Fixed Layout Epub: Need switch from spreads to 1-up upon orientation change

I'm getting desperate. We are working on something for a client, and have a tight deadline. We're stuck with a facing-pages InDesign document, and have the Epub up and running as spreads.
Unfortunately, the client really wants it so that when you turn the iPad to portrait, the pages are no longer spreads, but 1-up. They are very demanding on this count. We've been stuck in this project without anyone who's actually done this kind of thing before, so we're learning as we go along, and can't figure this one out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
So, tldr, need spreads in landscape, 1-up in portrait. Help!

Check this out…it may be your only hope:

  • Important Video Series on Fixed Layout EPUB from InDesign CC

I'm happy to announce that Anne-Marie Concepcion has released a video series on Lynda.com about creating Fixed Layout EPUB from InDesign CC. It's up-to-date to the latest InDesign CC version (October 2014).
    Here's the link:
    http://www.lynda.com/InDesign-tutorials/Creating-Fixed-Layout-EPUBs-InDesign-CC/169624-2.h tml
You can get a free week trial with Lynda.com when you register.

Sorry guys... Wish I'd seen this earlier. I could've told you that highlighting and note taking capabilities are disabled intentionally in fixed layout EPUBs and Kindle KF8 books.
The only time you will see an FXL book that does support highlighting is if is in either B&N or Amazon's "Page Perfect" or "Page Replica" format - which is basically just a packaged PDF of sorts that can be read through Kindle and Nook apps (Other college book apps like kno.com and the old CourseSmart support Page Replica, too. CourseSmart was recently merged in with VitalSource, however, so I don't know what they are doing these days WRT page replicas). iBooks does not support any sort of print page replica. It's EPUB 3 FXL or iBooks Author only for Apple.

  • Interactivity samples in fixed-layout epub exported from InDesign!

    Hi,
Make an Indesign "Print" file and several seconds after, send your client a real interactive fixed-layout epub.
To do it for free, just take a look for samples to Fanfan la Tulipe, searching "fanfan michel allio" on iTunes!

    Hi,
Have you applied superscript via Control Panel or Character Panel's fly out menu? I am asking this because if you have specified via open type settings, then this will not be honored.

  • Fixed Layout EPUBs in Adobe Indesign CC 2014

    Hi Friends,
I'm fascinated with the prospects of the Fixed Layout EPUBs.   In the few video tutorials that are more current, Adobe host shows the ability to PREVIEW the EPUBs using the menu  item OBJECT > INTERACTIVE > Epub Previewer.  But no go.
So, I've now installed from Creative Cloud, the Extend Script tool kit as well as Extension Manager.   I also installed Edge Inspect CC.
Am I on the right track to find or install the Interactive > Fixed Layout EPUB Previewer?    I need your guidance and have not found anything through my searches online.
I exported my Fixed Layout EPUB yesterday and the slider I created by following one of the few tutorials caused some sort of problem because that entire SPREAD was blank, although all other pages were present.
    Thanks for any guidance.
    Sincerely
    mary

Hi Steve, I am a regular subscriber to Creative Cloud and have updated all apps.  My version of Adobe InDesign does show 2014.1 under About InDesign.
Believe it or not, one of the more helpful videos out in Adobe TV land showed interactive under the Object menu:
See 5:30 on this page: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/how-to/interactivity-fixed-layout-epub.html?set=indesign- -key-techniques--epub-fixed-layout  I finally found the answer here at Adobe forums (monica).   Now I have it installed in the panel on the right.
I'm on an iMac and use all Apple products.   I've tossed Windows to the wind.
Thank you so much for your support.

  • Fixed layout ePub not display truetype font properly when uploaded to Amazon

I've created a kids book with inDesign CC which works fine on iPad but when I upload the book to Amazon KDP, the font which is a truetype font and not protected doesn't display properly. It has unusual spacing between the charaters and sometimes the letters overlap each other.  Can i embed this font somehow to have it display properly? I can't find an option anywhere to do that. Or will I have to change the font entirely?  Many thanks.

    Hi Yves,
Yes, it is an SIL license. I am not using Allatuq anymore, I switched to Quicksand which I got from fontsquirrel.com.
Yes, there is a fixed layout epub option in inDesign CC 2014:
It even has some default sizing options though I have gone with a custom size to account for larger devices, desktop reading etc and am hoping that it's going to work.
The Kindle previewer (desktop version) displays perfectly.
The online previewer has had some display issues with what looks like drop shadows on some images but i'll need to look at the actual file on multiple devices to see what the reality is.
There are some inconsistencies between how the fonts look in the previewers. The online one is not perfect and the desktop previewer displays exactly as designed so again, I won't really know until I can get my hands on the devices. There is also a sizing issue with the online previewer that the desktop previewer doesn't seem to have. And then there will be the issue that the "purchase" file isn't consistent with the preview file you download so not sure how it will all pan out yet.
I had lots of overlapping and other character spacing issues until I changed my font to the OTF Quicksand with the SIL License. I'm hoping the drop shadows are just an issue with the online previewer.
And I'm hoping my conclusion is correct that the OTF with the SIL licenses work for embedding so long as you remove the encryption and replace the encrypted font with the orignal version (and include the license). And I'm hoping that is allowed.

  • Fixed Layout EPUB is not displaying correctly in any of the popular epub readers.

    Hi,
After creating the doc in the Indesign cc, I exported it to the fixed layout epub format. The result was catastrophic! The images, text, font size - everything was chaos. I needed the epub to be working in ipads and android tablets.
Can anybody help? Need to deliver it to my customer on priority.
I tried the output in ibooks, Aldiko, ADE and a few other popular readers.
    Thx
    VJ

    Hi Ananda,
Adobe Digital Editions has come up with a new update ADE 4. You can view your Fixed Layout EPUB here. Please note that ADE 4 on Mac works fine with FXL EPUB exported from InDesign CC 2014, you might see some issue on Windows though. We are aware of the issues and the team is working on fixing these issues with ADE on Windows.
Readium is also a good reader which displays FXL EPUB fine.

  • No fixed-layout EPUB export at 144ppi?

Just curious. I created a nice EPUB in InDesign, all my images are full-page/screen, 1024x768. I exported it as a fixed-layout EPUB and specified 150ppi to cover the iPad's Retina resolution. However, Apple's iBooks wouldn't accept it due to the pixel dimensions being too large. I had to re-export at 96ppi (which was then accepted on iBooks Store). I was hoping for 144ppi, which would be equivalent to an iPad's retina resolution (2048x1536), but it's not an option in the pulldown menu. Am I off-track here? Any idea if this needs to be addressed? Thank you.

Currently InDesign does not let you enter your preferred resolution  while exporting. it has to be from the available choices-72,96,150,300 ppi.
To allow the user to be able to pick his own resolution setting is something which is in our backlog for EPUB Enhancements and might get addressed in later updates.

  • Hyperlink Problem when Creating Fixed Layout ePub

Hi guys, not sure if anyone can help...
I've created a fixed layout ePub from a print document and everything works perfectly apart from I can't get hyperlinks to work.
Originally I'd set up the hyperlinks on my text which didn't work. After a bit of digging around I found some documentation stating that text hyperlinks don't work and that they need to be fired from an image. Also, internal links (to other pages) don't work, only links to external URLs - fortunately for me - all my required links are to external URLs, however, they still don't appear to work... does anybody have any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong?
I'm testing with Redium on Windows 7 and iBooks on iPad Air
    Thanks in Advance
    Kindest regards
    Poll

    Hi Poll,
The hyperlinks are set on what kind of objects? If the external hyperlinks are applied on a text frame or a rectangle, it won't work. There are two cases that work:
    1. Hyperlink on images
    2. Hyperlink on objects in a group and the group is set to rasterise from Object Export Options dialog.
What is your case which is not working? Please elaborate.
    Regards,
    Pooja

  • Missing cover on Fixed Layout ePub in iBooks

    Hello.
My client is having a problem with the cover of their book disappearing after they open it in iBooks. I generated the Fixed Layout ePub from inDesign CC 2014 and had the same problem until I updated the OS on my iPad a few days ago. I suggested the client do the same (freshly updated yesterday to OS 8.0.2) but it has not resolved the cover issue. Anyway have any suggestions on what may be causing this and how this can be fixed?

Initially (two weeks ago) I had chosen a separate cover image but when I tested the file on my iPad, the cover would disappear and all I would see is the half title page. My workaround was to add the cover image as a 1st page, rasterize the first page when making the cover, then also export the full book including the cover page as if it was part of the text so if the cover disappeared it would still show in place of the half title page. After we updated the OS on the iPad (1 week ago) I didn't need to do that anymore, but the client seems to still be having problems and she had also updated the OS at my suggestion.

  • Fixed Layout Epub: 1st left page always blank.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here.
I'm running the latest edition of InDesign 2014 CC.
Basically I want the 1st page of the document to be on the left-hand side of the spread, so that my graphics make sense as I've placed them in the document. Like this:
However, after I export the file in Fixed Layout Epub, I get this result, with the first page on the right-hand side of spread instead:
I've tried export options, "Based on document layout" and "Enable Synthetic Spreads." I've used the export option Export Range "2-9" hoping it would start on page 2 (first page of the story). And I've also tried changing the layout so that the first page is page 1 in the InDesign Layout... all with the same result.
If you can throw me a bone here, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Ehren

Just start your document as usual on page one. You don't need to manipulate the pages position on the pages panel as shown on your screenshot. Once you Start Page Numbering at 2 it will adjust automatically.

  • Missing "bookmarks" option in fixed-layout-epub export panel-?

Hi everyone, I'm having an issue exporting a fixed layout epub with bookmarks.
The "Bookmarks" option is not present/visible/showing up in the export options: I only have "none", "file name", "Multi level". But I do have bookmarks in the document.
I had canceled old bookmarks and recreated them, but nothing changed.
I really can't figure out the what the problem is!
Any suggestion will be really appreciated… Thanks.

I understand that you need the newest version (InDesign CC 2014.1) to accomplish what you want with EPUB.
But if you have a Creative Cloud subscription, you can download BOTH that version (the current one) AND also install InDesign CC (which came out in 2013), as well as InDesign CS6. All can be installed simultaneously!
As I described above, I think you unintentionally muffed it by installing a trial on top of your installation. Both should be uninstalled.
Then with Creative Cloud install the latest version and make sure it's working.
To download an older version from Creative Cloud, select the Apps menu in the CC application. Scroll down till you see "Filters & Version" In that section, you will see the older versions which you can also install.

  • Finding errors in fixed-layout EPUB

When I try to export my 58-page document from InDesign CC as a fixed-layout EPUB, Adobe Digital Editions reports the file cannot be opened due to errors.
It exports fine as a PDF.
I am new to this. Can anyone share the process I need to follow to find the unidentified errors? Thanks

Run your .epub file through an epub checker like this: pagina GmbH Publikationstechnologien: EPUB-Checker

  • How to add audio to fixed layout epub

    Hi,
I'd like to know if adding audio to a fixed layout epub is possible or planned for InDesign? Specifically for read-aloud books—with highlighting each word. I know this can be done with a painfully manual process in the HTML. However it would be swell if it could be done in InDesign somewhat less excruciatingly slow?
I've read Pariah Burke's book on adding read aloud audio, but now with the new Fixed Layout capability it's out of date. Anyone know of other sources of info on this?
    Sue Campbell

The IDs on <span>s are in the update just released yesterday.
When I was leading the EPUB team, I would have said that supporting an SMIL workflow for InDesign was extremely unlikely.
External tools are needed to map the IDs to the audio clips (that's what the SMIL file does) and then it all needs to get packaged up.
ID could do all the packaging of course, but it can't make the SMIL file and until ID does the export you don't know what the IDs are going to be.
So I always suspected that this would always be a post processing step that would have to occur entirely after the export and thus nothing for InDesign to participate in.
I found this book very useful in learning about the SMIL workflow - http://iampariah.com/books/creating-fixed-layout-ebooks - but of course the rest of it (published in 2013) is out of date since we're exporting the FXL from InDesign. There are obviously other sources to talk about how to do this.
    I hope that helps.

  • Include bold on Fixed layout Epub.

Hi everybody, I'm really sorry for my english. I'm still working on it.
I come here today with a major doubt. I never worked with fixed layout epubs before, but one of my clients needs a very long manual for one of her products and within it has formatting that can't be supported by a common epub file, so I decided to give a try to fixed layout epubs, everything was great except for one thing. I don't understand why, but it doesn't matter how many times I export, the words that have bold as attribute are shown as regular on Adobe digital editions. At first I thought it was a digital editions' thing, but my client send me some captures (She was testing it at Ibooks) and it was the same. I've been looking information like crazy the whole day, but I can't find anything. The only thing I found was that the fonts attributes to be specified in the css file, I opened at Calibre and I they were there, the bolds and italics and everything, but when I preview the file on Digital Editions, Nothing. Can someone help me? As I said above it is a pretty long document and it has a lot of bolded words so it would be really complicated to edit the line of code at dreamweaver for each word if that's a solution?

Hi BobLevine, Thank you so much for the quick response, here is a capture I just made and my client's from ibooks

  • In a fixed-layout epub is there a way to turn off the faux spine effect for just one pair of pages?

I'm formatting a graphic novel as a fixed-layout epub.  Because the pages are generated in Manga Studio with an intended print target, it by far makes the most sense to just use a single, large image for each page.  I'm coding the .opf, .xhtml, and .css files by hand, and I more or less understand everything I'm doing.
Because the pages are often full bleed, I actually want the faux book chrome afforded by having <meta property="ibooks:binding">true</meta>.  The shadow effect in the gutter gives a nice deliniation between the pages without me having to do anything additional with the formatting.
However... a handful of pages in the book are two-page spreads.  These look good enough with the shadow spine in the middle, but they would obviously look better without it.  What I'd like to do is identify these particular page pairs as two-page spreads and turn the binding chrome off for just that page pair.  I could of course "fake it" by adding a shadow to the pages themselves (except the spreads) and turning off the binding chrome on the entire book, but it'd be a lot easier to be able to do it in software.
Apple's formatting guide mentioned nothing of the sort, and searching for a while hasn't turned up anything (not even anyone asking the same question so far as I can tell).  I'm guessing this isn't possible, but it never hurts to ask.  Anybody know of a way to do this?

Just found this... Sorry to waste the post...
