Fixing audio sync in iMovie

I imported a bunch of VHS tapes using a Digital8 camcorder to do the A-D conversion and Firewire to import the resulting DV stream into iMovie. The resulting video has an audio sync issue. The video is behind by a second or so. The delay seems consistent.
How can I use iMovie to fix the sync?

That is good to know, but I would like to fix the sync on the stuff that I have streamed in.
I would like to separate to audio from the video, offset the audio and glue them back together. How do I do that?
I tried using QuickTime to create separate streams, but iMovie would not let me import the audio.

  • Fixing audio sync without re-compressing

I wasn't sure which forum to post this in since this isn't really an iMovie question, but I figured this would be the best place.
I have an .avi file where the audio is a little bit out of sync. What I want to do is sync the audio back up and save the file to the exact same format it's in WITHOUT having to re-compress or re-encode it. There's a bunch of tools that can fix audio sync but when you want to save the file, it goes through compression. This file is already compressed and everyone knows you never put a file through compression twice.
If anyone has any idea what application would do this, I would be very grateful.

_Freighter_, I support your statement 100%.
I need to cut a documentary shot over 10 days for which I keyworded everything. Now I need to sync audio and I face the exact same issues as you and I don't know how to get started ...

  • How do I fix audio in an iMovie video?

I'm trying to finalize a video from iMovie, but whenever I finalize it, no matter what media I use, the sound for the video clips in my movie are always off. But on iMovie, the videos and audio work fine. How can I fix this??

It is happening on the timeline and when I burned the DVD it also happened on the DVD.  However, I tested to see if it was the camera by linking the camera to the TV and everything was in sync...so it is not the camera.
It is interesting that when I captured the video in one shot, most of the video was out of sync with the background taping sounds.
I may have done a workaround. I have since captured the video in chunks and found that when I do that the alignment of video and all sound are OK except for a couple of sections of the video.
It appears that when captured all at once, the sections that are out of sync, pollute the remaining parts of the video.  It sounds strange, but that it all I can come up with as a rationale. Why?  I have no idea.

  • 9.0.2 update just released, fixing audio sync problems.

Just ran a quick test, looks like it's fixed! Thanks Apple!

It worked for me perfectly! That saves me a lot of frustration after putting a lot of time in editing a project. Great to see it export now and the audio is synced! Yeah! Thanks Apple!

  • Apple, please fix audio problems with iMovie

Ok, I have many iMovie projects, about 10. In one project when I add music from iTunes I can control the tracks fade, volume, everything I'm able to control. This is also possible when I make a new project and add music from iTunes.
So, this is possible in one project and all new projects.
But when I try to add music from iTunes to an existing project (all other 9 projects) the audio controls do not work. I can't mute the iTunes mp3 I can't fade it, NOTHING. Having bought my $6000 mac primarily for iMovie you can imagine how frustrating this is.
    I've tried the following
    Re-installing software
    Deleting preferences
    Clipping audio in garage band
Using different music, including different file types, eg .WAV
It's obviously a bug apple, please fix it asap.

    Hi
This is a User to User forum - Apple rarely drops in to have a read.
Give them feedback if there is a bug (that can be repeated)
    How about this.

If you think getting your web pages to appear OK in all the major browsers is tricky then dealing with email clients is way worse. There are so many of them.
If you want to bulk email yourself, there are apps for it and their templates will work in most cases...

  • Major "BUG" in Imovie 9 - Audio Sync Problem on Export  !

Well I'm a hard-core Apple user from day one, but unfortunately today I'm not to proud about the latest version of Imovie 9.
It seems there has been a "MAJOR audio sync problem on export" in Imovie 9, since July 2009. Apple knows about this bug for a long time now, but didn't release any bugfix yet!
    Here's what it's all about:
It seems if you use the (custom /manual) speed-adjustments and not the preset slider speeds, you will experience (after exporting your movie) annoying bursts of audio from clips that had been set to mude. The strange thing is that you will only experience this audio-bug after exporting, you will NOT experience it in the project playback mode!
    Here's what you can do:
Find ALL the clips in your Project that are Speed Adjusted.
Instead of using a "Custom Speed" percentage, use any of the "Preset Speeds"
    Preset Speeds on the Slider = 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 100%, 200%, 400%, 800%
Then, export your project as usual.
    No more sync issues.
Really hope That Apple will come up with a real BUGFIX soon.
It's a shame that a major bug in a otherwise GREAT PRODUCT, hasen't been fixed yet!
What's wrong with Apple?...this is not one of their finest hours.
Still A BIG fan from Imovie HD,...I'll chance to Imovie 9 when the bugs are finaly fixed!

This is TERRIBLE! I have spent so much time working on this project, and I really don't want to adjust the speed settings to the preset levels, BECAUSE I need to motion of the video to match certain musical points. I can't re-film my video, and I needed this project done TODAY. I made a music video with some kids at summer camp, and today is the last day- the day we were supposed to all watch it together, and now, I've got NOTHING!!!! (Because I can't export it without all those glitches!)
I am MAJORLY DISAPPOINTED on this one. I've made movies in windows movie maker before, and purposely used imovie, because you know, everything on macs is supposed to be better. Well, I guess I was wrong.

  • Help please... Audio sync issues going from iMovie to iDVD (iLife '09 packa

I've tried technical support, I've tried looking online but nothing seems to have helped, so here's the problem:
I have a video/movie, that is around 58 minutes long, I share it to iDVD and the other media formats from iMovie. The vid has music, transitions, titles, credits, etc... It plays fine in iMovie while I am editing it. The problem comes when I try to export it to another media format and to iDVD.
There's a section that has major audio sync issues that I have no idea how to even begin to fix. There is audio and music from the 55 minute mark that plays over the 27 minute mark for a good 3 minutes of video and audio.
I've tried some of the suggestions I've come across but nothing seems to work. Does anyone have anything that they can offer this very frustrated guy? Please and thank you in advance.

I don't shoot 12 bit audio (ever) so I'm not an expert on fixing it or converting it back to 16 bit audio. I can only report what others on this forum claim to have worked (in some cases with marginal success).
The ones that comes to mind are:
    1. video and audio extraction in an attempt to re sync.
    2. exporting back to the camera from iMovie and then re-importing as 16 bit.

How to stop the spinning ball/pizza that is stalling repairs to project on imovie 09? on macosx10.5.8 using iomega and superspeed ext h.d. as storage for the events and projects archive of a wedding video that has had audio sync problems on all share formats (iDVD, mp4, and last of all iTunes). The project label now carries signal with yellow triangled exclamation “i tunes out of date”.
To solve the sync problem I’m following advice and detaching sound from all of the 100 or so short clips.  This operation has been stalled by the spinning ball. Shut down restart has not helped.
The Project is mounted from Iomega and superspeed ext hd connected to imovie09 on macosx 10.5.8.
What to do to resume repairs to the audio sync problem and so successfully share for youtube upload?

  • Audio Video *still* out of Sync in iMovie '11 (9.0.3)

There are several similar threads about this issue, with the final solution being to upgrade to a later software version. I am using the current latest update of iMovie '11 and am having terrible issues with audio syncing.
All of the affected clips are direct-to-iMovie captures via iSight camera and either an external UBS mic (Snowball) or internal mic. The problem happens either way.
Clips range in length from 45 seconds to 15 minutes. Out of say, 20 clips, 15 will be affected, some will be perfectly fine. There is no consistency as to when the syncing drifts apart, but it gets worse over time. Many of the clips drift out around the beginning (between 10 sec and 2 min in) and back in sync 30 seconds or so before the end. When the clips resync it doesn't seem gradual... nothing seems to change, but all of a sudden they're perfectly matched again.
It seems to be consistent that the audio is ahead of the video, but the audio itself doesn't sound any faster (going by the pitch) and the video doesn't look slow.
This is definitely a problem in iMovie itself, NOT in the import. Every single clip is perfectly synced when I view the raw .mov file in Quicktime. Clips export to web perfect out of Quicktime, but are out of sync when exported to iMovie.
On that note, I had one clip that was initially out of sync all the way through change to being back in sync toward the end after restarting the app. (No other clips changed.) I also had one clip speed up to chipmunk speed after a minute and a half and pop back to normal after 2 minutes. I left iMovie open, didn't close or sleep the machine, just switched to Quicktime to edit there... when I switched back to iMovie that clip played back normally (but no other ones changed.)
    - I've tried exporting the Quicktime into a brand new .mov file and reimporting into iMovie as new footage; still no dice.
I've tried detaching audio, this doesn't work. Syncing each clip by hand via cuts is nearly impossible, as there are hundreds of clips, most of them 2 minutes long, and the drifting is so bad that piecing one 45 second clip back together resulted in dozens of audo cuts and nudges, and it still looked bad. (This is an oral history project, so every video is a close-up shot of someone speaking.)  I have been working around the bad clips by trimming in Quicktime, but a many of them need internal trimming and audio manipulation that Quicktime can't do... and it shouldn't need to do it, because I have iMovie. This is driving me insane! Is anyone else experiencing this? Any thoughts/ideas?

I too am facing the same issues and trying to look for good alternatives. Ugh.

  • Large .dv file plays fine in Quicktime, but audio out of sync in iMovie??

    hi,
i'm trying to convert some old analog 8mm tapes to digital. to do this, i'm using a sony trv320 camcorder with firewire feeding iMovie '08. i've imported an entire 2 hour tape into iMovie, and everything is fine except that at some point, the audio gets out of sync from the picture. i've opened the huge 24 GB .dv file in Quicktime, and everything is in sync, so I assume this is some kind of problem related to iMovie. i've done lots of searching on this and have made sure that the camcorder is sending 16 bit audio out. i also tried using mpeg streamclip to split the huge .dv file into smaller parts, but this resulted in the same audio sync problem (which is weird).
is my only option to manually import my tapes 10 minutes at a time? please say no
the most puzzling thing about this is that the huge .dv file is perfectly in sync all the way through when playing back in Quicktime.
i'm at a loss!! hope someone can help.

I've edited in FCP and exported with compressor with all the appropriate settings, to mpeg 2.
Double check to make sure that you edited in Anamorphic and also encoded as 16:9 video not 4:3 - also make sure you set the Track to 16:9 Letterbox in DVD SP.
What encoding rates did you use for the video and audio? Sometimes if the rates are too high it can cause drifts.
On the audio side, did you export the FCP as self contained and make the audio AC3? Also you can try just exporting the audio as an AIF and encode that as an AC3.
How did you burn the DVD (Speed and Media used?) Sometimes bad burns/media can cause issues.

  • A portion of audio that is synced in iMovie, is out of sync when burned with iDVD. How can I avoid this?

I'm trying to burn a simple movie, using iMovie and finishing in iDVD. A portion of the audio is out of sync when burned, despite it being in sync in iMovie. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Hi
Try to - Save as a DiskImage - then test this with Apple DVD-tool.
Does this play OK - burn this DiskImage by using Disk Util tool.
Set down burn speed to x2 or 4

  • HDV imovie projects lose audio sync when burned in idvd

I have 80 min. HDV projects from imovie sent to iDVD, after burning them onto dvd they play fine then lose audio sync after about 60 min. or so.....

Painful in iDvd to do interviews when they happen to fall over the 60 minute mark, isn't it?
If it's of any consolation, it's more reliable in Apple's FCS2 / FCP => DVDSP.
Toast might be another option worth looking at....
    Good luck on this.

  • Audio sync problem as soon as iMovie splits single DV into multiple MOV

The original DV has perfect audio sync. When I split a clip (e.g. delete some frames), iMovie splits the files and changes to .MOV. The audio is now out of sync.
Anyone else see this? Any work arounds?
    Thanks -- Sophie

    Hi
Error -41   mFulErr  Memory full (open) or file won't fit (load)
So if You've really got 40Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk - Others DO NOT count as neither iDVD or Mac OS can use space there for it's temp files.
Then I would close down Mac even disconnect Mains - Then re-start it and see if it got's it's memory right.
    Else
    • Audio from iTunes - use to give me problems - so I do - in iTunes
    • collect the needed audio into a new PlayList
    • Burn this out as an Audio-CD (.aiff) - NOT .mp3
    • Use thge files on this CD in movie projects
    Works for me.
