Fix for Shuffle on XP Machines

I, like many others, had the problem of my Shuffle no longer being recognized on any of my computers. The PC would load the device as a drive letter but, I could not access it with Itunes or Win Explorer. The tunes I had on the shuffle would still play fine. No error codes on the flashing light.
I went through all the trouble shooting steps on the site. If you haven't done that, you should before you do the following.
After a frustrating call to tech support... Phone & Chat is only available for for the first 90 days...Buy a $60 plan for a $99 device just to answer a simple question ?????
Anyway, I didn't want to go through the hassle of sending it in. Especially if they decide they need $100 to check it out. (read the fine print on the service agreement) These are the steps and now I'm back in business.
Caution: I'm an experienced PC user. This worked for me and my Shuttle. You might not have the same results. I can't help but wonder why this solution wasn't posted on the support site...
1. Re-format the Ipod. (remember it is really just a flash drive)
XP Home Edition
- Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools,Computer Management,Storage,Disk Management.
In the right panel you will see your drives listed. Right click on your Ipod and select "Format". When it asks, you want a basic partition and FAT32 as the file system. After the format is complete just close the window and eject the shuttle using the "safely remove hardware" button.
2. You will need to re-initialize your Shuttle with Itunes.
- Follow the same exact steps you did when you first got it using the CD that came with it.
- Or download the newest update of Itunes from the Apple site and go through the steps.

Hope others have the same luck I had.

Windows XP SP 2: 1GB Ipod Shuffle
Initial symptoms of my ipod were a blinking battery light when plugged into my computer. It acted as if it were set up to be partial disk and partial music in that it would pop up a new drive window when plugged in. After your fix it started to accept music again. but itunes would fail to import all the songs at a random point. sometimes 3 songs into my list, sometimes 10(the songs would play). looking at the ipod as itunes failed, it was as if the power dumped. would turn off then back on again, windows would lose the hardware device then find it again. I have done the ipod restore and update several times. done the disk manager format. nothing has worked completely.
your method was most productive. Thanks for your input. hope my additional info serves as some sort of diagnostic. I have resigned to dealing with tech support. had my shuffle less than 2 weeks and i fear it has fried part of its circuitry. maybe 1gb memory runs too hot and burns out - just speculating however
[edit]
after this post i went into options, changed the ipod to "enable disk use" ran the slider to some random point. hit okay let the changes take effect, then i disabled drive support and hit okay again. seems to work a bit better now. but the drive window still pops-up on plugin. still sees shuffle as a flash drive so i need to manually unplug. takes my whole playlist now though.

  • Fix for owners of Desktops and Laptops for Time Machine Wirelessly

    Hey guys,
I have a fix for you to use which works well for me. Thus far I have had zero problems with it, was even able to allow a full 50 GB backup over wireless (took forever, but its the principle of it) as well as incremental backups. It requires NO terminal or any other stuff, just clicking around in the interface. Here's the steps I went through:
1.) Connect the Time Machine External Hard Drive to your desktop mac (any method, firewire preferred).
2.) Connect and establish the time machine drive as a time machine backup drive on your desktop. Allow the desktop to sync and begin its backup to the drive.
    3.) Open your laptop
    4.) Open finder
5.) Go to the "Shared" Section on the sidebar
6.) Find your desktop mac, connect to it as a full user (not a guest)
7.) Save the password, and make sure you have full access
8.) Find the external Time Machine Drive on your desktop's "Shared" Menu (Should be the bottom folder, will have a "Web Globe" On it
    9.) Click the folder
10.) An eject symbol should appear next to the Time Machine External Drive Folder on the desktop section (If you are in column view in Finder)
11.) The drive should appear in your "Devices" Tab on the sidebar
    12.) Open Time Machine Preferences
    13.) Turn on Time Machine
14.) Select your drive from the list (should just be one)
15.) Allow the initial download to commence (upwards of 5 hours)
After the initial backup, incremental backups aren't noticeable. In fact, clicking on the Time Machine icon in the dock will "search" for the backup drive even if you don't have it mounted from the beginning. Just make sure your desktop stays on when your laptop is on so that it can backup. I haven't noticed any lag in my internet either. Good luck, let me know if there are problems or if this works for you too.
    My specs:
    iMac G5 (iSight) 20" 10.5
    Macbook (White) 10.5
External Hard Drive: Western Digital MyBook, 500GB Firewire 400/800/USB

Edit: these are steps for making TM work with EHD attached to AEBS- not what I am saying we should do. BUT the step concerning "supported" drives might help alleviate unrecognized drives.
Quoting this from Mac-Forums (which quoted from Apple forums I guess):
    "Another post:
From user A@ron posted in MacRumors:
TM working with airport disk in GM
Well thank me later I got it working fellas. It was there in front of our faces with the exception of doing a chown and chmod.
Someone else please confirm I will post steps.
    1) disconnect airport disk and plug into computer as a USB drive directly.
    2) Set up time machine to use this volume.
    3) In terminal cd to volume "cd /Volume/HDD"
    4) In terminal "touch .com.apple.timemachine.supported" this will create an invisible file.
    5) In terminal "sudo chown root:admin .com.apple.timemachine.supported"
    6) In terminal "sudo chmod 1775 .com.apple.timemachine.supported"
    7) In terminal "ls -l -a" the .com.apple.timemachine.supported file should be -rwxrwxr-t
    8) eject disk, unplug from mac, plug into Airport.
    9) mount at mac using connect to server in finder (command k) and afp://airportname.local./HDname
    10) see if time machine now sees the drive and tries to use it.
    Best, Fernando"
Might work if you can't get TM to recoginize your drive. Could try the:
    " In terminal "ls -l -a" the .com.apple.timemachine.supported file should be -rwxrwxr-t"
command. I dunno though. Patience is a virtue.

The error that I am getting is this "Time Machine can't use the disk image because it can't be written to."  Any ideas on the fix for this?  When I go to the Time Capsule my Macbook Pro shows that it is locked, I think I did something wrong, but can't figure how to unlock it to see if that fixes it.

As far as we know, Time Machine cannot write to a disk image. It needs to write directly to the Time Capsule disk.

I recently updated my 20-inch, Mid 2007 iMac with the latest OS 10.8.5 now my external hard drives will not show up. They show up when I boot them up on a machine running and earlier OS. Is there a fix for this?

Can you see them in Disk Utility?
If so, can you select and Mount them?
If not, disconnect them, reset the iMac's SMC and then reconnect them.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
If you still can not see them, connect them back up to the iMac running the older OS, open Disk Utility and look to see how they are partitioned and formatted.

  • When I press any of my music lists to "Shuffle" it will not shuffle but just repeat the 1st song played. Any fix for that? Thanks. HMK

When I press any of my music lists to "Shuffle" it will not shufle but keeps repeating the same song first played. Any fix for this? Thanks, HMK

When you get to "Now Playing", tap once on the artwork in order to see the timeline of the playing song.  Look on the left side, the repeat one button is probably active.
Tapping once this icon bring the repeat option, tapping again will bring the repeat one option.  There you can also tap the shuffle button on the right.

Your machine is slow because you loaded a bunch of third party junk on it.

  • How do I restore the settings for apps using Time Machine?

I believe there are problems with items within the Library Folder inside the System Folder.  For example, there are two "Frameworks" Folders, but one has "(from old Mac)" after its name.  I dare not try to remove or even move either.
Back in the day of OS 9, you could modify something, then search for it by "Last Modified" Date, and find where Apple has hidden itscontents.  It's not so easy in OS X.  I've had some success using Pondini's Time Machine FAQ's, though.  Here is how I got to this problem:
Our family MacBook died.  After getting a repair estimate of $500 to $700 "if it's the Logic Board," we decided to replace it.  We purchased a MacBook Pro running Lion.  (Later, we brought it to an Apple Store and were quoted $435 in house or $280, but they would have to send it out.  Incredible repair: Logic Board, Top & Bottom Case, Super Drive, Battery, all for $280.  No wonder they're #1).  I pulled the Hard Dive out, erased it, and installed an older operating system, but during the repair they installed 10.6.
Restored the MBP from the TM backup of the MacBook. OK
The Macbook is repaired and the store showed me how to restore the data from the TM backup.
Restart and the passwords do not work due to restoring a 10.6 machine from a 10.7 backup.
Tech support guides me through resetting an admin password using the password utility on the install DVD.
changed the other passwords inside of Accounts in System Preferences.  Then changed the password or the other Admin.
Restart, get a circle with a line through it.
Tech support guides me through fixing this.
Restart, half my Apps do not work.
Tech support says to re-install 10.6.
I did but I thought it would erase and install but it just re-installed 10.6.
Most Apps work, except iPhoto.  Mail is OK sending but only receives on one of 3 accounts.
Is there a fix for iPhoto & Mail?  If not, I would plan to erase and use the finder to drag the user folders from TM to the MacBook.  Can I just drag the Apps too?  How about all of the settings for those Apps?

If you don't keep a backup, you can't restore your machine to any state except the state in which you received it, brand new, with none of your own stuff on it. That makes a pretty convincing argument for backing up, doesn't it?

  • Is there a fix for skipping or repeating songs, or for the voice over to come on without pushing any buttons?

Is there a fix for skipping or repeating songs, or for the voice over to come on without pushing any buttons?
I only use this 5th generation Shuffle when I run. I don't have headphone issues because I use running headphones meant to handle sweat. However, my Shuffle will, halfway through a song, go back to the beginning, play a few seconds and jump back to the beginning again. Also, when this starts happening, the Voice-over comes on again and again with no buttons being pushed. I keep the Shuffled clipped to the waistband of my running shorts, so it probably does get a little sweatty, but not like it would if it were clipped to the collar of my shirt!
Is this a problem I'm going to have to live with? I never had this issue with my old Shuffle, which was the first of the clip-on Sheffles.

    Hi punisherbv,
Are you using the beta? it's not fully secure, so try using Firefox 3 instead. If you are already using Firefox 3, it seems like what Firefox is saying is correct- the site is not supplying identity information. So what you could do is go to that exact site, then click on the little golden lock at the very corner of the page. Then, enter the 'permissions' tab and allow everything. Exit, and then try bookmarking the page!

  • Any fix for touch pad issue in mac book pro on windows 7?

Hi, I've recently installed windows 7 and parallels in my mac book pro. While i run windows with the parallels track pad, scrolling and right click are functioning properly. But when i logon to windows directly none of them are functioning.
Pls lemme know if there is any fix for this.
    Thanks

Running Windows in parallels from the BootCamp partition messes the original installation. My experience. You will have to remove the parallels virtual machine from mac and did a complete reinstall of Windows later. It is better to keep your virtual machine separately.
This is not true. Running Bootcamped Windows from Parallels or Fusion does not impact the Bootcamp installation of Windows. It just provides a different access to the single Windows installation. Both Parallels and Fusion support this configuration and instructions for how to use Bootcamped Windows as the virtual machine's tartget operating system is included on each virtual machines's respective site.

  • 4K TV not recognized correctly: MacBook Pro Mid2014 15" reports a Samsung UE40HU6900 4K TV as 8K (7680x4320). This results in an ugly, washed out image half the size it should be. Is there a fix for this? (OSX 10.10.1)

    MacBook Pro Mid2014 15" reports a Samsung UE40HU6900 4K TV as 8K (7680x4320).
This results in an ugly, washed out image half the size it should be. If you turn off scaling everything is tiny as 8K are displayed on a 4K screen. To get the actual 4K resolution you have to turn on scaling. Still 8K is transferred to the device, but doubling the data lines makes the picture look washed out and create obscure effects for line borders.
Did anybody encounter this problem before? Is there a fix for this? (OSX 10.10.1)

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Chess game in Mac OS X is there a bug fix for it

This is not a major issue but I have noticed it on all the Apple computers I have played the Chess game that comes with the Mac OS X and it seems to only involve the Pawn making an illegal move when capturing another piece. As we all know the Pawn can only capture by one space in a diagol move yet the Mac OS X supplied Chess game a Pawn will and can often capture an opponents piece that is directly next to it, yet still moves in diagnol fashion and for the same token this illegal move can is sometimes offered to me if I ask for a move hint. This is very frustrating as I play the supplied chess game often is there a fix for this bug

    Hello again Daniel...
I found a thread where "cornelius" suggested corrupt preferences as a potential cause for Chess problems...
His solution was to go to your Home > Library > Preferences and drag your com.apple.Chess.plist to the DeskTop and Restart your computer and reopen the Chess game...see the link

  • Fix for Black Screen on MBP 3,1 - Still under 10.5.7 - 30 Hours later & OK

    All,
I have no idea if my fix will work for you and I have no real idea why it worked - But it has worked for me and at this moment in time (touch wood) it has been stable for 30 hours and everything runs really well - even VMWare Fusion using a Boot Camp partition... No waking or rebooting issues at all. And believe me I have done a lot of them to make sure.
Have a read and see if this is something you want to try - As my machine is business critical, I am breathing easy now as I desperately needed this week (same last week, but let's just live with it). Obviously, this is about as unofficial as you can get and please bare in mind I am a photographer, not a techie. But, for what it is worth, if there is something that you can gleam from what I did to help you get back up and running, I'll be a happy chappy...
I posted it here so it is central. http://blog.ginkgostudios.com/2009/05/just-a-note-of-caution-this-worked-for-me- i-hope-it-works-for-you-but-obviously-i-cant-guarantee-that-i-just-thought-i-wou .html

    teamtomsk:
The comment in the linked blog about there being no software fix for this refers to a known hardware problem with certain MacBook Pro computers shipped with a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor. Read MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues to learn more about this.
If your (or any other user's) MacBook Pro is one of the ones shipped with a prone-to-failure 8600M GT graphics processor, it should be checked at an Apple Retail Store or Authorized Service Provider, whether or not Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) -- which seems to be what you did -- temporarily fixes it.

  • Fix for iTunes and Stuttering Audio Upon Opening Other Programs

This was answered for me in another mega thread, so I thought I would create it's own topic in hopes of helping as many people as possible.
This is a fix for those that have the problem of iTunes 7 working fine alone, but when opening another program such as a game, etc., iTunes 7 begins to stutter and crackle. This fix assumes that otherwise, the program works correctly (gapless, and other issues are not a problem, no blue screens of death, etc.)
    First off my machine:
Dell XPS 3.4 ghz Pentium Dual Core
    2 Gig RAM
Creative SB X-Fi audio card, latest drivers installed
    Observed problem:
Running iTunes 7, audio sounded fine, but opening another program such as UT2004 (first person shooter game) caused iTunes 7 to stutter and crackle.
This was not an issue in iTunes 6.05. I had to upgrade as I just purchased the new Nano.
As an aside, I have another sound card on my computer, an older Layla Echo 24 professional soundcard, drivers are about 3 years old. When selecting this card, this problem does not occur.
    The Fix:
    Close iTunes 7
Upgrade your sound card drivers (just to eliminate that as an issue)
Upgrade to latest Microsoft direct X version:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A -9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en
    Start
    Run
    Type: dxdiag
Click "sound 1" or similarly named tab
Slide bar to "basic acceleration" (mine was at full, and basic is two clicks to the left)
    Exit
Restart iTunes 7, and startup music
    Open game, or other program
Your music in iTunes 7 should now be stutter/crackle free
This may not work for everybody, but it worked for me so I thought I would pass this along.
    Good luck!
(resisting urge to type some snarky remark to Apple that somehow their programmers are indeed as human as Microsoft programmers)...oops...sorry about that.

i was hopeful, but it didn't work. well teh one thing that i had to do diff was the dx updating, WGA doesn't like to work on my system for some unkown reason (yes it was bought at a store) so i found a way around their WGA check for it (i think) the one i got was labeled as dxwebupdate for august 2006. it updated just fine and it looks like it should be the same one as the newest update release microsoft sent out
my system is a home built one and haven't had probs with itunes with any other version, until this one. i'm tempted to just go back to the newest version 6 i have, cause this is rediculous. i can't do anything without it sputtering away at me. i tryed uninstalling it and removing every trace of its exsistance off of the system (including registry) and that didn't work i made sure all numbers were set to the correct values for my sound blaster audigy gamer, i was using some non oem drivers, but switched over just to make sure witht eh newest ones creative had, and it made zero diff.
i'm wondering if it is an issue it is having with sound blaster cards...
well anyways if anyone else has any ideas i would like to hear them

Pearson put out a tech note on this today - the new versions of Java are what's causing the problem. If you can use Time Machine to rollback java prior to a java 7 or 1.6.0_37 version that will get you going again. I've been searching for hours for a place to download the older version but it seems Apple's site and Oracle all only have the latest release. Still trying to see if I have a copy downloaded on a system that hasn;t been updated to copy off to a network drive or usb and install the older version on to systems.

PowerTeacher Gradebook and recent Mac OS X Java update
An update to Java for Mac OS X was released on October 16, 2012. An issue has been identified with this Java update (Java for OS X 2012-006) which prevents teachers from launching PowerTeacher Gradebook.
Teachers using PowerTeacher Gradebook should avoid taking this Java update to version 1.6.0_37 until notified that PowerTeacher Gradebook has been certified with this latest version of Java 1.6 for Mac OS X. PowerTeacher Gradebook will continue to work on Mac OS X workstations with Java version 1.6.0_35.
Additional communication will be provided once a workaround is identified or an updated version of PowerTeacher Gradebook is available.
