Fix for Mavericks compatibility with Lacie external drives yet?

My last attempt to upgrade to Mavericks caused my 2 Lacie external drives to become unrecognisable to my mac. Update hung up too so I lost everything...luckily I had a third back up with CCC that saved me. Im just wondering if there is a fix for this now. I got no information or help from Lacie.

Exactly the same here. Installed Mavericks and La Cie no longer shows in Finder and Time Machine reminds me that no back up has taken place. As an iMac newbie where do I go from here. In my Win PC days I always backed up to an external HD on a scheduled basis without this sort of problem.

  • Fix for Blasting Fans with 10.4.4 yet??

    Hello everybody,
It's been a while since I've checked back at these forums, but I couldn't find a solution going over some posts today. My fans have been CRAZY since 10.4.3, and 10.4.4 didn't help one bit. They're fine when in Reduced settings, which is really lame, because i bought the G5 for its power. Highest has no crazy fans, but has the annoying chirps. Automatic was completely fine until 10.4.3, and I want to be able to use it again. So has anybody found a solution to this yet? (From Apple or personal solution). Also the fans seem to go most crazy with Safari or Firefox use.
    Thanks,
    -Burak

Oh geez, here I am back on the boards again. Guess I never should have installed Tiger yesterday on the G5 and did the 10.4.5 combo to catch up. Had been PERFECTLY happy with 10.3.9 on it. No fan revs, very low CPU loads, sleeps when it should, yadda, yadda. Tiger sat on the shelf from first day of issue until yesterday. Finally decided a mid version update on 10.4 should have things resolved. Oh well, the fans rev'ing again are a BIG disappointment Apple!! There is absolutely nothing wrong with this G5 dually and it performed out-of-the-box perfect since Oct. '03 on each of the last versions of Panther and Jaguar.
So I'm here to verify, indeed Apple has a software problem with the Fans rev'ing on my G5. And ALL the fan rev'ing problems in the past...i.e. Jaguar and Panther both....were resolved in software revision updates at some point in time without changing a single thing on this Mac, not software, hardware or firmware.
C'mon Apple, I DON'T want to wait until 10.4.9 to get this irratic, unpredictable, annoying, unjustified fan rev'ing problem fixed.

  • I have an issue with time machine, it doesn't find the Lacie external driver it use to use. it is the same drive that I usaly use for time machine back ups. It is corectly plugged. What can I do ?

    Hi,
I'm trying to back up my macbook with time machine on the Lacie external driver I usualy use for this, but today my computer doesn't find the driver. I haven't done back up in 6 month.
Today, the Lacie driver is pluged and running, but the computer just does'nt find it.
    what shall I do ?

    Some things to consider:
Is the drive mounted, i.e., visible via Finder and/or on the Desktop?
Is the drive still selected in System Preferences, Time Machine? If not, use the "Select Disk" button.
Is Time Machine still turned on (System Preferences, Time Machine)?
Can you see the drive (and mount it) using Disk Utility (in your Utilities folder)?

  • Kernel panics on LaCie external drive with Mac Mini

    Hi there.
I recently purchased a LaCie external drive to use with my Mini. My intent was to boot from the LaCie drive and use the Mini for backup. Everything was working well until I upgraded the LaCie drive to 10.4.6. I started to get a kernel panic once a day. I reinstalled the OS (I have disks up to the 10.4) but held off doing software upgrades so I could try to isolate the cause of the kernel panic. I couldn't. I currently get the panic notice every few minutes, regardless of the version.
I am planning on taking both drives to the Mac store on Monday, but am wondering what my options are. Is it okay to use the LaCie drive as my start-up or should I get a bigger drive installed in the Mini and use the Mini as my start-up instead?
Is there any chance I can solve this kernel panic problem on my own? Reinstalling, running disk utilities, etc hasn't helped.
Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   40 gig Mini plus 250 gig LaCie external

ok first off how big of external drive
the reason i ask is this
on some external inclosures designed for the mac mini exceed 120 gig to 220 gigs you will have some major issues one is kernal panic one is the mac os x desktop becomes unstable and certain applications will crash like utilitys and even system preferences
and your dvd software will also have trouble playing dvds
i ran into this on a g3 tower and the same thing happens on certain models of laptops but i have never heard of this happening on a mac mini this is a first

    no.

  • HT201250 If using Time Machine with an external drive, can I just use it occasionally for back up, say once per week and have it disconnected in between backups?

When using TM with an external drive, can I connect and use it occasionally for backup and disconnect it between backups, say one backup per week?  Or does it need to be connected all the time when the computer is on?

TimeMachine works better if it's nearly always connected.
For addtional backup like what your needing, consider a bootable clone in addition to TM.

  • How can i access my lacie external drive with os mountain lion

I have just upgradet my macbook pro from snow leopard to mountain lion, and now i can't restore my backed up files from my Lacie external drive.
When i try to connect to it through time machine or migration assistant i get the message:
"the version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported"
I have tried to enable all UAMs but i still can't connect.
I have browsed after other similar situations, but i can't seem to find any though i'm hardly the only one with this problem.

If the backup was made using time machine, you should be able to access any files you need or want manually using the finder. It may not be pretty, but it should work. I don't know why the migration assistant would be unable to access it though.
If you can't access the contents of the backup with the finder, then I would say your problem is a bit more serious.

  • LaCie external drives will not sleep

Why are my three LaCie external drives not going to sleep with the new OS X Mavericks?

The only problem I have, is I cannot even mount the drives to format them!
I have a feeling that the partition map is bad. Does the drive itself report to DU? If the drive does show up, you can select that, and click the Repair Disk button under the First Aid tab. If that doesn't fix it, with the drive selected, click the partition tab and re-partition the drive. After that, I would erase the newly created volumes with 1-pass/zero out option selected and restore the data that was on the external from TM.
If none of this works or if the drive itself (not the volumes) doesn't show up in DU, you either have a bad drive or bad controller in the external case. How old is the Ultramax? Just wondering if it might still be under manufacturer's warranty. I would check to see if you are still eligible from the manufacturer's warranty and get the whole external unit replaced. If you are out of warranty, I think it likely that you need to replace that external with a new one. I've had a drive go bad in an external case (this one I could still mount but the heads would 'freeze') and the controller on another external go bad (this one, the drive would not report to DU so I took the drive out of the enclosure, stuck the drive in another case and there was no problem with the drive.)

  • LaCie external drive data recovery in 10.5?

I purchased my iMac on Sunday. My 500GB LaCie Big Disk Extreme mounted in OSX v10.5 with no problems.
I was running 10.3.9 prior to Sunday, so I checked for updates to various applications, and found LaCie's Update Tool, Ver. 1.4.2.
Just as the 1.4.2 update was finishing, I received an 'unable to update firmware' message, and the drive has not mounted since. It shows up in both Disk Utility and System Profiler, but DU will not allow me to Verify or Repair. I moved the LaCie back to my old G4, and it would not mount there either.
I spoke to Apple Care this morning as well as LaCie's tech support. Both assumptions are that my LaCie external drive is corrupted, and in need of data recovery.
Apart from being bummed, I am confused by the yes/no postings for Disk Warrior and other such data recovery programs, in relation to 10.5 compatibility.
Any suggestions at this point would be welcome, as I'm lost without them.

It seemed to work for a little while. Under the CBR folder, there were 61 separate files of JPEG images alone. The first dozen or so seemed to come through alright, then I saw nothing but striated and partial (like 10% visible) images after that, no matter which of the JPEG folders I downloaded from.
I also tried to pick individual image files at random from any of the folders (both the CBR subfolders and the LaCie BigDisk Extreme Media subfolders) and everything I tried was mush. I utilized the recommended Allocation Blocks Layout settings (I have 7 settings available after my scan), and downloaded the same image 7 times with no success. One of the settings would give me a highly distorted image, and the other 6 came up unable to be opened.
I'm appreciating the encouragement here. I don't feel like giving up and walking away from this without a fight. I'm not wealthy, but I'm willing to spend some bucks to see this resolved without loss.
Any suggestions on data retrieval services?
I'm sorry to seem reliant, because I'm not well-versed with these things, but it's because I'm proud to say that I never had one single issue with my G4 over the course of five years of daily use.

  • How & why Record with an external drive?

Hi. Okay, in another topic I posted it was recommended that I record with an external drive and not the internal drive... I have a 7200rpm firewire 400 lacie drive... so how do record with it? Why and how will this improve my Logic Pro recording experience? I also have a FirePod firewire interface.
    Thanks,
    Bill K.

To record onto an external drive, simply go to the audio menu and choose "Set Audio Record Path..." From here set your recording path to be somewhere on your external drive.
In general, it best to record to a drive other than your system drive. Depending on what you are doing, the system drive can be writing/reading cash files, data files and doing other Logic/OSX related activities in the background, all of which slows down your disk. You of course can still use your system drive to access data, but because its doing other operations, you may not be able to run as many audio tracks at once as you could using a dedicated external drive.
Try both methods and see which works best for you and your system.

  • HT3275 Lacie external drive/Time Machine errors

I am using Lacie external drive with Time Machine and now have an "invalid node structure." Wants me to back up and restore...again. I have had problems in the past and have restored twice so far.  Other problems include "Incorrect number of thread records" and "Invalid directory item count." Why does this keep happening? Is it normal to keep restoring your external hard drive? Where else should I back up my hard drive?

    Terriodo wrote:
I wonder if this is a problem with Time Machine or my external hard drive.
Hard to tell, unfortunately.  As posted earlier, that can be caused by lots of things.
Our Lacie hard drive is backing up everything that is on our computer. Meaning there isn't anything getting backed up that has been deleted. But it is annoying to erase the darn thing every couple of weeks and load it all on again.
My advice would be to get another drive.  Since you have a desktop Mac, get a desktop drive, with it's own power supply.  Plug it (and your Mac) into a same good-quality surge suppressor;  or, better, U.P.S. (battery backup) system.
It's always prudent to keep secondary backups.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for an explanation and some suggestions.
That recommends using a different app, but in your situation, you might want to use both drives with Time Machine temporarily; you'll have to switch back and forth manually via the TM Preferences panel (Mountain Lion allows multiple destinations, but Snow Leopard doesn't).  If the new drive works fine, but the old one doesn't, that will implicate the LaCie, or it's connections, etc.
If you determine it's ok, then use one (probably the desktop) with Time Machine, and the Rugged with another app.  Consider taking it off-site, as mentioned in #27.
If it's not ok, replace it.
I am running 10.6.8 and have Lacie 1T Rugged external hard drive connected by firewire on my Mac desktop.
I have a smaller version of that drive, as do several folks here.  It gets good reviews, but like any drive, won't last forever.  If it's over about 3 years old, it could be starting to develop a problem.

  • G4 Won't recognize Lacie external drive

My G4 will not display/boot my Lacie external drive. I've used it for several years, so it has worked in the past. We had a power outage and after that it won't regonize the drive. I tested the drive on my Mac laptop and the drive works fine, just not on my G4. It powers up when I plug it into a G4 firewire port, but won't dsiplay/mount on the desktop. I tried rebooting everything and unplugging all other USB and Firewires from the back. No use. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hello! Try hooking it up to the book and repairing the drive in disk utility. Then dismount it and unhook it and turn off it's power. Then reconnect it to the G4 and then power it on. Sometimes this will get it to mount. There have been some LaCie's that have had problems with a weak power supply. Tom
