[FIXED] XFCE desktop black after libtoolslay update?

My XFCE desktop is just flat black when it was previously showing the stock arch background image.  I also can't right click on the desktop area to bring up the XFCE menu that appears by default.  Everything else runs just fine.
I'm about to go file a bug report but I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't any other information I need to put in as while I'm proficient with Arch, I'm coding illiterate.
EDIT: Due to a total mindfart, I posted this in the wrong forum... I'm terribly sorry, but could one of you mods move this to the DeskEnvironment forum?

xfdesktop is not starting. Try starting it manually, and if that works then try deleting the stuff for Xfce4 in ~/.cache which is the sessions and xfce4 folders. I had a similar problem except with Xfwm4 not starting.
If xfdesktop spits out errors when attempting to start it that prevent it from loading then post them here.

  • Grey Desktop Background after Security Update

Updated with the latest OS software update, when prompted.
Immediately afterwards, desktop background was grey and without any images
Everything else appears fine.  Just miss the image on my desktop

    Hi jgpeebles,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand the concern of your desktop image going completely gray after an update. It sounds as though you may need to reassign your desktop picture. Please use the attached article for information on how to complete this process.
    Mac Basics: Desktop
    Change your background
You can change the picture that's displayed on your Mac's desktop. You can choose one of the desktop pictures that comes with your Mac, a solid color, or one of your own pictures.
Click the Launchpad icon in the Dock, and then click System Preferences. If you're using Mac OS X v10.6 or later, click the System Preferences icon in the Dock.
Click Desktop & Screen Saver, and then click Desktop.
To select the kind of desktop picture you want to use, do one of the following:
To use an image that come with your Mac, select a folder under the Apple section.
To use a solid color, select "Solid Colors" under the Apple section.
To use your own picture, select the Picture folder under "Folders," if the picture you want is stored in your Pictures folder. If your image is in another folder, click the Add button (+), then find and select the folder that your picture is in. Then, click Choose.
Select the picture you want in the box on the right.
    Have a great day,
    Joe

  • I have followed all suggestions. Still can't fix the problem. After an update, my profile seems to be blocked.

My Toshiba laptop went through 45 updates, and now when I open Firefox (where ALL my bookmarks live) the program freezes after a few minutes. I get error messages about my profile, and errors about Firefox already running. I tried the suggestions above, but they don't seems to line up with my system. Windows8 is my OS. This query is on another laptop.

hello rgneb, can you see if those problems continue after you update to firefox 37 beta 6?: https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/beta

  • White thick frame around desktop icons (after latest updates)

    hi all,
i'm using xfce4 as DE, but, instead of xfdesktop as desktop icon manager, i keep using nautilus ('nautilus -n': run automatically at session login)  'cos i like some features xfdesktop doesn't have, such as: more flexible icons repositioning, icons resizing, etc..
my main problem is: after having installed last updates this morning (pacman -Syyu), and after re-executing nautilus, now all icons on desktop have a ugly and annoying thick (3-4 pxs) white frame around ...
googling about, i found out it could be a issue related to how nautilus manages thumbnails ....but unfortunately all threads are concerning gnome 2.x...NOT gnome 3.x
some of you encountered such a problem?
seems that nautilus treats and displays all desktop icons as images thumbnails
    thanks

    guys
    i've solved this way:
    from: http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/os/Linux/distr/ … g/os/i686/
    i downloaded: nautilus-3.6.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz
    so i downgraded nautilus (pacman -U nautilus-3.6.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz) from 3.6.3 prior to 3.6.1-1 (unfortunately i couldn't find 3.6.1-2 or 3.6.2 vers around)
restarted nautilus and everything is back to normal
ps: remember to add nautilus in IgnorePkg section (/etc/pacman.conf), otherwise it will be upgraded back again as soon as a pacman -Su is issued
i share with you this piece of information if it can be useful

  • "sliding" desktop screen after software update

Two days ago I installed the latest Apple software update for my iMac G5 running 10.4.11. This update fixed security issues, however, ever since the reboot, my entire desktop screen moves slightly whenever I move my mouse. The desktop screen is slightly larger than the display size and I cannot seem to reduce the size of the desktop screen to fit my display OR make any other adjustments to reduce the size of the desktop and/or stop the screen from scrolling around.
I was thinking of uninstalling the software update, but I don't know how to do that, either. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you to both responses. Sadly, I needed to resolve this matter quickly so I paid the apple support fee of $50 to learn what you both gave me as the correct solution. Hopefully next time I'll have more time to wait for excellent answers : )

  • IdeaPad S500 Touch - Screen goes black after driver update

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad S500 Touch. It is running the most recent update of Windows 8.1. It suggested an update to the Lenovo Video Driver. After downloading and installing the update, the screen went black. When rebooting, the Lenovo logo appears on the screen, and it goes black again. No matter what I try, that's it.
    Anyone have a suggestion?
    Thanks,
    James

    hi Scoutmaster316,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
You will need to boot the system into safe mode.
the only option to boot there based on your situation is to crash boot the system
When you turn on the system, Lenovo Logo Appears then Black screen wait maybe a minute the hold the power button down to crash it you may need to reapeat this 4 to 5 times until it boots to a page like this
Once you got that proceed with these selection
Troubleshoot / Advanced Option / Startup Settings
Then you should rerach options with Safemode Select that.
If the driver is the problem you should be able to boot here,
Open device Manager and rollback the Video Driver

  • Desktop pausing after Software Update

I did the routine Software Updates (Security, Java and Quicktime) on 2 different G5s in my office and ever since both G5s now have intermitten pauses (every 90 seconds) in which everything on the desktop disappears for a second, finder jumps, all open folders close, any files being transferred stop and the cursor is disengaged. Any function in any application that happens to be in use when the "pause" occurs causes everything to stop and the last cursor function attempted has to be re-initiated. That happens every 90 seconds...try and get anything accomplished in 90 seconds. Ran the disk utility and now get an Error "1 HFS volume needs repair" (whatever that means). Can not figure out what is going on.

Check for incompatible third party applications.

  • I have a iq 804 and tried to upgrade to win 8, but the screen goes black after windows update.

i have been working with microsoft support for 5 hours everyday for the last 5 days. they could not help, now they ask to wait for hp to come out with new drivers to support win 8.any idea if they are going to add those since my computer is 3 years old

Here are the specs for your HP TouchSmart IQ804 Desktop Computer. According to the specs, this model shipped with Windows Vista 64-bit and was introduced for sale on or about 27-Aug-2008... making it almost 5 years old. Due to its age, HP has no intention of providing specific support or drivers for this model. Please read HP's position below.
    THIS is HP's position on Windows 8 support and any HP computer not originally supplied with Windows 8;
    1) Not all Windows 8 features may be available on all PCs.
    2) Your particular experience with Windows 8 will be determined by the capabilities of your PC.
    3) HP is providing upgrade instructions and drivers will be available for most Windows 7 systems sold after 1st October 2011.
    4) If you want to restore the original operating system after upgrading, you must create HP recovery media before you upgrade.
    5) Please note that if you purchased your system prior to October 1, 2011, HP has not tested these PCs or developed Windows 8 upgrade instructions or drivers for them. Upgrading such systems may be difficult or impossible.
    and
    Important information regarding additional limitations and requirements;
    1) Screen Resolution Requirements
    2) Limitations with DVD playback software
    3) Limitations with Blu-ray playback software
    4) Limitations with TV Tuner software
    5) Secure Boot & other UEFI dependent features
    6) Limitations with touch screen capabilities
"Windows 7 (also includes Windows Vista) PCs with touch screens will not have full Windows 8 touch capabilities after upgrade. HP PCs with touch input hardware designed for Windows 7 will provide a comparable experience for only two touch point applications after the upgrade to Windows 8. HP Windows PCs with touch input hardware will not support Windows 8 applications that require more than two simultaneous touch points. Additionally, Windows 8 edge swipes may not be available due to the recessed bezel on HP touch systems shipped with Windows 7."
    7) HP TouchSmart Magic Canvas and HP TouchSmart applications are not compatible with Windows 8 and must be uninstalled before upgrading. Note that content created using the TouchSmart applications such as Graphitti will not be available after upgrading.
With all of that said, you may be able to install Windows 8 and it may work but many of its features may no longer function under Windows 8.

  • HP P7-1154 desktop dead after Bios Update.

I have had this HP machine for about two years now, bought it new on November 2011. Last night I decided to find out if any of my drivers were outdated so, I went to HP website to download all the newest updates. After finishing the installation for all my drivers I realized that there was also a new BIOS update, so I proceeded to download and install it. after the installtion finished and I rebooted everything seemed fine for about 1 hour, however the system froze and then thats when my End begins. The machine will not POST, everything turns on, all parts have been removed and tested, but machine turns on and does nothing. And my conclusion is that sadddley enough my motherboard/BIOS is bricked. Is there any solution to my misfortune, I need this machine for work. Please respond to my post, I will apreciate any opionis or suggestions please and thank you. BIOS was updated to Version7.16 Rev. A, 2.6M.

    Ricky, welcome to the forum.
I am not certain that there is anything that you can do.  However, here is the "Motherboard Specifications" page for the computer.  Near the bottom of the page there is a guide on clearing the CMOS.  I would give this a try to see if it helps.

  • HT203547 Thunderbolt Display Screen Still Black After Firmware Update

Mid 2014 15" MacBook Pro (retina), and Thunderbolt Display, under 1 year old.
The Display stopped waking from sleep, but it seems to only be the backlight.  When using a flashlight, I can see the image on the screen.  My computer recognizes the Display is connected.
The firmware update hasn't resolved the issue.  The article HT203547 is worthless.
Many, many other similar issues are reported in the apple community forum and in the Apple Online Store reviews for the TB Display.
I've had the Display repaired, having all of the internal components replaced.  Now, it's at an Apple Authorized Service Provider, again... for the same issue.
Last time, it was in the shop for several weeks, as the technicians had trouble resolving the issue.
Apple will continue to have it serviced and replace it, entirely, if needed.  But, that will have to be after their technicians repair the same parts 4 times.  I've barely gotten any use out of it over the past 2 months.
But, if there are inherent flaws... what can be done?  Is there any way to get a refund/credit, after 6 months or so?

    Hello JethrofromBama,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I understand that your iPhone's screen has no backlight, and is dark.  I'd like you to please follow the steps below in attempt to resolve this issue.
Display has no backlight or dark screen
Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
If the low-battery screen appears, charge the iPhone.
My issue is still not resolved. What do I do next?
    Contact Apple Support.

    Hi Rudy,
I'm assuming you want to fix your issue, so rather complain about this, why don’t you tell us more details about your issue and let us help you? If you cannot logon your system properly, you could perform a system repair by using DVD media as a repair disk.
If you are using windows 8 you could get more help in Windows 8 forum.

To use the system repair disc
Insert the system repair disc into your CD or DVD drive.
Restart your computer using the computer's power button.
If prompted, press any key to start the computer from the system repair disc.
If your computer isn't configured to start from a CD or DVD, check the information that came with your computer. You might need to  change your computer's BIOS settings.
Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
Select a recovery option, and then click Next.

  • Blue desktop screen, no screensavers or desktop pix after 10.5.8 update

Immediately after updating to 10.5.8 - using the Combo updater and yes, fixing permissions before and after the update - I was brought to my familiar desktop with the standard issue blue background. I tried accessing the Desktop/Screensaver preference pane via both System Preferences and right-clicking the desktop, but selected desktop pics won't load, and screensavers fail with an error message saying:
    Can't load screen saver.
Screen saver “Cosmos” did not load properly. Please select another screen saver.
    Error: Can’t load bundle
And yes, I tried all the screensavers...
    What gives?

There's no such thing as garbage on the screen. Try to be a little bit more specific. Are you stuck at blue screen?apple and spinning gear?does it load the desktop? You can't expect an accurate answer if your explanation is VAGUE. anyway, follow the steps below as it may fix your "issue" I am not even sure what it is.
    1. Boot into safe mode (pressing shift while turning on the machine)wait until you see the Apple with spinning gear. Then let go.
    2. Once you have safe boot. Login normally. Download the 10.5.8 combo update
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
    3. Apply the update once more.
    If this fails,
    1. Boot to the install disc. Select the language
    2. Ignore the welcome screen. Choose utilities on the top
    3. Repair disc and permission DO BOTH
