  • [FIXED] kernel26-lts for Intel driver's conflict with KMS in kernel26

    Hi,
    I am running on a GM965/GL960 Intel video card. During the install (and later use) of Arch, I had to add i915.modeset=0 on the kernel line in grub when booting to get to a visible terminal; otherwise I used to get a blank screen after udev loaded. However, taking a leaf from Ubuntu on same laptop (and since most fixes for this issue recommended downgrading the kernel), I installed kernel26-lts. This works quite well with the latest xorg (1.9) and intel driver (2.12.0-3).
    kernel26 - 2.6.35
    kernel26-lts - 2.6.32-23
    1. Are desktop users recommended to use the LTS kernel?
    2. For certain components (Broadcom wi-fi), where I intend to install drivers from the AUR - will they work on LTS kernel?
    3. Is this a good strategy? I intend to keep kernel26 also on my machine and when the Intel issue gets fixed, I will switch back to kernel26.

    1. If it works for you, use it.
    2. There are -lts versions of some packages and compiling others against any supported kernel should be fine.
    3. Seems nice and simple.
    You can also try .34 version or the regular kernel.

  • LR3 Fix for Crash when using Develop Module

    Adobe tech provided the following fix for my system which crashed when switching to the Develop module.
    This is the  response I received from Adobe Tech.
    Recreating the preferences file corrected the problem.
    Their help was right-on and appreciated.

    Hi Ed,
    Thank you for getting back to us. I appreciate your promptness in
    responding to our email.
    The information provided was really helpful in understanding the issue.
    In order to resolve this issue I would request you to perform the below
    mentioned steps in order to resolve this issue:
    * Remove Lightroom beta from your system as you have the the full
    purchase version Adobe Lightroom 3.0 (Because there may be conflicts
    between the Beta Version and original product)
    * Try to create new Catalog with some new images and check if you are
    facing the same issue with Develop module.
    * Check if other functions are working fine like Slideshow, Print, Web.
    If the problem still exist after removing the Lightroom beta version
    from your PC, then perform the below mentioned troubleshooting steps:
    * Re-create the Photoshop Lightroom preferences file.
    Re-create the Photoshop Lightroom 3.0 and 1.x preferences files to
    eliminate problems that a damaged preferences file might cause. If you
    do not delete your 1.x preferences as well as your 3.0 preferences,
    other issues may occur.
    To re-create the Photoshop Lightroom preferences file:
    1. Quit Photoshop Lightroom.
    1. Rename the Lightroom 3 Preferences.agprefs file (for example, to
    Lightroom 3 Preferencesagprefs.old) and the Lightroom Prefere
    nces.agprefs file (for example, to Lightroom Preferences.old) in the
    Documents and Settings/[Username ]/Application
    Data/Adobe/Lightroom/Preferences folder.
    1. Start Photoshop Lightroom. Photoshop Lightroom creates a new
    preferences file.
    If the problem continues, the preferences file isn't the cause. To
    restore custom settings, delete the new preferences file and restore the
    original name of the previous preferences file.
    * Also Send us the Image size and format on which your are working in
    Lightroom hence resulting in this issue.
    This should resolve your issue. If it does, please let us know, however
    in case it does not; please revert with any new information that you
    might want to add which will help us in resolving your issue.
    You can also try referring to our knowledge base and User to User forums
    by clicking on the following links:
    Knowledgebase: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/search/index.cfm
    U2U Forums: www.forums.adobe.com

    Creating a new catalogue and importing the images does not resolve the problem.
    The problem is only occuring on a few images from a particular collection.
    Creating a virtual copy also will not edit in photoshop.
    Creating a virtual copy and reseting the develop settings will allow the ctrl-e command to work.
    However, manually re-applying the develop settings once again stops the ctrl-e command working.

  • Any fix for the "remembering passwords" problem with MAIL?

    I've been following the other threads on this topic. I am a new Mac user (all of 5 days) with 10.5.2 preinstalled on a macbook pro, so this is not a migration problem. Applecare has been unable to resolve the issue. My setup is a Verizon FIOS POP account. I've tried all the repairing, creating keychain suggestions. My incoming and outgoing accounts function properly, then they mysteriously forget the login credentials. Is there any fix for this, this seems absurd coming from a PC background? Thanks.

    I just signed up for FIOS and am not experiencing your problem (had enough other ones instead).
    Go to mail preferences ~ click on a mail account ~ click on the advanced tab. The only settings that worked for me were: port 110 SSL OFF, authentication: Authenticated POP (APOP). If I remember correctly when I first set this up another window opened and I typed in my password and never had to do that again.
    Hope this helps.

  • Fix for Safari 5 hanging up with loading pages

    After reading the other extensive threads on this topic, one of the articles linked in those threads that helped me the most is found here... http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
    The solution appears to be the DNS problem for many new Safari 5 users (if not most). The article linked above demystified DNS for me. I added the OpenDNS numbers in the windows entitled "DNS Server" at System Preferences > Network. Safari 5 on my computer now works at lightning speed. The added benefit to doing this is that it is much faster than my previous DNS servers, and it is more secure.
    I hope that Apple will spread the word about this simple and fast solution, because many Safari 5 users are very frustrated right now.

    I also have problem with hanging up freezing up and all the above and actually Safari 5 made my entire computer inclosing other browsers I use very slow now,
    so I hope Apple come up with a fast fix for this soon because a lot of people have problems I have three laptops in my family my kids tonight said they have the same exact problem as far as using the DNS that you were talking about I'm afraid that I would run into some security issues I am not sure if it is something Apple would also suggest to all the people that are having this problem. I have not seen any feedback yet on open DNS

  • Any fix for USB 3 port disconnects with Plugable GigE adapter on Yoga Pro 2

    Hi,
    Does anyone know if there is a fix intended from lenovo on this?
    Very pleased overall with my Yoga Pro 2, however one issue is that I sometimes need to use a GigE adapter and the Plugable USB3-E1000 I bought will disconnect periodically - mainly an issue when using the link heavily.
    It is acknowledged by plugable to be an issue:
    http://plugable.com/products/usb3-e1000 "There is known conflict with the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro’s USB 3.0 port and the USB3-E1000. Symptoms include sudden loss of connectivity and failing of transferring files across a network. The current workaround is to use the USB 2.0 port. We are working with ASIX and Lenovo to resolve this known bug."
    It transmits at about 1.5MB/sec on USB2 and 15MB/sec on USB3 so a clear preference to use USB3!
    Thanks
    Stuart
    PS RUnning windows 8. fully patched, have updated BIOS from 1.15 to 1.16

    If used an external USB Wifi adapter that worked fine (Asus).
    This Linksys should also work in the Yoga.

  • Fix for crash after opening Transitions Window?

    I am working on a small project with a few standard def avi files and some still jpgs. When I click on Window-->Transitions, PrE 8 crashes every time and I get the dialog box to send an error report to Adobe. This is under Windows 7 64-bit. I just upgraded but had the EXACT same problem running PrE 7 under Vista 64-bit. I am really that the upgrade did not fix it. Anyone have any suggestions to stop the Transitions Window from causing a crash? My specs are PrE 8, Windows 7 64-bit, 6 GB RAM, about 500 GB free HD space, Intel core i7-920 at 2.66GHz, 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4850 Thanks.

    Steve,
    Thanks for your prompt reply.  It has taken me a couple days to find the time to check out yours and others suggestions (I also posted this on Elements Village).  So, I believe the problem is solved, and was due to either too-large JPGs as you suggested or some wierd memory use by the Background Rendering (suggested on another forum) or a wierd mix of the two.  Here is what I did:
    To start:  I had the Original project which was about a dozen largish (appx. 2000x1500) jpgs and several avi clips totaling maybe 3 minutes.
    I made an Original-video only project by copying the Original project and simply deleting the jpgs.
    I made a Test project by saving a brand new project and putting in 2 largish jpgs and 1 short avi clip on a new timeline.
    I started with Background Rendering enabled (default).
    My crash was that when I went to the drop down menu and selected Window->Transitions, PrE8 would crash and close.
    First I checked that my Windows update and Quicktime are up to date (they are).
    The test project did not crash, even with the too large photos.
    The first time I deleted the photos from the  Original-video only project it crashed (yesterday).  But when I returned to it today I could not get it to crash at all (it sounds funny to say I was trying to make it crash).  So I figured great!  Then I resized my photos to 640x480, put them back in as a slideshow on the timeline and no problem at all--no crash.
    Then I returned to the Original project (video plus too large jpgs) and checked to see that it still was crashing with Window->Transitions (it was).  Then I disabled Background Rendering.  I saved, closed and reopened the project and tested.  It did NOT crash  with Window->Transitions with Background Rendering disabled, even though the jpgs were too big.
    I will also point out, that during this time, I discovered I could get to transitions via the orange Edit button->Transitions button in that upper right window, and this path did NOT crash in any project. I am new to Premiere Elements and am still learning how to do things so missed this alternate path the first go round.  Nonetheless, I still wanted to fix the Windows->Transitions crash issue so I do not have to remember to avoid it.
    In summary then, it appears that the the crash issue occurs when I had BOTH too-large jpgs and Background Rendering enabled.  By either reducing jpg resolution within the guidelines OR turning off the rendering, the crash issue was resolved.  (Although I will probably do both in future projects).
    Thanks for your help and, despite the annoyance, I see this experience has taught me several valuable things I can do to avoid crashes in the future.

  • Interesting Observation and fix for crashing while moving / trimming clips

    Since day one I have been plagued by STP crashing when I tried to trim clips or move them in time. Recently I noticed this only happens on projects sent to STP from FCP. New projects have never had this horrible symptom.
    So I copied all the assets of a project to the clipboard and pasted them into a new empty document and the problem went away. I needed to tweak the positions of some of the automation anchor points but that was minor.
    I just thought I'd share that with you folks. After this current project is complete I install FCP Studio 3 and the new STP. Maybe the bug is fixed in the new version.

    Nice workaround. Thanks for sharing it!

  • TIP: Fix for crashing iPods on (notebook) USB ports!

    I've read many stories here about iPods crashing on updates, or otherwise behaving unpredictable whilst connected to a computer. I also encountered such problems.
    Now I've found that, particularly on notebooks, there is an energy setting on the USB port(s) that is very likely to potentially cause problems if set incorrectly. This is especially true if USB-energy dependent devices like iPod are connected to it.
    To fix this, go to: system management -> computer management -> appliances -> USB controllers. There double-click on 'USB main hub' (or right-click and choose 'properties'). Next go to the 'energy management' tab and uncheck 'allow computer to switch off this device to save energy'. Repeat for every USB hub you may want to use for iPod or any other USB-energy dependent device. *
    Most likely this will fix any related problems.
    HTH!
    * NB: since my OS is in Dutch I've translated this into English myself. The exact terminology may therfore differ, but I'm sure you'll get the idea...
    PS: if this fix is helpful for many folks encountering these problems, perhaps the Admin or Mods can make it a 'sticky' topic to help new iPod owners in the future?

  • Auto-proxy via file broken? Fix for crashing Tweetie and iTunes

    After upgrading to 10.6, Tweetie and iTunes would crash on launch.
    I was using a proxy.pac file to automatically set up a proxy when I'm at home (I've got Squid running on my file server). Disabling this (System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies > Automatic Proxy Configuration) made them work again.
    I noticed slowdowns with Firefox and Thunderbird as well, hopefully disabling the proxy will fix that issue as well.
    Here's my proxy.pac file:
    function FindProxyForURL( url, host ) {
    if( shExpMatch( host, "*.local" ) ) {
    return "DIRECT";
    } else if( url.substring( 0, 6 ) == "https:" ) {
    return "DIRECT";
    } else if( isInNet( myIpAddress(), "10.0.0.0", "255.255.255.0" ) ) {
    return "PROXY10.0.0.12:3128";
    } else if( isInNet( myIpAddress(), "192.168.0.0", "255.255.0.0" ) ) {
    // It's there somewhere..."
    return "DIRECT";
    return "DIRECT";
    }

    Thanks for the thoughts.
    I'll look through both your suggestions.  It's not really what I'd call a split library, as the /media/music/... folder structure contains both the music files themselves and the iTunes Library folder.
    If the folder with the library files (normally iTunes) contains the designated media folder (normally iTunes Media) which in turn contains all media, including any iOS apps and clickwheel games, in any structure you like, then the library is portable. If it doesn't meet the criteria then it is split. Portability comes from the relative relationship between library location and media folder location. iTunes will adjust for a similar change in the root path to both that happens simultaneously, but otherwise expects media to remain on exactly the same path each time it runs.
    In context it would seem as if /media is your current media folder in which case moving the library files (see the tip) up to the root of the drive would make the library portable, if not consistent with the common names for the folders. Having accessed the library database at /iTunes Library.itl you should find that you can now close iTunes, change /media to /iTunes Media and reopen without breaking the library. You should then be able to close iTunes, create a new empty folder /iTunes, move the library files and media folder inside /iTunes and access the library at /iTunes/iTunes Library.itl. This would now be a completely portable library with standard names for the principal folders.
    iTunes for Windows doesn't provide access to the last known path of missing files so it isn't possible to use a simple string replacement technique to fix things up. If you were to use my script you'd probably need to run it against the media folders; Artists, Pop, Rock, etc. in turn, looking for the content located within each.

  • Known fixes for crash upon opening do not fix the issue

    Browser will not load, fixes from support page that apply do not rectify the issue. Am not well-versed enough to know if what I'm seeing in the report (crash ID below) is telling me what's going on. Can't even open Profile Manager without the same crash message appearing instead.

    Thank you so much, for once in my computer life I knew what the problem was, what caused it, why it was caused, what it did, what it made it do and most importantly how to fix it and to do it correctly and expeditiously. I can not Thank You all enough for all of the help! I also have Pogo mailed this to all on my friends list, where they have all learned as I have and have fixed theirs also. and the message is being spread. Thank You again, I just can not say it enough.

  • Where to Look for Crash Causes

    Hi,
    G5 for 3 years; rock solid. Don't recall installing anything unusual (other than Apple SW updates) but twice now in the last week I have retunred to the system after being at work to find screen turned off and fans at full pelt. In the early days when I had a couple of kernel panics I knew where to look for the logs. I havce investigated every log (from System Profiler) for both of these "meltdowns" but can't find any reference at all.
    How do I go about pinpointing the cause?
    David
    PS: Apologies in advance - cross posting in OSX and G5 because I don't know which is the most relevant?

    Just to answer my own question. Found this in system log, and these are the last entries before the reboot:

    =============================================
    Now, a couple of weeks ago I installaed a Lacie PCI Firewire 800 card and attached three Lacie FW 800 drives (previously these were all daisy-chained off the one FW 800 port on the G5 and have worked without issue for two to three years).
    Could these messages be a cause of the crash? Anybody know what they might mean?

  • Final CAT Pro Plugins Services cause shortcuts conflict with other softwares

    I just installed Final CAT Pro Plugins. They are useful but cause me an issue:
    Since they are based on Services OSx system, they remain active also in other programs, so that when I use, for instance, Logic Pro, I have some shortcuts which match the Final CAT Services ones, and in the moment I digit them for Logic use they don't work in Logic and moreover cause FCPX to launch.
    So.... How can I do? (Apart from changing the shortcuts....)

    Hi MN Studio,
    Thanks for this question. My name is Jeroen, I am one of the developers of Final Cat Pro. After we noticed your comments on this forum we decided to rewrite the services. We hope to solve this problem with the new release early next week.
    Actually, we have the beta version of the new release ready. If you are willing to try it, send me an email so you can test it and let us know if the problem is solved. You can send us an email via [email protected] or directly at [email protected]
    If the new software works out, I can send you the updated version if you want?
    Thanks,
    Jeroen
