Fix for bootcamp brightness control

Bootcamp lets you change brightness in windows, but it doesn't go as low as it does in OSX! Any fix for this?

I found a suggestion on another discussion here (can't recall which).
Download and install a screen dimmer app from

It works well -- I no longer have to wear sunglasses to use Windows 7 on my iMac 27"

  • What is the factory setting for the Brightness Control?

    Hi. I'm calibrating my monitor and I have to set the Brightness Control back to the Factory Setting. Does anybody know what the factory setting is? Thank you!

    That may still be too high. The brightness is really cranked up on monitors these days. I doubt even at the minimum setting if you can get to the recommended luminance of 150 cd/m².
    This link might help you determine the best setting. As you are adjusting the brightness up and down, you might see a subtle difference; a lot depends on the capabilities of the monitor.

  • 10.4.11 -- A fix for broken brightness/volume keys

    Simple answer: Reboot again
    I ran into this issue myself on my iBook: that after doing the mandatory reboot after the 10.4.11 update, the brightness and volume keys on the internal keyboard would no longer work.
    This seems to be an issue for a few people, going by my initial googling of the issue, so I thought I'd drop a note in here to suggest people do another reboot before pulling out their hair.

    BDAqua, no I haven't. I should probably do that again now.
    Is that related to these kinds of issues, or is that just some general maintenance advice?
    Edit: Ah I just saw your advice in [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1307351&tstart=0]. Cool.

    If this cut and paste is non-functional ( after I click 'post')...you'll find them on the M-Audio support site...but be sure to select this newer pair of files they created on : 13/09/2011
    it will probably work all the way down to osx 10.7 and maybe 10.6.8 too.

    That is not for Apple to fix, check with M-Audio.

  • Brightness control at startup with systemd

    I finally upgraded to systemd (I know... a bit later than I should have), and the transistion has been smooth, except for enabling brightness controll at boot.
    I currently have a bit of a hack working to enable brightness control on my Dell XPS 13 ultrabook. I have two backlight interfaces (/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight and /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0), and I have found that the only way to alter my screen brightness is to set the intel_backlight brightness value to 0 and then alter the brightness file under the acpi_video0 interface. I must always write the 0 to the intel_backlight/brightness file, even if it already contains 0, to enable brightness control through acpi_video0.
    I had had this code in my rc.local previously, and it worked exactly as I needed to enable brightness control:
    #!/bin/bash
    # set intel interface to 0, allowing acpi interface to take precedence
    echo 0 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
    # set the permissions of the acpi brightness file for video group (me) regular user modification
    chgrp video /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
    chmod 664 /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
    # initialize brightness to a low level
    echo 3 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
    exit 0
    Currently when I run this script normally it grants me the brightness control I desire through the modification of /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness. I have made this script into a systemd service initiated at startup, with the service file below:
    [Unit]
    Description=Brightness Control Initialization
    [Service]
    Type=oneshot
    ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/scripts/bright_init
    RemainAfterExit=yes
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    My issue is that although the service is initiated at startup without error, my brightness control does not function like it does when I run the script manually myself. I have verified that systemd considers the service to have run successfully after startup, and I have also enabled both the multi-user.target and above service.
    My questions are twofold:
    1. Is there a better way to allow brightness control other than the somewhat hacky method of zeroing the /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness file with the above script?
    2. And does anyone have an idea as to why my service doesn't work, even though I can run the script after startup and it functions as I desire?

    It is interesting to see that this is working for you. I had to add OWNER="root" to the rule. Otherwise when testing the rule with `udevadm test` I always recieved a permission denied error. But even with OWNER="root" Udev did not actually write the ATTR{brightness}="2" into the file.
    Manually doing that by echo 2 > ... works well. I searched a bit on this topic and found a thread on the Gentoo forum where they say that it is not wise to use Udev for writing anything to /sys. Instead you should use Udev to run a script that does that:
    [orschiro@thinkpad ~]$ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/50-powersave.rules
    SUBSYSTEM=="power_supply", ENV{POWER_SUPPLY_ONLINE}=="0", RUN+="/home/orschiro/Scripts/powersaving battery"
    SUBSYSTEM=="power_supply", ENV{POWER_SUPPLY_ONLINE}=="1", RUN+="/home/orschiro/Scripts/powersaving AC"
    [orschiro@thinkpad ~]$ cat /usr/local/bin/powersaving
    #!/bin/sh
    case $1 in
    battery)
    echo "Running powersaving on AC in 3 seconds"
    sleep 3
    # screen power saving"
    echo 200000 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
    AC)
    echo "Running powersaving on battery in 3 seconds"
    sleep 3
    # screen power saving
    echo 4270725 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

  • G580 brightness control animation

    Hi.
    I just got my G580 laptop today. It's the one with Intel Core i7 3520M and Nvidia GeForce GT 630M @  2GB DDR3 and 8 GB RAM in my case.
    I installed the drivers from the dvd after installing a genuine win 7 x64 professional N.
    The animation for the brightness control just stopped working. You know.. the thing you get on the screen when using the Fn+up/down keys. It's stuck in one position and it doesn't follow the brightness level which I can adjust normally (no problems there thank goodness).
    Any ideas ? Why's that happening ?  I think the nvidia driver performed some update at some point. Please don't just point to that... be helpful instead.
    Any suggestions ?
    Thanks

    Try the following:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
    Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    If you still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order. If you iPod is defective, within warranty and not abused, Apple will exchange it at no cost.

  • Has Apple come up with a fix for Parental Controls?

    I've browsed around on this forum quite a bit but haven't seen any real fix for the fact that Parental Controls does not work as advertised (come to think of it, it doesn't work at all). Is there a fix??
    I'm using a new iMac with 10.5.2 (clean install). PC has never worked, even when we first started using the machine.
    I have 3 young kids, each with his own account. All the accounts are set to 30 minute time limits per day. I have customized the Web Content tab to include some sites that are not objectionable but too advanced for my kids.
    Today one of my boys was logged in for at least an hour and a half. I check his Today's Activity log. Nothing there! I look at the Web site he's accessing. It's one of the three that I had specifically blocked! They're only in grade school but the kids have figured out that as long as they don't log off they can stay on the computer all day. This happens on all three accounts consistently. Sheesh, Apple, thanks for making me look like a real doofus in front of my kids!
    So, is Apple sending out kitchen timers to all of us Leopard users now, so we can at least have a reliable method for controlling our kids' online time?
    If there is a REAL fix out there, I'd love to hear about it?

    Is there a hot fix for this?

    Hi Charlotte,
    You don't say what your version of Windows you have. Assuming XP, go to Start | Run, type DXDIAG and click OK. Click the Sound tab and run the tests to eliminate a hardware problem first of all. If you don't hear anything, check your cables first of all. Also make sure "Mute" isn't checkmarked in your sound setup. You'll find that in Windows Control Panel.
    Which browser do you use? If you have Firefox 4, sign up to the HTML5 trial @ http://www.youtube.com/html5
    HTML5 is the latest video standard and doesn't require Flash player. Google is in the process of converting all its files to work with the new format. It may solve you problem. If you don't have Firefox 4, you can get it from here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/fx/
    IE8 doesn't support HTML5.
    To clean out your temp files, go to Start | Run, type: CLEANMGR and click OK. Click OK again to start the utility. Tick all the boxes except "Compress old files" because the latter takes too long, and then click OK. You can run this utility any time you wish by the way.
    The above steps will hopefully fix your problem. If not, post here again please.

  • HT202856 Can keyboard brightness controls be mapped for a 4K monitor on the Thunderbolt port?

    I have a 4K monitor (ASUS PQ321Q) attached to my late-2013 MacPro.
    The monitor-button controls for adjusting brightness are awkward, to put it kindly.
    Keyboard brightness controls don't seem to work.  Is it possible to map them to control the external 4K monitor's brightness?

    Yes.  Here's a quote from the attached article:
    If your Mac has one or more Thunderbolt ports, you can connect up to two displays to those ports.

  • Late 2009 iMac no brightness control windows 8 in bootcamp

    Gues I'm not the first, but I recently installed Windows 8 on my Imac late 2009 model, running Maverick on the OSX side of things. When I try to install drivers for Bootcamp, it tells me that they are not for my model etc. Any Ideas people? My retinas are burning!!

    Restart the machine in Safe Mode and then restart normally and re-test. A Safe Mode reset resets some caches, it's possible one or more of yours is corrupt. To do a Safe Mode reset, hold down the Shift Key when you hear the startup tone until you see a progress bar appear, let it fully boot then restart normally and retest.

  • Windows 7 "Dim the display" and brightness controls missing

    Is this another driver problem? I would think the Nvidia drivers would support this new feature in Windows 7.
    http://www.technospot.net/blogs/windows-7-automatically-dim-display-screen/

    I suspect you need another driver (not the video card driver) since these function require control of the backlight. It seems Apple does not provide a standard driver that can be used by Windows as the display brightness can only be controlled through Apple's bootcamp drivers in the bootcamp control panel or using the keyboard shortcuts.
    Even in Vista, if you go to the Windows mobility centre (Win+X)there should be a panel for display brightness. This panel is missing in bootcamp, suggesting the necessary drivers are missing. This is a shame, but I wouldn't hold my breath for Apple to ever provide these. Then again, I didn't think Apple would ever fix the touchpad drivers for Windows, but they seem to have finally done so in the Bootcamp 3.0 beta drivers, so maybe someday...
    Windows 7 also supports automatic brightness changes based on an ambient light sensor, but again, no appropriate driver supplied by Apple...

  • Windows 7 64-bit Brightness controls suddenly dead

    Soooo, whenever I boot up into Windows, regardless of what OS X's brightness was set to, Windows starts itself out at max brightness. Not a big deal, I thought, as I can just turn it down every time I reboot.
    Then yesterday I was digging around in the taskbar battery -> Power Options settings, and went to Change Plan Settings, where I found I could adjust the brightness level! Awesome! So I set it as low as it would go without shutting off my backlight. Aaaand that's when the problems started.
    I was unable to use my F1 and F2 keys to adust brightness anymore. The on-screen UI simply wouldn't show up. I could pull up the settings again and change it that way, but it was a bit of a pain. Oddly enough, there was no way to simply turn that setting off, i.e. make it ignore the little slider bar.
    So eventually I got used to it being on lowest-possible brightness, and used it like normal. Then I rebooted, and the problems grew.
    As usual, the system started out at max brightness as soon as windows loaded up, and of course the F buttons still didn't work. But... I clicked the battery, clicked Power Options, clicked Change Plan Settings... and suddenly, the brightness option was no longer there. Huh. I'm stuck on max brightness with no way to turn it down.
    So of course I go over to Control Panel to enable my ambient light sensor. No dig. Nothing happens. F*ck.
    Soo then I go online and look up solutions, pull up my Boot Camp Control Panel, and what's this? There's a brightness tab! That wasn't there last time I poked around in it's settings... Hmm. So, I tentatively adjust this, click Apply--and nothing happens. Okay, well it's Windows, so maybe I just have to reboot.
    Nope. Still nothing.
    Short of digging around and uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, I have done everything I've found to do and then some. I use the Windows partition to do things like PhotoShop and LiveStream, and that's how I earn my money right now, and having this thing at max brightness+photoshop+livestream is really overheating it, the last thing I want to do is push this too far and burn it up.
    I'm on a mid-2012 MBA, 13", Bootcamping between whatever the current OSX is and Windows 7 64-bit. If there's any other system information I need to provide I am willing and able to do so, just let me know.
    I really need this fixed.

    Command + R *should* take it to a recovery console. Command + Option + P + R resets the PRAM, but that doesn't sound like your fix.If all of your buttons are working fine on OSX side, I would ignore PRAM / NVRAM / SMC reset tricks, since these are tested as working fine.
    I would say you should probably reinstall the drivers for bootcamp. I tried this with 5 in Windows 8 and it gives you an option to repair. The reason I say this is because the UI isn't showing up, which means that it's using another driver.
    If this doesn't work, go into device manager and then roll back to your previous settings.
    One more thing comes to mind. Do you ever use Parallels or VMWare to load your bootcamp partition? They have their own driver packages which can cause some unwanted behavior when using windows natively.
    One last thing you can do is try to by-pass the GUI powerplan entirely. You can use the Powercfg command, which, as it happens, has instructions on how to forcefully set the brightness values. You probably won't be able to make it through these instructions since you will get an error at some point, but that will give us more diagnostic information.
    Good luck!

  • Brightness Control not working after Windows 8 install...

    Hi All,
    I have a late year 2010 MBA core2duo with 4GB of ram, and I was running Windows 7 for a long time and recently bought a Windows 8 upgrade key. I heard the boot camp drivers were updated so I decided to load it up. I installed the new boot camp drivers on the Windows 7 side before the upgrade (had to use the command line to do the driver upgrade).
    Windows 8 is all installed and the only issue I have is the brightness control doesnt work at all. I disabled the adaptive brightness as a lot of threads have been saying. Anybody have any ideas what I need to do to fix this?? It seems to be stuck on BRIGHT.

    I have been having the issue of no brighness control when running windows through bootcamp for about 6 months now and have not found any applicable solution online.
    While messing around trying to figure it out yet again I noticed that my monitor driver was signed by team viewer...
    Sure enough clicking the roll driver back button resolved the issue by rolling the driver back to the Microsoft driver...
    So long story short:
    Right click "My Computer" click properties
    Click device manager (lop left of window)
    Expand Monitors section
    Double Click monitor
    Click driver tab
    If the driver here is not signed by Microsot or Apple click the roll back button. My driver version is 6.1.7600.16385 (Driver date 6/21/2006)
    Rolling this back instantly resolved my issue. I will now propagate this post to all the threads I saw regarding this issue.
    I am running windows 7 x64 Ulti on a 15" rMBP.
    Best of luck

  • Bootcamp Brightness Problems...

    Hey all,
    Before I begin, a small preamble...
    Specs: (On a side note, I liked the System Profiler from Snow Leopard more than this user-friendly-graphical bull... You hear me apple?!)
    15'' MBP , 2.3ghz i7, 8gb ram, AMD Radeon HD6750 1024Vram
    Running:
    Windows 7 (Genuine) Ultimate, 64bit
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.1
    Bootcamp (latest update)
    No programs that effect brightness on either partition of my HD
    So, the problem:
    When I started using Win7 in bootcamp, I noticed that the brightness keys (I have fn+f1/f2/f3 etc option enabled, so I can use f1-f12 as they are ment to be used on a PC, and if I want to use them for their mac-function, such as brightness, I hold down fn and hit the key) sometimes did not work.
    I mean... The keys worked, I saw the sun with multiple boxes under it apear on the sreen, and go up and down, but the brightness did not actually change.
    My volume and keyboard-backlight ones work properly.
    I was wondering if there are certain drivers, etc I need to install in order to get my brightness to work properly.
    Also, a few observations: (and past attempts)
    -The display IS detected by Windows 7, and I can change the resolution, etc. Brightness control in Win7>Control Panel>Screen/brightness has no effect
    -Whenever I boot to windows, the brightness setting is always the same as what it was in Mac OS X before I restarted
    Anyway, I am posting now because the brightness control now does not work - ever.
    Hopefully one of you can help me fix this.
    Thanks,
    Aypolo
