Fixing a cough in STP V 1.0.3

so I recorded a live event and sure enough while the singer was performing, someone had to cough and it was picked up loud and clear in by the mics.
STP clicks and pops didn't work.
tried sampling noise and reduce noise didn't work - it would either take everything out, or nothing. I couldn't isolate the cough you know?
now the editor tool.... the pencil.... I have googled it, I have watched videos but I must be missing something....
in the "waveform" everyone says you can re-draw the wave to smooth it out but when I click in the waveform with the pencil, I just get the "you can't do that" sound.
In the "Frequency Spectrum View" I don't get the "you can't do that" sound but it also doesn't do anything. I cant click and drag, make a line, circle the offending sound, nothing.
what am I missing?

if the spectrum view doesn't work then there's something else wrong. It might be time to trash STP preferences.
The pencil tool in waveform view isn't what you want. A cough has much too broad a spectrum for that approach. The spectrum view would be the correct approach. However, personally, I find the Apple implementation of this highly lacking. I found it much better in Adobe's Soundbooth. Sounds like beeps, and coughs take just seconds to remove. In STP it was just too difficult to isolate and draw around the offending sound.

  • How to Analyze and Fix?

I'm trying to do an Analysis of Power Line Hum and then fix.
I open STP, a multi track setup appears, I drag my file onto one of the tracks (though it's stereo it only appears on one track--odd), when I click on it it appears in the Film Editor window. I select the whole length of the file there, in the Analysis tab I check Power Line Hum and Analyze, it does, but everything at the bottom stays grayed out.
How does one fix things using the Analysis tab?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the tips, though I looked for Send and I don't see it.
And if I do figure out how to do it--is 2x clicking get you the same thing--I believe I was in an audio project when I first tried to analyze and fix and all fix options were grayed out then so how will going there now change anything?
Sorry, don't have the manual, but an audio file project is just where you have a big window on top and the Film Editor, etc tabs are blank, right?
STP is a very difficult app that doesn't seem to follow a logic I can comprehend.

  • Save sound fixes not saved in FCP

I'm fixing some audio by sending my audio portion in the FCP time to soundtrack pro, after I fixed my pops and noises, I saved the audio and go back to FCP, for some reason FCP doesn't see the fixed sound, it still has the original corrupt sound. Has anyone had this problem. I thought once you send and fix from FCP using STP, once you save the film, quit STP, FCP will immediately see the improved audio.
any guidance will be very helpful.
    thanks

are you sending as a multitrack project or a single clip? If multitrack you have to export the mix and re-import in FCP. If single clip it's all in how you tell STP to modify the file. Read the section in the manual about saving of the single files for an explanation.

  • Keyboard Keypad not working

iMac G5 rev.A OS 10.4.11, Original Apple Pro Keyboard
I never noticed that the numerical keypad on the RH side of my keyboard was inoperative, in that I cannot use the keys to type the digits in any text, nor for entering numbers in an Excel spreadsheet cell.
I never use it except to use the 12346789 keys to nudge the pointer. I always use, by habit I guess, the number keys above the letter keys.
I checked the Finder’s Help and did not find any specific info about the numerical keypad. I thought that may be the Extended Keyboard that came with the computer, somehow had not been identified properly when I installed OS 10.4. Reading Finder’s help about that subject, it said to “Open Preferences, Click Keyboard and Mouse, Click Keyboard, Click the “Change Keyboard Type” button, and Follow the steps when the Keyboard Setup Assistant appears.”
I have one problem: my Keyboard and Mouse Preference does not have a Change Keyboard Type button.
Any suggestions as to how I can get the numerical keypad to work?
    jb

    Hi,
This morning my numeric keypad quit working and
I lost an hour trying to fix it
    (COUGH theft of my time).
This article didn't come up in a Google search
because this article doesn't use correct terminology.
So, for Google's benefit, I'll add a few search terms here:
    numeric keypad stopped working
    numeric keypad doesn't work
    numeric keypad won't work
    numeric keypad quit working
    Mac OS X 10.3
    G3 G4 G5
    _Recommended Solutions_:
    1. Press the Option key 5 times to turn Mouse Keys off.
    2. Better yet, disable the feature so it can't get turned on again
every time a book leans against the keyboard.
    Go into System Preferences,
    click Universal Access,
click the Mouse tab (even though this is a keyboard problem),
and uncheck the checkbox labeled "Press the option key five times to turn Mouse Keys on or off".
    Gotchas suck!

  • Pop will not remove

I have recorded a sermon at my local church, for broadcast onto radio. The pastor has a lapel mic, and I have run the clicks/pop filter and fixed the errors that STP finds. However, there are still some pops, that I cannot remove. A few of these I could remove by simply deleting a bit of the waveform, but others are integrated into a bit of voice i.e. the 'Ca' sound at the beginning of the word can.
Any help in which filters to use, to remove these pops, and preserve the voice.
We have been given some free radio airtime, if we can submit a decent sample CD. Any help with removing these pops, would be most appreciated.

Simon, with the toughies like old records, or mic pops that seem as though nothing can remove them there's a few tricks.
First get the particular pop isolated by zooming in all the way and find the exact ins and out points within it [or if it's larger than your screen try selecting points within the pop]. Then cut the section in half and highlight back from the first half/beyond the second half.
Do this in repeated steps: first the piece before and within the first half; then the second half and beyond [or potentially just pieces of the entire pop].
If necessary go down to quarters of the original section and work it out until the process actually moves the original pop at least somewhat, then you're good to try and remove the whole pop again.
If all else fails you can probably find the exact point of the pop after the above steps and manually draw it out with the pencil and/or delete a few milleseconds as you said you've done.
    Good Luck

  • Even after being "fixed", my connection is still u...

Been with BT since late December, using infinity 2 with HH5. Live in a block of flats.
When we first got the package we were being disconnected every few hours, often several times per hour. Finally got some help from a mod on here who ran some tests and found a possible error on the copper line. BT sent out an engineer who fiddled with the cables in the ground outside, and things seemed more stable. Another engineer came out to reset the profile, and he also discovered line problems (something inside the flat's junction box or some such, in the main corridor cupboard for the block of flats). We didn't get any speed increase as hoped (in fact, we're now getting 3mb LESS upload), but the connection at least seemed more stable.
Fast forward to March, and now some of the old troubles have returned. We're not disconnected as much, but there are plenty of spells where we'll randomly get huge packet loss, which makes internet usage nearly impossible (webpages wont load or take ages to load, ping times in online gaming nose dive, NowTV app on the Xbox will keep dropping out, etc). Sometimes these spells last 5 minutes and then all is normal, while other times they'll keep returning in 5-10 minute batches until we give up and reset the HH5 (which often causes it to settle back to normal, though not always).
For what it's worth, I've not spotted any common denominator during these spells. No incoming calls, no random devices running which might interfere, no changes in browsing habits). I already disabled/fixed/changed the usual things people tell you to (the auto wireless thing in the HH settings, wireless channels, etc).
Here are some examples from PingPlotter which give you some idea of what's going on:
    1. A 10 minute spell of packet loss. You can see the normal stable connection to the left and right of it.
     2. Another 5 minute spell of packet loss (with a couple of red bars in showing no connection at all), and then the big red block is after we reset the HH. Note the perfectly stable connection right after.
     3. One of the crazy 30 minute batches of packet loss. This one happened overnight (often we'll try to use the Internet channels via the YouView box in the morning and it'll say no connection, despite the connection being fine (at the time), and we'll have to cycle the HH yet again).
     4. A wider snapshot over the course of 2 hours. Internet connection will vary wildly between working as normal and then 5 seconds later being unable to load a page, then back to normal, and so on.
     5. Even wider snapshot over the course of 24 hours or so. Lord knows what was going on.
    6. Snapshot taken just now. After a couple of spells of 5-10 minutes mass packet loss I spotted another one coming (15:24) and did a HH cycle (big red bar). Upon reconnection the graph shows things being pretty unstable, until finally the HH disconnected again (big red bar at 15:42) by itself. Currently it's still unstable as above. I expect another disconnection wil be forthcoming.
I'm loathe to manually reset the HH as I know that's not healthy, but if I don't do it we'll just get these spells of massive packet loss over and over again until it just disconnects itself (and it'll happen at inoppertune moments, such as during an online game, or while we're doing online banking, or while we're watching a footie match on BT Sport). I'd rather control when it disconnects myself and pick the right moment. A common war cry in our household has become "I'm resetting the hub, stop what you're doing!"
Now, I'm not some perfectionist that demands a 100% stable line 100% of the time, but frankly, while with *cough* Sky *cough*, we went for years with barely a disconnection in sight. I almost never had to manually reboot it. You'd think the supposedly superior Infinity would be at least comparable, but it's been nothing but trouble. This situation is especially annoying as Youview needs the connection for the TV channels, and we're either losing them entirely or they're breaking up at random intervals.
At some point I may have to fork out for one of those Openreach modems to see if that helps, but it shouldn't be up to the customer to fix a problem, that shouldn't really exist in the first place, by paying out of their own pocket.
Does *anyone* have any advice, here? We're locked into a million year control now so leaving isn't an option, and you'd think if there was an obvious, major problem with the line they'd have spotted it and fixed it last time. Users? Mods? Buddah? Anyone?

I've contacted the mods about the problem (again). Hopefully someone will check this thread.
For reference, here's a PingPlotter graph which shows me going from wireless (18:46) to wired (18:48) and back to wireless (18:56) during one of the evening's usual bouts of nonsense.
So yes, most of the chaos is with the wireless rather than the wired. Problem is, the full hub disconnections affect everything (wireless AND wired devices). Before someone says "well change your wireless channel!" or "investigate interference!" -- two points: 1) wireless devices are absolutely perfect for 90% of the day, and 2) there are random disconnections of the hub (orange light) interspersed with the wireless problems, and sometimes completely divorced from the wireless problems.

  • My macbook 2008 screen went black a few months ago. I've been using it with a monitor. Today it's working. I have a feeling it's going to die at any time. Is it possible that a software patch fixed this ? Is there a utility I can run to test the screen ?

    Model : Macbook 2008
Symptoms: The screen was, intermittently, going black last year and then went black completely. I have been using it on a monitor ever since.
I can see the screen with a flashlight.
I completely erased the drive and loaded OSx 10.7. I believe that's the last version of OSx Mac will be supporting on this computer.
When I booted up the computer this morning the screen came on !
While typing this question, my screen went black again, not to return.
    So sad.
I did bring it to Apple and they believed the entire screen needed to be replaced.
They say that they tried a new inverter and it didn't work.
I have a feeling I'm just out of luck unless I want to cough up the $300 to fix the screen.
Although it is a solid machine, 2Ghz processor with 4 gigs of ram, it is still six years old.
I imagine that's like putting a new transmission in a 95 Honda civic. Yeah, it's a reliable car but it's old and it's probably going to break again.
I love my mac so much but I can't justify buying a new one or  paying to fix this old one.
I have a Gateway dual booting Windows 7 and ubuntu linux that's actually pretty slick and has taken it's place on business trips and coffee shop excursions.
If anyone has any thoughts or feedback I'd appreciate it.

The current Apple hardware warranty provides the following coverage for replacement parts:
A replacementpart or product, including a user-installable part that has been installed in accordance withinstructions provided by Apple, assumes the remaining warranty of the Apple Product orninety (90) days from the date of replacement or repair, whichever provides longer coveragefor you.
Check your particular warranty and see where you stand as to the period of coverage.

  • Missing "(sent)" files roundtripping b/n FCP and STP

Sorry, but I'm posting this here because the STP forum is quite slow to reply. And, I'm not sure if this is an FCP or STP issue.
I have just finished my first project using STP. I was doing a lot of round tripping b/n FCP5 and STP (about 15 clips) and everything was working splendidly. Airconditioner noise easily zapped! A beautiful thing. Annoying pops and cracks removed with just a few clicks of the mouse. More beautiful things. Then...I finished the project (thank gawd), output via Compressor and into DVDSP. The final DVDs are produced and the client loves them. But, I had both a 30i and 24Pa version of the project. I had originally edited the 30i version and then duplicated this project and removed all the Advanced Pulldown to produce the 24P version (without having to re-edit; another beautiful thing). Note, I DID NOT do the STP round-tripping until the 24P version of the project. After everything was complete, I deleted the 30i project (it was never needed) leaving just the 24P version on the internal disks.
Suddenly, when I next opened the 24P version of the project ALL OF THE STP-FIXED AUDIO WAS GONE! NOW OFFLINE!!!
Where the heck did they go? And, where were they originally? When you round-trip like this, what kind of file is STP (or FCP) creating? In the Browser, I noticed FCP creates a new audio file clip icon and appends "(sent)" to the original audio clip name (e.g. an audio clip with the name "21DConfRoom03" has a duplicate? audio clip created, presumably by STP, with the new filename "21DConfRoom03 (sent)")
Where are these so-called "(sent)" audio clips source stored on disk? Where in the standard FCP file structure are they? Is it possible FCP was putting them into the 30i version of the project file structure by mistake? (remember, i first edited in the 30i project version before duplicating and creating a 24P version).
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -Michael

When you say ProTools outputting individual aiff, is it a mix down file?
Yes. I have certain audio configurations that we need to output for the networks. Ch1 & 2 are a stereo mix, then CH3&4 might be Mix minus Music, then Ch5 Mono Dialog, Ch6 Mono Prod Audio. Ch7&8 SFX....9 and 10 Stereo music.
So the mixer mixes down what we need for the various tracks.
Also, as I change my film, is there any way to update the found files in ProTools?
Don't change your cut. You should not be sending the audio to the mix if you aren't done cutting. You wait until you have picture lock, then send the audio. If there is a change, then you re-export the OMF, they reconform, and send new tracks. HOW does the audio guy conform? Got me...I just know that they can.

  • Changes in STP not taking affect in FCP

Hi guys... Thanks for the help in advance.
Im trying to change the pitch of my voice over in STP but the changes doesnt apply in FCP not even if i save in to hard drive. Doesnt mater what format i save it to. or what ever changes i do to the audio clip, when i save it and play the saved clip there are no changes what so ever.

Yep, that's how it's working for now, until the next update fixes that.

  • Copy and Paste Crashes STP 1.0.1

While in Audio File mode, COPYING a selection of a sound file crashes STP.
SET NOISE PRINT (selecting a section of an Audio File and doing a PROCESS / SET NOISE PRINT) Crashes STP.
I really can't say if there was an upgrade or action I took that caused this to start happening.
I see that there are others with the same problem.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks for looking into this. I use NOISE PRINT all the time to process Audio for Video. (Removing Air Conditioner noise, DC Hum etc...) I find (found) it an invaluable tool.

  • ....STP not saving changes....

...a few people have experienced this problem and as of yet i've not seen an answer. I imported some music from an old cassette into STP did some EQ changes to bring out lost clarity then saved the mix, but when i replayed the new mix none of the changes were saved! anyone have answer for this one? thanks

That indicates that your primary account is the culprit. First close iWeb, delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple. iWeb.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, launch iWeb and try again.
If that doesn't help it could be another preference file that's interfering with iWeb. Here's how to determine if that's the case:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences
Go to HD/Users/Your_name/Library. Move the Preferences folder (in its entirety) to the Desktop and make a second copy of it so you have Copy A and B. Now try the the process again and determine if problem is fixed.
If the problem IS fixed, then go to the new Prefs folder that the OS will have created and open it up.
Open Copy B on the Desktop and select all of the items inside. Drag them into the open new library folder. When the Copy window comes up check the Apply to All check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here. That will keep the new files created and bring back all of the others.
If the problem is NOT fixed, trash the new Prefs folder and move the intact Copy A folder back to the Library folder .

  • Why is STP 2.0.2 Edited by Moderator

    Not happy...
Playhead stops randomly but music continues, have to quit to fix.
Can't change default layout or STP throws up error messages.
Random messages about missing files, please reconnect, when NO files are missing, and NO indication of why the error.
    Effects cause noticeable audio artifacts.
    Random, clicks, pop and buzzes.
Export to 16 bit AIF yields a file that must be opened and reexported via QT Pro in order to use (specifically in After Effects).
And I'm sure more and more...
    ST 1 was great!
STP w/ FCHD was awesome! Scored an independent feature, perfect!!

  • Saving wave files in STP editor

I have this problem which is very annoying. I have sampled some sounds from my hardware synth, logic playing the synth from every key and recording it. Then I edit the big soundfile in Soundtrack Pro's audio editor and save every single sample as separate .wav-file. I select every sample in the big file with mouse and open as a new audio file, then cut it, fade in and out and save.
The problem is that when I save this new audio file from the STP editor, no matter what save function I use, I always have to choose the quality when saving. By default, STP wants to save the file as a some kind of audio project file (.stap) and I have to change that to "wave" and then select the bitrate from 32 to 24. And I have to do this _every time_ I save a new sample which is recorded from a different key!
Am I doing something wrong or why doesn't STP remember my settings when I save? This behaviour makes my working very slow. When saving, I would like to only type the name of the file and press save because I use the same quality settings every time.
In fact STP remembers the quality settings if you open a wave file, do some editing and then save it but if you copy a section of the file to a new file and try to save it, STP defaults to a stap-file.
And another thing... Every time I save something from the editor, STP asks whether I want to flatten the project (all the edits) or not and I always press "yes". I hope there was a check box that I could choose that STP remembers my decision because of course I want to apply all the edits I made.
I have not noticed this kind of behaviour with any other sample editor, like soundforge, wavelab etc.
I use STP version 1.0.3. Does the UB 1.1 version fix these or is there any solution?

  • How to fix camcorder audio in Soundtrack Pro

    Hi all,
I just finished editing my short film in Final Cut Pro. The footage was awesome, however, the audio was horrible. I shot this footage using Panasonic PV-GS320, a pretty descent 3CCD camera. Unfortunately, it doesn't have any external mic output, which makes it flaw.
My question is: is it possible to "fix" this problem using Soundtrack Pro? To fix meaning to change it from a typical, cheap camcorder audio to a professional boom microphone (louder, clearer, and better).
The sound from this camera isn't that bad, actually (because although it doesn't come with any external microphone output, it does have "zoom microphone" -- whatever that means), BUT if you were a sound artist/ filmmaker/ college film instructor, you would know that my project wasn't done using an external microphone -- thus you would think that it's just a typical short movie that will end up on Youtube -- and you wouldn't give me a good grade for it.
SO is it possible to make some changes in Soundtrack Pro? I would really, really appreciate it if you guys could help me with this problem.
    Thanks very much!

    Hi Joe,
It is possible - within reason - to undertake some cleaning up of audio within STP. I am in the middle of doing this myself.
Take a look at this great article that explains the round trip between FCP and STP plus the various tools on offer and what they can do: http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/soundtrack_pro_newspencer.html

  • Media Offline when Exporting back to FCP from STP. Lesson 10 in APTS book.

Hello, I am going through the Apple Pro Training Series Book by Martin Sitter found a road block in Lesson 10. The topic is conforming at that seems to work decently (except for garbled text in the right side of the Conform tab). My issue is when trying to export back to FCP. I choose to Send Files to FCP sequence. A new sequence is created in the selected project as expected. The audio is fine, but instead of using the video from the correct sequence, it seems to be trying to use clips from the older sequence. Additionally, all the video clips show up as Media Offline. I can reconnect media, but the problem is that it is the wrong video sequence. Oddly, in STP the video looks perfect. Is there an error in the metadata? can this be fixed or prevented? Thank you

    Barreltone,
I am exporting back into Final Cut Pro via Send to Sequence. I have been exporting from the browser of FCP (sequence), and not the timeline (clips). I'm going to try that tactic, and see if that works.
