Fixed Ipod killed by 1-10 update

My ipod was killed by the 1-10-2006 updater. Symptoms were:
1) Exclamation point folder icon
2) Connecting it to the PC would freeze the PC
3) Ipod Updater/Itunes would not recognize the ipod
4) Hard disk would whirr and click and would have the 'do not disconnect' sign that never went out.
Here's what I did:
1) Got a linux box, fdisked the various partitions, and copied the binary of the 11-17-2005 update over.
2) Eventually, after rebooting it a bunch of times into disk mode, was able to get ipod update to update the ipod.
3) It STILL wasn't recognized, so I
a) opened the case
b) removed bits of loose plastic from around various connectors
c) tightened the hard disk connection
d) (important) unplugged the battery and plugged it back together.
When I plugged it back into the PC, Itunes found it and everything worked fine.

I updated my iPod last night, and today I discovered the same problem all of you are describing. But, after fiddling with it a bit I think I've figured out more details, though none of it helps me fix it. When I play any video that I've downloaded from iTunes, no matter the play length or file size, it plays perfectly fine. But, when I play a video that I've converted outside of iTunes, and if the video is about twenty minutes or longer, it pauses after 30 seconds of playing and then goes silent while the video resumes. I can play short non-iTunes videos okay, but as soon as I play a longer one, kaput. I first noticed it when I was trying to watch an episode of Smallville, and then I tried watching a twenty minute video from IGN. But, when I went to something short, it played with no problems.
Anyone else fine tune the problem? Any other fix besides blasting it and going back to a previous update?

    Try:

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • HELP! iPod no longer works after update

    I've been using my 20gb clickwheel ipod without incident for a year now, my last update had been iTunes 5 and hadn't updated my iPod recently either (why bother..it worked fine?).
    I wanted to purchase music from the iTunes music store, but it wouldn't let me unless I upgraded to iTunes 6 and updated my iPod. OK - so I did that- upgraded iTunes to 6.0.1 and updated tghe iPod using the latest updated dated 2005-10-12. Then the horror begins.
    On the first attempted synch post update - my iPod screen turned into a folder/exclamation point icon and stopped working. I tried resetting by holding down the center button and menu..it restarted and went back to the same folder/exclamation point icon. No luck.
    I've tried restoring it repeatedly and then synching my library back to the now clean and restored iPod and it stops synching at different points and crashes (after 31 songs - crash iTunes - iPod freezes on the "Do not disconnect" screen - strange clicking noise - restore - try again - 58 songs...same... restore ..again...45 songs.. you get the picture).
    It worked fine BEFORE the update except I couldn't purchase music. There has been NO change except installing the updates (it hasn't been jostled, dropped or anything). What can I do? The update killed my iPod?!!!! I am at my wits end!!!!!!
    -Tory

    OK..I've tried many things and my iPod is still hosed after updating. I upgraded my Mac to Tiger. I was told that the there might be some issues with synching using firewire with the new update - so I bought a USB cable and tried synching with that.
    I have the same issue as before. I can restore the iPod, but when I start synching my music from Itunes back to the blank, restored iPod - it synches up anywhere from 20-200 songs and then freezes (spinning beach ball on one song halfway synched for an hour - then force quit iTunes - and start all over again: restore, synch, crash).
    You know, I got burned by the 1st generation 5gb iPod battery issue, then the headphone jack stopped working on my 2nd generation, now my monochrome clickwheel iPod freaks out after Apple forces me to update so I can get my paid music back (it removed, yes, REMOVED my purchased songs because I was still using an older version of iTunes - when I updated to 6 I got them back - how Microsoft is THAT?).
    I am really losing my faith in Apple's ability to make a quality product.I am despondent. If anyone has any advice - I would be most grateful...

  • IPod touch 4g failed to update to 6.1 and now can't recover

    I tried to update my iPod touch 4G to 6.1 from 5.1.1.
    At the beginning iTunes showed an error
    Now my iPod is in the recover mode.
    But iTunes says that it can't connect to update servers.
    So, on the iPod's screen there is only an iTunes logo and a usb cable.

    Mine works now too, i don't know what fixed it. I tried to update it using older version of itunes on another computer and it made it starter but it didn't finish the work. My home computer after 3 days of trying had finally connected to itunes and downloaded the recovery software, however i had to change usb ports for this to happen.
    Not it is back in normal mode, but i lost all my apps.

    I am having trouble with my iPod 5th gen after iOS update. It's in recovery mode and iTunes keeps timing out when I try to restore it. What should I do??? If possible, I would also like to keep all of my data.

    Maybe this will help:
    Troubleshooting
    As with all clickwheel iPods, you can reset this iPod by first toggling the hold switch on and off and then simultaneously pressing the select (center) and menu buttons for approximately 5-10 seconds. This is a common fix should your iPod behave unexpectedly or lock up. Once reset, the iPod should display an Apple logo for a few seconds before showing the main menu. This procedure is similar to rebooting a computer and damages none of your music or data.

  • Is my iPod killing my iBook?

    I'm on my 3rd iPod (meaning that I returned 2 and was given brand new ones by the Apple store followed by a, "this one better break by X date if you need it replaced."). Well, this iPod appears to be fried now too and I'm past X date.
    I've been diligently trying to reset it via my iBook. It's not working and it keeps either automatically shutting down the iBook with no warning or freezing it up (the colored wheel has been spinning for at least the last 30 minutes while nothing else happens). Is this bad?
    I know it's probably time to give up, admit defeat and chuck the iPod (after living its short 1-year life), BUT is it in any way worth it to keep hooking it up to my iBook in hopes of updating/reseting it? Is hooking up the toxic iPod killing my iBook? Help.

  • IPod/iTunes 6 hangs during updating

    I've just spent most of a weekend trying to figure out why a 40GB click-wheel iPod will not sync with iTunes. I'm at a bit of a loss here. I know there are several (long) posts on update issues - perhaps this is just another case. Here's the low-down:
    Gear:
    * iPod 40GB 'click-wheel' model, 3.1 firmware (2005-09-23 update), firewire interconnect direct to iMac (no dock)
    * iMac G4 1GHz, OS X 10.3.9, iTunes 6.0.1, about 1600 songs
    Symptom:
    iPod appears on the desktop and can browse folders. iTunes starts. Hangs during iTunes update on a random song. Usually <20 into the list - but sometimes anything up to song 1000. Flashing 'do not disconnect' symbol freezes on iPod LCD, iMac hangs (Activity Monitor indicates a >90% cpu load on iTunes process, generally requires a 'hard' restart to recover the iMac - even after force-quitting the iTunes process).
    Tried:
    * Reset iPod
    * Restore iPod with 3.1
    * Restore iPod with 3.0.2 (2005-06-26)
    * iPod into disk mode and restore
    * iPod disk verify and erase using OS X Disk Utility, restore firmware
    * New firewire cable
    * iPod into diagnostics mode - run most tests including HDD scan (all pass)
    * iMac disk permissions verify/fix
    * Delete iTunes preferences and restart - library rebuilds
    * Copy music to a new location, delete all iTunes data, now start afresh and
    use add to library to rebuild library
    * Removed songs and entire albums that sync freezes on (just freezes on
    another song)
    * Checked out iMac firewire ports with iSight
    * Discussed with Apple Tech guy at Genius bar, agreed pretty much all steps
    had been covered. iPod exchanged believing something like iPod connector
    to be the issue. No difference.
    So I'm pretty much convinced at this stage the issue lies with the iMac software. iPod and cable have been thoroughly investigated and changed out. iMac firewire ports work with iSight.
    I've seen some posts suggesting deleting and restrong from the 10.3.9 update the iPod driver (iPodDriver.kext). This seems pretty drastic! I'm hesitant to go get a Tiger upgrade - this should work with 10.3.9.
    Apologies for the long post - but I'd be interested to hear views at this point.
    Thanks

    Hey, you the man. I just want to say thank you. I hooked up a just repaired touch wheel iPod to my son's g4 iMAC, and it kept hanging on random songs and even the one's it transferred, it did slowly. I tried everything everyone else has, I did restores and erases forever. And it kept hanging up, so I had to frequently disconnect the iPod to get control back of the computer. This morning I was on the phone with Apple tech for over an hour. His conclusion was that because some of the songs weren't purchased from the Apple Store, I needed to manually transfer each song one at a time. I had to go, so didn't get to try it until later today and same problem. Again I called Apple tech support. Guy was very nice, on phone with him for 90 minutes, he didn't think the first advice made much sense. He gave up in frustration when we couldn't get into the disk utility because iPod kept going to automatic update. He told me to call back tomorrow and speak to a specialist. He said he's never had this much difficulty with an iPod. After the call, I managed to get into the disk utillity and do the erase and repair but didn't do anything. When I finally deactivated the auto update, manually transferring the songs one at a time didn't solve the problem. I read your post, started up after disconnecting the iSight firewire cable, took a chance of activating auto update of songs again, and voila, it transferred all the songs (all 176 of them) in about 10 seconds, like a warm knife through butter. And as they said on Saturday Night Live, it felt "like butter." I will call Apple tomorrow and tell them they really need to do something about this. In the meantime, I'll keep iSight disconnected whenever songs are being transferred into the iPod.
    Again, your advice is much appreciated. Thank you for the post.

       Did you download the new iTunes update that was also released this afternoon? That might be the problem. The new iTunes update came out today as well as the new iOS 7 update and if you haven't downloaded the new iTunes update it may be a compatibility problem so if you didn't, first update to the new iTunes and try again.
