FIXED! K8N Plat. SLI: Odd problem Did Reformat Now Won't Post...:/

Heeeellloo MSI community!      After all the madness I went through; I followed up on wevsspot's link (see his post) & read the bejeebus outta this thread here.
NOTE: The above link is for all NForce 3/4 Mobo owners w/ RAID problems attempting a reformat/upgrade using Window's XP and then suffering an UNENDING cycle of "quick-flash BSOD + auto reboot" assualts...!
In brief, the solution is:
1)  Make a slip-streamed OS CD w/ Nvidia's Nforce 6.70 RAID drivers (or latest version) integrated using Nlite.  (not sure about Autostreamer...)
-1)  But before that, you must have the latest Bios flashed or these "new" Nvidia drivers won't be recognized during OS installation!
The link above is VERY informative & I would not be here yapping about if it wasn't for the sleuthing abilities of one wevsspot!
Cheers to Indigian & all who've taken the time to post!
Evening all.  I usually don't come for help but I feel I've earned a second opinion after working on my PC for 3 days.  After all I've done, this issue is really beginning to worry me.  On Friday I was playing some SP BF2 and then my PC suddenly restarted.  So I started up again & shut down normally and then I fired up CS: Source, after a few maps, another restart.
Hmm, then I uninstalled Nvidia's current graphics drivers and installed the previous version.  Tried CS, same outcome.  Well, I have reformated my PC before w/ success so I figured "its been several months" & now this issue surfaces so why not?
Well, I backed up and dived in.  Had my original MSI Raid driver floppy ready but there was an error so I followed MSI's directions here & loaded up a new floppy and things went fine (I tried both versions- the version at that link & the most current Raid driver version, 5.53 via Nvidia's site.  However, for both versions, the file "nvatabus.inf" in which MSI claims to be there is no where to be found).  Now fasy-forward to the 1st Window's loading screen (loading bars...) after OS installation, I see a BSOD flash and then restart, and restart, etc...
Facts & POE attempts in no particular order:
-My Bios is the original, 3.1.  Apart from the problems I've read here, I have never upgraded it being that I've never really had to.
-I've noticed that rite after OS installation, where I see my status of my Raid config., the version is still 4.81...     & then, the damn restarting begins...
-I have tried switching serial ports from 3 & 4 to 1 & 2. Also disabling the unused ports in the Bios after switching.  As I switched ports for the 1st time, I even deleted my Raid config. and built a new one.
-I have tried unpluging my pata cables, unpluging my USB devices, & unseating my memory as mentioned in a several threads I read here about seeing a BSOD just before Windows loads.
-Whenever I reformated, I had to remove one of my BFG cards and thus "flipping" over the SLI chip on the mobo.  I learned that XP wouldn't load my SLI rig on its 1st run...
-I tried installing XP originally w/ SP1 or slipstreamed w/ SP2, no go.
-Inbetween these hairpulling attemps @ process of elimation, I tried just one of my Maxtors w/ no floppy help and it WORKED.  So that points me to this being a Raid issue.
I apologise for the wall of text.  I think I have tried all avenues to getting this odd problem fixed.  Any advice or instructions would be great.  Thanks for reading.

Cowbell,
During your chipset drivers update (or even possibly during the Windows OS install routine itself) you may have corrupted your original Raid Array.  My suggestion would be to enter your Raid Setup Bios and delete the existing array the build one from scratch.  If you have another computer, extract the RAID drivers from the original MSI setup CD that came with your motherboard and put them on a floppy.  Or if you so choose you could use the RAID drivers from a later chipset driver pack.  I'll leave that up to you.  After you rebuild your RAID array, turn off computer, turn off power supply, remove power cord from power supply, remove m/b battery and move CMOS jumper pin to the clear position.  Leave it like that for at least 10 minutes.  Move CMOS jumper back to save position.  Reinstall motherboard battery and connect power back to your power supply.  Reboot and enter BIOS again.  Re-enable the SATA or IDE ports you are using for your array, enable RAID in the BIOS.  Exit, reboot and enter RAID Bios setup again, make sure your RAID array is present and make sure it is set as a bootable ARRAY.  If everything looks good, reboot once more and enter BIOS.  Make sure your RAID array is showing as a bootable device.  Do the normal stuff such as making sure your optical drive is set as the first boot device etc.
Save, exit.  If all goes well you will  be prompted to press F6 to install 3rd party RAID drivers upon the initial Windows OS installation routine.
Good luck.

The "distortion" as you describe it is static interference that goes through to the amplifier, due to the fact that you do not have a correct connection. If the connector does not fit, do not try to force it.
I would leave the case connectors unconnected for the moment, until you get sound through the spdif out. What type of connector is it to your speakers?
you are correct sir! i did some more research with different keywords after i posted my last post and realized that i needed a 1/8" stereo to RCA converter, so i hopped over to radio shack and purchased the little connector for 4 bucks and plugeed it in and walla. Thanks for the help though.
also to the guy with the link to the front case connections, thanks for the suggestion, i had all of my audio ports connected so that wasnt an issue, but thanks for pointing that out.

  • K8n plat/sli

Question about cool 'n quiet,  i have done all the steps that are stated in the other post i have the k8neo 4 plat/sli with bios 3.0 <could this be my problem.  the cpu speed and voltage of my e3 venice doesnt change what so ever.
    Thanks
    Andrew

Your CPU is a Venice one. As I know, supporting Venice and San Diego CPU needs BIOS support. You can use other supported CPU such as Winchestor etc. to flash BIOS to the latest version 3.4. Of course, please enter BIOS to Load Optimized defaults after flashing BIOS.Then change CPU to the Venice to verify.
The BIOS 3.3 and 3.4 might cause shut down issue when user set up RAID.From your deployment, you only have one SATA HDD, it seems that you have not set up RAID. There is no problem updating BIOS to 3.4.
You mentioned the HDDs are not recognized after you flash BIOS to 3.4. The following instructions below are for your reference.
*After flashing BIOS, please make sure enter BIOS to Load Optimized defaults first, then check Integrated Peripherals-->IDE Function Setup-->SATA1&SATA2-->Enabled(supposed your SATA HDD is connected on SATA1 or SATA2); Save&exit setup; then re-enter BIOS to verify if your HDDs are recognized in Hard Disk Boot Priority in Advanced BIOS Features. If they are detected correctly, please set the HDD with OS to 1st Boot Device. Of course, you should first set Hard Disk as 1st Boot Device. Gook Luck!

  • Need Help ASAP! 3200+/K8N Plat. Voltage problem

    Hi,
I have been having alot of problems lately with my mobo (K8N Neo Platinum & AMD64 3200 + Newcastle) with skipping in games and low benchmark scores.
I opened up PC Alert 4 to find the alarm going off and a problem highlighted in my voltages
What do i need to do to fix this problem?
    PC Specs:
    Athlon 64 3200+ Newcastle
1 GB OCZ PC3500 Performance Series DDR Ram
MSI K8N Neo Platinum nForce 3 250 motherboard
    BFG 6800OC Video card
    IBM 7200 RPM Harddrive
    470w Enermax NoiseTaker Series PSU
    Lian-Li PC-65 Case

I have posted countless times on this but feck it, here goes lol.
You have the same awesome card as me Phourstar or at least I think you have, in your signature it doesn't say if your card is a GT or an Ultra.
If it is an ultra then check the BIOS on the card (is in the 6800 Ultra when gfx options opened at the top). The 6800 Ultra (and some GT's) have been sent out with unstable BIOS's from a lot of different companies, do a google search and you will find a lot of people experiencing the same problem as you.
There are a number of BIOS's avalaible for the 6800 Ultra and I tried quite a few trying to fix this problem but the only one that works without any problems is this one:
    http://whitebunny.demon.nl/download?file=vid_bios_nvidia_gf6800ultra_5.40.02.10.15.zip
You also need to get nvflash (free program).
You can try altering your clock speeds, basically if the 3D and 2D speeds are set the same it makes the card A LOT more stable (they are almost the same speed anyway, normally only 25mhz difference, can overclock or underclock to make them the same I recommend overclock).
This helped my stability a lot but didn't cure the problem. Since downloading the above BIOS though my card has been running 100% stable.
If your card is a GT... I have heard there are GT BIOS's available so have a look around.

We had a unit do the same thing that you are talking about here. I found after two days of test that it was the Heatsink. It had the grease but it was not seated just right. When I redid the Heat sink the issue went away. I had to clean them both and then surface the Heatsink with 600 grt paper.
When I put it back together it worked fine.
I can't say that this is it, what is wrong with yours but it does and is doing the same things that we had going on with us.
You might check this and see. Because it would not boot no matter what we did. And it will heat up and trip out in a second.
And this is after the machine had run playing games for a week or so. I thinkt he Heat sink warped from the heat. I have never seen one do this before but I guess it could happen. Any way it fixed ours.
Do You mean the CPU heatsink, or GPU heatsink? -
By the way, who wants to guess if I was blessed or not - and if buying a new $150+ PSU really helped
Please, any more help would be great

  • K8n plat sli no post/ NVRAID question

so my mobo wouldnt post, and i sent it in for rma. when i get it back how can i recover my nvraid 0 raidset i created? should i be ok with just setting it up, then trying to boot to it or what? has anyone had experience with this?

I don't think that matters. It doesn't on a VIA RAID controller I have. When I switch the two drives, RAID is functioning just normal. I think the same goes for my NVRAID on the board below ...

  • Neo4 K8N Plat SLI - Boot Disk Failure :(

Having installed Windows XP Proffesional, I installed the graphics card drivers and was asked if I wanted to restart. I went ahead and restarted, and was confronted with the "boot disk failure..." error message.
I eventually decided to reinstall Windows but when the "press any key to boot from CD" message came up, in an act of defiance, I decided that I wouldn't press any key at all.
I was suprised to see Windows load up.
Booting without the Windows CD in the drive results in the error. With the CD in the drive it boots - what could be causing this? The mobo, the HDs, the OS?

    The Samsung ... yes, that's a sad story ...
I'm one of the people who believes that two disks in a SATA Raid don't nessecarely have to be the same brand. It even haves some pro's to not use the same types of disks, but that's another topic. They should, however, be the same size of course. I used one Samsung spinpoint (120GB) and a Western Digital Caviar (120GB) in a Raid-0 array. On the Dutch forum this array is known as "RAID-UI"  . It worked pretty well, no crashes, pretty fast data transfers ... but then, one day, I had a hickup using Ghost. I saw: Creating image of C: 23% complete ... And it stood there for a very long time. After that, Ghost shut down giving an I/O error. I investigated the error and becam aware that there were disk errors on C: (one partition of two on the SATA RAID-UI). I had the whole lot repaired using CHKDSK and everything seemed OK again.
I looked in the VIA Raid tool and saw a difference in size between "capacity" and "real capacity" of about 0.064MB on the Samsung. Well, nothing to cry about yet. But I kept on getting disk errors and I kept on having to run CHKDSK. After a week I lost over 25MB and every day I lost more to bad clusters. Knowing that two striped disks have to be the same size, I started to wonder when this raid would crash. But, since I don't like the idea of suddenly loosing a 220GB disk array, I decided to throw out both the Samsung and the WD. (The WD is in another PC). I bought two Seagate disks and didn't go back to Samsung, because of the terrible answer I got from Samsung Holland.
I mailed them about the broken disk and asked for a replacement (disk is about 13 months old and there's a two year waranty). They simply refused to give me a replacement. They stated that I probably messed around with the disk, cause of the bad clusters. Stupid anser, to my opinion. The disk simply died from one day to the other.
Note that this disk has always hung right behind an inlet fan! So it never got hot.
I'm very happy with the seagates now. They're more quiet and ... FASTER! I get data-transfers of about 94-96MB/s, while with the other array the max was about 88MB/s.

  • Problem - Moving Files, Now Won't Stop

I started moving some folders or files, to another location.  But then asked the process to stop.  Now Mac OS shows me a window with "Stopping..." which had been running for days, without stopping.
Is there any way I can resolve this?  I have put my Mac to sleep since this started, and have not shut down the machine.
Other files on the Mac seem to be now not showing up in my finder, mainly the pictures in my images folder.  Will I end up losing the files?
Thanks a lot for the help!  I am really panicking on this one.

    HDD SEAGATE 200GB SATA
    Leadtek 6800GT PCI Express
    WIN XP Pro SP2 (OEM)
    Pioneer DVD Writer
    Audigy 2 ZX
All brand new and no overclocking undertaken.
My problem is that my system is a nightmare to get to boot/post. After I first built it last week it booted up fine the first time. Seemed stable as I ran through the Doom 3 demo and Thief 3 to give the system a bit of stress. It worked fine for hours CPU was fine, temp about 33-36 degrees at the time. Shutdown and went to bed.
The next day went out to boot up and this is where the problems started to occur.
I hit the power button the case fans spin, cpu coooler fan starts spinning, blue LED on motherboard comes on, the DLED's hang at chipset initiallization. Eventually after hitting the power up button on the case and resetting about ten times the system finally boots up, runs for hours like a dream, will reboot with no problems.
Next day cold boot same problem.
I pulled everything apart, pulled out the cmos Batt etc... Left over night.
I put it together outside the case on insulated material with 1 DIMM of RAM, HDD, Graphics Card. Same problem it eventually booted. Then it reboots fine first go while adding more and more hardware.
This is the problem once it does boot up I can reboot non stop as often as I like with no problems. If I switch off over night, when I go to cold boot in the morning it is a nightmare to get going. Is this something endemic to this board or is it a problem my particular motherboard. To me this inidcates that all the components work and that it is a motherboard problem.
I just want to know as it is only a week old and I can RMA for a new board if I do it in the next few days.
    Thanks.

i'm starting to  think that the problem could be related to the Graphics Card or PCI express slot. I did a second strip down of the system and noticed that when I removed the graphics card it hung on the DLED 'initalize floppy controller" and did not hang on the  'early chipset initialzation' . From BIOS changed the system setup to not to seek for A:floppy, then when I reboot (cold left overnight) without the graphics card it goes through to fully boot, can hear the HD booting up and get 4 green DLED's.(no output without a screen connected of course)  The only trouble is that it virtually won't boot with my Leadtek 6800gt Graphics card at all now, it is taking 20 to 30 goes on a cold boot. However when it does it has been running for hours ok. I notice also that when I updated to the latest Nvidia Drivers, Thief 3 would start crashing in certain sections and rebooting the machine.   Could this be the problem isolated stuffed Card or PCI express slot.

  • MSI K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum / HDD_LED Problem

    Hello,
First off I would like to say that MSI boards rock! I've always been happy with them, in fact this is my fourth MSI board. The board is K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum.
Unfortunately, I'm having a problem with this one. The problem is minor, but it shouldn't happen, at least I don't think. The problem is that even though the hard drive activity wire is properly connected to HDD_LED, it is not working with my SATA drive. No light at all!
I read in newsgroups that there are people with this same problem (although not necessarily with this same board). I haven't found a solution to this yet. So my inquiry here is:
    1. Is there anyone else with this exact board with a SATA drive that can confirm his/her HDD_LED light is also not working with a SATA drive?
    2. Does MSI have a fix/solution for this?
    Thank you.
