Fixed - bent connector - S12 ION poor wireless performance - Lenovo support no help

Hi forum,
I received my Thanksgiving deal S12 ION last week.  The size and format are perfect, the overall performance just what it needs to be, but the wireless performance is unacceptable.  I work for IBM, and have a T60P work laptop and two Y430 laptops, all of which have perfect full bars of wireless signal throughout my house.  But this S12 ION has only three bars in my office next to the wireless G router, and only one to two bars in the next room.  From any other room in the house I cannot connect.
I verified that I have the most recent wireless drivers installed.  The ones it shipped with are the most recent on the Lenovo support site.
I called Lenovo technical support.  After waiting on hold, I was connected, then dropped after another 30 minute on hold.  The second time I called in, I was told I needed to turn on the wireless using the switch.  I informed the tech that I was already connected and that the issue was poor signal.  He then suggested removing Lenovo readycomm, but that is not installed on this S12.  Finally he told me that this is just a netbook, not a laptop and that if I do not like it I should return it.
I am so angry with this poor support I would return it immediately, if it were not for the 15% return fee.
Does anyone else have wireless issues?  Am I mistaken about this being a nice wireless connectivity tool?
At the price I paid, $399, I can dump this on eBay, but I am seriously disappointed.

Hi Forum,
I opened the wireless card slot after reading in other netbook forums that some have had loose antenna connectors. At first I thought that was what I had as one of the leads, the black one, was not seated. It turns out that the connector on the wireless card was bent open.
See pics:

I bent the ring connector closed, reattached the antenna lead, and now I have great signal. Thought you would be interested in the pics.
I am going to call Lenovo and ask them to replace the wireless card, as there is no guarantee the connector is not damaged, but it is working fine for now.

• S12 ION Display Refresh?

My S12 ION (29595FU) with Win 7 seems to stop refreshing the display quite often.  For example, If I move, copy or rename a file, it does not show up until I hit F5.  Then everything is okay.  A reboot always fixes it, but it is annoying.  Anyone else having this problem?
Thanks,
Bill

If the machine is brand new, it might settle down in a few days after windows has sorted itself out.
More than likely its system protection backing up files your altering etc.
As an experinced user I turn off /delete/ uninstall/dont use protection, and run as admin.

• Creating a Windows 7 installation disk for S12-ION (and similar)...

In a recent (now dissapeard) thread the subject of creating a backup Windows 7 Installation disk that will work with the Win7 Home Premuim OA key on the sticker on the bottom of S12-IONs.
Unfortunately that thread got stomped on because it strayed off path.
So, I've started this thread to discuss the afore mentioned subject and request that we do not discuss anything outside that that we are legally allowed to do (and I suggest it might be sensible to avoid making any kind of comment that could be deemed to be outside the acceptable usage policy for these forums).
OK, so, does anyone have any further information on this process?
I know we need to start with a (legally obtained) Win7 install disk.
This can then be altered to operate as any given (or optionally all) version of Windows 7 install disk.
However, does the disk that one alters need to be a specific version?
My guess would be that a Windows 7 Ultimate disk is most likely to work, but I suspect all Windows 7 install disks are essentially identical, bar a configuration that one needs to modify.
Now, one could also, at this point, 'slip-stream' the disk to contain specific drivers, or required other software, for the target hardware (in my case, an S12-ION).
Would this be necessary?
What S12-ION drivers/software need to/can be slipstreamed in this way?
I'm sure there are other questions too...
Anyway, I plan to do some research, and will post what I find, but if anyone else knows anything about either of these processes, please feel free to contribute...
Scott

'Sweet', as I believe 'the kids' say these days.
Though, I'm still going to look into slipstreaming stuff into a disk - essentially I want what I wish Lenovo provided - one disk with all the base-level drivers and Lenovo management software pre-installed - so I can manage my HDD my way.
@omgmog: it's exactly those *ways* (or, rather, those that are legal) that this thread is here to discuss...
Now, an update on my research: I need to stand corrected on one point - Microsoft haven't made it all that easy...
But, unless Lenovo come up with, I dunno, maybe an iso I can just download and burn to disk, I'm going to keep going and see if I can figure out what the best, most hassle free, way of achieving our legal right is.

• Poor Wireless signal

I just bought a HP 20-2110d All-in-One Desktop PC. Had so much difficulty setting it up as it had a poor wireless connectivity. Always only showing 2 bars and connectivity cutting off every now and then.
Called HP support this morning and they led me to "device manager" and reinstalling network adapter. But it still showed a poor signal after that. As my neighbour's signal was showing up, the HP help staff suggested that it was due to signal overlap. He asked me to call my service provider and ask for isp signal channel to be changed.
My question is: why is it that other devices such as my handphones and laptops not have this problem? The signal shown is so much stronger and there have been no connectivity problems.

You are welcome.
Some wireless cards are not very powerful.  It would be good if you could move the router closer to the computer to see if that helps the situation.

• Performance of S12 ION with WinXP?

I currently have Win7 on my S12 ION.  I have 3gigs RAM on my S12 ION.  I am seriously considering wiping my HD and putting WinXP on instead.  I know there are people on these messageboards who own a S12 ION and have gone from WinXP to Win7, or from Win7 to WinXP.  I am interested to read your thoughts...
- How is the performance of the S12 ION with WinXP compared to Win7?
- How difficult was it to switch from Win7 to WinXP?
- What do you miss in WinXP that you could do in Win7?
- How difficult is it to maintain WinXP and get it to work with everything you do?

but i think windows 7 (home premium is on S12 ION.. not the "ugly" starter edition ) .. is a younger fresher system... and forthcoming more accelerated and a better battery consumption driver will show as the power in the near future...
XP is good on S12 ION but i dont think that you got the most of it .. depending on the driver situation (and adobe newer flashplayer) ...

• How to reconfigure the QuickStart key on S12 ION ?

When I got my S12 ION a day before, I instantly wipe out the original OS, and cleanly installed Windows 7 Ultimate edition on it.  It went pretty well, and I was pleased with the performance.
Then I found out that there's a QuickStart key ("QS" key) at the top row of the keyboard.  I pressed it, and it prompt me to select an application to use with the key.  I selected NotePad.exe.  From then on, every time I press that [QS] button in Windows 7, it brings up NotePad.
Now I want to change the associated application to something other than notepad, and suddenly realize that I don't know how to get to the configuration of that key.
Does anyone know who to access the configuration window of that QS key?
Thanks!
DK

Feeling stupid.  I found the answer form the User Guide (pp.21, under Chapter 2: Learning the basics)
To re-define the Quick Start button, select Self-defined program setting
(start → All Programs → Lenovo → Energy Management → Self-defined
program setting).
Well, at least I found the answer.

• S12 ION BIOS

Hi!
I'm searching like crazy for the BIOS already installed on my S12 ION. The BIOS is called 21CN24WW.
There is no BIOS available on the end-user site for this notebook. only for the VIA version.
I have however googled the BIOS 21CN24WW and the first result.
"IdeaPad S12 BIOS updates Nvidia (21CN24WW) - Lenovo Support
Support new key part BIOS Version:Nvidia ...), you can get the information from the Logos on the C cover of the computer."
The link leads to a site that says the following
"Sorry, this document is restricted to Lenovo Field Servicers and/or Call Center Agents only. Please login with the authorized credentials. Thank you."
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT034685
So the BIOS file be it either an .exe or .rom/.img must excist somewhere at Lenovo.
Does anyone have this BIOS file or know a supporter @ Lenovo who could mail it to me?
Thanks

Hi Nordstrom,
I found your bios on the Japanese support site.  Better get it with google unless you can understand Japanese.

• S12 Ion - WinXp vs. Win7?

I would like to read the experiences of people who own the S12 Nvidia ION and either...
1. Had WinXP on the machine and switched to Win7.
2. Had Win7 and switched to WinXP.
How did WinXP run compared to Win7 on the S12 Ion?  Which did you prefer, and why? If you had/have WinXP on the machine, how difficult was it to install and how difficult was it to maintain?

• S12-ION Fan running continuously.

Hi all,
Dunno if this is an problem or not - I have an S12-ION and just recently it's started running the fan all the time (irrespective of CPU load).
Is this a sign of a heat problem?
And, if so, is there anything I can try doing to rectify it?
Or should I just not worry?
(It didn't used to do this - previously the fan would only spin up under high CPU load, now it's spinning all the time)
Scott

Hmmm....
Actually, again, having thought about this some more...
Why?
Why on earth would I want to uninstall my virus scanner?
And leave my netbook vulnerable to attack?
Because the fan's spinning?
Maybe this makes sense in the world of laptops/netbooks - I dunno this is my first laptop/netbook - but, it seems rather like cutting off ones nose to spite one's face.
Also, if it were a software/update issue, wouldn't it just reappear when I reinstall???
So what would I achieve by doing a recovery and re-install, other than wasting my time?
Or is it a case of windows getting clogged up, and so using more cpu's cycles, and so the fan runs more?
Could anyone else confirm that doing a restore and reinstalls is worth doing?
I'd rather not spend days doing something that's not going to make any difference.
But, I'd also rather not ignore something and put it off, just because I don't understand why it should be that way.
And, please don't take offense at this, yigit, but, "reinstall everything" sounds like the sort of advice someone that doesn't actually know what they're talking about would give.

• Poor wireless performance on Qosmio X500-134

I just bought a Toshiba Qosmio x500-134 and there's one thing that bothers me. The wireless conection is very poor.
Ii can say I am very disapointed with that. I had a x205-sli1 model before and the wireless connection was top.
Why in x500 is it so poor?

there are no special wlan settings.i'm using a home network, belkin N+ router, the signal showed is maxximum but runing a ping test there are alot of lost packages(time out).keeping another laptop in same spot to see if there is a diffrence on another machine,no problems on the other one.thats why i'm saying there is a poor wireless conectivity, maybe the wireless card is ok then must be the receiver on it very poor.

• VERY Poor Wireless Signals

Hello everyone! I have a Linksys WRT54G v8 Wireless-G Broadband Router. I receive VERY poor wireless signals from it. There are no frequency interferences, physical obstructions, or anything like that. I have tried channels 1, 6, and 11 (non-overlapping channels), but did not seem to notice a difference. How can I adjust the Wireless -> Advanced Wireless Settings in order to improve the wireless signals? Thank you!

Hi
Is the firmware up to date ?
If not , then upgrade the firmware .
     U can even try channel - 9 !!
Advance wireless settings : RTS threshold - descrease by 42.
                                                  Fragementation - decrease by 42.
Beacon Interval - change to 75 or 50.
Observe the settings.

• S12 Ion RAM upgrade?

Is it possible for me to upgrade the RAM in my S12 Ion from 2gigs to 3gigs? There was one on the Lenovo store with 3 gigs but my coupon wouldn't work with it.
I figured that if it's like my S10, There is RAM built into the motherboard and one RAM slot. I probably need to remove the 1 gig stick from the slot and put in a 2 gig but I would like to make sure before I go for it.
Darald

Windows allways benefits from more RAM.
One of the features of Windows RAM management is that it will always try to allocate a running app's data-space in physical RAM, so the more RAM you have, the more running applications you can have without Windows needing to utilise the swapfile.
Not only that, but individual threads within an app are given their own data-spaces as well.
Now, a quick check of Task Manager tells me I've got over 700 threads running. And I'm 'only' running IE, Messenger and StickyNotes - hardly a lot of things to want to have running at once. Add in a Firewall and Virus Scanner and you've got a lot of data-spaces for Windows to juggle.
The more RAM you give it, the more 'hands' Windows gets to keep everything in the air with.
The performance of the CPU, though important, is secondary to all this.

• S12 ION stuck pixel ?

I have had my S12 ION for a little over a month now.  A few days ago I started seeing a bright blue dot which I think is called a stuck pixel on my display.  Now it is always there and is pretty annoying.
Is there anything I can do to get rid of the bright dot on my screen?
Other then that, I have really enjoyed using this netbook.
Thanks

Hi , akaradar ... you can try to live with that  "little blue alien laser", as my pre-poster says  ....
or use your warranty ... call your local service ... i would try that ...

• Upgrade S12 ION CPU - Atom N270 to Atom 330

Hi Everyone.
I got S12 ION with HDMI slot.
I am really considering doing this or either overlock it, I found a pretty descent thred here in the forum about the overlock and I consider try it out, but beside that I was considering replace the Atom N270 with Atom 330
But as far as I see there are pretty big difference in the Watt power that I dont really fully understand so I want to hear your opinion about it? Does it worthy ? Because otherwise I am satisfy with my S12.
The reason I am doing this is because I want to watch 720p HD through the HDMI on 1900x1600 , I do bealive that my video will be fine on 1080p with better CPU , do you think I am on the right way ?
