Fix for blurry text on Dell 30" U3014 connected by DisplayPort to Mac Pro (late 2013) AMD D700

Just connected my new Mac Pro (late 2013) to my Dell 30" U3014 with DisplayPort cables, only to find blurry text and bad gamma etc.
Whilst the earlier post/discussion Mac Pro (8 core with the D700 GPU's) (Dell U2713H) was somewhat illumative, I thought a simple list of links for this specific configuration might help someone.
The Ruby script, modified for D3014 can be found at post http://embdev.net/topic/284710#3153072
If you're impatient like me, don't forget to copy the created Folder to /System/Library/Displays/Overrides before rebooting.  Thanks to Blurry text on Dell Monitor + Mac OS X | Danilo Ercoli

Hi Grant,
Thanks for taking the time to think about my issue and respond. But I don't see where your response is relevant.
I want to connect two monitors, each via Mini-Display Port, and only one will work at a time. I am not using DVI cables at all. In this article, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6068, it clearly states that I can connect three monitors via Thunderbolt (mini-display port) as long as they're on different busses. I was doing that, and it didn't work.
What display configurations can I use with my Mac Pro (Late 2013)?
You can connect up to six displays to your Mac Pro (Late 2013) running Windows 8 via Boot Camp. Check the list below to be sure you're setting up your displays in a supported configuration via the HDMI and Thunderbolt ports.
You can connect:
Six Apple LED Cinema Displays (27-inch) or third-party displays via Thunderbolt. For best results, attach displays to different Thunderbolt busses when possible (see figure below).
Three Apple Thunderbolt Displays (27-inch). Connect only one per Thunderbolt bus (see figure below). Note: You could connect three more LED Cinema Displays (27-inch) or third-party displays, one per Thunderbolt bus, for a total of six displays.
Two Apple Thunderbolt Displays (on Thunderbolt bus 1 and 2) and one 4K Ultra HD TV using HDMI.
Two 4K displays (on Thunderbolt buses 1 and 2) and one 4K Ultra HD TV on HDMI).

  • Mac pro (late 2013), Dell UP2414Q and windows8.1 bootcamp

I bought mac pro (late 2013) and Dell UP2414Q.
Monitor is set on DP1.2 and works normally in OS X. I get 4K@60Hz, I can switch to lower resolutions like 1920x1080 and it works.
Then I Installed windwos 8.1 which I need for some testing and I have aproblem here:
When DP 1.2 is enabled, and I switch to 1920x1080 resolution, I get 2 pictures on screen squeezed together - totally useless and I can't work on that.
If I disable DP 1.2 and revert on monitor to DP 1.1 it works normally. But I switch to 4K with only DP1.1 enabled I can get only 30Hz out.
As it seems under OS X I can use any resolution with DP 1.2 enabled, but not in windows 8.1 via bootcamp.
I would really really love to get this working, I tried next things, but nothing worked:
    -update bootcamp support
-update AMD gpu drivers from their web page
I already wrote on Dell forum and I got redirected here on apple forums.

which model  rMBP 13"  or rMBP 15"
the 13 will support it with the latest intel drivers.
the 15 will support it with the latest nvidia drivers.
i have both models and both are working correctly.

  • Why isn't Photoshop fully optimized for the Mac Pro (Late 2013), and when will this happen?

On the new Mac Pro (late 2013):
Currently, Photoshop CC 2014 seems to lag behind iMacs and Macbook Pros (even older ones) for some tasks.
I assume that this issue is related to either multi-core processing but seems more likely to be a problem with the ATI GPUs not being optimized as the Nvidia GPUs are.
Why is this the case, and when will this be addressed?
Any feedback from Adobe official would be appreciated.
    Thanks

We don't even know what your specific issues are, and for all we know you may be running the pathetic, buggy Yosemite OS—which Apple is giving away for free.

  • How can Mac Pro (late 2013) create a WiFi network for Mac Books to connect to internet?

I am moving my Mac-Pro (late 2013) to a garden office.  I have an ethernet cable to connect it to the house network.  I also have a Mac Book Air which will only connect to a network by WiFi.  I can use this Mac-Pro to create a WiFi network and the MacBook can talk to the Mac Pro over this WiFi network.  But the Mac Book does not see the local network let alone the Internet, both of which are seen on the Mac Pro.
Is there a way that I can connect the created WiFi network to one of the two Ethernet cards in the Mac Pro?
    Or what?
    Tim

    I have half cracked it.
For some reason the first step it to turn internet sharing off.
Then internet sharing can be configured and the wireless network set up and given a password.
Then, and then only, turn internet sharing back on and turn WiFi ON.  All this is on the Mac-Pro (late 2013).
Now the Mac Air sees the new network and can log on and connect to the WAN internet locations, at least via Safari.
BUT if I use Finder on the Air, it will connect to the Mac Pro but it will not display what is on its disc. Though I can do screen sharing.  Odd.
Also Air-Drop has stopped working, so there is no means of transferring files between the Pro and the Air.
I am going away now for a few days and will revisit this on my return.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Mac Pro Late 2013 or iMac Late 2013 for photo editing?

    Hi,
I am currently running with a Late 2009 iMac (i7, 2.8 GHz, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD) and I am mainly doing RAW post-processing with Lightroom and some steps (auto-stitching panoramas, more complicated layered editing/sharpening/re-coloring) in Photoshop CS 5.5.
With the RAW images of my Canon EOS 60D and my Fuji X-M1 being >20MB I am increasingly seeing stuttering in the workflow when loading 1:1 zooms, exporting images and rendering previews. I am not sure where it's coming from but after 4 years with the iMac I think it's time for something new.
I am trying to decide between a fully-loaded Late 2013 iMac (i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD) or a Late 2013 (although more like Early 2014 ) Mac Pro (6-core 3.5 GHz, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD). Performance-wise for my use it seems in single-threaded situations the iMac might even be faster (based on Geekbench Single-Core 64Bit Benchmarks) but the Mac Pro offers two extra cores - also the memory speed in the Mac Pro is higher.
So for the first decision criteria I want to make sure I opt for the fastest machine in my use case described above - it's not really clear to me if the iMac would indeed be faster given the low multi-core utilization in Adobe's code.
The second criteria is the ability to use arbitrary displays/monitors with the Mac Pro versus having the panel included already inside the iMac. To what extend can the iMacs 27" panel be utilized for photo-processing? I heard they can't be calibrated properly and I rarely find information how much sRGB/AdobeRGB coverage the panel has. I am looking increasingly more into color-management enabled workflow to get a decent soft-proof of my photos before I sent them over for printing - this is for home and amateur use only but I had some bad experiences already with images coming out from professional photo studies with completely dark shadows and different teints.
On the other hand I would also like to use multiple but smaller monitors (24") to make use of multi-monitor support in Lightroom (Library view on second screen etc) and have third monitor to control/monitor the rest of my activities (iTunes, Spotify, Browser, Youtube etc )
An iMac with two additional 24"/27" displays will always look a bit crappy due to the different heights and visually iritating due to different panels/resolutions. On the other hand it's a much cheaper solution than a Mac Pro with 3 distinct monitors and I heard only good things about the sharpness and clarity of the iMacs screen due to reduced filtering and thinner construction.
The last criteria is how future-proof the solution is. 4K displays are clearly on the horizon and 2-3 years from now I expect them to be standard over ordinary HD displays. Even today you can use a Mac Pro with a 4K display in high-dpi mode and get a Retina display on your desktop - something I would really look forward to. With the iMac that would mean replacing the whole thing in 2-3 years if there will be a 4K/Retina-iMac at all.
The Mac Pro seems to bet better in solution longevity given it is still a very capable machine in 4-5 years from now with up to 3 4K displays hooked up and still room for at least 3 Thunderbolt 2 devices. Double Gigabit-Ethernet is nice but also only nice-to-have as it won't speed up point-to-point single-stream data transfers to a LACP-bound NAS.
So, given all these thoughts... what do you think? Would it be more wise to go with the iMac and replace it in 3 years or with the Mac Pro and keep it 4,5-6 years?

RAM and some serious PCIe-SSD storage will help Aperture/LR. But I am use to spreading things out, learned long ago the benefits on concurrent and never reading+writing though didn't have todays 1.2Gb SSD to play with.
Was not to move the thread,  but to ask there also for first hand on how they like the 2013 iMac now. I just don't feel comfortable spending that much when I know Mac Pro is designed for heavy use, better thermals, IS upgradeable, and will last longer.

  • Blurry Text On Dell UltraSharp U3014

I recently bought a Dell UltraSharp U3014 (30" Display). I have it connected to my MacBook Pro (2011 non-retina) via Mini DP to DP.  I noticed that text seemed noticably blurry, and not as crisp/sharp as I would have expected them to be.
I've checked the Display Settings and the monitor is in fact using the highest resolution 2460 x 1600).  Changing color profiles has no effect.  Also in General Settings, Font Smoothing is turned on.  I've tried settings that can be made in the terminal with no improved results:
    Medium font smoothing:
<defaults -currentHost read -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 2
    Light font smoothing:
defaults -currentHost read -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 1
    Strong font smoothing:
defaults -currentHost read -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 3
This monitor is intended for a Windows computer that I have on the way, which I hope to get better results, but it would be nice to use this monitor for my MacBook when editing on occation.  Any ideas?

Sorry wffurr this is wrong,  the problem is indeed the Mac.   Please see ippy04's answer below.
Untill I stumbled on that solution, i was using a dual link DVI adaptor to force the mac to output RGB mode, now I no longer need that adaptor.
The solution is in his answer.  I will paste it here for convenience:
The problem is the mac is incorrectly trying to use the YCbCr space instead of RGB to drive the monitor (confirm in monitor settings by going to OSM->Menu->Color Settings and checking "Input Color Format".
    This post describes a fix: http://ireckon.net/2013/03/force-rgb-mode-in-mac-os-x-to-fix-the-picture-quality -of-an-external-monitor/comment-page-1#comments
I ran the ruby script and added the folder to /System/Library/Displays/Overrides, and now text is showing up fine, even at 50 sharpness. Color space is also showing "RGB" now.

  • Cables for Mac Pro (Late 2013)

I am in transition from Mac Pro 2010 to Mac Pro 2013. Now I'm planning what kind of cables I'm going to need and where to buy them. I've got 2 Epson printers, USB keyboard, 2 30" Cinemas, USB EyeTV adapter, FireWire camera and perhaps two other USB and FW devices which I can't think of right now.
I'm planning to buy 2 expensive Apple Mini Display Port to Dual Link DVI Adapters, Thunderbolt or USB to USB Daisy chain adapter, Thunderbolt to FW adapters. I have no USB 3 devices. Also, perhaps, I need several Thunderbolt, USB and FW cable extensions.
I would like to have your opinions and recommendations.

Does  Mavericks have the problem fixed with working with the Dell UltraSharp U3014 30 inch monitor?

I have this (or a similar) issue and I did notice something interesting. After I boot into Windows via Bootcamp (where I have the U3014 specfic driver installed) and then reboot into MacOS X (Mavericks) the monitor works flawlessly.
I would hazard a guess that this means bootcamp is retaining the driver used in Windows. Kind of the reverse of the TB GBE adapter driver issue.
To explain my issue for anyone else: the monitor flicks on and off as if the connection was poor. Connecting via HDMI. Connection is fine and as stated, everything works fine in Bootcamp.

WiFi signals get stronger the closer the machine is to the router and the less interference/blocking of the signal like via walls with metal in them or of thick concrete.
Since the signal emanates outwards in a sphere, your supposed to place the wireless router in a central location in the building so it covers all areas.
The power of the router also has a affect, if your router is old or something not that powerful like a Airport Express, it doesn't have the ability to filter out other signals or enough punch to get through walls etc. or cover a large area as effectively.
If you buy/have a powerful router of newer make and have issues where there is metal in the walls or thick concrete, then you can buy something like OpenMesh and by using Ethernet cables from the back of the router, extend the WiFi signal into other rooms and areas past the blockage.

  • Do you need cuda for playback with 4k on Macbook pro late 2013?

    My question is, I have a macbook pro (late 2013) i7 ,16G ram , nvidia Gforce 750m with 2GB ddr5, mavericks osx 10.9.1.
Does this machine playback 4k with software only? or does it needs to have cuda enabled?
Because i did several tests first with RED files 4k and even with resolution on 1/4 i still have drop frames. Then i tested with Arri Alexa RAW files 2k, and premiere simply can have a decent playback no matter the resolution 1/2 lags and droped frames, 1/4 its a no go because it has a lot of pixels can't really see whats happening.
One more test was the 4k Canon IOS 1-D files. These files again look like the arri ones, i dont have a playback no matter the resolution!! These files i cant even playback them on VLC they lag all over the place.
I runned the files on the internal SSD 700MB Read write, and then on a lacie us3, same problem. On premiere with software only and with cuda, same thing.
(i already posted on a diferent discussion, im having droped frames with cuda enable on simple H264 files, so maybe for 4k is possible, but only when cuda option fully works)
So its there a problem with my computer, or you guys think its adobe premiere CC ?
    Thanks

CUDA doesn't help at all with playback.  It only helps with effects, scaling, blending modes and such.
For that kind of media, you really should be looking at a proper workstation with five internal drives:
    System
    Projects
    Cache/Scratch
    Media
    Exports
And you might want to consider making that Media drive a RAID 3, which means a minimum of seven internal drives.

    Can I use 27' iMac(Later 2009) as a display for Mac Pro(future 2013)?

    See > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
To be able to use the iMac as an external display, the Mac Pro should come with a Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port, so think that it will include Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt, although we don't know anything.
To connect the iMac to the Mac Pro, as your iMac has got a Mini DisplayPort, you have to use a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable (Thunderbolt is compatible with Mini DisplayPort cables, but Mini DisplayPort isn't compatible with Thunderbolt cables). Then, just follow the steps of the page above to use the iMac as an external display

  • Possible fix for OS X 10.5.7,  losing connection after sleep, restart

Possible fix for OS X 10.5.7, Airport, losing connection after sleep, restart, or cold reboot.
Issue: (For OS X 10.5.7 on iMac5,1, Intel Core 2 Duo)
    =============================================
    - After sleep, restart, cold reboot, even though cannot connect to Internet, but the AirPort bars are still full, as if connected.
    - Losing Internet connection after sleep, restart, cold reboot.
    Possible Fix:
1.Open Network Preference, click on the Location drop down list > Edit Location... > click on the wheel button > Duplicate Location.
a)Select this newly setup location; Use Diagnostic button to connect to the internet. Select Network or enter WEP password if necessary.
b)Test to make sure you can connect to a web page.
c)Go to sleep & wake up.
d)This time, the Airport bar will start to show correctly. Before, it will always be full even when not connected. Now there will be no bars or grey out when not connected.
2.On the left hand side of the Network Preference Window, there is a list of services, such as Airport, build-in ethernet, built-in FireWire, bluetooth, etc.
a)Click on the wheel button on the bottom of the service list; select Set Service Order...; move Airport to the top of the list.
b)Delete any services which you are sure that you are not going to use, such as Bluetooth, etc.
3.Pick one of the locations mentioned in #1, and make it sure it is connected. If not, use Diagnostic button. If you have to select Network or enter WEP password to connect, make it so.
a)Check to make sure you can connect to a web page.
4.Go to sleep & wake up. The Airport bar should be filled up quickly. Try to connect to a web page.
5.Restart computer. Test a web page.
6.Shut down & Start computer. Test a web page.
7.When everything is working fine, you can delete the extra location that you created in step #1.
8.Click the lock on the left lower corner of the Network Preference window to safeguard the setting.

If my assessment is correct, the LIDE 200 driver is version 14.8.1 and dated 26-Sep-2008. It is possible that the driver will not work with the latest version of OSX. I would advise that you contact Canon and ask them the question.
(Removed link because of the way Flash drives the Canon site).
It is not uncommon (though irritating) that devices no longer work when an OS is upgraded. One has to ask the question if (or why) the driver was not written in such a way as to be OS version independent.
    Chris
I spoke to Canon over here in Australia. Not helpful at all. In fact they were about as useful as an ashtray on on motorcycle. Having said that the tech seemed to think that there would be an update soon. But that is assuming that Canon are aware that there is a problem with that Scanner under OS X 10.5.7.
