FIve dots where volume bar should be

My nano seems to be working fine but instead of the time bar / volume bar that is supposed to be at the bottom of the screen while a song is playing, i see five dots. how do i change this? is it a tech issue or just a setting that i cant seem to find? thanks
PC   Windows XP

Is it "stuck" on that screen?
If so, this is a known bug with some iPods.

You may need to update your firmware to the latest version to avoid this happening again.

  • Blue dots where volume control should be.

I just got my iPod nano and when I turned it on this morning to listen to a song blue circles were where the blue bar is supposed to be at the bottom of the screen when you are listening to a song. I can still turn the volume up and down, and listen to the song. But I can no longer see how long the song is or where I am in the song.
Did I just press something to make it do this? Please help me fix it! Thanks - Canadianskibabe

all u have to do is hit the middle button to cycle through menus.

  • Says PM where signal bars should be?

On the main screen at the top it has PM (where the signal bars should be), the battery percentage (where the time should be) and nothing to the right... When I open safari, everything is back to normal at the top. When I go back to main screen it's there again...
I restarted my iPhone and its not there anymore.. What happened?? (So I know if it happens again)

Just a one time glitch, most likely. Glad you got everthing working again.

  • Questions about ringtones, skipping volume bar, more...

    1) Both on my iPod touch and iPhone 3G the volume bar skips around the screen. I have had multiple products of the same SKU and they all have the same problem. If you have a response, include the number in your post.
    2) My iTunes credit was reduced from 6.48 to 1.00
    3) I bought a music video that never downloaded
    4) Can I recover ringtones and music videos off my old computer that was stolen?
    5) Keyboard lag. What's up with that?
    6) Why does my mother's iFwn 1st gen have better picture quality than my iFwn 3G?
    7) Only one of the speakers works. Unless the other is a mic
    8) My mothers iFwn has benn through 2 computers now but it still has crashing problems. It has been through multiple restores where she has lost all her pictures and contacts. This is not easy for her, what the **** do I have to say to the Apple store employees to get her iPhone replaced?

    1) Not sure what you mean. Are you turning the iphone on it's side? This will change to landscape view. You can see where the volume bar should be in the manual.
    2) Did you not buy something?
    3) Contact itunes support, they are very helpful. The link is on your receipt.
    4) If the missing purchases are on you iphone you can attach iphone to an authorized itunes and hut File>Transfer purchases.
    5) Many have reported this. Do you have 2.1 software update?
    6) ?
    7) Iphone has only one speaker. You can see this on page 15 "basics" of the manual.
    8) Without using foul language, explain what is happening. Many people have had their iphones replaced for similar reasons.

  • Dots instead of time/volume bar

Every so often, my ipod nano will show a row of blue dots instead of the bar that shows the time that a track has been playing or the volume. It eventually goes away, but I'm not sure what I did to make it go away. Any suggestions as to what to do to get rid of the dots and make the time/volume bar come back?

That is the rating screen - where you can rate from 0-5 stars for the song that is currently playing. Use the wheel to select the rating, the press the center button to return to the progress bar.

  • My iPhone 4s no longer has sound for any of the applications but it does have sound for phone functions.  Where is the setting for app sound?  I have gone to the multitask screen and the volume bar is empty.

I recently found my phone outside in light rain (it had been there about 20 minutes).  It had some glitches at first, however after letting it rest overnight it seemed to mostly recover.  The one problem I am having is that I no longer have sound for any of my applications.  I do have sound for phone fuctions, and I am able to use the speaker for phone functions.
When I am in my applications, including music/videos, the only way I can hear is if I use my earbuds.  I am able to make a video and it will record sound just fine.
When I go to the multitask screen, the volume bar is empty and I cannot adjust it using the side buttons (even though in settings I have that feature activated). I completely reset all of my settings tonight and that did not make a difference.
Is there a setting I am missing, or am I just SOL?  I am trying to avoid having to get a whole new phone but it is very frustrating to not have sound with my applications.

  • 30gb video iPod, where is my volume bar while playing music?

I see a white volume bar while playing video podcasts, but not while listening to music. Where is it, how can I get it to show up? Do I need to change the color?

All of the songs had artwork associated with them (on my computer) from the very beginning. When I uploaded them the first time, shouldn't the artwork have gone with them? When you upload album art, is there a way to find it on the iPod, other than playing the songs? In other words, does it reside in a directory that I can view? If there is, I can at least confirm whether the artwork ever made it to the iPod. It just seems weird that it shows up in iTunes but not on my 'pod.
I know that I had the setting orginally set at "automatic" and then at some point I changed it to manual, and then back to automatice, which is how it is set now. But again, I prepared my database of songs on my computer (including artwork) before I ever uploaded them to my virgin iPod, so I thought it would have gone with them from the start.

  • Why is the volume bar gone?

The volume bar has disappeared. Instead there are 5 small dots at the bottom of the screen when I'm listening to a song. What does this mean and how do I fix it? Everything else seems fine. Thanks

It seems that you may have accidentally struck the center button a few times. Try hitting this button a few times and cycling through the different screens (the five dots are part of the rating screen; hitting the center button once more should return you to the main screen).

  • Dv5-1124ca volume bar not working

I've had my laptop for just over a month now, and every thing is fine minus the volume bar. Ever so oftent it will do something annoying like the display well stay up and it will continue to click and stuff, but that goes away when i press stop. Anyways now Im having another problem with the volume bar, when ever i try and use it it doesnt really adjust anything. Its acting kind of like a spring, it will go up a few levels then go right back to where it was. I've tryed reinstalling quick launch and quick touch, updating them, and even the recovery manager and dont know what else to try. Anyone have any suggestions?
Message Edited by syst3m on 02-09-2009 09:51 PM

This usualy happens when the quicktouch driver doesn't interact properly with the audio driver. Reinstalling both will almost always resolve this issue.
Click on start, in the start search bar directly above, type REC. This will give you the option to open Recovery Manager. In recovery manager, select advanced options. Select hardware driver reinstallation. Click Next, then Next agian. In the list of avalibale driver, select your Quicklaunch (or quick touch) drivers and reinstall them. Then select and reinstall your audio driver. This SHOULD resolve your issue. If it doesn't you might try going online and looking for an updated version of both.

  • When I go to Preview to view a photo it shows up for less than a second then disappears and just leaves a gray box where the photo should be. iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014). I need Preview for work.

After the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 update When I go to use Preview to view a photo it shows up for less than a second then disappears and just leaves a gray box where the photo should be. iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014). I need Preview for work.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a general summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a particular line of text to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
These are not specific instructions; just an overview. The details are in parts 7 and 8 of this comment. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. Load this linked web page (on the website "Pastebin.") The title of the page is "Diagnostic Test." Below the title is a text box headed by three small icons. The one on the right represents a clipboard. Click that icon to select the text, then copy it to the Clipboard on your computer by pressing the key combination command-C.
If the text doesn't highlight when you click the icon, select it by triple-clicking anywhere inside the box. Don't select the whole page, just the text in the box.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window to activate it. Paste from the Clipboard into the window by pressing command-V, then press return. The text you pasted should vanish immediately.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

  • The little red dot with a bar on the weekly calender

Stupid question...In iCAl I have a little red dot with a bar attached to is that goes across the entire week. It is next to the timeline at about 2:00. It only shows up on the week calender. What is this bar? What does it do? Can one make it go away? It's killing me. I can't find a setting for it, an explanation, a right click...nothing. It's just buggin' me. Anyone???

    NCesau,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The red dot with the bar is supposed to represent the current "Time of Day." It will/should be displayed in the Day, and Week views. It appears as if your TOD is stagnant, i.e. not working, if is stationary at the 2:00 time, and only visible in the Day view.
There is no user preference to change the normal behavior.
Since your iCal appears not to be working as advertised, you may be able to regain normal function by refreshing the iCal plist file. You will find the com.apple.iCal.plist file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Quit iCal, drag the .plist file to your Desktop, log out/in or restart and check iCal for normal behavior.

  • Volume bar missing and accesory may not be supported

I am using Iphone 4, the volume bar is missing, and from 2-3 days when I plug the dock it says accessory may not be supported, when I adjust the dock cable it shows charging but actually charges very very very slow and after some time it again shows accessory may nor be supported . I have already cleaned the dock, Help. Is this the problem of dock, should I get it replaced..?

Try to use the Apple USB cable that came with the phone and connect it directly to the adapter. if this works, the problem is your dock.
If it is still not charging correctly, you should get it checked by an Authorized Appel Service Provider or Apple Store:
iPhone - Contact Support - Apple Support
Did you already try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10 sec, until the Apple logo comes back again?
You will not lose data by resetting, but it can clear some glitches.

  • Volume Bar wont show

Bottom Line: volume bar wont show
ive tried cleaning the dock connecter with a tooth brush, with a paper towel, blowing it, nothings working
Ive also tried erasing, restoring, reseting, turning the phone on/off, going to settings > music > sound check > on/off
I need help or should i just go to APPLE and have them replace it?

I assume you have a back up. Put in recovery mode turn off device hold down home button while connecting cable to the phone keep holding home button down until you see itunes and cable image on screen of the iphone. Itune will descover the device in recovery mode click ok and then click restore. Setup device as new device and test it.
