Fix your freaking software! Frustrated iPod user about to send it back

Ok, I really am at the end of my tether here.
I have iTunes 7.0.1 and an 80Gb iPod, all running on a lovely Windows XP Pro SP2+latest hotfixes system.
As per the other million (give or take several thousand) people who've had connection issues, my iPod is detected fine by Windows XP, and will even mount itself as the iPod.
However, iTunes completely fails to bother detecting it.
Yes, I've tried the extremely useless 5 R's (including this piece of useless support doc: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716), but without fail, iTunes still acts like a little kid, and refuses to do what it's told.
I'm currently using the 'tried and true, but shouldn't have to do this' approach of restarting the iPod Service manually.
****, I've even made a .cmd file to do this automagically - this works to a point, and that point is I don't want to have to do this every freaking time I dock the iPod.
Some facts regarding this:
1) I have disabled various services within Windows XP, this has not stopped iPod's being detected by iTunes in previous incarnations (iTunes 6.x) - it was a Firewire capable iPod, btw.
2) I've tried deleting the BIN folder of the iPod programs directory, and repairing the iTunes installation, that's done SFA.
3) I've tried stopping the iPod Service.exe file via taskmanager, and doing the ol' c:\program files\ipod\bin\ipod service.exe /service routine. Again, thats done SFA.
4) I've tried a clean Windows XP installation, I've tried system restore, I've upgraded from 6.x to 7.0 to 7.0.1, and still SFA.
5) I've even gone as far as sacrificing a virgin goat under a blue moon, but all that got me was a court order to 'cease all satanic rituals'.
I am now at the point where I will simply send the iPod back to Apple, ask for a refund, and become one very ****** off consumer.
So, if there is any service rep out there, or other unwilling victim of this horrific tripe that Apple has unleashed that has managed to fix the problem up, please let me know how you've done it, because I'm starting to suffer from a lack of MUSIC!

that may well be the culprit. make sure that Terminal Services is not disabled. see:

  • How to fix your iPod if it can't be mounted or recognized

Unless the iPod's HD is dead and damaged, it can be fixed by doing a Restore but how about it cannot be mounted or recognized by the computer and the window of the iPod updater will show a grey box of "RESTORE" and not allow you to click it.
Recently, I am busy to fix up my daughter's iPod (Mac version) she just bought back from UK, also a friend's iPod (PC version). I have done every steps but still not able to get the iPods mounted, therefore, for the last attempt, I plugged the Mac's iPod (in DISK MODE)with my PC, interestingly, the windown pop up and showing the message (cant remember the exact wording) that the iPod can't be read, then I opened the iPod updater, and I saw the Restore key "light up" and allowed me to the Restore. Once completed, the iPod showed a "plug to wall AC adapter" sign, so I connected it with the AC Charger, and the iPod showed the bar and indicated the completion of the Restore process.
Then I plugged it with my MAC, and got recognized and allowed me to do a Restore in Mac's version of iPod updater.
Then, I connected my friend's iPod (PC version) with my MAC, (again make sure to put it in Disk Mode before plug it with a Computer), I saw the iPod's icon showed up on my Disktop, so I opened the Disk Utility, did a ERASE (format in MS DOS), once finished, I replug it with the PC, and opened the iPod updater and allowed me to do a Restore.
It is worth to try if you have probelm with your iPod which is not able to do a Restore, what you need is check with your friends whether they got a PC or a Mac for you to fix up the problem.
    Good luck

  • HOW TO... Fix Your **** iPod's Connectivity to PC

    Okay, Windows XP user?
Do you have the following symptoms:
    1) The iTunes and iPod Updater do not recognise the iPod. You've tried the 4 R's, but NONE OF them work?
    2) The 5th R "Restore" will not work because iPod Updater hangs on Initialize and does not recognise your iPod?
    3) Does your iPod appear in 'My Computer' as 'Removable Disk', but upon clicking that, it hangs and crashes?
    4) Does your iPod not eject properly from PC and simply hangs?
5 Does this happen on every computer you connect that iPod too, regardless of the connecting wire?
I've racked my brains about this for a while [12 hours] and I know alot of you are having these same troubles, especially Windows XP users.
What I've come to realise is that the iPod's data has become currupted somehow. The only way to get around this is to reformat it. Yes folks, you're gonna have to LOSE ALL YOUR FILES ON THE IPOD.
I was very adament at first, but if you've exhausted the entire Support Troubleshooting pages and none work... this is the only way.
To DELETE ALL DATA and REFORMAT, do this:
Make sure the iPod is not connected to PC.
Uninstall iPod and iTunes programs on your PC.
Make sure any non essential system utilities like anti-virus, IE, Firewall, Internet connectivity, MSN, AIM, whatever is OFF.
Make sure any existing iPod and iTunes services are off by CTRLALTDELETE and clicking Processes. End Task 'iTunesHelpers', 'iTunes', 'ipod service'.
On the iPod, press and hold the 'Menu' and 'Centre' buttons for longer than 6 seconds. The Apple Logo will appear.
Then press and hold 'Play Pause' and 'Menu' buttons for longer than 6 seconds to go into 'Disk Mode'
Now plug your iPod into your USB.
Wait for the computer to load profiles, this may take awhile so do not do anything until its finished. It may seem like its hanging but bear with me.
Right Click 'My Computer'> Manage > Disk Management
You'll see your iPod Volume there. Again it may hang but let it work its magic.
Right click the iPod drive [absolutely make sure it's the iPod and not your PC hard drives!] and click 'Format'
Ignore the 'Volume Label' and 'Allocation unit size'
Change File system to "FAT 32".
Make sure 'Perform a quick format' and 'Enable file and folder compression' are unticked.
    Then click OK.
This may take a long time to reformat on USB 2.0. Roughly an hour.
When the Status is 100%, you will notice in 'My Computer' that you can access the thing and it will not hang or crash.
    Eject the iPod.
    Now restart the PC.
Install iPod Updater and restart again. Don't install iTunes.
Now plug the iPod back in the PC.
Open the iPod Updater software and it will actually recognise the iPod this time.
Click on 'Update' to update the firmware. This will take 5 minutes, you can see after 2 minutes the Apple logo on the iPod and a progressive bar. YOU MUST NOT DISCONNECT, EJECT, TURN OFF PC, OR CRASH THE IPOD EVER AT THIS POINT OR YOU WILL **** UP ROYALLY.
When the 'Update' is complete, click on 'Restore' to restore it to factory settings. This will take a few mins.
VOILA, YOUR IPOD IS NOW FULLY WORKING AND UPDATED BACK TO HOW IT WAS WHEN YOU BOUGHT IT [IF NOT BETTER]
Now re-install your iTunes or whatever programs and refill it
Be wreary about what you put on it though, maybe it was something dodgy before that could trigger the fault again.
    Good luck

      Windows XP

Hi just wanted to let you know I solved most of my XP problems with my new IPOD. It won't recognise the IPOD or driver and froze and locked up and then the battery died. After hours of trying different things here is what I did. I completly closed computer down. Waited 15 minutes turned on and reloaded everything. I put the usb cable in but not hooked up to IPOD. I turned off Mcaffee (all of it). After my computer came on. I then went and closed everything I didn't need in the bottom toolbar. (taskbar). I then reloaded the software and waited. Took forever to reload and I don't know why but whatever it worked but I DID NOT HOOK UP THE IPOD LIKE IT SAID! I instead shut down the computer after loading the software and waited 5 minutes and turned it back on. I again waited and shut of mcaffee. It loaded everything fine this time and said new hard ware and drivers detected. I plugged my IPOD in and YES I WAS UP AND RUNNING (THIS IS AFTER 6 HOURS OF PLAYING WITH OTHER THINGS!) I am able to load and play, burn, watch movies, see pictures and everything your suppose too! The only thing I see different than the instructions is I left my usb cable plugged in and when it said to eject the disk I didn't. I also didn't plug in the IPOD (5th Gen) and then I shut down waited and then restarted the computer. I hope this helps others because I know the feeling of wanting to return something you paid dearly for and worked hard at saving money to buy one and it doesn't work. My only thing I dislike about apple is they didn't supply a ac adapter for the IPOD and the instructions say to plug it up when trying to charge battery. DUHHHHHH, ya can't do that if ya don't have one and stores are closed and won' open until Monday! But at least I am up and running. I just hate having to plug up IPOD to computer daily to charge the battery which only last a half a day1

Error message when attempting to back up iPod to iTunes, no number given. No previous back ups as a new user, current iTunes software and iPod iOS.

The issue you are experiencing is with installing the latest iTunes update.  I recommend following the steps below:
    Resolution
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
    Check for .dll files
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
    Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
    Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
    Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.
I understand that you have already uninstalled iTunes, but when you get to this step, it is important to uninstall iTunes and the related components in the order listed in the link for that step.

  • GRRRR!!!!!! Forget "Sad iPod" how about "Angry Me"!

I have had my iPod for nearly 6 months now and I have had almost all the problems possible for an iPod photo
But NOW I have had all of the problems...
Now my iPod is not recognized by windows or iTunes However when I plug my iPod into my PC it makes the little buh-ding sound meaning Windows has detected new hardware but it still does not show up i anywhere on my PC
I have already read the all the articles Apple has put up (with all of it's stupid ideas)...
I use USB and I will not buy a Firewire card as my computer is very unique and only accepts special sizes and kinds of cards and it is no longer supported even by its manufacturer (So please do not post "get a firewire card")...
Please help me as I have had the "folder exclamation point" error and the "sad iPod" error many times and all the others at least three times each
PLEASE if any of you more experienced iPodders have any suggestions I would appreciate it if you would reply
    Thank You In Advance

iPod Photo 30GB, IBM PC (netvista... don't get confused no one has heard of this)   Windows XP Pro   USB Ports that are working JUST FINE!

I can understand your frustration and knowing that you have already tried all the ideas from the Apple's articles.I am not a techicine but I have managed to fix around 10 iPods (from friends and family members) which had the error of "Sad iPod" or "folder with exclamation mark". The successful ratio is higher than 80%. In my opinion, ipod shows a sad iPod or folder icons - either it has a corrupted software or its head of the hard disk get stuck at a certain point. Unless it is a dead hard disk, there is still a way to solve it. The following are my suggestions, please try one at a time.
    A. The simple way is do a Reset and a Restore - of course, I understand that at this stage, most iPods would not get recognized by the computer. However, please try plug and unplug it few times or even try a different port, out of sudden, the iPod will get mount and allow the user to do the Restore.
    B. Let iPod's battery drain
In rare cases, iPod might get into a state in which it needs to be drained completely before it can be reset. If iPod didn't turn on after you reset it, follow these steps:
Disconnect iPod from all power sources and leave it disconnected for about 24 hours.
Reconnect iPod to the Apple iPod Power Adapter or computer and reset it.
    C. My preference - find a Mac computer to fix up the PC formatted iPod or vice versa. When connecting the iPod with a different kind of computer, it is likely to get force mounted with the computer. Do a Restore there (or I prefer to reformat the iPod then open the iPod updater for doing the Restore). Once it has being completed, replug your iPod back with the your computer and redo the Restore back to the original version. Please remember that you may need to do few attempts to get it done. If you have a problem to find a Mac computer, go to the nearest Apple Shop, and ask them a favour for doing the Restore for you.
If the above still can't solve the problem, and you do not want to send it for repairing, or you do not want to pay the service fee as your iPod is no longer covered with the warranty. Then please think carefully whether you want to go for the last esort - but do it at your own risk - which works in my case but does not mean it works in your case as well, or it will put your iPod even worse.
    D. Drop your iPod from the waist height to the carpetted floor, there are few cases being reported in this forum that the iPod get solved in this way. But again, I agree that people may not report in case it failed.

  • Very random and frustrating iPod problem

I've had my 80GB classic for 2 years, no problems. Yesterday, after uploading new music I noticed my iPod was completely empty. iTunes gave me no warning message so I thought it was just a random bug.
But now I cannot transfer any music to my iPod. Earlier today it asked me to run a disk check on my iPod to repair it, which I did, and have tried transferring music with no success. Everytime I connect my iPod it tells me it cannot be read and to restore it to factory settings. I do that, but at a random point in the transfer process, it will give me the "error 69" message and stop.
The weird thing is it does this with RANDOM songs. And it's not new songs I just downloaded. The most recent one was for a song I've had for the entire 2 years I've had my iPod! Another odd thing is that the transfer process is INCREDIBLY slow. I have 75GBs of music and it took me 3 hours to get halfway through... and then give me the error message and delete all my progress. Right now, I'm transferring one song a second when before it was at least 25 times as fast before it suddenly stopped working yesterday.
Anybody have any solutions? I've deleted the songs that keep popping up, but like I said, it's random songs, not recently downloaded songs only. I have successfully transfered music ONCE; I tried uploading one album as a test so I didn't waste my time uploading 75GB and it worked. But then I transfered the rest of my music and got the same **** error.
Is it the actual disk inside the iPod that's damaged?

*Check your iPod with Diagnostics Mode*
It's possible that your iPod's hard drive has started to fail. Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine for my 2 year old 6th Generation Classic:
    Retracts: 889
    Reallocs: 12
    Pending Sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours: 2202
    Start/Stops: 894
    Temp: Current 24c
    Temp: Min 10c
    Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press *SELECT & MENU* for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
    *Reallocated Sectors Count*
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
    *Pending sector count*
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.
    <hr>
Assuming the diagnostics give the drive a clean bill of health it may still be worth checking the drive for logical file system errors.
    *Check iPod hard-drive for errors*
Hold Select+Menu on the iPod for about 6 seconds until it resets, then hold Select+Play as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode. Open iTunes and in the Sync tab of the preferences menu check *Disable automatic syncing of all iPhones & iPods*. Now connect your iPod to the computer, wait until it connects, then close iTunes. Browse *My Computer* and right-click on the drive for the iPod, click Properties, then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click *Check Now*. Under Check disk options, select *Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors* (Optional - takes ages but a good idea if you've reason to suspect physical damage). Click Start. Mac users should run *Disk Utility / Repair Disk* for the equivalent process. This should find and correct any errors in the logical & physical structures of your iPod's hard drive. Once these have been fixed you can reset the iPod (hold Menu+Select ) and should stand a better chance of a successful restore. It might also pay to check the status of the source drive containing your media, particularly if no errors were found on the iPod.
And if that still doesn't help try Erase your iPod - The Super Fix for most iPod Problems. Basically a low level format of the iPod’s hard drive to get around whatever problems are stopping iTunes from restoring it.
Once you've restored your iPod don't rush to dump all the data back exactly as it was before. I have found that lots of large or complex smart playlists can sometimes trigger constant reboots or dumping of the iPod's library. In addition, larger transfers can fail leaving data in an inconsistent state. Try this technique for populating the iPod in stages.
    *Break up large transfers*
In iTunes select the menu item *File... New Smart Playlist*. Change the first drop-down box to Playlist, the next to is and the next to Music. Tick against *Limit to*, type in say 10, then change the drop-down to GB, and set the last drop-down to artist. When you click OK you can enter a name for the playlist, e.g. Transfer. Now sync this playlist to your iPod rather than your entire library. When the sync is complete modify the rule ( *File... Edit playlist* ) to increase the size by your chosen amount, then sync and repeat. You can experiment with different size increments, if it doesn't work just choose something a bit smaller until it works each time. Before long you should have all your music on your iPod. Once that's done you can move on to other media such as podcasts, videos, photos, playlists etc.

  • I fixed my broken 3.3 IPOD TOUCH

My ipod touch broken after i install 3.3 software, it couldn't turn on when i press any buttons.I spent a half day to fix it , finally i did it!
All you need to do is set up another account in your PC , NOT ITUNES ACCOUNT!
They would automaically install software 2.2 for you , not the latest one, then restore it!
Restore using a new user account
Create a new user account on your computer and try to restore while logged in as the new user. iTunes will download a new version of the software restore file. After creating the new user, log in to that account and open iTunes and attempt to restore to see whether the issue persists in this new user.
Use these steps if you're not sure how to create a new user
    Windows Vista and Windows XP
1.From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.
    2.Open User Accounts.
3.Select Create a new account and follow the instructions to complete the account setup process.
4.Once the new account is created, choose Log Off from the Start menu.
5.Log in to the newly created user account.
    Mac OS X
1.From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    2.Choose View > Accounts.
3.Click the "+" (you may need to authenticate to be able to click this).
4.Give the new user a name and short name and enter a password.
5.Select the checkbox for "Allow user to administer this computer". This makes the user an administrator user.
    6.Click Create Account.
I hope you guys can fix your IPOD! =]

    RESOLVED!
Thanks bigmil87 for your message, I really appreciate your advice. I've put down a list below of what did and didn't work for me in case other people have this problem (advice: restore on another PC).
Also interested that 1604 is a USB timing issue - I think that my netbook may have powered down during the update causing some compatibility/timing issue when I fired it up again.
For anyone who catches the dreaded 1604 error this is what did and didn't work for me:
    1. What did not work for me:
o closing iTunes without disconnecting the iPod
o usual restore function (ie holding down home key and on switch)
    o deleting the ipsw file
o clean reinstall of all iTunes and associated software
o clean reinstall of all iTunes with earlier iTunes version
o changing the USB hub being used
o remounting (reloading driver) for USB
o creating new user account on same computer restoring while logged in as the new user
    2. What did work for me (yay)
o creating new user account on my friend's Windows Vista PC, logging into new user account, and downloading latest iTunes then plugging in the iTouch.
    3. Result:
I did the 'Sync of the century' on the original netbook and it restored everything with my App data intact (happy about that - I was on level 22 'Alive4Ever' all time best game out there).
One small issue is that my music is only 1/3 transferred, no idea why. Haven't tried to fix it yet but if anyone knows why this happens grateful for advice. (All the music is my own rip from CD using EAC via LAME out to mp3 320kbps, not iTunes purchases).
Scary thing is, I can't live without my iTouch - it is just too good - has everything I use every day (learning apps, music, games, podcasts etc)...when it went down I was in a panic.
When all is said and done and even though I admire Apple for their products and quality I'm not confident this release was tested fully and next release I will think twice before clicking 'yes' to the update option. It took half a day to get the restore going properly.

  • IPhone Battery Fix ---  Update 5.1.0 Works !!!  Steps to fix your Battery

This was my post on another area but I accidently marked it as a question, so someone told me I shouldn't have marked it as a question so it could have helped more people...so here it is,  I hope it helps you too.
*** THIS WILL FIX YOUR iPhone BATTERY ISSUE !!!!!! BUT YOU HAVE TO TAKE THESE STEPS EXACTLY AS I MENTION THEM AND IN THE ORDER STATED. SOME OF THESE MAY SEEM REDUNDANT BUT PLEASE BE PATIENT AND FOLLOW THEM AND YOU WILL HAVE YOUR iPhone BACK THE WAY IT WAS MEANT TO BE.
I AM UNDER THE OPINION THAT THE REASON WHY WE HAVE NOT HEARD MORE OUT OF APPLE IS THAT THEY KNOW THE UPDATE WORKS BUT PEOPLE ARE NOT GOING THROUGHT THE PROPER STEPS FOR THE UPDATE TO TAKE CORRECTLY. I TOO WAS DISAPPOINTED AND STARTED HAVING MY DOUBTS ABOUT APPLE , ESPECIALLY SINCE THIS WAS MY FIRST iPhone.
***GIVE THIS A TRY BEFORE YOU GIVE UP ON THEM COMPLETELY IT WILL HELP***
    HERE WE GO…
ALLOW YOURSELF ABOUT 1 ½ TO 2 HOURS TIME TO INVEST IN THIS PROCESS BUT IT’S WORTH IT
    Hello Again,
Well…in my last post right after I did the 5.1.0 update to my iPhone 4s I remarked about how it worked and it was doing great. Not long after that (the next day at work) I noticed that the battery life was better or seemed to be but it wasn’t quite what I thought it should be. So as I am “OCD” and do not mind doing some trial and error on my phone (I mean what do we have to lose at this point right????) Here are my findings and there is a significant increase in the battery life. Just for good measure even after I discovered the difference in mine I took my wife’s 4s and performed the exact same steps to hers and she is back to the way the 4s is supposed to be, and the way it was in the beginning when we first purchased them!! (might I say she was a little reluctant to let me have my will with hers since doing the 5.0.1 update was all my doings anyway and took our phones from us so to speak, but being a good wife she trusted me one last time ;-)
THE PROCESS AS I DID IT:
OPEN ICloud AND IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY DONE SO DO A BACK UP, THIS STEP IS SOLELY TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU WILL HAVE YOUR CONTACTS AFTER YOU ARE FINISHED WITH THIS WHOLE PROCESS. WE WILL NOT BE RESTORING FROM iCloud SO THIS STEP IS NOT FOR A RESTORE PURPOSE.
AFTER YOU HAVE BACKED UP TO iCloud
OPEN YOUR SETTINGS ICON AND ONE CATEGORY AT A TIME STARTING WITH THE AIRPLANE MODE AND START GOING DOWN THE LIST, GO INTO EACH ONE AND MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IN THAT TAB AND SUB-TABS IN TURNED OFF. **EVERYTHING**
O.K. AFTER YOU HAVE TURNED EVERYTHING OFF GO INTO SETTINGS AGAIN AND COMPLETELY DELETE ALL OF YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNTS AND YOUR iCloud ACCOUNT. IT’S O.K. YOUR iCloud ACCOUNT IS NOT REALLY DELETED YOU ARE JUST DELETEING IT FROM YOUR PHONE. WE WILL BE PUTTING IT BACK ON LATER.
LEAVE ALL APPS ON YOUR PHONE THAT YOU THINK OR KNOW THAT YOU WANT AND DELETE ANY THAT YOU THINK YOU DO NOT WANT.
NEXT STEP IS CONNECTING TO iTunes BUT…NOW YOU HAVE TO BE QUICK AND AT THIS POINT AND STOP THE SYNC PROCESS BY CLICKING ON THE CIRCLE WITH AN “X” IN IT AT THE TOP MIDDLE OF SCREEN WHERE IS READS WHAT STEP IN THE SYNC PROCESS IT IS IN. DO NOT LET YOUR PHONE SYNC JUST YET OR YOU WILL UNDO EVERYTHING YOU JUST DID MANUALLY WITH YOUR PHONE.
IN THE LEFT COLUMN IN iTunes YOU WILL SEE YOUR iPhone’s NAME RIGHT CLICK ON IT (WINDOWS) OR TWO FINGER TAP (MAC) AND CHOOSE “BACKUP” AGAIN YOU MAY THINK A LOT OF THIS IS REDUNDANT AND YOU COMPUTER GURU’S OUT THERE MAY KNOW A BETTER WAY BUT THIS IS WHAT WORKED FOR ME (REPEATADLY) AND SO FOR THE PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT MAY NOT KNOW OR ARE FRUSTRATED THE UPDATE ISN’T WORKING THIS IS MEANT TO HELP WHOEVER IS ABOUT TO GIVE UP ON THERE PHONE.
AFTER YOU HAVE BACKED YOU PHONE UP IN iTunes (WHICH WE DID JUST FOR SAFE MEASURE) CLICK ON “SUMMARY” AND CHOOSE THE “DOWNLOAD & UPDATE”, THIS WILL TAKE ABOUT 40 MINS.
O.K. NOW AFTER YOUR PHONE HAS DOWNLOADED AND UPDATED, YOU MAY BE AT A POINT TO WHERE YOU ARE CHOOSING WHAT TO LET RUN ON YOUR PHONE LIKE “SIRI, LOCATION SERVICES, iCloud, ETC.” CHOOSE “NO” FOR ALL OF THEM SO NOT LET ANYTHING START TO RUN ON YOUR PHONE. NOW AT THE STEP OF SETTING UP iCloud OR iTunes CHOOSE SKIP OR IF IT WON’T LET YOU SKIP CHOOSE “SET UP WITH iTunes” AND LET YOUR PHONE CONNECT TO iTunes. (REMEMBER DO NOT LET YOUR PHONE SYNC AT THIS POINT EITHER…STOP IT !!
NOW AT THIS POINT YOU ARE GOING TO DO PRETTY MUCH THE SAME THING BUT AS YOU WILL SEE IT WILL BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT.
AGAIN CHOOSE THE “SUMMARY” TAB AND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCREEN YOU WILL SEE “UPDATE” OR “RESTORE”, THIS TIME YOU ARE GOING TO CHOOSE “RESTORE”! IT’S O.K. PUSH IT, DON’T BE SCARED…EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ALRIGHT. LOL
NOW THIS PART IS CRITICAL…AFTER YOU CLICK “RESTORE” THE NEXT SCREEN YOU SHOULD BE LOOKING AT (AND I DON’T REMEMBER IS IT PROCEEDS WITH THE RESTORE OR IF YOU HAVE ONE MORE OPTIONS SCREEN) IS EITHER ONE THAT ASKS IF YOU WANT TO RESTORE TO LIKE NEW FACTORY SETTINGS OR HAS A TEXT BOX TO CHOOSE THE PHONE NAME…EITHER WAY…YOU WANT TO CHOOSE RESTORE PHONE TO FACTORY SETTING (LIKE NEW) THEN WHEN YOU ARE LOOKING AT A SCREEN THAT READS “iPhone Name” AND IS HIGHLIGHTED CHOOSE THE NAME YOU WANT YOU PHONE TO BE. THEN RIGHT BELOW THAT IS A FEW “CHECK BOXES” UN-SELECT THE ONE THAT READS SYNC AND RESTORE TO A BACK-UP. YOU DO NOT WANT TO RESTORE TO A BACK-UP !!!!
NOW ONCE THE RESTORE PROCESS HAS FINISHED AND YOUR PHONE HAS RE-BOOTED YOU SHOULD BE LOOKING AT A SCREEN THAT ASKS YOU TO CHOOSE YOUR COUNTRY, AGAIN GO THROUGH ALL THE STEPS AND AGAIN DO NOT CHOOSE YES TO ANY OF THE OPTIONS LIKE SIRI OR LOCATION SERVICES OR iCloud. CHOOSE NO TO ALL. IT MAY NOT LET YOU CONTINUE PAST THE iTunes ACCOUNT PART IF NOT GO AHEAD AND ENTER IN YOUR iTunes INFO I.E. EMAIL & PASSORD.
NOW YOU SHOULD BE LOOKING AT A PHONE THAT LOOKS AS PLAIN AS THE DAY YOU BOUGHT IT !!!! EXCITING HUH?...J/K THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT. NOW WHAT I DID AT THIS POINT IS A HARD RESTART WHERE YOU HOLD THE “HOME” BUTTON AND THE “LOCK SCREEN” BUTTON AT THE SAME TIME LET THE PHONE BLACK OUT AND KEEP HOLDING THEM UNTIL YOU SEE THE APPLE ICON, NOW LET GO OF THEM BOTH.
AFTER THAT DO A SOFT RESET THIS IS WHEN YOU HOLD JUST THE “LOCK SCREEN” BUTTON UNTIL THE “POWER OFF” SLIDER APPEARS AT THE TOP, WHEN IT DOES GO AHEAD AND SLIDE IT TO TURN YOU PHONE OFF.
AFTER A MOMENT TURN YOU PHONE BACK ON
AFTER PHONE BOOTS UP GO INTO "SETTINGS" AND CHOOSE RESET ALL SETTINGS AND LET IT CYCLE THROUGH AGAIN.
NOW AFTER PHONE POWERS BACK UP, PLUG IT INTO YOUR COMPUTER AND OPEN iTunes, AGAIN STOP THE SYNC PROCESS !!!!!
O.K. NOW STILL IN iTunes CHOOSE THE “APPS” TAB AND LOOK AND MAKE SURE YOU WANT THE APPS THAT ARE THERE AND WAITING TO BE SYNCD IF YOU DO NOT WANT THEM ALL UN-CHECK THE ONES THAT YOU DON’T WANT. THIS MAY BE A GOOD TIME TO BE “CHOOSY” AND NOT PUT A BUNCH OF JUNK ON YOUR PHONE THAT MAY NOT LET YOU KNOW IF THE UPDATE “TOOK” SO TO SPEAK.
AFTER CHOOSING APPS YOU WANT GO AHEAD AND CHECK THE SYNC BOX AND CLICK SYNC AT THE BOTTOM.
AFTER YOU HAVE YOUR APPS ON YOUR PHONE YOU CAN GO TO “SETTINGS” AND GO TO THE iCloud TAB AND ENTER IN YOUR iCloud ACCOUNT SIGN IN INFO. ONCE YOU DO THAT TURN OFF THE THINGS YOU DON’T WANT IT TO BACK UP. MATTER OF FACT I TURNED EVERYTHING OFF AND THE ONLY ONE THAT I LET “KEEP INFORMATION ON PHONE” WAS CONTACTS. (REMEMBER EARLIER WHEN WE WHERE HERE AND I MENTIONED WE WOULD COME BACK TO THIS LATER? WELL HERE WE ARE…ONLY FOR CONTACTS)
AFTER SYNCING CONTACTS (AND GIVE IT A FEW MINUTES TO DOWNLOAD THEM ALL) I CHOSE TO DELETED MY iCloud ACCOUNT AND KEEP CONTACTS INFO ON PHONE. (YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU WANT BUT IT MAY RUN IN THE BACKGROUND ALL THE TIME AND MESS YOUR UPDATE UP) USE AT OWN RISK
NOW GO BACK INTO YOUR SETTINGS AND SET EVERYTHING UP LIKE YOU WANT IT LIKE YOUR SOUNDS ETC., I KEEP AUTOMATIC BRIGHTNESS OFF AND SET IT ABOUT 1/3 THE WAY UP, ON YOUR EMAILS I SET MINE UP NOT TO “PUSH” I WANTED TO BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD ANY NEW EMAILS WHEN I ACTUALLY OPEN MY EMAIL APP.
WELL THERE YOU GO…I HOPE IT HELPS YOU GET YOU PHONE BACK (AND YOUR LIFE) LOL
HOPEFULLY THIS WILL HELP YOU, AGAIN I FEEL THAT THIS IS WHY WE HAVEN’T HEARD MORE FROM APPLE, THEY KNOW IT WORKS, IT’S JUST DO-IT-YOURSELF USERS LIKE US THAT DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO DO-IT-OURSELVES THE CORRECT WAY.
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME AND PATIENCE !!
I WILL TRY TO ATTACH SOME PICTURES TO SHOW MY USAGE AND BATTERY LIFE FROM 1:00 AM FRIDAY TO ABOUT 8:00 AM MONDAY MORNING !!!
    This was before Update 5.1.0
Right After Quick Charge After Update to 5.1.0 with the above steps.
    And so on...

• Error message "some of your quicktime software is out of date...."

After about 8 hrs of troubleshooting so far I need help here...please...I have a new ipod touch 3g (32gb) that requires itunes-9 and i have itunes-8. when i try to load itunes-9 i get the same error message about apx. half way thru the install. at the point of install status "initializing quicktime types" the error message comes up: "some of your quicktime software is out of date, You can fix this problem by updating to the latest version" with the choice to "cancell" or "do it now" and I have tried "do it now" many times and other times tried cancell but either way it just ends up coming back many times with the same error message and either freezes the computer or eventually after maybe 15-20 error messages stops but the unstall is frozen. I have already tried uninstalling quicktime, itues, etc and spent 1.5 hours on the phone with Apple support and they can't figure it out. Please help...I appreciate your support.

Some other application may have installed older QuickTime componentry on the PC.
First let's have a closer look in your \system32\ to see if we can find any misplaced componentry down there.
First, in My Computer go "Tools > Folder Options". Click the "View" tab. Make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected, and that "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked. OK out of the Tab.
Now navigate to C:\Windows\system32\. (It might be easiest to switch to "List" view at this point.)
What files or folders can you see in \system32\ with QuickTime in the title?
(On a PC with a standard QuickTime installation, you should see precisely two files:
    QuickTime.qts
    QuickTimeVR.qtx
... and no Quicktime folders whatsoever.)
