Fiscal Year Crossover Time design vs. Generic Time design

Hi all,
does any one know the differences between these two? And where are time design strategies documented.

MK

MK,
I've never heard of "Genetic Time design". Google only returns your post -- see, you're famous. :)
Do you mean the difference between a Time dimension that contains years, months, weeks, days, etc. versus (crossover?) versus two or more dimensions (genetic?) to capture years and months? (Really, it could be any combination, decades and years, decades, years, and quarters, etc., etc.)
I've never seen any formal documentation that says one is better than the other, or really any documentation whatsoever re design considerations. In BSO databases, it's always been a question of balancing ease of calculation (usually) in a single Time dimension versus block size -- that often forces a split into two (or even more) dimensions to handle time. There, I guess that was a design consideration after all.
When Hyperion put together Planning, they split the Year and Period dimensions, for whatever that is worth.
In an ASO cube, block size is irrelevant/doesn't exist. Take a look at the pretty cool Intelligent Time (I think that's the right name) wizard that comes with an ASO cube -- that sucker can go right down to seconds with all kinds of built in intelligence. Those single Time dimensions are way bigger than any BSO cube could hope to hold.
From a reporting side year over year reports (qtr1 this year versus qtr1 last year) require dimension nesting -- this is generally not a big deal, but can be somewhat bothersome when many other dimensions are part of an asymmetric column selection.
Single time dimensions are way easier in calcs when doing something like a 13 month rolling average -- not having to write IF blocks to handle jumps across years is nice.
Lastly, unless you decide to go with a duplicate name database, you will have to come up with a naming convention that guarantees uniqueness in a single time dimension.
I'm sure others will (maybe they will) jump in with comments of their own -- if there's a section in the DBAG that explains which one to use I've forgotten it. <--This is entirely likely but I have to get up early for a flight so I'm not checking. :)

Cameron Lackpour
P.S. One other thought -- if you must have a single time dimension with multiple years, quarters, months, and weeks, and you have to do it in a BSO cube, you're going to end up making Time sparse, with all kinds of calculation implications (slowness, chiefly). So there's another design consideration.

    1) Conversion can be done at any time during the year but before 31.12.07.
    2) say we have done the conversion in June 07 , here the depreciation is already calculated for april and may.07. so when we run the june 07 the depreciation will be calculated on prorata basis till june 07.
    3) whenever we wish to take the trial balance , we will get the ytd TB from april 07 . meaning if we take the trial balance in november 06 , we will get YTD TB from april 2007 till november 2007.
    4) as at 31.3.07 we will close the year end as usual, start the new fiscal year also as usual, meaning without changing the fiscal year to shortened fiscal year

    And also my reports should also be able to drill through and needs comparison years(Prev Year Vs Current Year), months(Prev Year Vs Current Year) and Qtrs(Prev Year Vs Current Year).
    How can i achieve this using BSO?.

  • Fiscal Year Time Dimension - Month Time Span

    I have a need to create a fiscal year time dimension and I created using Time Wizard in OWB. When I was developing BI Reports, I found some inconsistencies in Time dimension as it was showing figures in all the months of my first quarter of new financial year that Apr 2009 – Mar 2010. On close inspection of Time Dimension table I found that fiscal_month_time_span value varies from 35 to 28 to 29 for different months. i.e. it’s not matching with corresponding Calendar month. This means I am unable to plot data correctly using fiscal year dimension.
    Maybe this is how it works in Oracle, but this does not solve my problem. Could anyone give me some solution for this ? My Fiscal year is from ‘1- Apr – 09’ to ’31-Mar-10’. In my reports I would like to see transactions for April month when I use month attribute of time dimension like it happens in Calendar time dimension.

    May be someone from

  • Record 1 :Time conversion from 0CALDAY to 0FISCPER (fiscal year A1 ) failed

    Get red error when loading Delta data and the red error is:
    Record 1 :Time conversion from 0CALDAY to 0FISCPER (fiscal year A1 ) failed with value 20060426
    We went to RSA1 -> Source Systems page, right click on the source system, choose Transfer Global Settings, check "Fiscal year variants" and check "Rebuild tables" and then run it twice, but still not helpful that we always get the above red error!
    Any idea?
    Thanks

    hi Anurag,
    You are right that run OB29 on BW, find there is no any period entry for variant A1.  Since all the variant should come from R3 by run "Global Transfer Settings" on the source system, I run OB29 on R3 and find the same thing that there is no any period entry for fiscal year variant A1.  I will go ahead to ask R3 people to correct it on R3, then conduct the "Global Transfer Settings".
    Thanks

  • How to cumulate key figure for whole fiscal year with one time variable?

    Hello everybody!
    I have a problem creating a query that allows to get cumulated key figure for <b>whole fiscal year</b> (FY), when I actualy type <b>only last period</b> for the FY.
    The query itself is very simple:
    - I have "Organization" characteristic in "Rows" section
    - I have one key figure "Number of invoices" in "Columns"
    - I have "Fiscal year variant" 0FISCVARNT defined in "Filter" that has 12 periods within Fiscal year
    and then
    - in section "Free Characteristics" I have "Fiscal year/period" 0FISCPER.
    I want to be able to provide ONE single value when run query, which is last period of a FY (like 012/2003), but then in report see cummulated number of invoices for WHOLE fiscal year.
    Will appreciate any help!

  • Last Year MTD/YTD Column Without Using Time Series Function

    I need to calculate MTD and YTD of last year without using time series function.
    My requirement is like:
    We are working on Fiscal year.
    Suppose user will select a date: 15-Jan-2013

    Use a period table with Period Ago attributes and join these to an alias of your fact table. In other words, use a period table (let's say Day is grain) that would have
    WAgo, QAgo, YAgo, (etc.) attributes for each day. Join this table to aliases of the fact tables on these columns.
    Thanks.

  • When I edit a song in itunes (i.e change the year) on purchased songs, the next time I return to itunes, the information has reverted back to the original information. How can I change that?

    When I edit a song in itunes (i.e change the year) on purchased songs, the next time I return to itunes, the information has reverted back to the original information. How can I change that?
    When I purchase ITunes music, and it is a song from a Greatest Hits album, the Year of the song shows the year the CD was released and not the year the song was released (i.e. a song may be from 1986, but the Greatest Hits album was released in 1999, so my songs in ITunes show 1999).    So, I go into each of those songs and change it to the year that I want to be displayed. As long as I don't exit out of ITunes, it will show the year that I changed it to (i.e. the 1986 year in this case). But if I exit out of ITunes and then return to ITunes, the year reverts back to 1999. The same happens if I change the genre of a song from, say 'Pop' to 'Alternative', it will revert back the next time I log in.
    Oddly enough, as soon as I right-click on that song to change it back, the year/genre that I had entered returns.
    How can I make it so my changes are permanently displayed as I want them?  This is pretty annoying when I try to find a song on my Ipod under a certain genre, but it doesn't appear in that genre because the incorrect information gets synched to the Ipod.

    Make sure that these two options in Edit > Preferences > Store are turned off:
    Then exit iTunes and open it up again.  Your metadata entries should then be persistent - with these options checked iTunes will be comparing what you have with the information held in the iTunes Store, and will overwrite with the latter for Store purchases (and if you have iTunes Match).  If you have any iOS devices you should also turn off Show All Music under Settings > Music.

  • How convert date/time from xml in xdp(Designer)?

    Hi, i want to convert date/time format from xml in Designer, date/time value in xml is NOT in common format YYYY-MM-DD (if is in a common format i can do this with pattern)
    I have a "DateTime" Field in Xdp can get from Xml date and time:
    In XML <DateTime>DD-MM-YYYY</DateTime> i want to convert in XDP in DateTime Field in "DD-April-YYYY"
    Can i do this?

    You can do this way..
    Bind the date field to your XML tag.
    Set the display pattern for the date field.
    In the initialize event of the date field place the following code.
    Set JavaScript as language.
    var dtStr = this.rawValue;
    var pos1=dtStr.indexOf("-");
    var pos2=dtStr.indexOf("-",pos1+1);
    var strMonth=dtStr.substring(0,pos1);
    var strDay=dtStr.substring(pos1+1,pos2);
    var strYear=dtStr.substring(pos2+1);
    //Assign the formatted value to the Date field.
    this.rawValue = strYear + "-" + strMonth + "-" + strDay;

    Dear,
    What is the reporting period that you have given in this report, try to give 01.01.2009-31.12.2009 if it is a calendar year or as per your fiscal year give the period.

  • Fiscal Year Period - Query Designer - Characteristics Value

    Hi Experts,
    In query designer, characteristics value for 0FISCPER by default shows value of fiscal year variant V9. But for Fiscal year variant V9, 002.2014 is November 2013.
    Now user want to display the correct period and its description (002.2014 is February 2014) which implies need to use different variant. Please let me how this can be changed.

    Hi Suresh,
    Try this
    Path: Financial Accounting >> Financial Accounting Global settings >> Fiscal Year >> maintain Fiscal year variant (maintain shortened fiscal year)
    Transaction Code: OB29

  • Designing a 'sample time feed' for Spry XML Data Set

    Hi!
    Often when I call a Spry XML Data Set I find I can't get the
    schema. If offers you the option to design a sample time feed but
    doesn't give you enough info to be able to even guess how to do
    this.
    Is the answer in modifying that php line somehow?
    Any guidance would be much appreciated!
    Mike

    The idea for Design Time XML is that you can use a static XML
    file instead of a dynamic source, in case you don't have access to
    the real data. You can use the Design Time XML to make the query
    and design the page.
    This gives you access to the data references for designing
    the page.
    If you are getting schema errors, the numbers that the dialog
    shows is the line number and character number (1,1)
    You should be able to see the XML directly in the browser. If
    you can, then DW should be able to consume it.
