Five dead iMacs, all in a row... help?

Hi,
Over the years I have had a dozen iMacs from the revA up. Now I have a collection of five of them that are dead. I would like to cannibalize them to see if I could get a couple back up. My question:
What three parts are the MOST likely failures? All present with no startup, no nada. And all were running MacOS 9. For example, is the internal battery the same part number on all?
I'm going to use one of the remaining 233 as the "good parts" bin for now. All
Thanks

Miguel V...
I would say the flyback is the most common expected failure in a iMac (CRT). My guess is about 90-95%. This involves the Analog Board in the Tray Loaders, PAV board in the Slot loaders. Power supplies and other related items seem to be more rare but possible.
The Mac(s) that use a 3.6v 1/2 AA Lithum, standard tip & base battery, is a common industry standard. My preference has been the Saft LS 14250C mainly because of quality construction and 1.2 Amp/hour capacity. Others are probably ok but I can get them at a wholesale price 3 to 1 of the Radio Shack or Apple price.
Apple does list their own part numbers of which was given when some specs was drawn up at the time of manufacture. Those are just for ordering purposes and may contain other brands of acceptable quality.

  • How to get data from hard drive in dead iMac?

    I have an old slot-loading iMac (350Mhz G3 blueberry) that just died, probably a dead power supply or something. Won't turn on at all. I don't care about restoring it, I just want to take the hard drive out and grab data from it. I've found instructions for removing the HD ... but any tips on the best/cheapest way to hook it up to get data from it? It's EIDE I believe from what I've read so far. Thanks for any help.

    Hey Richard.....Thanks for the reply to my question about my wife's dead iMac.....
    Her iMac had been acting up lately, mostly to do with her Outlook Express freezing up in OS9. I dunno if OS9 was freezing or if the application was failing. Regardless, I would have to quit OS9, restart Outlook which at the same time restarted OS9. All would be fine for a while, a day or two and then the scene would repeat itself. But I think that issue is separate from the iMac being "dead". Often we have power outages in the area, more than we should. I had the iMac plugged into a battery backup, some APS product I think it is. I believe it is only good for less than an hour as we have other devices drawing on it too. Most of our power outages are of short duration, just enough to be aggravating, sometimes having to reset clocks, etc...And a couple times, I would have to reset the time and date on the iMac so this told me that the PRAM battery was below minimum voltage. But the iMac would ALWAYS restart, even with the low battery. But the most recent outage, about one hour duration, did in the iMac, somehow or other. I do believe the battery backup basically fully discharged. So I removed the battery, could not find a new battery locally so I drove to the big city and paid the local Apple service dealer a visit. I got ripped big time price wise, embarrassed to say. So I get home, put the battery in the holder, depressed the CMU reset, the powerbutton illuminated as did a green LED by the memory modules for less than three seconds and then quit. I also heard the HD trying to spin up and a high voltage THUMP which I assume is the CRT trying to ignite. If I unplugged the iMac, removed the battery, plug in the power again and hit the power button, the iMac would repeat the same short on period and then quit. So it did not seem to make any difference if there was a battery in place. I read somewhere to pull the battery, pull the AC cord, hold down the power button to dump any current (?) and let the unit sit for 24hrs. After that length of time, I was supposed to replace the battery, depress the CMU reset, wait ten seconds and then feed it AC. Well, when I pressed the power button, I heard life for maybe five seconds, maybe a second longer, then a beep and then it shut down. I pulled the AC cord, pulled the battery, re-inserted the battery, depressed the CMU reset, waited a few seconds, plugged in the AC cord, depressed the power button and I am back at the under three seconds of "power-up" and then nothing, dead, no beep, nothing. I think maybe it is a waste of time trying to mess with this unit, looking for a newer iMac on eBay, the snowball series with the 17" LCD, might be time better spent. Hate throwing stuff away, that's why I am up to my ears in junk, maybe u know that scenario. The wife likes my 19" ACER LCD screen, hooked up to this old dual 800mhz, though she dislikes the noise and the tower. But we both agree the large LCD screen is much easier on our aging eyes than the old iMac CRT. Anyway, I appreciate your help, always GREAT to correspond with an Apple fan.....John Bauer

  • Using a hair-dryer to resurrect a dead iMac CTR!

    I visit this forum often enough to see how many people are finding it hard to get their old (but perfectly usable) iMac CTR to work again.
    Well, after putting in a new battery, my good old iMac G3 400 SE slot loader was still not booting. I knew everything worked. I turned it off for a day, and then it wouldn't boot up again. All I got was a green flicker as I tried to power on.
    Well, low and behold, I used a hair-dryer to warm up the inside of the system, and it booted up fine!
    Hopefully this might work for some others with presumable dead iMac G3s. But the question is why??? If I put the system to sleep I get the same "playing dead" iMac and have to wake it up again with the hair dryer. Any thoughts?

    Thanks for your input. Yes I did check a number of things, including all connectors fitting ok, but maybe I missed something. I did try swapping out even the logic boards and hard drives, to no avail. My guess it is something with the monitor itself, since the other components work fine, and only when the monitor is heated enough will it start.
    I have no problems with the computer otherwise, but I hate to waste electricity - it just can't sleep or it will play dead. Thanks again.
    I hope this might help others who might have the same problem thinking it is something wrong with the computer, when it is really the monitor. Go get those hair dryers revved!

  • Removing a DVD from the drive in a dead iMac

    a friend's iMac recently "died". this has been determined by going through the process of troubleshooting why it will turn on, and chime, but not go any farther. no apple logo, no beach ball, just the "gray screen of death". it is assumed it is because of the now-famous overheating issue these machines die from. it is less than 4 years old.
    my problem is, while trying to diagnose this machine, i put in my OS X system disk to see if it would boot from that instead of the hard drive (one of the recommended actions in troubleshooting), and now the disk is stuck in the drive with no obvious way to retrieve it. tried the eject button, tried the mouse button trick, tried inserting a pair of tweezers to physically remove it. short of major surgery on the case or paying a "genius" to extract it for me, are there any suggestions for getting this {now] expensive paper weight to cough up the disk? thanks.

    HI,
    Got the Remote?
    Help to eject SL disk with a Remote.
    Does your iMac have a Front Row Remote? If it does, you can use that to eject the SL disc when you restart the computer.
    Try these steps to eject the cd if you have the remote.
    Holding down the Menu button on the remote while starting up an Intel Macintosh enters the Startup Manager (same as holding the Option key at startup). The remote can then be used to cycle through all bootable partitions and can then confirm them by pressing the Play/Pause button. This can be especially useful for Boot Camp users who might frequently use this feature to boot into Windows partitions on the Intel Macs. The remote can also eject CDs or DVDs in this menu by selecting the disc and then pressing the + (Volume Up) button on the remote.
    i put in my OS X system disk
    The install disc(s) that come with Macs are "machine specific" meaning they cannot be used on another Mac.

    Hope you can help.
    I have added a new email address but kept my Id, but I get busy when trying from iPhone to iPad as they are clashing. Like find my iPhone app hence trying to keep them all on one account

    IOS: using facetime http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4319
    using an ipad will use the email address since you can't make a phone call.  see the link.
    Your basically calling/emailing yourself that's why your getting a busy signal.

  • I need to get back individually erased photos and videos from my iMac with no backups to help. Please help

    i need to get back individually erased photos and videos from my iMac with no backups to help. this is an attempt to consolidate all my data, new and old so I can uninstall Maverick and put Mountain Lion back on my iMac.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    If the files have been overwritten and you don't have a backup, they're gone.
    If they have not been overwritten, then there are third-party apps (for example Techtool Pro 7 ) with data recovery functions that might be able to retrieve some or all of your files.
    Backing up is good.

  • G5 iMac won't start! Help needed.

    Got a new intel iMac. Gave my husband my old G5 iMac (not intel). It was working perfectly. For some reason unknown to me, he decided he was going to reinstall everything from scratch so he grabbed the first disk he saw and put it in the computer. It was the startup disk for an intel computer & NOT for the iMac G5.
    Did he fry the computer? It won't start up. Keypad & mouse won't respond.
    The screen can't find the driver (no surprise) and says "panic: we are hanging here...." I can't get the disk out of the drive. Service contract is up. Is there a way I can connect my laptop to it and get it to respond & spit out that intel disk? Perhaps if I open the cover up, I can into the CD drive and get the disk out. All ideas appreciated.

    Hi Mel Kev
    Have you tried holding down the left mouse button when you turn the computer on. Holding down the left mouse button should force eject the disk.
    Hope this helps

    And it WORKED! (I really wasn't in the mood to do surgery on the computer this evening). Thanks all!!! You are awesome!

  • Search for a word and return all the  lines (row) from the text file..

    Hi all,
    I need a help on how to search a string from the text file and returns all the lines (rows) where the searched string are found. I have included the code, it finds the indexof the string but it does not return the entire line. I would appreciate your any help.
    public class SearchWord
         public static void main(String[] args){
         //Search String
         String searchText = "man";
         //File to search (in same directory as .class file)
         String fileName = "C:\\Workspace\\MyFile.txt";
         //StringBuilder allows to create a string by concatinating
         //multiple strings efficiently.
         StringBuilder sb =
         new StringBuilder();
         try {
         //Create the buffered input stream, which reads
         //from a file input stream
         BufferedInputStream bIn =
         new BufferedInputStream(
         new FileInputStream(fileName));
         //Holds the position of the last byte we have read
         int pos = 0;
         //Holds #of available bytes in our stream
         //(which is the file)
         int avl = bIn.available();
         //Read as long as we have something
         while ( avl != 0 ) {
         //Holds the bytes which we read
         byte[] buffer = new byte[avl];
         //Read from the file to the buffer
         // starting from <pos>, <avl> bytes.
         bIn.read(buffer, pos, avl);
         //Update the last read byte position
         pos += avl;
         //Create a new string from byte[] we read
         String strTemp =
         new String(buffer);
         //Append the string to the string builder
         sb.append(strTemp);
         //Get the next available set of bytes
         avl = bIn.available();
         catch(IOException ex) {
         ex.printStackTrace();
         //Get the concatinated string from string builder
         String fileText = sb.toString();
         int indexVal = fileText.indexOf(searchText);
         //Displays the index location in the file for a given text.
         // -1 if not found
         if (indexVal == -1)
              System.out.println("No values found");
         else
              System.out.println("Search for: " + searchText);     }
    }

    Hi, you can use servlet class and use this method to get the whole line of searched string. You can override the HttpServlet to treat that class as servlet.
    public class ReportAction extends HttpServlet {
    protected void doPost(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response)
    throws ServletException, IOException {
    //write your whole logic.
    BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("your file name"));
    String line = "";
    while(line = br.readLine() != null) {
        if(line.contains("your search string")) {
            System.out.println("The whole line, row is :"+line);
    }

  • I am missing something in integrating iMac w/ iCloud. Plz help.

    I am trying to get Photo Stream up and running on my iMac, iPhone, and iPad, but have run into trouble. I have upgraded iPhoto to 9.2. I have 10.7.3. I am in the Cloud (I have the email, contacts, Find my Phone, calendar, and iWork icons). I go to the iMac setup step that starts with the Photo Stream splash screen that says "No, Thanks. Turn on Photo Stream".
    I click "Turn on Photo Stream" and get the iCloud splash screen that has the "Move to iCloud" button.
    I click on that and get the Find My Phone map and box where I enter in my password. I enter that and get the grey textured screen that says to use the app, go to iCloud.com
    I click "Go to iCloud.com" and see the light blue map and am told to enter my password AGAIN. I do and my devices are located (this wasn't the goal, as I HAVE my devices).
    I click on the cloud next to "My Devices" and I see my 5 icons (mail, contacts, calendar, find my phone, and iWork), but no sunflower photo stream icon.

    Re: I am missing something in integrating iMac w/ iCloud. Plz help.
    Apr 15, 2012 4:49 PM (in response to Winston Churchill)
    I went to Sys Pref. > iCloud.
    Sys. Pref. changes from the Show All view to the iCloud splash IN Sys. Pref. and has the button "Move to iCloud", which I pushed.
    I so appreciate your help, Winston Churchill, and yours, Csound 1, but as I have copied above, I HAVE tried that. Pardon, my frustration at this point, but I have tried every way to H*l! I can see this calls for a phone chat. Thanks anyway.

    Hmm. The problem still may be the RAM - Apple buys the RAM it puts in its machines from third-party vendors (usually Hynix) so it could be a RAM problem.
    There are a couple of things that you can do yourself before taking your machine into an Apple Store or an AASP... download and run an application named Rember that will run a RAM test for you - let it run for a couple of hours or even overnight. If it turns out that your RAM is faulty, Rember will let you know. If it is faulty, then you have a couple of options - replace the RAM yourself or (particularly if you're under warranty still) take the machine to an Apple Store or AASP and have them replace the RAM.
    If Rember finds no fault with the RAM, then you'll need to take it into an Apple Store/AASP and get a free diagnosis on the machine. Three beeps do usually indicate faulty RAM, but if it tests good with Rember you likely have another problem - it could be something as simple as the RAM, somehow, not seated correctly or signs of another hardware problem.
    Run Rember first... call back with results.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
