Fixed layout with inDesign CC 9.3

Hello,
I think I use the latest version of InDesign (I just did the update), but I can not export my  .idd documents to the format .epub and preserving the layout (justified text, skip lines, paragraphs, titles).
It would be really great of you to help me because I despair, I tried everything to keep the layout but in vain.
The strangest thing is that when i look to the tutorials,  when exporting to ePub format, I see that the dialog box offers two epub format including epub ( fixed layout)
In my version they only propose one format and each time it's like my layout is ruined. I just know how to keep my layout.
thank you in advance.

Can you please give me a link to the update ? Beacause i cant find it...
i have to precise that i use an old version of Mac OS X. Is it possible that the update isn't available for me ?

  • [VB] Opening PageMaker layouts with InDesign Server

I have numerous PageMaker 7.0 layouts that I need to open with a script running on InDesign CS4 Server.  These layouts open correctly using InDesign CS4 Desktop.  InDesign does a conversion on the layout but they do open correctly.  Does anyone know how to open these layouts from a script?
When I attempt to open these layouts, using the Application.Open method, I get the following error:
Cannot open the file "test.pmd".  Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing.
Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sheldon

    Hi Sheldon,
With CS4, InDesign Server no longer supports opening PageMaker files. This info is included in the Release Notes. InDesign CS4 will still open them so you could pursue a solution there.

  • Blurb book precision layout with InDesign

I'm working on a photographic project which I want to end up as a Blurb book. I can use either Blurb's own BookSmart software or InDesign templates/a PDF export preset for this.
However, I don't think BookSmart will allow me to freely and very precisely place and resize photos where I want them, so I choose to use InDesign CS4 (Mac) for this. Here's an example of what I want to do:
I could resize each photo in Photoshop first, but I need to try out different sizes within the layout before comitting, meaning I probably need to do this in InDesign. And just dragging freely with the mouse won't do because I need to repeat the exact same layout for the next pages.
So how do I very accurately resize an image to say 7cm width and place the next one 1cm next to it?
And has anyone here tried designing book layouts for Blurb before? Any tips or suggestions for a Blurb newbie?

I didn't quite understand how to use it but it gave me some ideas to create a new master page myself.
It now looks like this (click on the image to make it larger):
I made two frames (for the pictures) to the correct size and placed a third frame in between to add space. There's also a frame underneath for text.
In case you're wondering, it's all about stereo (3D) pictures, and picture size along with the space in between is the key to getting it right.
So I'm trying to figure out what the most flexible and easiest way of experimenting with sizes/placement would be, before actually printing. I could of course go completely "analog", print out the photos in various sizes, cut them out, then place them next to each other on a table to try out with my 3D glasses, take note of what works in order to make appropriate adjustments in InDesign.
But allowing for flexible and precise adjustments in InDesign and/or Photoshop would be easier if it works...

  • Important Video Series on Fixed Layout EPUB from InDesign CC

I'm happy to announce that Anne-Marie Concepcion has released a video series on Lynda.com about creating Fixed Layout EPUB from InDesign CC. It's up-to-date to the latest InDesign CC version (October 2014).

Sorry guys... Wish I'd seen this earlier. I could've told you that highlighting and note taking capabilities are disabled intentionally in fixed layout EPUBs and Kindle KF8 books.
The only time you will see an FXL book that does support highlighting is if is in either B&N or Amazon's "Page Perfect" or "Page Replica" format - which is basically just a packaged PDF of sorts that can be read through Kindle and Nook apps (Other college book apps like kno.com and the old CourseSmart support Page Replica, too. CourseSmart was recently merged in with VitalSource, however, so I don't know what they are doing these days WRT page replicas). iBooks does not support any sort of print page replica. It's EPUB 3 FXL or iBooks Author only for Apple.

  • Fixed Layout ePub – OpenType features not working

    Hi,
I'm working on a ePub with fixed layout using InDesign CC 2014.
I have used some OpenType features like small caps and old style figures for numbers - but they don't appear correct in the ePub.
    What can I do?
    Thanks for your help
    Almute

The small caps are wrong in Source Sans Regular. This are not correct small caps . This seams to be missing in the font.
But in italic style you will find correct small caps. They only work in InDesign not in ePub.
And if you look in my images (first from InDesign, second from Radium - iBooks looks the same) you can see many difference between InDesign and ePub.
Note the word "pfiffig", the I at the beginning of "Igor" in second paragraph and the "a" in the italic paragraph.
    This is very frustrating!

  • Fixed layout ePub - hyperlinks not working?

A question: I am making a fixed layout ePub for Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing. The file contains lots of text and some graphics and links to a website. However, when I export the fixed layout ePub, all the hyperlinks die. I read from many forums that this is very common and couldn't yet find a way around it.
Is there a way to have a fixed layout ePub WITH working hyperlinks, or this combination not possible with Indesign CC?

They should be working if you've updated InDesign CC 2014 to the latest update (October release):

  • Adobe Indesign 2014 CC export epub with Fixed Layout

When I export a book with he new beautiful new export filter "E Pub with fixed Layout" and send him to the central bookstore in the nederlands... They testing the epub and give tree errors
Filename contains spaces, (this i can repair, but many work)
date value '19-06-2014' does not follow recommended syntax as per http://www.w3.org/TR/NOTE-datetime:19-06-2014 class java.lang.IllegalArgumentException DAY_OF_MONTH, this error i can not place (we work with a dutch system and ist standard setting)!!
item (iTunesMetadata.plist) exists in the zip file, but is not declared in the OPF file, this error i can not place.
    Have you a suggestion
    Geert

    Better explain

“item (iTunesMetadata.plist) exists in the zip file, but is not declared in the OPF file

”
The issue: If I get this message, it means that I’ve already loaded my ePub into iTunes. iTunes inserts this code automatically into the file. Why? Dunno. Probably something it thinks it needs?
    How to solve it:
One way to solve this is to create a fresh ePub version of the file and NOT load that copy into iTunes before running the check. Make a duplicate ePub file of the ebook after it passes the test, and LOAD THE COPY into iTunes, keeping the original file pristine and error-free!’

  • How do I create a fixed layout landscape-only epub3 in Indesign?

    Hi
I have been trying to create a fixed layout epub3 from indesign without results.
What I've done is to create a book with 4 pages in layout format 1034px/768px, each of them with text and pictures. I gave the text a style with the paragraph and exported in epub3 format.
When I upload this to the ipad it works as a epub2, the layout is not fixed.
When I open the files and read the code it actually is like a epub2, there is no fixed layout meta tag, there is no page dimension in each page, in the css the body size is auto and so on.
I also opened the files and added without any result the following in the .opf file.
<meta property="rendition:layout">pre-paginated</meta> (this should create the fixed layout option)
<meta property="rendition:orientation">landscape</meta> (this should create a landscape only view)
<meta property="rendition:spread">none</meta> (this should create a one page at a time view)
Is there a way of achieving what I want or it simply is a functionality not yet introduced?
    Thanks for any advice

InDesign CS6 or earlier is not designed for creating fixed layout EPUB files. Essentially it would have to be done in a very painful, very manual process. Anne-Marie Concepcion describes the process in this Lynda.com video:

  • Fixed Layout EPUBs in Adobe Indesign CC 2014

    Hi Friends,
I'm fascinated with the prospects of the Fixed Layout EPUBs.   In the few video tutorials that are more current, Adobe host shows the ability to PREVIEW the EPUBs using the menu  item OBJECT > INTERACTIVE > Epub Previewer.  But no go.
So, I've now installed from Creative Cloud, the Extend Script tool kit as well as Extension Manager.   I also installed Edge Inspect CC.
Am I on the right track to find or install the Interactive > Fixed Layout EPUB Previewer?    I need your guidance and have not found anything through my searches online.
I exported my Fixed Layout EPUB yesterday and the slider I created by following one of the few tutorials caused some sort of problem because that entire SPREAD was blank, although all other pages were present.
    Thanks for any guidance.
    Sincerely
    mary

Hi Steve, I am a regular subscriber to Creative Cloud and have updated all apps.  My version of Adobe InDesign does show 2014.1 under About InDesign.
Believe it or not, one of the more helpful videos out in Adobe TV land showed interactive under the Object menu:
See 5:30 on this page: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/how-to/interactivity-fixed-layout-epub.html?set=indesign- -key-techniques--epub-fixed-layout  I finally found the answer here at Adobe forums (monica).   Now I have it installed in the panel on the right.
I'm on an iMac and use all Apple products.   I've tossed Windows to the wind.
Thank you so much for your support.

  • Indesign Fixed Layout EPUB Export problems

I am trying to export a fixed layout book using InDesign. I used the InDesign CC2014. I am working on a PC. I can read my previously hand-coded version done with Dreamweaver and validated with Pagina using the Firefox epub reader extension.
The exported version from InDesign does not have fixed text. The text has spread out all over the page and some of the words are actually scrambled. Some letters are on top of each other. The file itself validates with no errors using Pagina. But it is not readable as fixed layout using the Firefox Epub Reader Extension.
Is this a problem with my epub reader? Or is this a problem with the export?
Has anyone tested a file on a PC with an epub reader other than Calibre or Readium?

    Hello,
I just tested on Readium and it looks fine there using the Readium app on Google Chrome. (PC version). I'm not releasing books on Apple, so I will not be testing on Mac.
I will probably be testing for Kobo, I was hoping for a browser extension on Mozilla that it would work on.
    Many thanks,

  • Fixed layout epubs from InDesign in Adobe Digital Editions look terrible...what is going on?

I am preparing a fixed layout v3.0 epub from an INDesign CC 2014 document.  The book is 178 pages with embedded imges throughout.  The resulting epub when opened in Digital Editions looks ghastly...enormous overlapping type; epub said to have 758 pages when the original has 178 pages.  The same file opened in iBooks looks beautiful.
    What's wrong with Digital Editions?
Anyone having the same problem?  Is there a fix?

Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).

  • Where to sell fixed layout ePubs created with ID CC 2014?

I'm wondering where I can sell my eBooks created with the fixed layout ePub3 option in InDesign CC 2014.
I have already uploaded my first book to Apple iBook Store and it is online there.
But are there other stores where I can sell my book? What is with Google Play, Kindle, Kobo?
    Has anyone already experiences?
    Thanks for your helps
    Almute

Here's a chart that Anne-Marie Conception referred to in her webinar on Fixed Layout EPUB from InDesign CC 2014 which tells which features are supported by which platforms for EPUB3:
EPUB 3 Support Grid | BISG
Presumably, if a platform supports the feature, then it should be publishable on their bookstore.

  • InDesign Fixed Layout to Kindle (KF8)

    Hey Guys,
I am new to the ePub world and was wondering if there is anyway I could produce a Fixed layout for Kindle,(.KF8). The file was built in InDesign CC 2014 and as far as I can tell they read very well on iOS devices. Are there any tips or suggestions on how to convert an Indesign file into a .Kf8 file, or another format that Kindle will accept/read. I know that changing to re-flowable could help, however the title is graphic/illustration heavy and when saved as re-flowable the layout messes up completely. Is there a way that I could make it re-flowable without messing up the layout?
Extra Tips and suggestions regarding how to deal with ePub files is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Just open your ePub file in Kindle Previewer and it'll be converted to .mobi.

  • Recommended way to design a book chapter with a set of fixed layouts?

I am starting on a book and am trying out Indesign CS6.
This is a science book, and the bulk of it uses only a couple of layout formats, typically with 3 images and some text frames at fixed positions. Each page content is independent of each other (i.e. text does not flow to the next page)
I could design the layouts (or templates) for the left and right facing pages and even set them as master pages. However, any individual page could be on the left or right facing page and the image positions are slightly different due to the gutter. Even if I override each item properly, inserting a single page at the beginning shifts all the pages from left to right and vice versa, leading to mispositioned text and images. If I had a 2-page spread master page, it would end up with duplicate objects instead. I'm trying Master Pages now because I might foresee slight adjustments to the page layout midway through the project, and don't want to reposition/resize everything over again. Ideally it should be adjustable from a single location...?
Is there an elegant way to resolve this? I am familiar with Javascript but have not dealt with it in Indesign yet, so I'm very open to using it if necessary.
Thanks in advance for any input.

Thanks Ankit. I have actually gone through several Master Page tutorials and am already overriding objects from the various Master Pages I am using.
The problem is, if I have a 2-page spread for a Master Page, inserting a page before the spread (quite common during this project) that uses the Master Page will result in duplicate objects on each page. i.e. the page will contain BOTH my overridden objects from the left side plus the master page components on the right side. It becomes a complete mess.
If I had a 1-page Master Page for a particular layout, it would only be for the left facing page, and I would face the same problem when inserting pages again.
From what I see now, Master Pages are meant for completely static components on the page and not for fixed layouts.
