Fitting text properly in frame

Hello all,
I am having trouble getting text to fit correctly into a text box fit into a specific width column and I was wondering if there are options for overriding the automatic flow of text from line to line without resorting to changing spacing between specific letters/words.
There is space to fit the word "sustainable" on one line but indesign pushes it to the next. The word fits when I add letters to the word, making it longer (and obviously able to fit in the frame), but not when I add a space before the word. I'd like to force the word "sustainable" to fit on the top line.
Suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

What you are seeing is one of InDesign's best features, the Pragraph Composer, at work. Just becasue a word WILL fit doesn't mean putting it on a particular line is going to give the best overall balance to a paragraph. The Paragraph Composer looks at the entire paragraph and breaks lines in such a way as to create the best overall spacing for what the paragraph contains.
You might be able to force the word up by using a non-breaking space in front of it instead of a regular space.

  • Automatically reduce overset text in a frame?

    I am working with variable data, which pulls text from a spreadsheet. I know I can fit text to a frame, but I don't want to fill the frame. I need the text to start at a specific size, and then if it doesn't fit, reduce the size of the font. I am merging data, so when I print, the document should compose longer email address, or company names, smaller than the intended 10pt. typesize.
    We own a license for XMPie, but it really slow, not to mention expensive to upgrade (again) now that we've moved to Creative Cloud. There must be a way using a plugin, or writing some script. We produce thousands of mailing pieces for schools and non-profits, and I want to steer the company towards an Adobe workflow. We have access to the entire CC suite, so maybe InDesign isn't the solution.

    I think my article may have been taken to imply that the solution fills the frame. That is not the case.
    The article does imply trying to fill a name badge, but the principle can work for what you are trying to do. The change to the character style doesn't have to be purely to the character height or width, but can change the point size of the type as well as its leading. Re-read the article but more importantly the user comments underneath the article and the solution for instances where there are lots of letters, rather than typing ....... over and over again, use the ^.{x,} where x represents the amount of letters to change.

  • Fitting text to frame.

    Hi, from what I read, there is no real option to auto fit text to text frame like you can do for an image so looking for a work around.  We load a lot of data from xml files into pre-built assets through Apple Scripts so want to try to avoid having designer go in and manually fix the exceptions that don't fit.  I've been trying to use a paragraph style's justification options to do and it seems do a little of what we need but seems to only do if no spaces in text like 123456789012345678901234567890  then it will squeeze it on one line but if 1234567890 1234567890 1234567890, it will not.  Not sure if this is the best way or not.  Here is what I have in my paragraph style

    The last thing you want to do is scale your text horizontally or vertically to fit copy to a page. I'd only ever do this for text that needs some sort of special effect look or something. I think it's pretty bad for anyone to use scaling to fit copy to a page to bring back two lines.
    What you can do is look at the leading, perhaps reduce it by .25pts or something for the page.
    Or select all the text and reduce the space between the letters http://www.adobe.com/education/webtech/CS2/unit_planning1/idb2_leadkrntrak.htm
    But you don't want to overdo it, or the text will look all squashed up and unreadable.
    I usually go for about -5pt, but no more than that.
    I'm sure others would have their methods too, but scaling or squishing text using horizontal or vertical scaling just distorts the shape of the letters.
    Ultimately you don't want to change anything and perhaps look at other elements on the page that you could alter to bring back the two lines.

  • Shortcut for Fit text on Box?

    Hi guys,
    Is there any way or shortcut for Illustrator CS 5 to Fit Texts as the same lenght of the Box Frame? This is a image sample
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1PwekCEGe3qN6mrq24V3UHC86svK8
    i have a shortcut in InDesign to do this and it is very useful when aligning differente text frames. If the frame does not fit its text content the alignment is not right. I know i can do it by hand, but when you have many blocks is way time consuming.
    Any help or ideas?
    Cheers,
    S

    On the other hand, it is nice the script adjust to the text frame but i guess it would be nicer if the fit would adjust to the right lenght of the text.
    "Length" should be avoided when describing dimensions. It can be interpreted as either horizontal or vertical. Use "height" and "width", not length. Better still, explicitly state horzontal or vertical.
    What would be nicer is for Adobe to take a look at its other vector drawing program (FreeHand) and discover a far superior interface for text objects. Then trash Illustrator's entirely ill-conceived, cumbersome, unintuitive, and limited "Area Type" vs. "Point Type" distinction.
    Enable the user to set any text object to auto-expand and auto-fit its contents either horizontally or vertically. FreeHand users have been able to do this to any text object with a mere double-click for decades. This can also be set to all the text objects in the document at once--a huge advantage for avoiding accidental overset text in map projects where hundreds of street labels are subject to the risk.
    InDesign needs this almost as badly.

    Reason why Justin's code does not work for other days is date format mask DAY returns day blank padded to 9 characters which is the longest day name which, yes you guessed right, is WEDNESDAY. You either need to blank pad or use format modifier FM:

  • Can't figure out how to add bars to reformat 16:9 video to fit a 4:3 frame

    Hi all, I'm a long-time user of iMovie 5, and a professional Avid video editor. On my home computer, however, I have some serious issues using the "dumbed down" version of iMovie '08 which, unfortunately, it seems I must use if I want to avoid purchasing new software, and don't feel like trucking my personal work to the office.
    Usability issues aside, I'm at a total loss as to how to reformat my imported video clips. At the moment I have a .dv file which is exported from FCP in a 16:9 format. I want to take this into iMovie '08, format it to fit a 4:3 window, add it to a bunch of other clips, and export a finished 4:3 movie to then put on DVD.
    Importing is fine, editing is meh but works (sorry, I'm a snob), and exporting works fine, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to put a reformat on the video. The goal is to have black bars on the top and bottom of the video image, squeezing the anamorphic 16:9 video down so that people don't look vertically stretched in a 4:3 window.
    What I do NOT want to do is crop out any of the video footage. The goal is to keep all of the video, and just add the black to the top and bottom in order to make it look, well, normal. For the life of me, I can't figure it out. it looks like this would be something that the Crop / Fit tool does, but that won't let me extend the fit outside of the frame of the video, nor will it let me put a 16:9 fit inside of the 4:3 viewing window (I only have a 4:3 option when in 4:3 mode, and only have a 16:9 option when in 16:9 mode).
    Thank you very much for your insight.
    PS: Just as an aside, why on earth did apple move iMovie '08 away from timeline-based editing? The old iMovie versions were quite powerful editing suites in their own right - even with limited video and audio layers. The '08 version seems to just hate users who want to do anything remotely close to frame-specific edits.

    I guess I've got to add the flags back in somehow? The weird thing is that the movie is the correct aspect ratio in iTunes and Quicktime, just not iMovie '08.
    iTunes, QT Player, and previous versions of iMovie all relied on the "Current Display Size" setting to set the aspect ratio. (I.e., you can modify this setting and change the aspect ratio by merely changing the display size in QT Pro and re-saving the file for these apps.) Unfortunate, iMovie '08 looks for the flag for the main display/export, and, if Apple hasn't changed things, uses the "current display size" to set the aspect ratio of the thumbnails... Weird.
    How would I add those flags back in? Can I just open in quicktime and save a new copy? Or am I going to have to contact the original source of the material and have him export it again (with different settings? And what settings would those be? He's coming from FCP).
    If the content is of exceptional quality, you could try re-exporting it in MPEG Streamclip using the "Export to DV..." option. This will re-flag the file with the aspect ratio you select in the export window. Also, be advised that performing destructive edits in iMovie '08 that forces the data to be re-written to new containers will lose the flag in the process unless Apple has made some recent changes to avoid this.

  • Can't resize column to fit text

    Can't resize column to fit text in numbers.  option is "grayed-out" no matter what I do

    It is either a glitch or a rather unfun new thing. No one knows for sure. You do have a bit more control if you go into your photos app, find your photo and tap on the little box with the arrow poking out of it. That allows you to send it to be wallpaper. You can do some scaling, although not as much as you used to.
    Finding work arounds is about all you can do until it's fixed.

  • Illustrator CS6 - Fit Text to Shape

    I am trying to fit text to a shape without warping the text (i.e. not using envelope warp). The shape is a simple rectangle with a rounded top and I just want the top of the text to form around that curve, leaving the bottom and sides as is. I know this is a very simple task in Illustrator but for some reason I'm not getting it and the envelope warp is doing just that - warping all of the text. What am I missing?

    SMB,
    The other non distorting automatic way is Area Type. You may select Align Center in the Paragraph palette, then click the top of the path with the Area Type Tool and start writing (with the right settings in the Character palette).
    If you need the topmost line/part of type to be warped, that is another matter.

  • Fitting text to new margins

    In indesign CS3...when you change the margins in the master and apply the changes to the document...how do you automatically change the text frame to fit the new margins? I can do it manually, but my document is 590 pages long.
    Thanks,
    Jana

    Gee cool, thanks.
    Wish there was some video or book specifically for creating books in indesign
    Perhaps I might bother you for one more question if you are up for it.
    I needed to put more gutter space on the inside of the pages as the book is so big...
    is there any publishing difference between putting more space on the inside margin itself or on the gutter, or simply more on both?

    myDocument.Close
    intRow = intRow + 1
    Loop
    objExcel.Quit
    WScript.Quit

    Hi Robert,
    Your problem starts here:
    Set DepthMarker = myDocument.Textframes.Item
    ...which item? Item takes either an integer (the index of the item) or a string (the contents of the label property, if any).
    Next, however, is that you should be more specific about *where* the text frame is in the document. What page or spread is it on? Let's say that the frame "DepthMarker" is on page 1:
    Set DepthMarker = myDocument.Pages.Item(1).TextFrames.Item(1)
    If there's only one frame on that page, you're in great shape. If not, you need to come up with some way to differentiate one frame from another. Script labels are a great way to do this. Let's say you've used the Script Label panel to add the label "DepthMarker" to the relevant frame on page 1, and added the label "WarningText" to another frame. In that case, you'd use something like this:
    Set DepthMarker = myDocument.Pages.Item(1).TextFrames.Item("DepthMarker")(0)
    Set WarningText = myDocument.Pages.Item(1).TextFrames.Item("WarningText")(0)
    ...When you use a string to refer to a page item by its label, InDesign returns an array, so you need to get the first item in the array (assuming that there's only one page item on the page with that label).
    Hope this makes sense! I'm typing it off the top of my head because I have to go speak at a conference tomorrow and am short on time--but it should get you pointed in the right direction.
    Thanks,
    Ole

  • Expanding text fields to fit text

    I have a customer who would like to be able to put large amounts of text into a text field and have it all print. The amount of text can vary, so he would like to have a box where he can enter the text and have the box size adjust to the amount of text entered, even to the point of adding extra pages if necessary. I have tried using the Expand to Fit option, but all that seems to do it allow the text to scroll while the box stays the same size. Is this something that is even possible? If so, how? Thanks.

    Hi there,
    Usually the "Expand to Fit" option under the Height property of the object is what you need.
    You also would have to make sure that your text field is "Allow Multiple Lines" & Field Format set to "Rich Text"
    Parents objects (subforms & page) are "Allow Page Breaks Within Content" and the Content set to "Flowed"
    And once those settings are set make sure that your text field is Expand to Fit on the Height property!
    Hope this help!

  • How to fit text layer to extents of comp with scripting?

    Hi There,
    I'm trying to do something relatively simple, but am having trouble figuring out why it's not working.  I want a script that scales a text layer to the correct size so that it fits the extents of its parent comp.  I have found a couple of resources that do this, but I think these scripts assume that AE is running with its GUI.  In my case, I'm running afterfx.exe from a batch script with the -noui switch.  So, when running AE with the -noui switch, it seems that using the app.executeCommand() function doesn't seem to work right.  Here are the threads I found for handling exactly what I want, but that both incorporate the app.executeCommand() method:
    http://www.aenhancers.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=150&start=45
    and
    http://aenhancers.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=150&start=60
    Does anybody have any other suggestions for writing a script that fits a text layer to size, or are these the only alternatives out there?
    Thank you for your time and help!

    You don’t need to use app.executeCommand() for that any more. Something like this should work:
      var myComp = app.project.activeItem;
      var myLayer = myComp.layer(1);
      var myRect = myLayer.sourceRectAtTime(0,false);
      var myScale = myLayer.property("Scale").value;
      var myNewScale = [myScale[0]myComp.width/myRect.width,myScale[1]myComp.height/myRect.height];
      myLayer.property("Scale").setValue(myNewScale);

  • Can't enter text in threaded frame

    How basic can this be?
    After writing one book I'm preparing master pages for a second. When I created this document I selected the "master" option
    I've copied master spreads in the lower frame of the Pages box. I liked several frames on the spreads together.
    Now I've come back to those pages. I can select the frame but I can't enter text manually or pasting. The text cursor will not stay in the frame.
    My goodness. How elementary can this be, what the heck am I missing?
    Thank you for your help.
    Scott

    What I did was go back to the master pages and delete the existing text frames and rebuilding. That took
    care of it.
    Thanks for your prompt help. I appreciate it.

  • How search text in current frame of external swf?

    Hello Everyone
    I am loading an external swf using loader.
    How do search and highlight the text in the current frame only?
    Is there a frame class which I could use?
    Thanks

    This is not likely to be possible in the general case, depending on what you mean by "searching text"
    For instance, a Word doc might have the text "Hello, world!" when viewed in Word, but that doesn't mean that the sequence of characters 'H', 'e', 'l', 'l', 'o', etc., exists in the file. There might be one letter, then some binary data indicating that the next letter is some other font or color, then one more letter, then more binary data, etc.
    Conversely, there could be textual metadata in a "binary" file that a person reading the file in the appropriate viewer would never see. Unless you know the details of the format you're reading, you won't be able to distinguish that from "real text".
    And what do you mean "strings" is not efficient? Have you tried it? Does it do what you want? Did you measure and determine that it does not meet your well-defined performance requirements? It's unlikely you'll be able to write code that does the same thing as "strings" but more "efficiently."
    The first step is to put more realistic boundaries on your requirements and define them more precisely. "Extract text from any binary file," is not a valid, meaningful, or reasonable requirement.
    EDIT: I may have misunderstood your requirements. I thought you wanted to "extract all text" from binary files. If that's not what you meant, and you're looking more to replicate grep, then follow Joachim's advice.

  • Need help with fitting text onto page

    I'm working on a website where I have a template with an
    editable region where I put all the main text for each page. I
    originally had it set up for scroll bars so when the text inside
    the cell of the editable region didn't fit, scroll bars would
    appear (I used overflow in the CSS). Now the client tells me they
    don't want scroll bars but want the text area to dynamically expand
    vertically to fit whatever amount of text. The problem is, when I
    try to put in a lot of text in the editable region, it breaks the
