Fix for slow-as-hell refurb ThinkPad Twist S230u

I recently got a refurbished ThinkPad Twist, and I was having issues with lagging - everything was taking forever, both web-based and local. Kept monitoring performance and nothing seemed amiss with memory or processing, nothing wrong with my internet connection. After a little digging I found that using Lenovo Solution Center solved my problem - it prompted me to update the BIOS, there was some kind of update related to power management, and there were some Windows patches. As soon as I did that everything was running as smooth as silk. Seems a little shady the refurb people wouldn't have done those updates since they came out before I got the laptop, but whatever, just glad I got it solved. I thought I was going to have to try a factory reset but no!
I just wanted to share here since I spent a ridiculous amount of time winding my way through the labyrinthine Lenovo website, when all I had to do was go to Start and type "update." So if, like me, you're pissed off that your brand-new-to-you machine is faulty, do yourself a favor and try that first and see where it gets you.
You can also do a hardware scan through Lenovo Solution Center - which it seems like if you just got a refurbished machine and the hardware scan didn't come out clean that would be a tip-off that they didn't do their due diligence in testing it.

Thank you.  I bought my Twist brand new and it has always run slowly until now thanks to your post.  I really appreciate it.

  • ThinkPad Twist s230u cursor flashing

    Hello,
I own a thinkpad twist s230u (3347 4HU) purchased 3 weeks ago. From the moment I turned it on, it has a major issue. The cursor goes on the right side of the screen, it flashes and it opens windows and applications itself whether it runs on desktop or on tablet mode. The problem appears every time I use the laptop and I can’t do anything. I can’t  write text anywhere due to the cursor flashing. Also most of the times that cursor flashes, the screen jitters too! I updated the bios system to 1.57 version so as most of the rest software including Atmel touch controller firmware update tool, Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver, Auto Scroll Utility and many others. I also ran linux ubuntu from a usb flash memory but the problem still existed. So it is not a windows 8 or a driver failure. I noticed that few times when i  turn around the screen or I change screen’s angle, then the problem temporarily subsides for less than a minute. I am very disappointed and frustrated. I never expected to buy a Lenovo product with such a problem.
    Could anyone help me?
    Solved!

I have the same issue, on a brand new Twist.  So this is not some isolated occurrence.  It's a serious problem.  Could someone from Lenovo please respond regarding a fix or plans to address this?

  • ThinkPad Twist s230u and ThinkPad x201 Tablet Creating Recovery Media

    Hi Lenovo Customer Support,
    ThinkPad s230u( model number: 3347CTO) - Window 8 Pro.
Before I start using my Laptop, I want to create a Recovery Media as is shown when installed with all partitions. Meaning if I format all contents of Laptop I want a recovery Media brings back computer as I go it in the first place include all partitions. By default there are five hidden partition and one ntfs.
What is the procedure how to Create a Recovery Media? I heard only Flash Recovery exist for Window 8.
Also I have Window 8 Pro but when I tried this link procedure http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/Create-Win-8-recovery-media-in-ThinkPad-Thi... I saw only Window 8 option and even then it reboot and did not work.
Also I did Flash Recovery and Took Faster with USB 3.0 Flash around 10 min around 16GB Space
Is it possible to do CD Recovery too ?
    ThinkPad x201 Tablet(Model Number: 30933PG) - Wundow 7 Pro
Can you do Flash Recovery Media and CD Recovery Media under Window 7 Pro  Enviro.
If you upgrade Hard drive to 1T and RAM to 16 G RAM  , Can you Still do the Recovery Media?
What is the Procedure to successfully create Recovery Media.
    Thanks.
    saad

    Reasons am asking this questions:
Sometime you test your computer doing a lot of things learning new technologies etc and suddenly you decide ok I want to take it back to factory state. Until now, most Thinkpad laptop does not come with recovery media. So how can I assure that my Recovery Media includes everything I used to have when I first receive unit.
I want to learn how to do that by myself by learning from the experts.
Until now what I know as follow:
    ThinkPad x201:
I tried recovery media  3 DVD only with original hard drive works. I did not try Flash and not sure there is option yet.
If I upgrade unit with 1T hard drive and 16G Ram, How can I do Recovery Media?
    ThinkPad Twist s230u:
I tried Flash and followed procedure on link in previous post. I took me less than 15 min to recovery whole. The question is does this process recover all the parts that is included when I receive unit.
I was unable to do recovery since I am not sure when in the Flash and during process showed to choose operating system was only Window 8 option not Window 8 Pro which came with unit.
I was able to do reset within system took longer and worked.
Is the recovery part build-in in the hardware or software partition? Is it included in the recovery Flash with all partitions?
Thank You. Awaiting for anyone to reply.

  • Thinkpad Twist S230u: Install clean Windows 8

    Hello Together,
I got a new Lenovo Thinkpad Twist S230u and want to install windows 8 without all preinstalled Software.
But i cannot find any Recovery Disc/Partition and there is no Registration Key for Windwos 8 in the Package....
So, how can I extract the clean Windwos 8 Image to take it on an USB Stick and how do i get the Windows 8 Key?
It used to be so easy....
    Thanks for your Help!

    Hi bigwig,
I'm not quite sure what you want to do, but if you are looking to do a clean install without the Lenovo pre-installed software, you are headed down the wrong path.
Here's how you make a copy of the recovery image to USB flash drive.  That can be used to restore your Twist to factory state.  Factory state includes the pre-installed software too.  There isn't a "naked" Win 8 image anywhere on the machine, as far as I know.  Only the full  Wind 8 + Lenovo recovery image.

  • Fix For Slow Printing To IPP Printer Pool

Here's a fix that might help someone out there:
I have a printer pool with two HP Laserjet printers that's shared via IPP on an Xserve running Mac OS X Server 10.5.
One of the printers is offline with a fuser error, so as expected, the server is sending all jobs to the other printer; however even small jobs are now taking an extra 1-2 minutes to get to that printer. Before one of the printers went offline, small jobs would print almost instantaneously.
Since printing speed was normal for other, non-pooled printers shared by the server, I figured the delay was probably related to the server taking too long to decide that the offline printer was actually offline.
I figured that the fastest way for the server to determine that a pooled printer is busy is when it has a job in its queue waiting to print. So, I logged into the server and sent a job directly to the offline printer's queue; the job will just sit there and won't print, but the server will think the printer is busy.
That eliminated the delay. It's annoying that the delay is there at all, since the whole point of the printer pool is too have redundancy if one printer runs out of paper or malfunctions. If anyone has any ideas on a more concrete way to eliminate this delay, please share them.

    Hi,
Do the programs freeze for about 2 minutes each time when attempting to print something?
Do we use spooling?  If not, we can enable the setting
Spool print documents so program finishes printing faster and its sub-setting
Start printing immediately to see if it helps.

  • Potential fix for slow/unreliable network on Macbook Air running Mavericks

    Hi all,
I work in IT support at University of Manchester, UK and have found a fix for for network issues we were experiencing with Macbook Air laptops running Mavericks. These Airs were having issues connecting to our WiFi and experiencing slow downloads, even when switched over to UBS LAN adaptors.
Anyhow, after trawling these forums without success I stumbled upon this solution myself so thought I'd share:
Basically, if you are experiencing speed/connection issues go into the 'Advanced' network settings and change the IPv6 setting from 'Automatic' to 'Link Local' and then reboot. Hopefully, after doing this you should find your speed levels return to expected levels!
    Hope it works for you.
    Cheers.

    Follow these instructions:

If the printer still doesn't work, try this:

  • Fix For Slow Down Worked!

From a previous fix - this worked to eliminate what was a 5 to 10 minute startup and shut down problem for our iMAC using OS X 10.5.8. with the 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo processor - from a thread from a while back (and sorry, I am not going through all the folks that contributed, but the dogs are ready to go outside):
    (full excerpt below my procedures)
    Procedures -
x - first close all unnecessary applications
    1 - go to applications
2 - load the Terminal App
    3 - type: sudo chown root:admin /
4 - then press the return key
5 - type in your password when asked (the screen will not show that you are typing)and the press the return key
    6 - type: sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
7 - then press the return key
    8 - type: sudo kextcache -system-caches
9 - then press the return key
10 - close the Terminal app
I then shut down my computer, started it up, let it fully boot, shut it down a second time, then when I restarted everything was back to normal!!!
Here is the actual excerpt I used to fix the slowness - don't ask me how it works, cuz I am a novice:
    From mad84max and user gbvin:
    Go to the Terminal App
"It seems that somehow the ownership of my root directory (/) wasn't assigned to the root account anymore, but to myself instead. This made the kernel prelinking fail since it requires that root is the owner. This is how you solve this after launching the Terminal app:
    terminal commands
    sudo chown root:admin /
    sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
    sudo kextcache -system-caches
You'll have to enter your password after the first command."
Hope this will help you since it was really frustrating for me.

I had slowness on my 3G after upgrading to iOS 4, but I found a simple fix here:
    http://www.davekawalec.com/2010/07/3-steps-to-fix-iphone-3g-slowness-after-ios4- upgrade/
It's basically the same steps you recommend, but then after a reboot, you can turn all of the search functions back on. I haven't had a performance problem since I did this.

  • My fix for slow boot after Leopard Upgrade

I was having the same issue as a lot of others in posts about extremely slow boot up times after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard. I spent a lot of time on the phone with Apple Support but in the end I stumbled across a fix for my situation.
After power up and getting to the login screen (about 5-6 seconds), it would take about 3 minutes to fully populate the desktop after entering my password. Most of that time just sitting at the login screen. Extremely painful.
My MacBook connects to a Windows Active Directory network. I was able to fix my slowness by disabling the Active Directory service. I was concerned at first but my bound volumes still work. I don't use a lot of AD services from my Mac so I at this point I have not found any issue with this fix.
To disable, go to Directory Utility, select services and if you have Active Directory enabled, disable it.
My boot time increased from 3 minutes to less than 15 seconds. Better than Tiger.
Tech Support is aware of this issue and has reported it the OS team for a fix.

    Hi-
Do you have a Tiger volume to test your machine with?
Do you still have video in Tiger?
If you don't have a Tiger volume to test on, I would consider such as an important troubleshooting step
So now I am wondering if it is the PCI slot that suddenly stopped working after the OS upgrade. Does anyone know if this is a documented issue and if there is a fix for it?
There are no issues with the AGP slot in relation to an OS version.

  • Fix for slow opening files... soon?

We have several stations set up globally in various offices using Photoshop CS...
Image files, no matter how small the file is... even a single small JPG takes a good 10-15 seconds to open (win xp) and we frequently need to work with hundreds of images. This seems to be a major problem and from what I find on Google, not uncommon...
I finally ran into this temporary 'fix' in the archives which involves setting up a LOCAL printer/driver as a DEFAULT...
While that DID alleviate that problem, I can't see that adobe is just letting this be THE fix for the problem... I've done updates to our CS3 products and have a difficult time believing that there is no permanent fix for this yet.
It seems unlike adobe to expect so many clients to have to experience this problem, spending hours or days trying to figure out why their systems have slowed down and asking themselves questions mostly unrelated to the problem, such as 'did i run out of swap space on my drive?', 'how are my history/cache settings?', 'is there some network drive causing the problem?', 'Is there some spyware slowing my box?', etc...
And on top of that having to notify all the offices... 'Okay guys, if you use photoshop you need to do this, this, and that... temporarily'
Please tell me there is a permanent fix soon...

I don't know which versions of photoshop need to check/contact the network printer...
For volumes of image processing via the batch commands I often need to use our old Photoshop 6 which, even with the network (a fairly large corporate network) the files open up almost instantly... every time... unless they're huge print resolution images...
On the same network for such a task (batching hundreds of images) PS CS3 is unuseable to us unless we implement the local printer 'fix'... and even so, there is more of a delay than with our old photoshop...
And why does it need to contact the printer for each file that is opened? For the first one, sure... check it, done... I'm not printing dammit, just opening files.
If it needs printer information the local OS already has drivers loaded up, couldn't it check those? It shouldn't have to look for other network devices on there unless it's using them... but I'm no tech... so there must be a reason that it simply MUST do it...
And even so... why is this 'fix' so damn hard to find on the net? Tons of people with issues and a lone, difficult-to-find blurb as an obscure fix...?

  • ThinkPad Twist s230u important questions regarding performance

    Hello everyone,
So, I recently bought a ThinkPad Twist (specifically the 33472GU, even though outlet said 3347XF4) from the outlet to upgrade the laptop that I take to class and I have to make a few questions that I hope get answered. I haven't really seen much attention paid to this particular device and it saddens me to see the lack of attention that it has seen.
In particular, I would have liked to see more response and helpfulness from Lenovo staff to address these concerns, but if anyone else has input, please let me know. Here is my list:
1.) It is true when they say the battery doesn't last long. I can barely squeeze 3/4 hours out of it depending on what I am doing. This is considering that I turned many of the settings down and even turned off things like bluetooth and windows 8 effects. How can Lenovo advertise 6/7 hours on this thing? No, my battery is not dead, in fact, it came with 46 mWh charge, better than what it was designed for (42 mWh). So I don't want to get sent to technical support to "fix" it. I want an honest answer and indication from staff that this issue is being taken seriously and addressed.
2.) With the above being said, is there a definitive answer from anyone about how I can extend my battery life to at least 5 hours without crippling the machine? I'm not willing to turn EVERYTHING off. That defeats the purpose of having bought the twist in the first place.
3.) Does anyone know when the Haswell version of the device is coming out? Not that I really have a choice because I already have this one. I just want to know that I didn't buy it weeks before a release so I don't feel cheated.
Otherwise, it's a great unit and concept in general. I was considering the x230t because it has everything and more (including battery life). But unfortunately it's a little overkill, much more expensive, and I couldn't find many configurations on the outlet (probably because nobody wants to return theirs).
I would appreciate any and all helpful recommendations/explanations (particularly honest ones) and I thank you for reading this.

I think our estimate of 3-4 hours of battery life is closer to real world if you are actively using the computer.
From the many forum posts, I have come to believe that the only way to exceed 5 hours is to replace the hard drive with an SSD.  I have gotten such good performance after reinstalling from scratch and getting the msata working that it is hard for me to justify the $200 for extra battery life and the annoying pauses when the harddrive shock sensor is triggered.
For me, this was a "you get what you paid for" situation.  I would have liked 8G of RAM and the i7 processor, but the i5 is acceptable.  The only way I think you will be satisfied is if you go SSD instead of the HD.  Good luck.

  • Thinkpad Twist s230U no internal display, works on HDMI and mini display port

    Hi,
My Thinkpad Twist does not display anything when turned on except on external monitors. The Device manager shows a greyed out internal display icon, says it is not connected.
    1. Could this be the power connect ribbon cable p/n DC002C003W00 have a fractured wire(s)? I have tested for open circuit between PWR1 and PWR2 connectors and there are 4 sequential pins which are open circuit. Is this normal?
    2. The touch screen works
    3. There appears to be absolutely no LED backlighting working
    4. Is there a possible fix for this and if so is it the power cables or some physical problem with the ribbon cables OR is it definitely a new display that is needed using existing cables?
    Thanks in advance
    Andrew

The last 4 pins on the connector are unused I have determined so it is not the power ribbon cable connector.
I found two wires fractured in the LCD ribbon cable right at the point where it feeds through the twist mount. I expect this could be a common problem after use. After repairing these two wires it did not fix the screen problem. I have ordered a replacement LDVS ribbon cable and will report back once I have replaced that.

  • Touchscreen gesture unresponsive in Thinkpad Twist S230u

Have been using newly purchased S239u ThinkPad Twist for 4 days.  The right side touchscreen gesturing to invoke charms menu no longer works (however works if use mouse in corner).  Also, gesturing from the bottom does not work.  Gesturing from the left side and top of screen does operate.  Taking unit back to store where purchased.  Anyone else have a similar problem like this?

Mine is unresponsive too. Compltely 100% unresponsive. Even after doing a complete reset and wipe of the hard drive. I  already sent it in twice now and Lenovo did not fix anything. I'm ready to sue lenovo for being in breach of warranty.

  • Thinkpad Twist s230u: Can no Longer Connect to the Internet

    Hello,
Several days ago my Lenovo Thinkpad Twist suddenly stopped connecting to the internet. I was at the cafe using my phone hotspot and everything was fine, but then when I got back home, it could not detect any wireless networks in my house. I thought it may have just been my wi-fi but my phone could connect to the wi-fi just fine. I tried plugging in my phone again for personal hotpot and it could detect my phone, but no longer connect to the internet (it'd say that it's connected, but no pages would load). I tried rebooting my computer, but the wireless networks still could not be found and my phone's hotspot could no longer help it connect to the internet. I tried a Malwarebytes Scan but that didn't detect anything, and my McAfee virus scanner is not gonna help me find anymore viruses (long story as to why I don't have a better virus protection).
Can't really install any updates since I can't connect to the internet at all...rebooted several times to no avail...
Any sort of help or ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!
    Sincerely,
    Ingrid

I just started to have similar problem. I cannot connect to interent via ethernet or wifi. Both connections show I am connected, but cannot acces any web pages. It is like it is not connected. I would like to know how to restore back to when I bought it, 12/20/13, and then re-load the Windows 8 pro that is somewhere on the partition HD. Any help out there?????? All my other devices/laptops/computers work fine on the internet.

  • Thinkpad Twist S230u: Clean Install - Windows 8 on Custom Partition

I want to install Windows 8 using my own partition configuration, meaning where I'd get a C and a D drive. On my other computers, this is what I have and I really like this configuration. I want to install Windows 8 on the C drive and have all my data on D. I have reformatted and partitioned the HDD to C and D. When I slot in Windows 8 Enterprise to install, I keep getting this message "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one." What the machine keeps wanting is for me to delete both partitions and create its own partitions and I don't want this. I know it wants this because I have clicked delete of the partitions and looked to see what it would do. It ended up creating several of its own partitions (not at all how I want it). When I re-partitioned the drive back to C and D (2 partition config), it would repeat that same error message.
Can someone please help tell me how do I install Windows 8 doing my own custom partition (C, D) where Win 8 is installed onto my choice of C and D is left for my data. Why does it keep saying, "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one"? Is it a settings in BIOS that I need to change to enable me to use my own partition? If so, what setting? I have never had these issues installing Win 8 using the C & D partition config on 3 other computers (not Lenovo S230u Twist).
    Thanks for your help!!! :-)

    Hello LightspeedX!
I glad you wrote this issue cause i still having the same problem (and questions).
I decided to put everithing down on my s230u because it is quietly irritant see a last generation porcessor like the I7 on a top plataform ultrabook running so slowly like our thinkpad do.
Since the embed software and the poor resource planning is the resposable for that issue, i really cant imagine why Lenovo decide to bring all this things up together at this device. I realize that any cheap I3 china device is more confortable and "quickly" to run any software than this machine in his original state (factory defaults), so i decid to try a brand new and clean installation of windows 8 or (perhaps) a dual boot configuration using a linux frindly distro like ubuntu.
At my own risc, like the cusummer service like to say, i will erase all HD and start this "saga" (making a full hard copy first, of course and will soon bring any results i found here.

  • Is there a fix for slow wifi speed on U310?

I bought early july a IdeaPad U310 in Texas, and then I moved to Belgium to study. The wifi speed was awefullt slow. So having read the forums, i rang the support in Belgium, and after long discussion, i sent the laptop for repair. Service was fine, but extremely slow, with no information what so ever of where the pc was, if it was received for reparation... anyway, three weeks after, so that today. i received it back and, according to the intervention report, the wireless controler was replaced. The thing is, the problem ofthe U310 is not a defectuous part, it is something more fundamental. I tested the PC in various speed test website.
I have three laptop, a Lenovo W520, a HP Mini 110, and the IdeaPad U310.
    I used speedtest.net and brosdbandspeedchecker.co.uk
    the result are
Lenovo W520: Download: 19.64 Mbps Upload: 1.99 Mbps
HP Mini 110: Download:15.72 Mbps Upload: 1.28 Mbps
    IdeaPad U310: Download 4.75 Mbps Upload:2.1 Mbps.
Now, the speed on U310 is not that catastrophic (not like the 0.3 Mbps I was getting) but still not great and rather much slower than the two other machines, and not fast enough to watch a movie in streaming, it pauses all the time.
So what should i do? Send it again?
But is there a fix to the problem? Because keeping changing the wifi controller as they did did not fix the PC. The MEDION Repair center, which is in charge to repair Lenovo for northern europe (i guess) stated as well that the test "#winstress#" as been done. What is it? Yes the wifi works, but way too slow.
    Thanks for advice.
