Fix for black/gray screen/no audio with purchased content issue

Ok, here's what finally worked for me:
1. Download the 10.6.4 Combo Updater (using Safari on Apple's support pages, not Software Update)
2. Download the iTunes 9.2 installer (using Safari on Apple's support pages, not Software Update)
3. Delete iTunes application
4. Delete AppleMobileDevice.kext from /Library/Extensions
5. Run 10.6.4 Combo Updater and restart
6. Run iTunes 9.2 installer (no restart needed)
I can FINALLY play all of my purchased content, no gray screens, no missing audio. Hope this helps others!

Dan, I followed your suggestion to the letter but it didn't work for me. Is it possible that you left a step out?
Thanks in advance...

  • Out of nowhere i get a black & gray screen saying to restart

this has happened 3 times since ive gotten my 12" powerbook less than 3 weeks ago. just out of nowhere, doing normal tasks, i get a black & gray screen that takes up most of the screen. it says to press and hold the power button to restart the computer. why is it doing that? the only thing i can think of is my ram, cuz i upgraded it. but i ran the hardware checker from the installation dvds and it said everything was fine. nothing wrong with the ram or any hardware. so how do i fix this and why is it doing this? im not sure whether i had these peripherials connected the other times, but i use a 250gb firewire hard drive most of the time. and i had a 160gb usb hard drive connected this last time (dont use a whole lot). this time i had both connected though.

    Steve,,
I've got an iMac G5 and have exactly the same problem. Mine started after I installed Tech Tool Pro. 4.5 update and eDrive. I took the eDrive off but it didn't help and start-ups were only occasionally successful (the computer was getting confused between my system and the eDrive's system).
I ran Tech Tools, Disc Warrior and Disk Utility - all from disc, but to no avail. I will always get the black and grey "crash" screen when the computer is cold, and may have to restart 3 or 4 times before the computer runs. Then it is unstable for 5 or 10 more minutes and may crash in the middle of any activity. Nothing seems to be lost in the crashes and I run Disk Utility every time I get the system up and running. It always gives me this message:
    Determining correct file permissions.
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./Library/Widgets. New permissions are 16877
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./usr/lib/php/build/acinclude.m4. New permissions are 33060
I'll check my hardware as was suggested by another user. Thanks for sharing your "challenge".

  • Gray screen, flashing folder with ? In it....

I can't even power up my comp, why I try and turn it on, a gray screen comes up with a flashing folder that has a question mark in it. And ideas on solutions?! Thanks guys!!

"If you see a flashing question mark when you start your Mac, it's probably because it can't find the system software it needs to start up. Usually, all you have to do to get your Mac back up and running is remind it where its software is."
"If your computer starts up normally after a brief delay, you probably just need to reselect the startup disk in Startup Disk preferences. It's normal to see the flashing question mark when a startup disk has not been selected. In most cases, reselecting the startup disk is all that is required to resolve the issue."

  • HELP! Gray Screen & File Folder with Question Mark!

    Hello!
If anyone can offer suggestions or if you've dealt with this before I would love feedback so that we can fix this problem!
I recently converted my husband from a PC user to a Mac user (it was a happy day). A little over 1 month ago we bought a brand new 20" iMac and since then everything has gone quite smoothly, he's even said how happy he is with the switch!
Then yesterday morning as I lay sleeping in the other room a noise similar to dial up internet woke me. I went into the office to find the internet up on the screen of our iMac, Firefox wouldn't shut down so I tried force quitting, but that too did not work. Finally I pushed the power button, and went back to bed.
A few hours later as I went to check my email I powered on the iMac and got a gray screen. Nervous, I turned if off, and then back on in safe mode. I still got a gray screen but now with a file folder with a question mark inside flashing at me. Thankfully we're within the 1yr. warrenty so we took it back and they're diagnosing the problem....but I'm worried about the outcome.
Has anyone else had this problem? What was the result? What caused it? We save most everything onto external hard drives (thankfully!) so it's not as if the machine was being overloaded. It kept making that weird dial up noise too... kind of a bleeb, fans running, trying to work noise. Obviously my husband isn't so thrilled with Macs now. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

Welcome to Discussions - you have an intel iMac, and this is the PPC G5 forum, but even so, I would first advise you to buy Apple Care before then first year of ownership is up.
Then, I would remind you that all electronics will fail at some point, but the exact point is unknown and sometimes is much sooner than it should be. It would be interesting to hear from you what the exact failure was, there do not seem to be many reports of intel power supply failures, that seems to have been fixed since the era of the G5s.
The flashing question mark is usually a sign that the hard drive has failed and drives can fail at any point, yours may simply have some bad sectors; it could also be the logic board and again, they fail, but usually not within the first three years. Your machine may have been defective to begin with, it certainly doesn't sound as if you have been abusing it, so do please let us know what the ultimate diagnosis was.

  • Gray screen, flashing folder with question mark

My macbook pro was working normal in the afternoon...  I closed the computer lid and returned a couple hours later to a gray screen & flashing folder with a question mark.  When I hold the option key down at startup I only get an internet recovery mode.  I plugged in my airport time capsule and was able to boot from it.  I used disc utility check and everything checked out ok.  I used my ESET NOD32 Antivirus and it checked out ok.  Finally, I went to start up disc and restarted my computer from the Mac HD.  This also worked without problem.  Afterwards I disconnected my airport capsule and restarted the computer as a final test.  Unfortunately I am back to the flashing folder with a question mark.  What do I do?

    Hello Antonio;
After many, many test I discovered that the problem, at least in my case it is caused by the new ACR 4.5. Please read the Thread that I post under Camera Raw. I include the link below.
I also open two Bug Reports about this, but as usual Adobe (and other Software Companies) will never take responsability for this, until one day they release a new version with "enhancements".

  • Fix for Black Screen on MBP 3,1 - Still under 10.5.7 - 30 Hours later & OK

    All,
I have no idea if my fix will work for you and I have no real idea why it worked - But it has worked for me and at this moment in time (touch wood) it has been stable for 30 hours and everything runs really well - even VMWare Fusion using a Boot Camp partition... No waking or rebooting issues at all. And believe me I have done a lot of them to make sure.
Have a read and see if this is something you want to try - As my machine is business critical, I am breathing easy now as I desperately needed this week (same last week, but let's just live with it). Obviously, this is about as unofficial as you can get and please bare in mind I am a photographer, not a techie. But, for what it is worth, if there is something that you can gleam from what I did to help you get back up and running, I'll be a happy chappy...
I posted it here so it is central. http://blog.ginkgostudios.com/2009/05/just-a-note-of-caution-this-worked-for-me- i-hope-it-works-for-you-but-obviously-i-cant-guarantee-that-i-just-thought-i-wou .html

    teamtomsk:
The comment in the linked blog about there being no software fix for this refers to a known hardware problem with certain MacBook Pro computers shipped with a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor. Read MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues to learn more about this.
If your (or any other user's) MacBook Pro is one of the ones shipped with a prone-to-failure 8600M GT graphics processor, it should be checked at an Apple Retail Store or Authorized Service Provider, whether or not Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) -- which seems to be what you did -- temporarily fixes it.

  • Can't watch video, only gray screen, no audio. What happened?!

I downloaded a video and the next thing I can't watch ANY of my videos on itunes. I only see a gray screen and no audio. Help!

  • Gray screen on bootup with external HDD attached

I recently bought a Cavalry 1TB External USB hdd. Following their instructions, I connected the drive after I started up and logged into the Mac. Formatted the drive as Extended (non-journaled) with the Apple Partition.
It mounts and runs fine, if I don't have it connected to the mini on start-up. I get a gray screen and it pretty much does nothing, if it is connected on startup of the mini. So I have to shut down the drive, unplug it, hold down the mini power button to shut that down, then restart mini, login, plug the USB drive in, and turn it on. It is then recognized again.
I called Cavalry and they suggested that the mini is looking to boot off of the USB drive first, and that's why it's hanging. Could this really be the problem? If so, is there a way to configure the mini to look at the internal hard drive drive before the USB?
If this isn't the problem, does anyone have any ideas about what it could be?
    Thanks.

So I tried pretty much every format configuration possible for the drive, and no dice for boot-up or for the "Startup Disks" listing.
I reformatted for windows and that worked without a hitch (not really surprising, and good if (for when) I have to sell it).
So running out of options, and totally frustrated, I gave up, sent it to Bason (Cavalry's Tech Support provider) and their Tech claims "works fine on my machine!", so they're sending it back to me.
What I find curious is that my wife's Black MacBook doesn't see the thing either on startup, though it only hangs for a short time on her's.
I expect the drive to still not work, though I will give it a try when I receive it sometime in the next 3 days - 3 weeks.
All input on this has been very much appreciated. Any additional thoughts on this issue will continue to be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • A fix for screensavers that don't work with Snow Leopard?

is there a fix for the screensavers that no longer work with Snow Leopard? some of the developers have came out with new versions, but a few of them have been abandoned by their authors. Is there a way to run those screensavers in 32 bit mode?

Is there a way to run those screensavers in 32 bit mode?
Not without action by the original authors, sorry.
I know it doesn't help right now, but like all other OSs in the past, these types of things need to catch up since the bar has been raised once again...give it time and there will tons of entertaining s'savers out to pick from.

  • Is there a fix for the iTunes push notification problem with Dropbox on iPhone ios 7.0.4

After updating to IOS 7.0.4 iPhone (which I now regret), when I open the Dropbox App, I get a warning "Connect to iTunes to use Push Notifications". When I push OK, it pops up again, constantly, so I can't even close Dropbox. Is there a fix for this? I've uninstalled and re-instaled Dropbox and checked for updates, but nothing helps. Any ideas?

    Hello CraigNicholson
You would need to sync with iTunes to get that process to work for you. Check out the article below for more information on how to resolve that issue to get the proper token to use Push Notifications again.

HELP PLEASE, how can I get the previous system so I can reinstall it? I do not mind loosing data but I need to work on it. PLEASE HELP! Thanks!

Try booting into the Recovery HD which is on the HD. Restart holding down Command+r and at the screen with four choices select Disk Utility>Macintosh HD and click on 'repair disk'. If any changes are made click on repair disk again until you get a clear pass. Restart as normal from the Apple menu.

  • Two fixes for EPM 11.1.2.1 with HFM - Default lang. and OHS with HFM.

FIX-1 – Change so all users get English in HFM.
Tiered of wrong language in HFM? Don’t want to change browser defaults for all users?
Now you can easily change so all users get English as default (won’t affect Workspace menu).
Simple comment out the part below in file:
    *$HYPERION_HOME$\products\FinancialManagement\Web\HFM\Common\core.asp*
    +'If IsEmpty(sIdLang) Or Len(sIdLang) = 0 Then+
+' ' Change HFM language based on user's browser language settings+
+' ' Note that constants are not available yet+
    +' Dim strHTTP, strLANG, iStartingPoint+

    +' If Len(strHTTP) Then+
    +' sIdLang = Application("HsvResourceManager").GetHFMLanguageIdFromU.......+
    +' End If+
    +'+
    +' If Len(strHTTP) Then+
    +' strPos = InStr(1, strHTTP, ",")+
    +' If strPos > 0 Then+
    +' m_strAcceptLanguage = Left(strHTTP, strPos - 1)+

    +'+
    +' If IsEmpty( sIdLang ) Then+
    +' sIdLang = getCookie("Logon_LanguageId")+
    +' End If+
    +' End If+
Remember to update core.asp after a future patch of HFM or the changes might come back.
FIX-2 - SmartView or LCM problem with HFM using OHS.
If you use Oracle HTTP Server (OHS) combined with HFM then check your OHS config so it is in order or you might get HTTP Error 404.
The “hfm”-path should not be above “hfmofficeprovider” and “hfmlcmservice” or the OHS-“proxy_module” will trigger even if it shouldn't resulting in a HTTP 404 error.
The order of ProxyPass should be as follows “hfmofficeprovider” --> “hfmlcmservice” --> “hfm”.
    *$ORACLE_HOME$\user_projects\<instance>\httpConfig\ohs\config\OHS\ohs_component\httpd.conf*

The error points to issues with the HSS registry tables/database.Check through the registry report that HSS/Foundation database is still pointing to the correct schema, just to rule out the possibility of HSS pointing to the new HFM schema by any chance.
