Fixed units / Fixed work - best practice?

Hi,
Have a Project that consists of mainly Fixed duration tasks, but it also includes some assembly tasks where we can use more staff if we need to finish the task earlier. Have tried to figure out wheter to use fixed units or fixed work for the assembly tasks,
but are so far unable to decide which one to use. Both of them work just fine, but which is the proper one to use, and which is the most commonly used type, fixed units or fixed work?
Say that we have an assembly task that requires 100 hours of work, and we have 2 Resources working on it and it takes 50 hours duration to complete it. Then we notice that it will require 130 hours of work so we add a third resource so we can complete
it on time. Does it really matter if we use fixed units or fixed work on these kind of tasks? We have Control of the plan with either one of them as Project asks if the duration or amount of units/work should be changed so there is really not a big deal, but
would still like to know which of them that is the most common one to use?
Kind regards //Anders

Let me further Trevors reply,
First point of Industrial Modelling is not to follow the pack, just because someone else does something doesn't make it correct. Understand the software and the situation you are modelling and select the best option. To do this it is critical
to understand the 5 options.
1.Fixed Units/Effort Driven On
As more resources are added: the duration will decrease, Work remains, All resources working full time
2.Fixed Units/Effort Driven Off
As more resources are added: the duration remain, Work increases, All resources working full time
3.Fixed Duration/Effort Driven On
As more resources are added: the duration remain, Work decreases, All resources working PART time
4.Fixed Duration/Effort Driven Off
As more resources are added: the duration remain, Work increases, All resources working full time
5.Fixed Work/Effort Driven On
As more resources are added: the duration remain, Work increases, All resources working full time
Now to answer your question, THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 1 AND 5 IS WHEN YOU CHANGE THE DURATION fixed work (1) will keep the amount of work constant and change how many hours the men/woman work each day to complete the task
as scheduled. Compareded to fixed units (5) when the amount of work will increase or decrease to match the duration.
If you not changing the duration it does not matter which one you use. Although, I recommend (5) as it will have the resources allocated at 100% (Probably most realistic) but you have a better understanding of the situation and can make a better call.

  • Creating Billing Unit in CRM V1.2007 Best Practices C05

    Hi,
in C05 (Org Model with HR Integration) for Best Practices V1.2007 I have to create a Billing Unit.
That means, I have to create a Corporate Account.
For Creation of the Corporate Account i need a Number Range and a Grouping.
    My Question:
Maintaining Number Range and Grouping for Business Partners is described in C03.
In the Solution Builder C03 comes after C05.
So I have first to finish C03 manually via SPRO or at least I have to maintain a Number Range and a Grouping so that I´m able to create the Billing Unit as an Corporate Account and then proceed with C05?

I have already created a new work bench and customize request ,but stills its gvg "Transport numbers not fullfill the requirement".
Iam not able to find a solution for this on service market place.

In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.

  • Displaying unit's text of a fixed unit keyfigure?

    Dear folks,
Does anyone knows how I can show text of unit of a key figure which is fixed unit? All I could do was only showing the key (3digits), but the requirement requires us to show the text of the unit too (or at least techical text which is 6 digits).
       Thanks you all in advance!
    Phaendin C.

    Dear Phaendin,
I guess that you are talking about the unit of measurement (UoM) which is shown together with key figure values.
As far as I know there is no way to change the format of that information. But there is a work around. You can add UoM as a characteristic to your query and include it in your workbook as an additional row or column. As for every characteristic you can change the display format.
I hope these hints help to solve your requirements.

    Stefan

  • IPhone Best Practices - A Work In Progress

Hello all. I've been tasked with introducing my coworkers into the inner workings of the iPhone, and there are a good number of pointers that I find myself saying over and over again. I'd like to share my best practices with everyone, as well as collect more pointers and opinions from the community at large.
    Care and Handling:
First - wash your hands, often. Now I know we all do this often anyway, but I'd like to point out that a healthy amount of hand washing will really go a long way to keep your iPhone screen smudge free. The worst offender, unfortunately, is doughnuts. A small layer of sugar will render that area un-tappable, without any real indication that it has done so. If you are frantically tapping the screen on the iPod button and nothing is happening, clean your phone before you do a hard reset.
Second - Pockets. Keeping your phone in your front pocket is natural and what most of us do. In these summer months, however, keeping your phone in a sweaty front pocket can do a good deal to the dirt level of the screen. If you find yourself cleaning your phone constantly, try a belt clip.
Lastly - Battery Life. Your iPhone's battery life is in your hands, literally. Being aware of your power consumption and planning accordingly is going to be infinitely more important that the battery's native charge-holding ability. This goes especially for the day of purchase - as tempting as it may be to open the box and activate, immediately running around the house watching YouTube, it is best to let the phone charge for 12 hours before use. Charging the phone every night is an absolute must, skipping a day will kill the battery life as your ride the bottom edge the following day. Most of us have access to a USB port while we're at work, best idea will be to plug in your phone when you sit down at your desk.
    iPod:
Large Libraries: In the opening weekend, I got many complaints that you cannot manually manage your music. There is a workaround that has made me change the way I work with all of my iPods: the iPhone specific playlist. Simply create a playlist with all of the music you wish to put on your phone and sync that one playlist. This also helps with sync time - you have a start sync and an end sync, not a constant sync all throughout your music management, slowing your computer down in the process.
TV Shows: I watch a lot of MST3K, which I have organized into iTunes as TV shows, split into seasons, the works. The problem that has arisen, therefore, is the one of selective synchronization - you cannot specifically select the TV show you want to sync to the device, instead getting the choices to sync all, unwatched, or latest shows. This is problematic when each show is 700MB large. Here's the work around - select all of the episodes of a specific show and right click, selecting "Mark as Not New", removing all of the little blue dots from the episodes. Select the one, three, or five episodes, and right click them, selecting "Mark as New", then sync the last one, three, or five unwatched episodes. The shows you selected will sync.
    iPhoto:
Many users are complaining that iPhoto opens whenever the phone is connected. This is not a preference of the phone, but rather iPhoto. Remember when you first launched iPhoto and it asked you if you wanted to use iPhoto whenever your camera was attached? iPhoto is detecting that your phone is a camera and launching, just as you told it to do.
    Mail:
POP accounts - too many unread messages: When first adding a POP account, all of the messages downloaded to the phone arrive as unread. Tapping a message, tapping back, and then tapping the next message can get tedious. Here's the workaround - tap the small down arrow to the upper right hand side of the screen, watching closely to the number next to Inbox. When that number goes down by one, tap the arrow again. If that number hasn't gone down yet, wait a sec, and do not try to tap tap tap tap tap, you'll flood the input queue and crash Mail.
Syncing Mail accounts - All too often people blame the iPhone when their mail does not work. A perfect test is sync you accounts from Mail. If they work in mail, they'll work on the phone, if they are unreliable in Mail, they will also be unreliable on the phone. The Mail client on the iPhone is just as powerful as any other mail client in terms of how it connects to mail servers, if you are having problems you need to check your settings before blaming the hardware. If you prefer to leave your install of Mail.app alone, create a new user account on your Mac, set up all of the accounts you want there, and use iTunes to sync that data to the phone. Make sure to remove that portion of sync from your actual user account's instance of iTunes, however, or it will all sync back.
This message has not been downloaded from the server: This message has snagged a couple users, but upon investigation, these users have filled their iPhones to the absolute brim with music and video. It hasn't been downloaded from the server because there is no space to download to - this also applies to the Camera application dumping to the Home screen. Because there is no space, it can't add any new data. Make some room, then be patient as the mail client gets to that message in cleanup (often a sync or reboot will clear it up).
    Safari:
Safari and iPod: Many users have reported iPod stopping in the middle of browsing, often pouting and pursing their lips crying, "This is terrible, I can't even browse the web and listen to music at the same time?". I then check their phone, and lo and behold they have upwards of eight separate pages open at the same time. This device (like every other computer out there) has a finite amount of memory, each page taking up a significant portion depending on how busy the page is. I've routinely gotten through entire albums while browsing through Safari, but I've got one page open in total, and it's usually mostly text. Keep it to one or two pages open and iPod will run forever if you let it.
Web Apps: "This web app is terrible, it keeps booting me to Home!" When was your last reboot? How many other pages are open? In the same vein as Safari and iPod, Web Apps need a good deal of breathing room - give it to them. Close down other pages, stop iPod, or even reboot. Give the app a clean slate and it will perform, every time. iPhoneRemote users will attest to this.
    iCal:
Multiple Calendars - Default Calendar: When adding a new appointment, it adds to the default calendar. Appointments can't be shunted to the correct calendar until after sync anyway, so create an "iPhone" calendar and make that the default. Because it's in that calendar, you'll know enough to move it to the appropriate calendar after sync.
Please feel free to add your own best practices, and ask questions, too.

is there any application you can get for the iphone to enlarge text and phone numbers ?
If included with an email or on a website, yes with no application needed.
If you are referring to the text size for your iPhone's contact list, no.
can you insert a phone number from your contact list into a text message ?
    No.
i cant seem to figure it out, does the alarm clock work if you turn off the phone at night,
No - powered off with the iPhone means powered off. Any phone that provides for this is not powered off - it is in deep sleep or deep standby mode, which the iPhone does not support. If you don't want your phone ringing or don't want to receive SMS at night but you want to use the iPhone's alarm feature as a wake-up alarm, you can turn on Airplane Mode before going to bed, which will also conserve the battery if your iPhone is not plugged in at night.
can you send a multi media text message ?
    No.

  • DEP error "itunes has stopped working" FIX! (might work 4 other/all errors)

I came across this problem and spent hours looking for a fix. From what I found on the internet, it seems as if Apple has no clue how to fix this problem, and tells u to contact Microsoft & Microsoft will tell you to contact Apple. I personally fix this problem myself on a laptop running Windows Vista 64 bit and on my own personal computer running Windows 7 32 bit. So more than likely this fix should work for just a bout any os. All and all, this fix is just a matter of uninstalling your iTunes and downgrading it to the next lowest version of iTunes. Example, if your running iTunes 9.x, uninstall that, and downgrade to iTunes 8.x. But anyways, I'm going to break it down as to exactly what I did.
    1. Uninstall your version of iTunes (mines was 9.x).
    2. Uninstall quick time, bonjour, apple application support, apple mobile device support & apple software update.
    3. Reboot (not necessary, but I did it).
    4. Download the next lowest version number of iTunes than what you had. If you had iTunes 9.x download iTunes 8.x. If u had iTunes 8.x download iTunes 7.x. That can be found here. http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.php (this fix was only test on computers running iTunes 9.x)
    5. Install the older version of iTunes you just downloaded. For the first time iTunes runs, it will not work because it will give you a message about the 4 files in your music folder being created from a newer version of iTunes.
    6. So to fix this problem, you will want to save those four files and "move" (not copy) them to your desktop. The files are iTunes Library Extras, iTunes Library Genius, iTunes Library & iTunes Music Library. Those files are responsible for any type of play list you created in iTunes and remembering your music library.
    7. Restart your iTunes and it will be working again. Of course with an older version starting from stratch.
    8. If you dont care about your previous play list and or organization of your iTunes and are just happy that it works again, then your good to go. Just delete the four files from step 6 and you don't need to pass this step. If you want your iTunes back to exactly how it was, then keep reading.
    9. After downgrading your iTunes, when you run it for the first time, it will ask you to upgrade. Upgrade your iTunes like how you normally would any other time.
    10. Close out iTunes if it remains open & replace the four files in the iTunes folder with the four files you moved to your desktop in step 6.
    11. Restart your iTunes, and you should now have a fully working version of iTunes with all of your original play list and library.
Like I said before, this is my own personal fix & if it works for you then pass it on to the next person.

    Fault Module Name:          ntdll.dll
    Fault Module Version:          6.0.6002.18327
If the QuickTime Player is launching, I'm less inclined to wonder about an ATI Tray Tools conflict issue. (Although we may have to return to that ... symptoms for that particular issue have changed slightly before, and might have changed again. I was away from the forum for a few months, which is an eternity in this particular advice-provision business.)
On occasion, the ntdll.dll-referencing error has been associated with some sort of Apple Application Support damage. (In those cases, Safari for Windows also fails to launch on the same PC, also citing ntdll.dll in the problem report.) But in those cases a complete uninstall/reinstall can fix this.
Doublechecking, Leah. When you did your uninstall/reinstall, were you using the following document as a guide? (The "Verify iTunes and related components are completely uninstalled" section is particularly important if we've got damaged Apple Application Support program-file issues afoot.)
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7

Whenever I go to iTunes with my iPod 5th generation 32 gb iPod Touch, running iOS 8.0.2, It tells me that the "Other" category is using up 14.59 gb of data. I have no clue why it says this and I have searched the internet for fixes and none worked. I have tried on a windows and a mac and noticed no change. I have tried restoring to a backup but that didn't help. I haven't had time to do a full restore but I will try if the problem persists.

An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB indicates corrupted files.

Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

  • Best Practice to Setup an application to work with both oracle and db2 db

    Hi,
We have an application that currently supports both oracle and db2 databases . It is currently using JPA with eclipselink as backend mechanism and we want to move to ADFBc as our backend . So what is best practice to do this?
I came across an old post in https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/adf-methodology/UlJZSTu14Io that states to create two different model projects to support oracle and db2 .
Is this still the standard ? Is there a way that we could work around rather than creating multiple projects?
How do i get the view controller to work with multiple model projects if this is the case?
    Thank you.

    Thanks for the response .
The problem is i would have the same schema on both the databases (both in oracle and db2) .
I don't see a scenario where i want both the application model projects at the same time . What i meant is , Application will either be deployed with Oracle DB or DB2 but not with both on a production environment .
So is there a way where i just change the connection parameters alone rather having two different models ?
If i have to use two model projects ,  would it be possible say i built the view controller for Oracle , and use it for DB2 if i make sure the BC objects names are similar between model projects and switch just the model jar based on the deployment environment ?

  • Seaching for Best Practice links that work

    Hi,
past few years I have been able to access SAP Best Practices documents like SAP Best Practices SAP Best Practices for CP and Wholesale Industries
(this one still works and guides me to the building block and process overview documents!).
Recently any link I can find to SAP Industry or Baseline Best Practices ends up with a dead link. See for example trying to get from here SAP Best Practices Baseline packages – SAP Help Portal Page
to Localized for Netherlands V1.607 SAP Best Practices package further below on that page, results in screen shot attached. I have seen that in many more examples (different countries, or in Industry Best Practice Packages instead of Country Baseline packages....)
Does any know whether and how SAP redesigned their access to Best Practices documents (Configuration Guides, eCatts, Scenario Process Overviews etc.?
    Thanks for your reply.
    Thijs

    Hi, Thijs,
There is currently a problem with Best Practices on the Help Portal.  On the home page of the portal (http://help.sap.com/) there is a message that reads "Stay Tuned - There are temporary problems when accessing some content types, for example PDF documents or Best Practices. We are working on a solution."
Our Wholesale Distribution industry group does not manage the Help Portal pages, so, unfortunately, I don't know the status of the problem or when it might be resolved.

  • Best Practice For Working on Composite In Team

    Hello,
I would like to know what is the best practice for working on a single composite by mutiple members in a team.
We have a core services module wherein a single composite contains many services. So, to complete in time, we would like many members to work on it simultaneously.
In such scenarios, if some one adds a new adapter or some other services, composite.xml changes.
Saving it would override other member's changes. Also, it is not possible to apply lock simultaneously on the same file through some version control mechanism.
Please let us know what should be the best practice in such scenarios.
    Thanks-
    Ashish

You can very well use a version control software with JDev. You may refer -
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/soa/jimerson-config-soa-355383.html
I think without version control mechanism (like subversion) it won't be easy to work in a multi-developer environment. If you really don't have a source and version control mechanism then manual merging will be required which may be error prone and time & effort consuming.

  • Best practice for exporting a dps folio so a third party can work on it?

    Hi All,
Keen for some thoughts on the best practice for exporting a dps folio, indd files, links and all, so a third party can carry on the work. Is their a better alternative to packaging each individual indd file and sharing the folio through adobe?
I know there have been similar questions here in the past, but the last (that i've found) was updated mid 2011 and I was wondering if their have been any improvements to this seemingly backwards workflow since then.
    Thanks in advance!

Nothing better than packaging them and using Dropbox to share. I caution you
on one thing as far as packaging:

  • Best Practice - Changing description for Org Unit/Position or creating new?

    Hello Freinds,
I just want to know from your experience what's normally practiced in your implementations for OM :-
For scenarios where there is a need to change the description of a particular org unit or position, do u
    1. just change the description effective a particular date (to maintain history) or
    2. put an end date to those objects and create new ones ?
Solution 1 is quick and easy, but in IT0001 the description displayed is as on start date of that infotype which is normally a date prior to the change in desc of those objects. As a result this infotype keeps displaying old description.
Is there any way to change this display to show the current description instead of the description as on start date of this infotype ???
Solution 2 calls for a lot of related activities, say if i create a new org unit and delemit the old one - then i have to move all the sub org units and positions into this new one ... which is quite time consuming and doesn't really seem practical.
How do u manage such scenarios ?
    Thanks
    Allen

We use option #1, although I am not sure this is best practice.  Using option 1 for positions makes it challenging when it comes to reporting on length of time in position.  We frequently have the scenario where a person is reorged not because they applied for another position, but just because the big wigs want to move around the chess pieces.  In these cases we simply modify the position attributes and then run a PA action.  Then if you run a query and use the standard delivered Length of time in position field, it appears as if the person has been in the same position for years (which they have), but their position has been retitled, re-graded, and re-orged numerous times.  This makes it very difficult to get to an employee's length of time in their role.
This is a great discussion question I hope more people respond with what they do and why.
