First Try OC i7 920 D0 with X58 Pro-E

I picked up a smoking deal on CL for a slightly used i7 920 IBUYPOWER rig with 22" 1080 monitor for a cool $1000. It was already OC'd to 3.2, but got wiped when I did a bios update yesterday.
So i jumped in and had to crash course OC'ing with the aid from some great articles I found here on the forum.
Especially the discussions here https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=128637.0
and here https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=134941.0
I followed along the some of the steps listed above and increased all the way up to 3.8-3.9 ghz stable. http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1234817
Anything above that im not to comfortable with (yet).
Idle Load
Settings:
BCLK 181 @ 21
Vcore +.030 aprx 1.256
Mem Voltage:1.60
Mem Ratio: 4
Mem Freq: 1448
Uncore Ratio: 10
Uncore Freq: 3620
Tips from article: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=128637.0
My questions are how to get the mem up closer to the 1600 from 1448? If i increase the Mem Ratio to 5 then it bumps to 1880! Im not to sure how to increase further without increasing the BCLK further. Im stuck on this point.
Other concerns is the IOH: 80c at idle and 85c under load.
Please post any thoughts on my first attempt....Cheers!

Rather than try to mess with bclk to get 1600 on the RAM, 1448 is so close, I doubt 152 more would add a FPS. Your best gain would be trying to tighten the timings some. Maybe try 8 8 8 21 60 tRFC 1N @ between 1.62-1.65V's.
Really? You can do that even if they are 9-9-9-24 chips?

Unless you want to tear the board apart to change the TIM on the IOH heatsink, I doubt your current IOH temp will ever be an issue unless it goes above 95C tControl on a continual basis at full load. An Antec Spot Cool works well.
Whew that's good to know, i really don't want to tear into it. I saw the references to the Spot Cool, will have to pick one up.

For your Uncore Ratio, I would pair it up with the Mem. Ratio at 4/8 rather than 4/10.
Awesome will give it a go. Thanks!

Hello. Starting about 1 month ago I've been experiencing this issue. I can be just cruising the internet watching youtube video and listening to music then the computer will freeze and this loud screeching sound would come out of my headphones (and scare the crap out of me). This issue never occurred while I was playing any PC games until recently.
Yesterday I was fed up with the issue so I pulled open the case and cleaned every fan out (which I do every couple of weeks). Now the issue seems to be occurring while playing video games or listening to music. All the fans appear to be functioning properly and I don't believe it could be heat related because I have the Antec 1200 case which has 6 case fans. I've run PC Wizard 2009 and SystemFAN while playing some games and none of the temperatures I saw look too extreme.
So I'm suspecting it could be the RAM, soundcard, PSU, or motherboard but could use some more assistance before I start RMAing it.

I'd be inclined to blame the Creative drivers for your sound card first. Try updating (or if necessary, downgrade) the drivers and see if it makes any difference.
I actually pulled out the sound card an hour or so ago and removed the drivers. I'm running on onboard audio and the system just randomly restarted while I was talking to people on Ventrilo.

  • Overclocking I7 920 DO and X58 Pro mobo

Hello guys would be very greatfull if someone could please help me. I have just purchased the I7 920 DO and an X58 pro mobo and im a noob at overclocking the only overclocking ive ever done was with basic programs ie Ntune.Ive read hundreds of forums and im still none the wiser my head is spinning.I would like to no if anyone could give me a list of were everything should be ie base clock and so on. Im not after a big overclock between 3.2 and 3.6 would be ok for now ive read on some forums you can leave everything as it is for about 3.4ghz and just increase the base clock is this true it also states this in this months pc format magazine.Ive checked with everset and my idle cpu temp is between 27 and 34, core 1 is 46, core 2 is 44, core 3 is 47, core 4 is 42, i havent checked these on full load, also in the oc program that came with the mobo everything keeps changing the cpu speed goes from 1.6ghz up to 2.9ghz this is also the case with everest and the oc program alarm on the system 3 fan keeps going off even though there is no fan installed in that socket and it reads 0 any advice and suggestions would be greatfull thanx.

The fluctuation you see in speed, is the power saving features in the system. Not to worry, that is normal. Make sure 'Spread Spectrum' is disabled. In 'Advance Bios Features' 'CPU Features', disable all except 'Hyper Threading'. Change 'Mem. Ratio' to 4, 'Uncore Ratio' to 8, 'Advance DRAM Config,' set 1N 9 9 9 24, change base clock to 166, disable 'Extreme Mem. Profile', leave other settings 'default' or 'Auto', & check for post. That should get you around 3.33 & mem. around 1333.
I'm a little curious on your memory modules. What voltage do the they say they run at? If not 1.5v-1.65v, they are the wrong modules for your system. Most i7 X58 RAM is also triple channel 3X2G sets at a max. of 1.65v's.

  • Freezing up with x58 Pro and G.Skill DDR3-1600 RAM

I just recently updated to BIOS version 7.1.  When I tried to use the "Extreme Memory Profile" or XMP in order to have the mainboard recognize the RAM at it's rated speed, my system became unstable and quickly freezes after boot up.  I have G.Skill DDR3-1500 PC3-12800 (CL9-9-9-24) RAM, Core i7 920, MSI x58 Pro.  The only setting that recognizes my memory and allows my computer to run with stability is when the RAM is "underclocked" to 1333Mhz.  Any tips on how I can get the mainboard to run my memory at it's rated 1600Mhz speed without my computer crashing?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi panetrez & welcome to the forum. Welcome to the world of 'rated' but in reality slower chipped memory modules. In many tests, RAM at 1066 against RAM at 1333, or even 1600, was only around 1-2 FPS different. System performance I believe, gets it's biggest boost from CPU speed & the quality of the VGA card.
The 'sticky' on initial 1066 memory speed is correct with Eclipse & Platinum, but the X58 Pro, if 1333 or higher rated memory is installed, does set the RAM at 1333. This was proven on two recent builds I was involved with. One had 1333, & the other 1600, & both ran at 1333 at boot-up. Both of them also initiated with 6.4GT.
If you would still like to run your RAM at 1600. Start a new thread in the 'Overclocking & Modders Corner' of the forum. Some adjustments in the bios will be required.

  • I7 920 Overclocking in X58 pro-e Vcore Jump during prime 95

Good evening, I'm trying to overclock my i7 920. My default Vcore is 1.13 in BIOS, my Ram is Corsair 1600MHz and my cooler is Thermaltake ISGC-300.  I have adjusted BCLK to 160, multiplier to 20, VRAM to 1.60V and Vcore to 1.16. When I'm on windows CPU-Z reporting Vcore 1.16V, but when running prime 95 constantly jump between 1.44 and 1.52V. Also tried multiplier x21 and the reported Vcore in windows was the same(1.16), when running prime95 jump to 1.22. Why the Vcore isn't stable? Also without overclock my tRFC was 88 clocks and now is 153 clocks, how i can decrease it? I tried to pull the BCLK to 170 but the memory with ratio 5 jump around 1700MHz, how is possible to raise my clock and keep my memory in 1600MHz? Thanks in advance

    Quote
    Why the Vcore isn't stable?
Is VDroop (LLC) set to Auto or High? It will always move around as the load changes. Just try to keep the CPU V. from exceeding for that particular CPU model, 1.45v's under sustained load. Some of the X58 CPU's are limited to 1.4v's, so recommend to check the latest Intel datasheets for the latest information about that.

Set the DRAM Mode to Linked, adjust it in Advance DRAM Configuration.

You have to use bclk & Memory Ratio/Uncore Ratio settings. Obviously, bclk of 200 & a Mem. Ratio of 4 (Uncore set to 8) = 1600. If it is stable at RAM speed of 1700, why worry about it? Speed doesn't matter, the voltage applied to make it work matters more.

  • Help with Overclocking my i7 920 on X58 Pro-E

Can someone please give me some step by step instructions on how to overclock my i7 920 on my X58 Pro-e board? I have the following specs- X58 Pro-E, i7 920 co stepping, H50 hydro cooler, 6 gigs Corsair 9-9-9-24 1600, GTX460-SE 1Gig, OCZ Stealthxstream 600 watt, 1 tb Western Digital, running Vista home Premium 64 bit.
I have been able to get it to 3.6 but after that I have problems with the memory I think. But I think it should be able to do much better if the voltage and or timings were set correctly.
So if you guys can walk me through it that would be great. Thanks  John

    Dear John,
Your initial posting did not contain any information as to what you had tried to achieve in terms of Overclocking your system, neither does it indicate that you had made any attempts at trying to gather information in terms of general OC'ing for the i7/X58 platform. These are normal processes one would go through before having an expectation of someone dishing out a "magic formula" that will give you what you want in terms of an OC. OC'ing a system must start with a reason for wanting to do so. i.e. faster gaming, higher theoretical benchmarks, improved video rendering times, increased folding performance, experimentation or just plain an ego trip and being able to post a nice number somewhere.
Your reasons of wanting to do a higher OC are unknown and quite frankly have got nothing to do with us. You decided on a Sunday to do some OC'ing and it seems after some frustrating time, gave up and came to the forum. Now being a weekend, and this forum being monitored by users just like you, most forum users were probably having their Sunday BBQ and relaxing, oblivious to the fact you were out there crying for help. Some people actually do have other things to do than just sit in front of the PC to wait for someone like you.
Anyhow, come Monday, people are off to work and will probably have some spare time during or after work to see if they can be of assistance with users posing specific questions regarding their rig combinations and the exact detail of what has been done to get around the problems.
Your patience was obviously tested by that time and you start your next post with a "not so nice"  set of assumptions and statements.Quote
Well it looks like no one wants to help or can't!

Last MSI product that I will buy.
This put some questions in my mind regarding your homework in terms of your decision to acquire the combo you did. Was it a spur of the moment decision or was some research conducted in terms of the hardware selection based on comparing reviews and visiting the forums beforehand to establish if the intended hardware does actually satisfy the targeted/expected outcome.
The first thing you do is to threaten other users of MSI products that you will sell your board to buy something else.
A bit of searching on the net regarding general OC'ing would have given you enough information to establish the basics. Once those don't work out for you, then the time comes to state those and request assistance.
If you search this forum you will find hundreds of threads where the best advice in the world has been provided because the person wanting assistance has provided a bit more detail than you have, with a clear indication that they actually did do some effort in terms of research.
In order to assist you, perhaps you could start anew by providing your current BIOS settings and posting screenshots of your CPU-Z memory and SPD tabs. That's always a good place to start.   You may be surprised at the amount of advice forthcoming when people can see the whole picture...

  • X58 Pro BIOS Crash during Boot

    Hi All,
I have recently assembled a system with X58 Pro board and Core i7 920. It was working fine for 3 months except that it started having BIOS crashes since last night. The issue is that the mainbaord lights would be on without the POST screen and within few seconds the system resets automatically. The same procedure happens for about 4-6 cycles and on the 7th cycle i get a message on screen saying the previous overclocking has failed and the BIOS is reset to default settings. Post then the system boots up normal and works just fine. But once the system is shut down and when the system is switched on(cold boot) I get the same problem. I have also noticed that a month back the CPU clock had jumped from default 2.66 to 2.67 automatically without any overclocking and just couple of weeks after that the clock rose up to 2.87. It has remained like that until the BIOS crash issue. All these happened without any manual overclocking.  I was wondering how can this happen automatically unless the clock speeds are adjusted manually. That was quiet strange though. Neways after this issue(BIOS Crash) popped up the clock speed is back to 2.67 than the default 2.66. Weird again. The BIOS version is the default one(V7.0) that was shipped with the mainboard. I tried to M-Flash the BIOS to V7.3(after reading couple of postings from the forum) but without success. The same problem still persists. I have done the following things after going through the forums regarding the issue.
    1. Cleared CMOS using the clear CMOS button(With power chord unplugged)
    2. Tried M-Flashing to V7.3 (Not sure whether the BIOS was updated during the process)
I kindly request all of you so provide some solutions so as to get my system back to normalcy. Your worthwhile suggestions would be really appreciated. The system config is mentioned below
    Core i7 920 @ 2.66 GHz
    MSI X 58 Pro - BIOS Version 7.0
    Corsair 6 GB(3 x 2 Gigs) DDR3 @ 1066 MHz (installed on the black slots currently)
    EVGA GeForce GTX 295 1.7 GB GDDR3
    Tagan 1100 W PSU
    2 x 1 TB Seagate Sata HDD @ 7200 RPM w 32 MB cache
    Sony Optiarc DVD-RW Drive
    Windows XP 64Bit SP2
Looking forward for some positive solutions

    Hey NovJoe,
Thanks a lot for your reply. I have done as per your suggestion and the system works fine now. Pretty interesting though. During the individual RAM tests i did not face any BIOS crashes and i thought the MOBO DIMM SLOTS would be faulty. So i installed the second RAM strip on the second slot worked fine and finally the third one and works fine too. I am really wondering wht had happened in the first place. Was that due to any dirt or dust in the memory and DIMM contacts? Well neways i am kinda relieved now. But i wanna make sure that everything works fine. What types of tests do you suggest to make sure that the system is working almost fine??
    Thanks a lots
    Regards
    Rahul

  • TRUE BLU-RAY AUDIO - X58 Pro-E very important question !

    I have a problem.
I want to buy a motherboard with X58 Pro-E and build HTPC HD Audio.
What does this mean "TRUE BLU-RAY AUDIO" ?
There is no HDMI output, only S/PDIF !!!!!
    - There is no HD audio bitstream (DTS-HD MA/TrueHD) - no HDMI !!!
    - Does not decode HD Audio -> LPCM 7.1 - no HDMI !!!
    - That decodes the HD Audio (7.1) to analog?
    - If only decodes HD from Blu-Ray Stereo (via. SPDIF)?
What does this mean "TRUE BLU-RAY AUDIO" on MSI motherboard ?
    Regards.
    HerrMan

      >> TRUE BLU-RAY AUDIO <<
    • The loss-less content protection technology with full-rate audio enjoyment from Blue-ray Disc
    • Support for 24-bit / 192kHz sample rate offers high quality digital decoders and speakers
    • support 7.1 channels playback, plus 2 channels of independent stereo sound output (multiple streaming) through the front panel stereo outputs
There is no HDMI because there is no onboard video. The video card you get would need to have HDMI output.
LPCM: Linear Pulse Code Modulation. It is an algorithm used to convert analog audio to digital. It gives pure loss less representation of the original analog audio in digital.
7.1 is the latest in speaker configuration. Mono is one speaker, stereo is two, 5.1 has 5. The problem with 5.1 is it produces angled audio. To get the best out put you have to sit in the center and all speakers have to be placed the right way. 7.1 solves those problems, even if the speakers are not perfectly aligned you still get very good results.
S/PDIF-out JSP1 on MB connects to video card for HDMI sound.

  • X58 Pro will not power on

    CPU: Intel Core i7 920
Motherboard: MSI X58 Pro LGA 1366
    Memory: OCZ 6 GB (3 x 2 GB) 240-pin DDR3 13333 (PC3 10666) SDRAM
    Video Card: nVidia 9800 GTX+ 512 MB
    PSU: Rosewill RP600V2-S-SL-S 600W
I just received all my parts today and I set everything up. I'm fairly certain that I put every power cord in the right spot. I have the CPU, heatsink and fan, three RAM modules, video card, two SATA hard drives, one SATA DVD drive, and the PSU hooked up. The LED power light on the motherboard lights up, but when i press it, nothing happens. When I press the on button on my case, nothing happens either. The fans don't start, it doesn't post - it seems completely dead.
Does this seem more like a motherboard problem, or a power supply problem? Maybe one of them was dead on arrival? Thanks in advance for you help!

Tried what you suggested - nothing.
Minus the lone green LED light on the power button on the board itself, there really is no other indication that there is any electricity. Yes, there is a power button on my power supply, and it's turned on. I can tell when the power's on, because when i have it unplugged, the LED light goes off. It's just weird that electricity is getting to the light, but no other part of the motherboard...
If i did connect something wrong, which is possible, do you have any suggestions of what it might be? My power supply has a 20 + 4 pin cable, and i connected the 4-pin on pins 12-24 (closer to the top of the motherboard) and the 20-pin closer to the SATA connectors. That's what the directions said to do. Other than that, I connected two 4-pin cables right to the left of the CPU, in order to power the CPU. Those are the only power cables that connect directly from the PSU to the motherboard.

I have added some more functionality to my report. The good thing is, the report works as it should.
BUT, I'm not really sure, whether this is a good (correct) design. The report works the following way:
    1. Read planning data form text file into internal table
    2. Display the internal table
    3. Convert the data and display the converted result
    4. Post the converted data to the system
    5. Display log with messages
The main thing is, I would like to know, do i really need two dynros, to display the two different internal tables or is it possible just to use one ALV-Grid? I was not able to find another solution. Any comment or help to the report is appreciated.

  • Help overclocking MSI X58 Pro-E with a i7 920 co stepping

Good evening everyone, I would like some help with getting the best overclock I can with my rig. This is what I have: Msi X58 Pro-E, Intel core i7 920 co stepping, Corsair Hydro H50 cooler, 3 x 2 gb Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600 c9, EVGA GTX260-216 SC 896mb, 1 TB Western Digital 32cache Hard drive SATA, Lite-on DVD/RW with Lightscribe, OCZ Stealthxstream 600 watt PSU.  Running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. Currently it says that the memory is only running at 500 mghz. I can use all the help I can get. From what I have read it should overclock fairly well.  Thanks for your help John

Using CPU-Z? If so, 500x2=1000. For a simple OC without having to do much of anything, change bclk to 166/167. Be sure to disable Spread Spectrum in bios Cell Menu. Go up from there until it fails to post. Add a step or two of CPU voltage & check for post again. At some point, RAM speed becomes a factor, & other voltages & settings join in the mix. Primarily, the main items involved are bclk, CPU & RAM voltage, QPI voltage sometimes at some point, RAM timings, Memory & Uncore Ratios. Other than that, disable Overspeed Protection, C-State, Turbo on or off, EIST on or off. Most important, know the operating temp & voltage limits.

  • Hello! I try for the first time to edit a multicam with FCPX and wether I switch angle with 1-2 or with the razor, nothing happens on the timeline. What can I solve this problem please?

Hello! I try for the first time to edit a multicam with FCPX . I did all the sync, i can easily switch images. But nothing happens in the timeline when I use the razor for editing.

… the funny thing, this article and all other profound advice been found on the net, miss to mention a very basic advice:
first of all, a MC is clip as any other !
… sounds perhaps a bit … too basic , but  - as an amateur like me, and using MCs almost any day - you should keep that in mind for your workflow.
After creating a MC, which can be done in seconds!, you get a single clip in the Events browser - and you should treat it as any other clip:
select parts of it, add it to your timeline, you can add it to secondary (for pic-in-pic for example), you can split it, shift it, nudge it, ...
aaaand you can select a diff. perspective = camera (or mic…), without losing synch.
I'm noticing, people spend way too much time in the multi-track timeline view of an MC, in hope, this gives them back those 'tracks' FCPX doesn't offer (for good reasons...)

  • Unable to boot with MSI X58 PRO-E and OCZ3P1333LV6GK

     Hi,
This is my first post in this forum.
I've had this system for about 6 months, and from time to time I kept having instant reboots and once the PC would never start, I think I've sorted that by first flashing an old MB BIOS and then the most recent.
Tree days ago I've had another instant reboot, but now the system stops/reboots when the coloured animation starts to appear above the "Loading windows" message. This happens with both Win7 32 & 64 bits and even with the windows 7 installation DVD !!!
I think I've tried all combinations of the other posts where the MB+memory was the same as mine.
Another strange issue is: the memory PN shown inside the BIOS (OCZ3G1333LV2G) is different from the label on the memory (OCZ3G1333LV6GK)!!
I've already tested with only one memory chip at a time, the result is still the same.
I've only got connected the following: Video board, 1 RAM chip, USB Keyboard & one SATA HD. No over clocking whatsoever !
What else do I need to do to finally boot to windows ?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Paulo
    My System:
        Mobo: MSI X58 Pro-E, model MS-7522, version 3.1
        BIOS: 8.B
        CPU: Intel i7 920
        RAM: OCZ3G1333LV6GK (6GB)
Video: Sapphire Vapor-X ATI RAdeon HD 4870 2GB
        PSU: Combat Power CP 750W
        OS: Windows 7 32 & 64 bits

    Hi Henry,
    Thanks for the help.
"What are your RAM timings? Screenshot of CPU-Z Memory tab and SPD tab."
I've added a few screenshots of the memory, the SPD & CPU-Z tab, plus a MEM86 test with only on memory stick installed. It appears that the memory is OK... or not ?
"Do you have another video card you can try? Those Sapphire Vapor-X cards have been a problem for others in the past."
I wasn't aware of any problems with this video card, I use it mainly to send movies to my big LCD TV through the HDMI port. I don't have access to another video card, sorry...
I don't know what else to do, do you think it's the PSU ?
