First week with FCE, a few quick questions...

Okay, I am going to try to keep this short, but I have a couple questions about FCE.
1. When I am capturing video/audio from my camera, I am using my MBPs internal hard drive, so I want to keep as much free space as I can on here. Once I'm doe with the video, and its finalized, is there a way I can just keep the rendered/compressed version on my MBP, and maybe move the project folder to my external in case I want to make changes later down the road?
1b. This may be a stupid question, but what files can be deleted if I want to erase a video i was making but no longer want (i have 2 test videos when I was learning how to use FCE) and want them gone.
2. Each and every time I make a change in the time line (like adding clips, transitions, effects, music, etc.) do I have to render it (because it keeps saying unrendered)
2b. Music I import in from my iTunes library wont play, i just get a beeping, do I have to render it?
3. If I capture a clip from my camera, and I have it in a bin in my project window, and I just want to use half of that clip and delete the rest (so it doesn't take up space) how do I go about doing so? Just set the in and out point, drag it over to my timeline, and delete the clip from the bin?
3b. My final question, if and when I delete a clip from my bin, does it permanently delete or is there another way I have to go in and delete clips.
As you can probibaly see, my main concerin is saving space and deleting clips and "thing" i dont want anymore or i am not going to use.
Thanks for your help in advance!!

2. FCE pro "accepts" many video formats, but it has trouble playing them in real time. Most video formats are highly compressed and not good for editing. For example, if you have a master frame every 24 frames, that means a cut into the middle of that such a run of frames requires FCE to render the master frame and 11 frames following to get the 12th frame of the compression sequence. FCE simply can't do this in real time. You can get around this two ways:
a) In the upper left corner of the sequence window, you click on the RT menu and select "Unlimited RT". This works sort-of. You will see skipped frames and other anomalies during playback that will not be in the final result rendered movie. This usually doesn't help for audio rendering problems though.
b) Convert your incoming video to a quicktime DV/DVCPRO file using a resolution that matches your incoming video resolution. DV/DVCPRO compresses only within a frame, rather than across multiple frame, so each frame stands on its own and is easily rendered in real time, no matter how you edit it.
2a. Again, the audio rendering issue. You will see a red bar at the top of the timeline with the iTunes music. I assume the audio clip is from a ripped CD, not the iTunes store, as iTunes store audio files are locked and can't be used. FCE wants an easily processed audio format. See page 211 of the FCE user manual. AIFF is a good choice. To convert the iTunes audio to this format, control-click on the iTune track and select "Show in Finder" from the popup menu. Drag the revealed file onto Quicktime player and then export to AIFF format.
When working with an FCE project, it is usually a good idea to make a folder to contain both the FCE file and the related media files converted from whatever their source format was. When you are done, you can back up the originals, and the FCE project file. If you ever need to rework the FCE video, you can reload the originals and reconvert them, rather than backup the large DV/DVCPRO and AIFF data files.

  • A few quick questions about publishing for iPhone/Android

I'm currently developing an iPhone/Android game in CS5 and I just have a few quick questions.  If anyone can answer even one or two I'd really appreciate it
1- I'm developing using a 320 x 480 resolution for the iphone.  When I tested it, the status bar on the top of the screen makes the edges disappear.  How should I turn off the status bar?  And if I can't what resolution should I use?
2- The performance is a little slow, and the game isn't very intense at all.  What's a good way to improve performance?
3- For Android, what should I do for the resolution?  Is there a standard resolution or do I have to have multiple resolutions for multiple devices?
4- Finally, is it worth getting the free trial of CS5.5 before I publish?  Is there anything in there that will be a huge improvement over CS5?
    All help is appreciated

    1. Publish in fullscreen
    2. Use bitmaps, cache all bitmaps, use minimized looping structure etc.

    3. Android: 480 * 800
    4. Not that much, but you have GUI updates and have a GUI publishing screen for packager for iphone too.

  • Was SOUNDTRACK bundled with FCE a few years ago?

    Hello All,
I have been buying FCE since it first came out. A few versions ago I'm almost positive that FCE came bundled with SOUNDTRACK and LIVE TYPE. Is this right?
I use Live Type a fair bit, but have only recently wanted to use Soundtrack. Soundtrack is on my hard drive but I can't seem to open it.
    Mike

    Hello Tom,
I can use Live Type on my intel iMac (my iMac is just over a year old). I'm running FCE 4.01. When I click on the Soundtrack icon a little blue/gray screen comes up that asks me for my name, organization and serial number. I put that information in but the OK button on the button is "grayed" out. It won't allow you to click it on.
I still have the iMac I originally put FCE on (17 inch flat screen). On that computer Soundtrack runs fine (not an intel). When I bought my new iMac I migrated everything over to the new computer and FCE and Live Type worked fine. I didn't try Soundtrack until the last few weeks and I just can't get it to open. Where Should I put the icon? In the FCE folder or in Applications?

  • First week with Rezound

After reading all the issues that have been posted, I thougt I would add a positive view.  After one week with my new Rezound and getting rid of stock GMail app with Google Gmail app, this phone has been super.  Great screen, above average signal, no bootloops, no crashes, email/ontacts/calendar sync with Google, mx Video and google music are great for my uses, GPS/nav/weather work great, dock mode works super (buy the dock from Amazone, phone will fit with case on it), internet is super, no 3G/4G problems.
Do not know if I am just lucky or what, but a great phone and play toy.
So if you want a good phone get this one!!!

The docking station I found on Amazon was RND Power Solutions Deluxe 2nd Battery Charger and Data

  • First 6 weeks with Mac Pro - Bunch of questions for you

I'm a new Mac convert and now after having my 1st Mac for about 6 weeks I've developed a list of questions I'd love to have some help with.
    1) How can I "minimize all" like in a PC
    2) Some programs seem to require an admin status to install. Can I do this without logging into a separate admin account? Some will ask for a name and password, but some just won't install correctly. Can I "run as admin" somehow from the start without logging out or user switching first?
    3) If I'm running a fullscreen app (i.e. game such as Age of Empires) is there a way to get to the desktop without quitting the game?
    4) Is there a quick shortcut way to get to the downloads window?
    5) Can I change my mail so that there is a delay before a message is marked "read" - right now even scrolling past it marks it read.
    6) Can I auto log in to a network drive? I have a NAS that i use for backup storage and want it available evertime I start my computer
    7) How do I control what app opens a type of file - for example for a long time until I installed the full adobe PDF program all PDF files were opening in safari and I couldn't adjust the view
    8) I have a hot swap / Firewire drive. For some reason it won't show up unless I physically unplug it and then plug it back in. Is there an "update" that will update all drives and scan for connected drives?
I appreciate any help with these questions - love my Mac and getting great work from Aperture. Have a project with Final Cut express coming up which will be my first movie project on the Mac - used Sony Vegas on the Pc in the past.

    1) How can I "minimize all" like in a PC
    There are several options
    a-Use Expose ( F9, F10, F11 & F12 keys)
b-with the program whose windows you want to minimise active, while holding the option key, click the yellow window widget. All open windows in that program will minimise to the dock.
c-while holding the option key, click on a running programs icon in the dock and choose "hide others" from the popup menu. This will hide all running programs except the one your working on.
    2) Some programs seem to require an admin status to install.
You should be able to enter your admin name & password to install anything. This will affect where some things are installed sometimes, so you can also consider turning on fast user switching, so you have quick access to each account. If all that is not doing it for you ...
You can go to the accounts panel in System Preferences and set the admin account to auto-log in, or to log into the admin account and wait for you to enter the password. If you wanted to run as admin full time, you would do better to change your user account to an admin account and then delete the original admin account. No need for two admin accounts. While it is good practice to run and admin and a user account, the vast majority of Mac users run as admin.
    3) If I'm running a fullscreen app (i.e. game such as Age of Empires) is there a way to get to the desktop without quitting the game?
Command-H will hide most running programs. Clicking on the programs icon in the dock will restore the full screen window.
    4) Is there a quick shortcut way to get to the downloads window?
I like to keep a copy of the download manager in the Finder sidebar. You can get to the download manager from any Finder window, plus you can drag & drop URL's onto the icon to download files.
With the Finder active, press Shift-Command-G, which will open the "Go to Folder" window. Download manager is in /System/Library/CoreServices, so type /System/Library/CoreServices and hit the "go" button, At the bottom of the list, is an application called Verified Download Manager. Drag it to the sidebar of the open Finder window, placing it in the section below the iDisk/Network/HD.
Be careful not to move the actual program, you just want a link to it in the sidebar.
    5) Can I change my mail so that there is a delay before a message is marked "read" - right now even scrolling past it marks it read.
Not that I've found. You might want to visit http://www.hawkwings.net/ where you'll find a lot of Mail.app tips
    6) Can I auto log in to a network drive? I have a NAS that i use for backup storage and want it available evertime I start my computer
You can, several complicated ways come to mind ... I'm going to skip over them as they probably won't work with a PC type NAS anyway. What you could do, is to mount or connect to your NAS, so it is visible in the Finder, then, open the Accounts panel in System Preferences and click on the login items tab. Click the + button to add an item and the navigate/select your NAS.
This will mount your NAS at Startup, but could cause really slow startups and all kinds of other problems if you're using a laptop, or otherwise unable to connect to the NAS at startup/login. If the NAS is always available, this should work fine.
    7) How do I control what app opens a type of file - for example for a long time until I installed the full adobe PDF program all PDF files were opening in safari and I couldn't adjust the view
Select/Click-on (highlight in the finder) any file that you want to modify, and then press Command-I
This will open a get info window for the file, where you can choose "Open with..." to select what application to open this file with, then, just below, notice the "Change All" button, which, when clicked, will change every file type like the selection to work with the chosen app in the future.
You really should consider using Preview fro PDF's unless you need Acrobat advanded features - it's nicer/faster etc.
    8) I have a hot swap / Firewire drive. For some reason it won't show up unless I physically unplug it and then plug it back in. Is there an "update" that will update all drives and scan for connected drives?
Best way to deal with this is to make an alias (aka shortcut). While the drive is mounted, highlight it in the Finder and press Command-L
You can also add it (or the alias) to the sidebar, just like the download manager.
Both options let you click to mount the drive, which is handy to allow you to unmount it when you don't need it.

  • A few quick questions about my new MP3 pla

Ok, I like to get to know anything I buy so I decided to come here and ask, I hope you dont mind answering (My MP3 player is the MuVo c00):
) In the instruction manual it says that play WMA file reduce the battery life of your player. Since converting them reduces the size by a fair bit I was wondering if the reduced battery life was worth it and how much it reduces the battery life.
    2) When is a good time to replace the bettery in my player? Should I wait for it to completly die or what because I dont want to go replacing batteries 3 quarters full.
    3) Is there any sound or quality differences between MP3 format and WMA?
    4) Is the program that came with the player the best thing to add music with or would buying something else do the trick or even just copy and paste?
    5) Finally, how do you attach the neck strap? I dont see any place where it could go unless you have to attach it with the arm band on it.
Thanks for your help and I might have some more question but untill further notice this is all I have and again thaks for your time.

. You have to bear in mind this is for an equivalent MP3 e.g. a 28 kbit/s encoded WMA is going to use more power than a 28 kbit/s MP3. Normally WMAs are encoded at a lower rate anyway, hence will use less power. There are many factors that affect battery usage.
    2. Wait for it to go flat.
    3. Complex answer. In general WMA is used when you want more space and aren't so worried about quality, at the 64 - 28 kbit/s range. MP3s (using the LAME encoder) are better at the higher bit-rates of 92 kbit/s. The bottom line is try a few different bit-rates for both MP3 and WMA, take a listen, and decide for yourself.
    4. With the MuVo it's very easy, just use Windows Explorer to copy files. I wouldn't buy any other software, unless you find something you really like to create MP3/WMA files.
    5. Not sure on this one...

  • Few quick questions..

I got my new macbook about 2days ago... Since then i'e already fully discharged and recharged twice... However on reading on here it seems that that is a bad thing to have done..
So i was just wondering if you could clear up a few concerns.
1.) is doing what i did really bad, because my understanding over the past few years was that if you didnt charge/discharge them properly that stuffed up your battery life.
2.) is it really okay to have it fully charged, plugged in, and left like that for 2days straight? (For Hypothetical sake,); can i use it all day long plugged in charged or is it bad.
3.) so if #1 is actually bad, that means it is PERFECTLY FINE to keep using it and plugging it in to charge twice a day even if i only run it down to 80% left on the charge b4 charging?
4.) Is there anything, considering i've only just recently acquired the macbook (less then 2days old) that i should kno wabout being a happy customer and how to appropriately use the macbook to make sure that im not posting in one year's time that i am an angry customer because i only get an hours battery usage out of it.
5.) What are the best ways to get 4-5hours out of a charge, and what can i realistically be doing on the macbook at that time to get that, i.e. lets say i was at uni at a lecture just using microsoft word to type notes and what not, aswell as itunes or safari going or something
6.) thankyou for reading my questions.

Yes, there is no reason to do this with li_ion batteries. You will only wear out the battery for no reason.
2.) is it really okay to have it fully charged, plugged in, and left like that for 2days straight? (For Hypothetical sake,); can i use it all day long plugged in charged or is it bad.
Yes, It is OK Once the battery is charged it sits dormant and the computer use the power only from the AC supply. The battery is not getting charged after it is full.
3.) so if #1 is actually bad, that means it is PERFECTLY FINE to keep using it and plugging it in to charge twice a day even if i only run it down to 80% left on the charge b4 charging?
It doesn't matter when you charge it. It only has to be below 95 % or the charger won't turn on.
    4.) See my lists below.

There is a link describing how to get the best life. Turn off anything you don't need and turn the screen brightness down.
6.) thankyou for reading my questions.
Your welcome. Here are things that will help you best take care of your battery.
It is OK to leave your battery hooked to the charger most of the time. The only time I unhook mine from the charger is when I calibrate. You should calibrate your battery once a month.

  • About to purchase my very first MAC computer, got a few quick ?'s...

ok I think I'm about to buy the 24" iMac... Except I have never even seen a MAC computer in my life! I have only experienced windows computers...
Anything important I need to know before my purchase?
Also is there a new designed iMac coming out soon? I saw new laptops and other things released on apple store.com
And finally this may be re dumbest question ever but where is the CD/DVD drive located? Is evrything included into the flat screen? I mean there is no tower or anything....
Please help before I screw up and drop $2000 on something I am clueless about... There is no apple store within hundreds of miles, so you are my only source....
    Thanks!

    Hello iturn,
I presume you've looked at Apple's website to get the info you have on the 24" iMac, but if not, here it is.
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/imac?mco=MTE3MDM
Click on the tabs in the included software section to see what comes with it.
All the hardware you should need is included . . . and yes the CD-DVD reader-burner super drive is located on the right side of the screen. There is no tower or anything else other than the keyboard and mouse. In that respect it's a lot like a desktop mounted laptop only much bigger.
You're choice of the 24" model is, IMHO the best choice of the available models. The screen is brilliant and is a beauty. Also, somewhere on that Apple site is a section to help people who are switching from windows, so you should look for it and check it over. And on Amazon you can find a book by David Pogue called Switching: the Missing Manual or something like that.
Yes, before you drop $2000 on a totally new computer system you definitely should research it out to see that it fits your needs. And you really ought to see one of these Macs in person and play around with it a little. It's likely to blow your mind a bit, but that's the way to see if it's the computer for you. Surely there's someone in your area that has one. If not a weekend drive to the nearest Apple store is surely worthwhile for you.
As for a possible new design coming out soon, no one here knows that, nor are we allowed to speculate here about it. Again my best advice is to find a way to get a look at one before you order it.
Hope this helps and I hope you'll join us soon with one of these gorgeous machines.

  • Going to buy an airport and have a few quick questions

I am looking to buy an airport. I want to buy it used to save a few $$.. So I was looking on ebay and saw one which said the following"
"This is the Airport Extreme Base Station, a great wireless router from Apple. It is model A1143, which is the model just before the current gigabit release. It does have the "n" speed, and comes with the owners manual, original CD disk, and the acutal base station and power supply. The only difference between this model and the current one is that the network switch speeds are 10/100 instead of the gigabit."
What does this mean that it is 10/100 not gigabit? When did apple change the model? Doe it make a difference?
Also.... I have a an airport express. That is not N speed. Does this mean that my entire network will not be "N" because of the fact that my airport does not go as fast as N?

Apple replaced the model you are looking at with the current model (that has a gigabit ethernet switch) at the end of last summer. You can read about the improvements made in layman's terms at:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/59923/2007/09/airportextreme.html
Does it make a difference? Yes, but (a) mostly if the computers you are planning to cable to it also have gigabit ethernet interfaces and (b) you do a lot of data transfer between computers on your network. If your network is mostly used for internet access and printer sharing, you won't notice any difference at all since the older model was much faster than most people's internet connection anyway.
If you set up an Airport Express with an "N" base station - yes - speeds will slow down to the "G" speed of the Airport Express.

  • First week with ipod touch and it's already busted.......

i just finished watching a movie thru the ipod touch turned it off and after 5 mins the screen went all white and wouldn't turn off or on by itself. So i reset the thing turned all black and now it won't turn on at all. It was fully charged by the way, the movie was about 45 mins long so it can't be the power. What now? i tried everything i could but nothings happening.

perfect way to start the critique.... safari does not seem to be as stable as it is on OS X... mine shut out of myspace a few times but i think it had to do with myspace in particular... it might be the requirements of the site... tinker with other sites and see if that helps

  • First week with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus

It didn't start well, but I now have a world class hand held device!  I received the phone by mail from Verizon.  The screen is unbelievable.  However, I had problems right away.  The phone overheated, signal coverage was weak, and battery life was unacceptably poor.  I called Verizon and they told me to bring the phone into a store for immediate replacement.  I went to the store and I left with a GREAT DEVICE!  The battery life is more than acceptable for a 4G phone.  The coverage has been just as wonderful as my prior phone (BB).  There are no overheating issues.   My corporate email and calendar sync perfectly.  My personal Google accounts sync perfectly as well.  I am just learning how to use this device.  I am very happy with it.

It is good to hear some good news regarding a sGnVz replacement.  Most replacements have not gone as well.  I almost had mine replaced at Best Buy, but the Geek Squad convinced me to wait until the upcoming firmware upgrade.  I'll be interested to hear if your second week will bring happiness and not another replacement.

  • A few quick questions...

I just got an iPhone yesterday (dig it, by the way) and was curious about a few things. Will there be firmware updates, and with them will we eventually see things like instant messenger service, ringtones from ipod, games etc.
    Thanks to everyone in advance.

Yes, you can be sure there will be firmware updates. You can also be sure that no one knows what will be released with these future updates. Only Apple knows. No one else around these boards. I hope your not basing your purchase in hopes of future updates to fulfill your needs from the iPhone.

  • Few quick question on openjdk

so i`ve been running arch 64 on my desktop for the longest time now. one of the things thats been buggin me is the lack of a jave browser plugin
now yesterday i came across openjdk, which i`d never heard of before.
my understanding is that it has a browser plugin? is that right? not sure if its important, but i use firefox as my main browser
the other thing i just found while searching openjdk in AUR was icedtea. which would be better exactly?
edit// forgot to ask if/how either openjdk or icedtea would conflict with open office, or azureus, or frostwire, i think they`re the only 3 apps i have that use java, other than the regular webbrowsing that requires a plugin time to time

Why don't you just look ?
pacman -Ql icedtea6 | grep plugins
Edit : anyway, you should try the arch official one that is in extra now.

  • A few quick questions before I buy Final Cut Express

I am looking into purchasing FCE because iMovie doesn't meet my needs.
I am currently using Pinnacle Studio to make music highlight videos.
A lot of what I do requires slow motion, or speeding the video up to match the music.
I also use effects like "old film" scratches and sepia tones or B&W.
Does it sound like Final Cut Express will help me????
    Thanks,
    Chuck

    Hi(Bonjour)!
FCE HD can does those effects and many more.
But you'llo have to follow a steppier learning curve than iMovie.

  • First week with Z3. Dropped it once. Cracked screen on back side across the entire length!!

This is the first all glass phone, i've had, and i was worried about it, but this "gorilla glass 3" i think it's called, was supposed to be tough. I dropped it once, from about 70cm and it cracked right down the entire length of the phone on the back side!
I don't think Sony's warranty will cover this!!!

Sorry to hear that, but I don't think Sony will cover it, just contact your local Sony Xperia Care
