Fix multiple broken aliases after sync

I've synchronised my iMac with my new MacBook. I have quite a lot of aliases set up on the iMac, however, when they're transferred across, they retain their source path (i.e. when on the MacBook, clicking on the alias doesn't work because it's looking for a file on the iMac).
It's easy enough to fix the broken links individually, but I wondered if there was a way for this to be done en masse, automatically?
Can't be that hard - all the details of where to find the files are there, just with "MacBook" instead of "iMac".
Any advice gratefully received

Ok, to answer my own question...
If you get this problem after synchronising two machines, simply repair the disk permissions on the target machine and the aliases should start working again. Worked for me anyway!

Script to Batch Fix Broken Aliases?

I just recently migrated from an old PowerBook G4 to a new MacBook Pro and all went smoothly. Except, now in a folder that contains hundreds of aliases of various text files, all of the aliases are broken.
The original files are still present in their proper locations and I can fix each alias one at a time. Examining the properties of the broken aliases reveals that the paths to the original files seem to reflect where those files were located the first time I saved them. For instance, on the PowerBook, I saved some info from Safari into a text file and saved the file on my desktop. I put an alias of the file into a "Research Folder," then dragged the original into a "Clippings" folder. Well, now on the MBP with the migrated files, the alias thinks the original file is back on the desktop (and thus, the alias is broken). It's as though in the migration, the new MBP somehow got an old index or something.
In any case, the bottom line is that I can't accept the notion of going through and manually fixing each of the hundreds of aliases one at a time.
Fixing the aliases is pretty simple logic. The filenames are the same. It's basically search the home directory for a file with a matching name and type and make the new association.
Does anyone know of a script or applet that might be able to do this? Maybe there's another mass fix I'm not thinking of?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Update: For the record, I did fix permissions and run a disk repair after the migration.

To remotely rename folders you must use an admin account on the remote system. The folder must not be protected the system and you cannot us WMI to rename the folder.
You may have to restart the system after setting WMI to manual start as it can have locks and it may not shutdown cleanly.

I plug in my iPhone to the computer and iTunes appears to sync phone and allows me to download pictures but when I try to move music to or from my cell iTunes freezes. I don't know what to do to fix this. I am not very tech saavy.

Media disappears after syncing and a fix?

Twice I've found that my iPod media isn't on the iPhone after syncing. I found a fix on this board to try a soft reset. Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings. This revealed my media but I lost my few settings. Not a big deal but when it happened again is was starting to be a nuisance. I had been using my iPod dock to sync. It gave the airport setting warning which I ignored and went ahead with the sync. I wonder if this is the reason for the problem. Another fix may be to take the iPod connector from the dock and connecting it directly into the iPhone. It's worked once already. Hopefully a real fix??

When the iPhone is connected, in the iTunes Summary page, there is a button marked Restore. What this does is completely erase the iPhone, download the latest iPhone software and reload the iPhone. In the process it erases all of your Settings and resets everything to as if you had just bought a brand new phone (although you don't have to repeat Activation, thank goodness).

Broken aliases in mountain lion

I'm using 10.8.1 on a 15-inch MBP. Recently, I've been getting several repeatedly broken Aliases of folder on my desktop. My process is to create the folders on my local HD and then use the Finder option by right-clicking to Create Alias. I then move the Alias folder to the desktop and delete the word Alias. This has worked for me for years, but suddenly it's problematic on recently created folders. Even after I've "Fixed Alias". Has anyone had this experience?

This is a bit late this. I had similar problems, looked for an answer, and couldn't find one.
So I wrote a script that will do it as follows:
Given an alias directory, and a "target files" directory:
- Test files names for a trailing "alias" and test files to see if they are symbolic links.
- If so, search for filenames in the target directory tree matching the root of the alias or link name
- If found: replace the broken alias or link with a new symbolic link.
That works for me but it's not a very nice solution:
1) It doesn't use a good test for aliases, which is slightly dangerous but not very: It'll fail in the unlikely case a files which is not an alias finishes with " alias", or if an alias has had the trailing " alias" removed.
2) It doesn't check for multiple file matches, and will link to the first it finds. (or link to all of them in turn, over-writing, I can't remember).
3) most importantly: It removes all aliases and replaces them with symbolic links which isn't great. Aliases supposedly have greater flexibility than links which explains why they are ten times the size.
Links are enough for me - I'm just posting this as an indication of what can be done, without including my inelegant script.

From there, it's probably not hard to make a proper applescript "alias" test in place of my stupid filenamename method, and test separately for aliases and links to avoid the "all links" problem.
And finally a little test for multiple matches when searching for the target would be nice.

Songs purchased on iPhone through iTunes Store will not show up on iPhone after syncing with iTunes

I recently purchased iTunes Match (about a month ago). Since purchasing Match, any songs that I have bought on my iPhone 4S (32GB, Sprint) through the iTunes Store app will not sync back to my iPhone after syncing with iTunes on my computer. I have iOS 7.1.2 and iTunes 11.3.0.54. The only way I can get them to show back up in my iPhone music library so I can play them is by re-downloading the songs through the iTunes Store app. Which is super annoying because now it is about 10 songs that keep doing this, and they are in multiple playlists. Is anyone else having this problem and have you found any fixes? Really regretting purchasing the iTunes Match (which is not enabled on my iPhone, just on my computer).

How to create custom ringtones ...
1. Open iTunes.
2. Find the song that you want to make into a ringtone.
3. Listen to the song and find the part of it you want to use. The chorus may be a good place to start.
4. Write down the start and stop times of the clip.
5. Right-click the song and select "Get Info."
6. Click the "Options" tab.
7. Type in the start time of your ringtone in the text box next to "Start Time" in the minutes:seconds (i.e., 2:01) format.
8. Type in the end time of your ringtone in the text box next to "Stop Time." Make sure the ringtone is no more than 30 seconds long.
9. Click "OK."
10. Right-click your song again and select "Convert Selection to AAC." Wait for iTunes to convert your song. It will create a duplicate version.
11. Right-click the ringtone and select "Delete."
12. Click on the "Keep Files" button.
13. Find the file. It's usually in your User folder under "Music > iTunes > iTunes Music" and under the band's name. It will have an extension of m4a.
14. Replace the m4a extension of your ringtone with m4r. You can either double-click slowly to rename your file, or right-click and select "Get Info" on a Mac or "Rename" on a Windows PC.
15. Click "Use .m4r" or the PC equivalent when the system warns you that the change may affect the use of your file.
16. Double-click the ringtone file. ITunes will automatically add it to your ringtones folder in your iTunes Music Library.
17. Connect your iPhone and sync your ringtones.
Oh, also to change a file extension. (not sure on Mac), but in Windows you need to go to "control panel" select "folder options". You need to uncheck the box "hide file extension for known file types". This will allow you to view and change the files extensions.

Multiple instances spawned after daylight savings time change

This is a known issue and there is an SAP Knowledge Base Article created on this issue:

Symptom
Scheduled reports that are supposed to run once a day, run multiple times.
Duplicate instances are being created.
Environment
BusinessObjects Enterprise XIR2 SP5
BusinessObjects Enterprise XIR2 SP5 + FP5.x
Reproducing the Issue
A report is scheduled to be run on a daily basis - this is a Recurring schedule.
Normally the report runs once a day, at a particular time.
After Daylight Savings Time change, the report runs at the specified time, but immediately after the successful instance, another instance is spawned.
Many more instances spawn after each instance completes.
Cause
This is a known issue: ADAPT01318487. This issue is because of DST and how our code handles this change.
Resolution
There is currently no known fix for this issue. There is however a script that can quickly resolve the problem.
The issue it seems is related to Daily recurring schedules.
What this script will do:
it will run a query to display all your DAILY Recurring jobs
you will have the option to choose your jobs and reschedule them by 1 hour
you will then highlight the same job and change them back by 1 hour
by modifying the schedule times, you are modifying the schedule itself and this will keep the issue of duplicate instances from occurring.
Exact Steps to Complete:
Stop the Job Servers.
Double click on the .hta file.
Change the System Name to that of your CMS name.
Add the Administrator's password.
Click Logon.
Click List All Recurring Instances.
Select All.
Make note of what it says in: Schedule Selected Recurring Instances: Should be 1 hr earlier.
Click Reschedule Selected Recurring Instances.
Choose All instances again and change Schedule Selected Recurring Instances to 1 hour Later.
Click Reschedule Selected Recurring Instances.
Now start your Job Servers.
The issue should not occur again.

- The multiple spawned instances issue ONLY affects XI3 SP3+ only. For XI3 SP1 and SP2 all Fix Pack levels this is not an issue as it was introduced as a problem in SP3.
- 1568239 notes the Java version and can apply to all O/S environments and is updated to reflect that.
If you are located in Europe you can also apply the patches in advance of the DST change to avoid the problem. If you are in Americas at this point utilizing the clean up scripts for this year is the approach needed to clean up the spawned instances and reschedule the existing schedules.

Events not showing in iCal after sync with iPhone

A whole week of appointments don't show up in iCal after syncing with my iPhone - all the appointments are on my iPhone but they won't copy over.
Funnily enough, the week that is not showing up is changing every Monday...
Anyone seen this before?

"You'll know the syncing issue when you see it, because the new events you enter into the Calendar on your Apple iPhone will not appear in iCal. Said another way, you'll enter a new event into your iPhone, use iTunes to sync with your Mac (or MacBook in our case) and the new event on your iPhone will not show up in iCal. Keep trying, synch as you might, iCal and the Apple iPhone just won't get along.
Here's the down and dirty fix:
Open iCal and backup or export your entries. Make a note of the fie name and location, you're going to need them in a minute. Once your backup/export is completed, close the iCal application.
Open Finder and remove everything inside the "Username/Library/Calendars" folder. For instance, if your username is "Joe", then move everything inside the "Joe/Library/Calendars" folder.
Open the iSync application. It's located in the "/Applications/" folder. Once iSync is opened, go into the iSync Preferences (iSync -> Preferences) and push/click the "Reset Sync History" button. Then, close the iSync application.
Re-Open the iCal application and Restore your calendar. When prompted, use your notes from Step #1 to select the file your created earlier.
At this point all my appointments were showing up properly in iCal, and did not disappear after syncing again with the iPhone.

Slow motion lost after sync from mac to iphone

Hi,
I can capture videos in slow motion but those videos play at normal speed once Sync them via iTunes.
1. Capture videos in slow motion.
2. The videos first play in slow motion in the iPhone. There is a time line slider to move the slo-mo effect back and forth.
3. I do a back-up via iTunes including videos.
4. After syncing, the videos in the iPhone appear in one album called "Slo-Mo".
5. In the thumbnail of the video clip I can see the small dial icon that all other slow motion videos have.
6. Playing the video shows a normal speed clip without the timeline slider under the video frames view.
The videos DO retain the slo-mo "effect" in Aperture and iPhoto also. Not in the iPhone after syncing.
Any hints to solve this? thanks

Hi,
iOS 8.1 didn't fix the issue so here is my workaround to " show-off " my slow motion clips:
I have tried to open the clips with iMovie in the iPhone. ( I guess not everyone has iMovie installed...?)
So, you can create a new project in iOS iMovie and import the clip you want. Slow motion clips preserve the little dial icon so you can see which ones have the slo-mo effect. It will preserve the slow-motion sections of the original clip and will play "slow".
If for some magical reason your clip doesn't play "slow" in iOS iMovie click on the small "tachometer" icon and select the desired speed.
So. iMovie does know the clip has enough frames to play in slow motion... why the camera app doesn't ?

ITunes changing the ID3 tags and deleting music after syncing or opening

After syncing (or opening iTunes), iTunes changes the tags in about 25% of my music (this time it was about 90% affected). It removes the total track number on some of the songs. This has been a consistent problem. I noticed that it also actually erased some of my music, random tracks in my library are now missing (gone in windows explorer also). I have reformatted my iPod and restored it, it's not that. What is going on!! Going through and fixing 7500 songs every time I sync is ******* me off

Forgot to mention that it also copied the artist field data to the album artist field... had to erase all of those too

Mine is doing the exact same thing. It happens every time I click on a song. Weird letter-number strings are inserted into the Comments field, my album art is gone, and the track numbers are messed up.
I've tried upgrading to the new iTunes. I tried reinstalling iTunes. I turned off my soundcheck option and deleting potentially comprised files. Nothing's worked.
I've tried emailing Apple directly and got no help. Anyone know what's going on???

Apps don't work after sync

After syncing iPhone to iTunes (on Mac), I can not use any of my downloaded apps until I download a new one. I think this has to do with the fact that iTunes is linked to [email protected] while the iphone insists on using [email protected] If this is the case Apple really needs to fix it to allow users to use mac.com on their iPhones. I've had a .mac account since the service came out and do not plan on telling all my acquaintances to use me.com now. I know mac.com will work for incoming mail (dns points to the same server) but the whole thing is silly. Anyway, is anyone else having the same issue?

I have not experienced the same.
I've had a .Mac account since 2004 with my .Mac email address used for my iTunes account since that time, and my iPhone does not insist on using at me.com instead since the change to MobileMe. For those with a .Mac account, when creating the account with the iPhone's Mail application using the MobileMe account preset and entering their .Mac email address, the account should be created accordingly, not switched to the @me address to appear as the sending email address, or switched to the @me address for the iTunes account if iTunes on their computer is logged in with their @mac address when syncing their iPhone with iTunes.
Apple hasn't prevented using your .Mac email address with the iPhone's Mail application, or with the Mail.app on your Mac, or with any email client on any computer or device.

Fiori: incorrect alias used when multiple system aliases assigned

I'm implementing SAP Fiori PO/PR/Contract approval.
There is only 1 gateway system currently in order to support 4 ECC systems.
(Sandbox, development, quality and production)
Everything is working correctly when assigning only one (Sandbox) SAP system alias to the gateway service of PO approval for example.
However when we assign multiple system aliases and set the sandbox system alias as default things go wrong.
(Currently IW_BEP is not yet installed on the development; Quality and productive system)
And we noticed the service is resulting in an error message because these BEP function modules can not be found on the target system.
However the issue is that it should not call these systems as we have flagged Sandbox system as default.
Anyone has an idea or note for this?
(We temporary fixed this by assigning only a single alias to the services).
But in a later phase we want to add all in order to be able to test on all systems and run production as default.

I want the behaviour like mentioned in the note:
The default system is used whenever the service is not called as MOC. If you have defined more than one default system alias, the first system is used as the default.
How can I achieve this?
According to my understanding now I should make sure ";m"o is not added to the URL, but how can this be achieved?

Why do some of my contacts profile pictures appear as a blue square after syncing with facebook?

After syncing facebook friends with contacts, some of the profile pictures in contacts are replaced with a blue square.
Any ideas?

Greetings. Allow me to expand, please. I downloaded pictures from internet, as a collection with different themes directly from Internet. I only downloaded jpeg files or images. I organized my themes by folders on my desktop, then I copied some of them in a small 250gb external hard drive… But that´s just incidental. Whenever i had a folder of images that I wanted to play as a presentation, I just dragged the folder to the Iphoto main page and Iphoto just copies them and makes a file under the same name as the original folder. Of course I also have images of my own production, which are my main concern. But threee or four times, Iphoto said that I had inconsistencies in my pictures and I just had to agree to fix them. This operation could take up to a couple of hours por more...
But since I installed Yosemite, this glitch or question of inconsistencies, has not happened again, but somtimes, as I scroll through the folders in Iphoto, to edit some of the images or delete them, some of them become just a dotline square… I cannot see the image anymore, and when I do a presentation of the folders, these blaced out images appear in the show, as a black square or screen. I hope this information helps to answer your questions… Thank you for helping me.

Ipod video crashes when I attempt to eject after sync (Windows XP)

My ipod video synced perfectly in itunes for first two months. About two weeks ago, however, the ipod started crashing four out of five times when I try to eject it in itunes or stop the disk from Windows' "remove hardware safely" dialog box. It also crashes after syncing automatically when I disable disk use. It syncs all files fine, but when I attempt to eject, it goes directly from "Do not disconnect" to the apple logo, with the backlight flashing on and off periodically. At that point it will not reset, and I have to go into disk mode and restore it to get the ipod to show a menu again. I've restored it now about 10 times, and have reinstalled itunes but am still experiencing the same problem.
Please help!

If you're running iTunes 6.0.5, I would need the crash log to figure out why you're crashing.
Typically, you'll need to configure Dr. Watson on your PC in order to generate crash logs. Windows start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return. At the prompt in the command line window that comes up, type in
drwtsn32 -i
And hit return.
This will create crash logs in Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\. There'll usually be a file in here called "drwtsn32.log" If there's already a file there, it most likely has multiple crash logs in it (new crash logs are just appended to the end of the file). So, delete this file. This will make sure you're not sending extra information I don't need. These crash logs are text files, so you can open them in notepad or whatever to see what information you're sending.
So, get the machine setup to collect crash logs, do the thing that makes iTunes crash. Send it to me. It doesn't hurt to put the URL to this discussion thread because I get a lot of these messages and are easily confused.
