drive

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine has to erase the external disk in order to make backups. Before setting Time Machine up, copy the files of your external disk to the hard disk of the Mac in order not to lose them, and then, set up Time Machine. The first backup will start automatically.

Buy an external drive 320G or larger (much larger is preferable). I do not recommend you use TM for this, instead download a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner and make a clone of your drive. Once this is done you have 2 choices, you can download and install Lion on your internal drive just as you planned or download and install Lion to the external clone, the 2nd method allows you to test the Lion install before committing to it. If the clone with Lion is to your liking then just clone it back to the internal.

  • Time Machine: Repeated errors when backing up for the first time using a new external firewire drive

My Iomega 500GB firewire external drive failed on me last week and I have just replaced it with an identical model. I used to use the old drive with Time Machine on my MacBook Pro running 10.5.8 with no issues, until the drive had a hardware failure and stopped spinning up, hence the replacement.
Two days ago I tried using Time Machine for the first time with the replacement external drive. The backup failed and each subsequent backup attempt has failed since then with a different error each time. The drive cannot be ejected using Finder (Finder says disk is in use and cannot be ejected even when no processes are running except for Finder and Time Machine has been disabled), by dragging it to the dock (hangs computer which can only be fixed by a hard reboot), in Disk Utilities (drive cannot be unmounted) or in Terminal ("no such file or directory").
The first backup attempt failed after 3 hours of "preparing" with the message "The backup was not performed because an error occured while creating backup directory".
I tried repairing the disk in Disk Utilities and Disk Utilities said the drive was OK ("the volume Time Machine Backups appears to be OK"). I tried ejecting the drive (hard reboot of computer and disconnecting the drive), plugging it back in again and trying again.
This time it started backing up, then failed after a few minutes with the message "an error occured while copying files to the backup volume". I had a look at the troubleshooting suggested on http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/C3.html and followed instructions. It failed again, so I did a full reset as per http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/A4.html.
It failed again, so I tried reparing the drive again in Disk Utilities and again it said it was OK. I tried using different cables and ports (Firewire 400 instead of Firewire 800), and backups still fail.
I have turned off anti-virus scanning (Sophos). I have tried excluding it from Spotlight but this causes an error message from Spotlight. I have tried trashing the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file and rebooting. I have tried selecting deselecting the drive as the back up in Time Machine preferences, selecting "None", then "Stop Backing Up" then quitting preferences, rebooting, disconnecting the drive, reconnecting the drive and selecting the drive again as the backup disk in Time Machine preferences. I have tried erasing the drive completely, rebooting, and trying to back up again.
None of these have worked. This is a brand new drive and I do not want to have to replace it again if I do not have to.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.

    Hello, some possible clues...
Should you click “Start New Backup”? Not yet! If you see the dialog above, your existing Time Machine backup is corrupt, and you might not be able to recover data from it. But you can save a copy of the corrupt bundle and, perhaps, extract some data from it if needed.
Ask yourself if Time Machine has saved data you might need before deciding what to do next:
If you are sure you won’t need anything backed up before today, click “Start New Backup” and let Time Machine do its thing.
Otherwise, click “Back Up Later” and save a copy before letting Time Machine start a new backup. Just look for a file called “computername.sparsebundle” (for network backups) or “Backups.backupdb” (for local ones) and create a copy with a different name. You can open sparsebundle files with DiskImageMounter and browse them like any other disk. More information is available here.
There you go. If you click “Start New Backup” when you see this dialog box, Time Machine will erase all of your old backup data and start a new bundle. It won’t be corrupt, but it will be empty.
Note that you can manually initiate a Time Machine backup integrity check by option-clicking the “Time Machine” icon in the menu bar and selecting “Verify Backups.”
    http://blog.fosketts.net/2010/08/11/time-machine-completed-verification-backups- improve-reliability-time-machine-create-backup/
According to This Time Machine resource   “This appears only on Snow Leopard, and started with the Time Capsule Backup Update 1.0 in mid-May of 2010.  It also seems to have been included in the 10.6.3 v1.1 update and 10.6.4.”
So, what can you do about it?  Grin and bear it, it seems, until Apple fixes it.
One thing you can do to make the backup take less time is to connect your machine to your Time Capsule or other backup drive via Ethernet for the duration of the initial backup.
