Fix for my Freeze

Yep, 1.2 struck me too. Frozen with a look of amazement that my IPOD had become a cool black paperweight.
The fix that worked was to find a previous version of the updater on my hard drive. Search for updated in Spotlight. A vast array of choiced awaited me.
Double clicked on the most recent non 1.2 version without attaching the IPOD.
The update announced that it was waiting for IPOD. I attached the IPOD which it recognized.
The only option in the updater that was highlighted was restore. I had nothing to lose, so I took a chance.
The IPOD went into restore mode and after it was restored, came back as a fresh as the day it was bought IPOD.
I reloaded my library and all my music and playlists imported without a problem. I followed the previous instructions to NOT update to 1.2 when prompted. I now have a working IPOD and a lot less sleep over the past few nights trying to figure this all out.
Waiting for 1.3 and a few weeks of all clear before I leap again. Good luck to everyone on this update **** cruise....smooth sailing for me....for now.

I'm glad it worked for you, but it's not working for me. I followed the steps you outlined, but once the iPod was plugged in, the message changed from "Waiting for iPod" to "More than one iPod is attached. Please attach one iPod at a time to be updated. Eject the other iPods using the Finder and then unplug them."
More than one iPod? I only wish!
The good thing is that if I unplug the iPod from my MacBook and reset it, it works fine. I just can't plug it in to recharge and or resync.

  • Fix for Safari Freezing Entire System

You can read the EXPLANATION or just jump right to the SOLUTION.
    EXPLANATION
So in the past two days my Safari started freezing after using it for a mere few minutes.  I'd get the spinning beachball and my system became unresponsive.   I couldn't force close anything nor could I even access the force-close window (command+option+ESC).
This problem was also affecting Apple Mail because it uses Safari/WebKit to preview HTML in the messages.
I tried repairing permissions, I tried disabling extensions, etc.  Nothing worked.  While I was doing this, I pulled my MacBook Pro out of my bag and started using it to try and get some work done in my office concurrently.  Well, all of a sudden IT started crashing with Safari as well!
This got my thinking, perhaps there was a bookmark or setting issue that was being synced via iCloud.  So I unchecked Safari sync from the iCloud Preferences panel and also inside iCloud Drive.
I then followed the instructions below, which basically removes all of my Safari prefs, bookmarks, etc and reverts it to a clean, pristine install.  Yes I lost my bookmarks.  I have backups and will manually add them again.  I've been using Pocket (GetPocket.com) anyway so no big loss to me.
Regardless, I've been using Safari for the past 30 minutes with my extensions re-installed and no freezing, no issues at all.
    Taken from: Reset Safari Settings/Preferences
Note: The following will make a backup of all of your Safari prefs and copy it to a folder on your Desktop.  It will then reset Safari to default.
    SOLUTION:
Open a terminal window and just copy/paste the following into the terminal window and press RETURN / ENTER:
    mv ~/Library/Safari ~/Desktop/Safari-`date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S`; \
    rm -Rf ~/Library/Caches/Apple\ -\ Safari\ -\ Safari\ Extensions\ Gallery; \
    rm -Rf ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari; \
    rm -Rf ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari; \
    rm -Rf ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess; \
    rm -Rf ~/Library/Cookies/Cookies.binarycookies; \
    rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/Apple\ -\ Safari\ -\ Safari\ Extensions\ Gallery; \
    rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.LSSharedFileList.plist; \
    rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist; \
    rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist; \
    rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.WebFoundation.plist; \
    rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.WebKit.PluginHost.plist; \
    rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess.plist; \
    rm -Rf ~/Library/PubSub/Database; \
    rm -Rf ~/Library/Saved\ Application\ State/com.apple.Safari.savedState
Hope this helps other folks until the actual culprit is identified.
    Best,
    M.

    UPDATE:
I copied my Bookmarks.plist file back to my Library/Safari folder from the copy that was created in the Safari backup folder on my desktop in the previous message.  Safari continues to work and I have my bookmarks back.

  • Fix for Gapless Freeze

For the Gapless problem. iTunes does not like multiple libraries. This worked for me:
Delete the iTunes preferences in user library
    remove plugins
    Restart
When you launch iTunes, hold down option key to create a new library. Follow directions.
Gapless analysis follows. MIne went through with no problem instead of freezing up.
I had to locate songs that were not added to the new library in the first go around, and use "Add to Library" two times to add all my songs to the new library. I had multiple libraries in my old iTunes. I found this tip on Ted Landau's MacFixit.com

I'm glad it worked for you, but it's not working for me. I followed the steps you outlined, but once the iPod was plugged in, the message changed from "Waiting for iPod" to "More than one iPod is attached. Please attach one iPod at a time to be updated. • FIX FOR:computer freezes during install of Leopard on a G4 MDD w/ ATI x800!

I had problems with freezing during installation of Tiger & Leopard on my G4 MDD. It took some trouble shooting, but when I installed Tiger I found out that the freeze was from the video card I had installed, an ATI x800 xt 256mb AGP video card. I do not know why this card freezes the installation process, but I found a way to get the installation to complete without freezing. I took an old ATI PCI video card, installed it in an empty PCI slot, connected monitor to PCI card, and then installed Tiger with no problems. After install I hooked the monitor back up to the AGP ATI card and it worked great. So when my G4 froze with the Leopard installation I did the same thing, switched to an old PCI video card and Leopard installed with no problems whatsoever, then I switched back to AGP card after install. I hope this helps someone.

  • Possible simple fix for Yosemite freeze/high CPU etc

Short version:  Update tom latest version of Dropbox client for OSX
    Description:
    Running OS X 10.10 on 2011 MBP w/ 840 EVO SSD
Everything was running great for a week or so, then started experiencing high CPU usage, and ultimately the system would stop responding.  Lot's of strange error messages in syslog brought me to the forums, but no answers.
Initially, I thought the trouble was caused by 3rd party kext's loading since I had disabled signing and forcibly enable trim.  In the end, I disabled trim and reset the driver signing to defaults and followed basic troubleshooting posted elsewhere here to regain control:
    Boot safe mode
    SMC reset
    PRAM reset
After this, I enabled trim, etc but ran into trouble yet again.  So I started looking at apps one at a time.  I downloaded and installed the latest Dropbox client, and everything has been great since.  I believe (in my case) the older version of Dropbox that had not been updated since Mavericks seemed to be the culprit.  I wrongly assumed that this couldn't happen due to Sandboxing, but I'm not a software engineer.
    Hope this helps.
    BKå

Unfortunately, this did NOT work for me. I am still stuck and have done everything. I lost my original user name and now have my long email address as my user ID... bummer. Also, I had a very simple password that I lost, too, because I was trying to reset things. Also, a big bummer!!'
This is day 4 for me now and I am still not able to use my credit card!!!

  • Potential fix for frequent freezes - spinning beach ball -  in all apps

I've had escalating difficulties over the past few weeks with frequent crashes. It started out that iTunes would pause suddenly in the middle of a song, and give me the spinning beach ball for 5-10 seconds before starting to play again; it then progressed to Safari doing the same thing when I tried to load process-heavy pages (I noticed it especially on pages with large animated ads). It got progressively worse, to the point where yesterday I had to force restart about fifteen times, and a couple of those were so bad that I'd have to re-restart five seconds after logging in.
Anyway, the upshot of all of this is that I tried various solutions I've seen around the boards - seems a bunch of folks are having similar difficulties - and so I tried a couple of the suggestions: repairing permissions; using Macaroni to do routine maintenance such as clearing logs & caches; running Disk Utility. I found that using a newly-created account got rid of the problem, so I figured there was some problem with my user account.
Well, I saw someone suggest in another thread dragging the Fonts folder to the desktop and restart; the next step in the process was to do the same with Preferences. I got into my library folder and found I had not one but two Fonts folders - seemingly identical in their contents (encodings.dir, fonts.dir, fonts.list, fonts.scale) and then a third folder with all the actual font files in it. Not sure how it happened that I had two Fonts folders, but I dragged both of them to the desktop and let the computer replace it upon restart.
And miracle of miracles, that seems to have solved the problem. Not sure if the computer was trying to look in the Library for fonts and getting confused by finding two identical files, or what, but hey, I can't complain.
So I thought I'd post this here in case it's helpful for anyone else!

  • Fix for iMessage banner notifications in iOS 8.1 freezing the keyboard or touch responsiveness?

Is there a fix for iMessage banner notifications in iOS 8.1 freezing the keyboard, and making the phone non-responsive while receiving messages?
    I have a Verizon iPhone 6 - 128gb Space Gray
While I'm receiving banner notifications for iMessage, my phone will lock up until the notification banner clears. If I'm in the middle of typing, the keyboard will lock up and then resume back to normal once the banner goes away. No matter what task I'm doing with the iPhone, it will freeze up until the notification goes away. The touch screen becomes unresponsive. To be clear, the banner notifications are not freezing themselves. They go away on their own. But while they come in, it renders the phone useless for that 3 second time frame.
The only temporary fix I've found for this issue is to turn off iMessage notifications all together, or just turn off banner notifications for iMessage. This has to be a software issue in 8.1 and needs to be resolved ASAP.
    I've troubleshooted every known possibility.
    * Reset network setting = Didn't work.
    * Reset all settings = Didn't work.
    * Wipe Phone completely and start as new (did not restore from back up) = Didn't work.
    * Restore as new from iTunes (did not restore from back up) = Didn't work.
    * Visited apple store and received a replacement = Didn't work.

Jeez, the keyboard lags behind so much and the keys seem offset

  • Definitive fix for revving fans/freeze?

Is there a definitive fix for the revving fan & freeze issues in the early edition G5s (dual 2Ghz)? Also, does the above mention problem have any relation to the defective video cards in the same machines? -- no video signal on cold starts. card needs to be warmed w/ a hairdryer before startup!
    15' 125Ghz pBook / Dual 2Ghz G5 / mini

    Hi
Dont know if this will help you but I had a problem of high revving noisy fans, then it wouldn't power up. I sent it away and the said it was due to a little white strip fixed on the bottom end of the cover, which apparently effects the air flow. It was starting to curl up, it was straightened out and the fans are now very very quiet and I have had no bother since, including powering up

  • Is there a fix for Mountain Lion audio output settings after the laptop goes to sleep and wakes back up?

Mac Book Pro running Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5 after the notebook sleeps audio and video does work (for example on YouTube).  I have been able to temporarily work around this by toggling the settings on Built-in Output in Audio Midi Setup, Audio window between 2ch-20bit Integer and 2ch-24bit Integer.  But this is a temporary fix until the laptop sleeps again.
When it's not working, all system sounds (emails "dings", delete file "swish", etc.) are silenced, and video playbacks on YouTube and elsewhere freeze and have no audio until the Audio Output settings are toggled then they all immediately start working.
Has anyone encountered the same?  Have a long term fix for this annoyance?

  • A few small issues I can't find fixes for

Hi everyone, I've been using arch for a little bit now and really enjoying the experience. I have run across 3 small problems and other than that everything thing seems to be running flawlessly. I'd appreciate any help with these, and thanks in advance. I have googled trying to find solutions and searched the wiki but either none of the issues were listed or the fixes for them didn't seem to have an effect, but if I missed something sorry, just if you want to point me in the right direction that'd be appreciated.
So some specifics about my system first, I'm running on arch linux 64bit using KDE as my desktop environment.
    Okay so problem number 1:
Sometimes when arch goes to boot it fails to mount /dev/sda2 which is my root partition, This doesn't happen everytime but I'd say 50 or 60 percent of the time, but when it does I give it a restart once or twice and it loads into arch just fine. I can restart my computer if anyone wants the exact wording I get, but it goes along the lines of "failed to mount /dev/sda2 you are now being dropped in to a recovery shell" Now I'm not sure but this might be because of the weird way I set the harddrive partitions up, but it worked in all the distros I used before settling on arch, but to give you an idea, I'm using 2 300gb hard drives, I have them split so that 1 hard drive is completely devoted to my / and /boot partitions, the other one has /usr /tmp /var and swap on it. In addition I have a 1tb drive for storage that is devoted to /home. If it is causing the problem and I have to reformat and go to a more conventional partition scheme I will, but I'd prefer to avoid that if at all possible, just because I am rather settled in to this install.
    Problem number 2:
Amarok takes forever and a day to load, somewhere in the area of 60+ seconds, when I start it via the terminal I get this output:
KGlobal::locale::Warning your global KLocale is being recreated with a valid main component instead of a fake component, this usually means you tried to call i18n related functions before your main component was created. You should not do that since it most likely will not work

I thought maybe it was the gstreamer backend because the wiki said it might cause problems and to try using xine instead. However doing this didn't seem to help at all.
    Problem number 3
Flash is all weird when I use Kwin, when I use compiz it works near flawlessly but my issue with that is then kde doesn't act nearly as smooth as it does without compiz. When I use flashplugin from the repos I can't go fullscreen because it makes everything freeze up, and when I try flashplugin-prerelease from the aur flash is always in the spot where it loaded meaning if I change tabs in firefox it goes through the other tab and if I scroll it stays stationary and everything else scrolls behind it.
Again I apologize if I missed it in the searches that I ran and these have been solved elsewhere, but thanks in advance for all help given.
Edit: Installing pulseaudio and using that instead of alsa seems to have fixed amarok starting slowly.

milomouse wrote:Maybe you should use UUIDs instead of /dev/sd* to avoid any possible device confusion (type 'blkid' to see your UUIDs), though from your first post about "cannot mount /dev/sda2" it still appears to check for root device correctly.  At any rate, in your grub or lilo or syslinux (whatever bootloader you have) config you could also change root=/dev/sda2 to root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/YOURROOTUUID (however your bootloader can handle it) to help further reduce possible errors.  (helpful link: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pe … ice_naming )  Trying to think of what else it could be since it only happens every now and then, which is a little strange.
Oh my bad I forgot to say I'm using grub, but yeah I went through and did that, That seemed to stop me being loaded into a recovery shell or whatever, but when arch started to boot about 2 out of the 5 times I restarted to test it, it said file systems didn't check and had my log in as root to try to remount the partition. Also I got a COMERROR=-32 after which it said it was doing a comreset and would retry in 8 seconds after doing that 3 times it booted almost every time unless it ran into the filesystem check.

  • Here's a fix for Safari hanging and taking down the system..

There appears to be a serious bug in Mac OS X's lookupd which can pull the rug right out from under Mac OS X Tiger. While this bug could possibly be triggered in a number of different ways, there has been a recent rash of reports that have been tracked to some mainstream Web sites such as FoxNews.com using links to an adware site js.adsonar.com. This document describes a quick way out of the hang and a simple way to block links to js.adsonar.com from taking down Tiger again. While this doesn't fix the underlying lookupd bug itself, it prevents Mac OS X from hanging, while allowing you to continue using Web sites like FoxNews.com with full Java and JavaScript access enabled.
The symptoms of this problem are as follows:
    • You're surfing the web and the page you are on fails to completely load.
    • No further pages will load in your browser.
    • You can switch to other applications that may already be running and save any open files.
    • You can no longer launch any additional applications, their icons will bounce in the dock for a while and then they will just stop bouncing.
    • You can no longer use any other Finder functions.
    • You can no longer use command-option-escape to force quit.
    • You can not log out, restart or shut down.
Apparently these symptoms indicate that a low-level component of Mac OS X, lookupd, has hung. Since lookupd is used by many other parts of Mac OS X, it effectively hangs Mac OS X itself.
If this sounds like a problem you are having, try the steps in the following link to fix it.
Mac OS X Tiger lookupd bug & adsonar fix

    Hi Bee,
There is indeed "such a bug", though you may be fortunate enough to not be affected. Unfortunately MANY others are affected by this. I spent three days helping track this down (many of those 38 posts were while tracking it down in the Tiger discussions) and find a fix to this and thought that others might benefit by my efforts... By the way it's NOT a Safari bug, it happens in any browser, it's a "lookupd" bug which may be triggered by surfing to certain sites which contain links to "js.adsonar.com", which if you have JavaScript enabled can hang lookupd and take down your entire system... consider yourself lucky that it hasn't happened to you...
Here is some background information if you don't believe me:

I only posted this fix to the specific threads where people were having Safari hang, incase it might help them. Forgive me for trying to help them... I thought that was the point of these boards and that was why they started threads about their issues... I'd be willing to bet that this fix will indeed fix many of their problems...
I also posted one additional new topic here on the Safari board and one on the Tiger board for new readers looking for solutions to the same system hangs they may be getting while surfing.
If this fix does indeed help any of you other readers, please post back here so that Bee can indeed see that I'm not just posting here to waste my time...
