Fixing corrupt sparsebundle

I've had my Time Capsule for close to 6 months, and now when Time Machine tries to backup, it gives me an error message saying that verifcation failed and I need to create a new backup. I don't want to lose 6 months worth of backups. I have found several sites that provide detailed procedures for repairing the sparsebundle, but it has not worked. Is there any way to repair the sparsebundle so I don't have to forfeit 6 months worth of backups?
Thank you in advance.

There's no reliable method.  That not-so-clear message means your backups are corrupted beyond OSX's ability to repair them.

On the audio book (and podcast) playing screen there is a playback speed selector. It is the box on the right hand side of the screen right below the scrubber bar. It say either 1/2X, 1X or 2X, the playback speeds. Tap the box to cycle through the playback speeds.

  • Fixing corrupt JPG files

Is there any good software out there for fixing corrupt JPG files?

Corruption damage in a .JPG entails data loss and the JPEG format does not contain redundancy, so there's no way to recover what's lost. Usually if the damage is found towards the end of the file, you can "recover" the good part by truncating it. If you want to do it interactively, you can try using software such as [The Gimp|http://www.gimp.org>, or its (very) expensive brother, Photoshop.
To do it automatically (batch mode) you can investigate if any of the tools in the [Image Magick package|http://www.imagemagick.org/script/index.php] helps. Note that these are command-line Unix tools.

  • Current backups locked in "corrupt" sparsebundle!

Ok, here is a weird one!
I've been using Time Machine on an intel imac with a 500 gig external (firewire) Hd since Dec. 2007 with no trouble whatsoever. However, my wife and I also have a couple laptops, so when I learned this spring that you could hook an airport extreme up to an external HD and do TM backups that way, I thought that it would be great to backup all the computers wirelessly, so I got an AE and figured I'd just take the external HD from the iMac, move it onto the AE base station and, voila, everyone could backup wirelessly. Well, I did this on May 1, and although I found the drive with my iMac with no problem and was able to initiate a TM backup, I didn't like how slow it went over the network, so I purchased another external HD to dedicate to the AE base station and the laptops while I moved the original external drive back to the iMac, where I once again enjoyed the speedy TM backups with no fuss.
Since May 1, my iMac has been making backups just fine. I see TM come on, the HD winds up, and backups are apparently going over with no problem, no error messages. However, a couple days ago, I went to retrieve a file and guess what! My most recent backup (in the GUI) is May 1! But, if you look at the TM system prefs window, IT says that the backups START on May 2, and end with the most recent one an hour or so ago.
So, where are all of my backups from May 2 until now? After an hour on the phone with an Apple Tech, we figured out that they're going to a corrupt sparsebundle on the external HD. Turns out that TM operates very different over a network than it does locally. When I moved the HD to the AE Base station and created a backup from my iMac, TM created a sparsebundle, but when I hooked it back up to the iMac via firewire, it didn't switch back to the ol' backups.backupdb folder, but continued to dump stuff into the new sparsebundle file it had created while on the network. However, when I try to open the sparsebundle file, it tells me something about an incorrect socket or some such error.
So here is my question: How do I get my backups from May until now out of that darn sparsebundle file!?! I understand that there are some things you can do with disk utility and terminal commands, but if anyone can help, please keep in mind that my skills are very limited and detailed directions are in order. If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it!
    So, my question

There's no reliable method.  That not-so-clear message means your backups are corrupted beyond OSX's ability to repair them.

  • Time machine corrupted sparsebundle? how to repair? time machine restore not working

On my macbook pro, after starting with Cmd-R, I erased the hard disk, re-installed Mavericks and I want to restore my back up with Time Machine. I select the NAS where the backup is, it sees the backup file but it says: "There is a problem with this backup and it can't be restored". I also copied the backup file (with extension sparsebundle) to another external hard disk and tried to use it from there but I have the same problem. With my iMac (as the laptop is not usable since I started it with cmd-R), when I double click on the backup file (ext sparsebundle), it mounts and I can actually see and access the files that are there. I do not understand why the restore is not working with the Time Machine. It seems the sparsebundle is corrupted. I tried these instructions: http://www.garth.org/archives/2011,08,27,169,fix-time-machine-sparsebundle-nas-b ased-backup-errors.html
But I am stuck at this step: tail -f /var/log/fsck_hfs.log
    iMac-6:~ root# tail -f /var/log/fsck_hfs.log
/dev/rdisk3s2: ** Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    /dev/rdisk3s2: ** Detected a case-sensitive volume.
/dev/rdisk3s2:    The volume name is Time Machine Backups
/dev/rdisk3s2: ** Checking extents overflow file.
    /dev/rdisk3s2: ** Checking catalog file.
    /dev/rdisk3s2:    Invalid key length
    /dev/rdisk3s2: (4, 57529)
/dev/rdisk3s2: ** The volume Time Machine Backups could not be verified completely.
Nothing seems to happen even after a few hours (like 3 hours). The sparsebundle bakcup file is about 200 GB big. It does not seem to do anything as I do not notice any disk activity.
Could someone please advise how to do the restore with the Time Machine or how I can repair the backup file?

Well, if Time Machine is the only thing on that hard drive and there is only one partition, sooner or later, Time Machine will fill up the entire thing and you can't use it for anything else.
Now, you can start over, but that will mean that your Time machine backups will be wiped out. If that is what you want, it is a rather easy process easily accomplished in Disk Utility:
With hard drive connected, open Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities). Highlight the Time Machine hard drive (the top entry for it). Click on the Partition tab. In the window, pick 2 partitions under the "volume scheme" and then slide the little thing at the bottom to adjust the size of each partition. Make sure the format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and, under options, click the GUID partition scheme. Name each one (i.e. "Time Machine" and "backups") and click "apply". Disk Utility will first erase the drive and then create 2 partitions (2 totally separate drives so to speak). You're done.....
You can then set up the one for Time Machine and the other to drag over whatever files you want.

  • How can i delete a corrupted sparsebundle file

My TimeCapsule sparsebundle file is corrupt and cannot be opened by TimeMachine anymore. However I cannot delete it either, error message: "The process could not be completed as the object "bands" is in use." (my translation from my German original: "Der Vorgang konnte nicht abgeschlossen werden, da das Objekt "bands" in Verwendung ist")
ANY IDEA HOW I CAN DELETE THAT SPARSEBUNDLE WITHOUT FORMATTING EVERYTHING?
Maybe you need the whole story to come up with some good ideas, this is how it came:
    - I bought a new 500GB TimeCapsule and tried to do a first backup. It ran the whole night through and wasnt done the next morning. However I had to leave to work and had to cancel it at 80% or so.
    - I tried it again on the weekend, but hat to cancel again after dozens of hours of slow backup without success. Finally the sparsebundle file had grown to several hundred GB and I thought I better delete it before trying to backup again.
    - Hence: I picked the file and delete, confirmed that it would be deleted straight away (without being moved to the basket before), it started deleting but stopped half way.
    - SO NOW: i can neither use the file through timemachine, nor get rid of the file to start timemachine again.
Thanks in advance for your ideas...

I tried downgrading the firmware back to 7.3 and that didn't work for me either, neither did resetting the Time Capsule.
It ended up that my sparsebundle was in indeed corrupted (for the 2nd time now) which is completely crazy to me!...
I did find out *WHY my sparsebundle kept getting corrupted*:
I learned that when time machine is turned on, if the computer goes to sleep, about 50% of the time, that will "corrupt" the sparsebundle!
What I had to do last night was delete my sparsebundle (again) and then do the dreaded, long "first backup" all over (overnight).
I made a point to go to the "*energy saver*" on my preferences to change the settings on it so that it wouldn't put the MacBook to sleep (both on the battery and power options) so that my sparsebundle won't get corrupted again!
This was really frustrating, and that little piece of information should be included with the Time Capsule for consumers so that they can avoid the frustrations that we've all apparently been having. I'm suprised at Apple, and a little disappointed in all of the time that I spent/lost dealing with the Time Machine and Time Capsule.
    Hope this helps :0l

  • "zip" Terminal command no help fixing corrupt zip file; any other workarounds?

I downloaded a ".zip" file containing some files that I need to access.
When I double-click on it, I get the "Unable to unarchive 'xyz.zip' into '[foldername].' ( Error 1 - Operation not permitted )" message, which many people report when they try to open a corrupt zip file.
I also tried opening the file with "StuffIt Expander," "Archive Utility," and "The Unarchiver," as well as some specialty zip-compression programs, but none were successful.
I then installed the very useful "Archive.qlgenerator" plugin (http://homepage.mac.com/xdd/software/archive/) which allowed me to at least see inside the zip file using OSX's "QuickLook" feature. Lo and behold, all the files that were supposed to be in the zip file are indeed in there, as they should be. The problem is not that the zip file is empty, the problem is that it has become corrupted somehow.
So, what I need to do is either "fix" the corrupted zip file, or alternately find some way to extract the needed files using brute force.
Following tips given on various forums, I tried using OSX's "zip" command in terminal (http://homepage.mac.com/kelleherk/iblog/C1901548470/E731143104/index.html and http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showthread.php?t=132146). I was able to use it properly, but unfortunately neither the "-F" nor the "-FF" commands were of any helping in "fixing" the zip file. The "-F" command incorrectly said that the zip file was empty and that there was nothing to fix; the stronger "-FF" command came back with
    Could not find:
      xzy.z01
Hit c      (change path to where this split file is)
        s      (skip this split)
        q      (abort archive - quit)
e      (end this archive - no more splits)
z      (look for .zip split - the last split)
or ENTER  (try reading this split again):
...but none of the options produced any result. Pressing "z" gave me
    Could not find or open
      xyz.zip
...which means that even "-FF" could not get past whatever problem had corrupted the file.
So: is there any built-in way for Mac OSX to fix or extract the contents of a zip file corrupted like this?
Alternately, is there any third-party shareware or freeware that will do the trick?
(I don't want to have to spend big $$$ on a commercial program since all I need to do is open a single zip file. And there is no way to contact the zip file's original creator, so I can't download an uncorrupted version.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Mark:
When I try your first suggestion in Terminal ("unzip -t /path/to/file"), I get this message:
    Archive:  /xyz.zip
End-of-central-directory signature not found.  Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive.  In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
unzip:  cannot find zipfile directory in one of /xyz.zip or
/xyz.zip.zip, and cannot find /xyz.zip.ZIP, period.
When I try your second suggestion ("unzip -l /path/to/file"), I get the exact same error message. (And yes, I am fixing "/path/to/file" to be the correct path to the actual file).
And no, it is not really part of a multi-part archive. (Or at least it wasn't supposed to be; only one zip file is available, and there was only supposed to one.) Perhaps the zip was mis-encoded in the first place, so that the person who created it accidentally did something wrong which the unzip applications are interpreting as this file being part of a multi-part archive; but even so, all I have is this one file, so I need to fix it as is, or extract its contents as is, since I have no way to contact the original creator to do it right this time.

  • How to fix corrupt dll files

    Happy New Year!
May it bring all of us, Good Health, Happiness, Harmony & Prosperity!
I will like to let you know that a few month back, I bought this S10-2 directly from Leveno, USA, but regrettably with in a a few days, I realized that this machine has the following problems:
    1) The "dll files" are corrupt, details are as follows:
    advpack.dll
    dnsapi.dll
    gdi32.dll
    msv1_0.dll
    2)  Power Options:  Control Panel / Power Options / Advance (Power buttons) has 3 options (default)
    a) When I close the lid of my portable computer : Stand by
Kindly note that when I do this my system enters the stand by mode but after an hour or two even when the lid is close position, it wakes up again which I feel is a mall function and need a fix.
I will also like you to know that as of date I have repeatedly restored the machine to Factory Settings with a hope to fix the above problems but in vain as such I thought of approaching this august forum not only to educate myself as to how the files got corrupt but also to find a permanent fix, if possible?
Since I am out of USA where warranty facility can't be availed, hence I do look forward to hearing from a guru, who can bail me out!
Thanking you in anticipation and may God bless you!

  • Fix corrupted Nikon D3s files in FCPX

Shooting video on a Nikon D3s and there always seems to be one or two corrupted files in each video folder.
Video is there, but the small icon is a QT logo instead of a video thumbnail like all the others. These files cannot be imported.
In the past, the fix was to trim the last frame off the video file using the in-camera editor, save as a new file, then it will work.
Problem is, the cards were re-formatted long ago. Tried simply placing the video file on a card and putting that card in the camera, but the camera sees it as a blank card.
    Is there a way to:
Get these video files back on a card that the camera will recognize, or...
Somehow fix the corrupted files in the computer?

No, they just have the red panes indicating that the projects are not linked to their source media.
After reviewing the White Paper on updating to 10.1 (something I should have done before updating) I think I can update my backup version then move the (hopefully) uncorrupted events over.  In the end, these are old events that I already have edited and published, so it's not that big of a deal.

  • How to fix corrupt keychain permissions?

My keychain permissions have been corrupted. Anyone know how to fix this? Keychain First Aid as well as repairing disk permissions didn't help. What I have also tried, though without success, is starting up from the recovery partition and repair both, home folder & ACL permissions from there. Nothing worked. Any help welcome as I am getting more & more worried.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.

  • How can i fix corrupted logins.json file ?

Hello. My computer had crashed. So i installed another windows on crashed C drive
Later i copied my entire profile folder to another drive and reinstalled windows clean
Now i copied back my entire firefox folder
Everything works however firefox can't see any passwords. It creates are file logins.json.corrupt
When i check file with notepad++ i can see saved password sites etc.
So maybe only small part of it is corrupted however i don't know how to fix
How can i fix it ? It is extremely important for me
At least save the working part of the file

Firefox 32 and later builds store the passwords in the logins.json file in the profile folder and no longer use the signons.sqlite file. You can force Firefox to reimport the passwords from the signons.sqlite file.
    • reset the '''signon.importedFromSqlite''' pref on the '''about:config''' page to the default value via the right-click context menu
    • delete the '''logins.json''' file in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed
When you restart Firefox then you should have the '''signon.importedFromSqlite''' pref with the value set to true and you should have the passwords imported in the Password Manager unless there may have been errors.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

  • Fixing corrupted video files

    Hello,
So an unusual thing has happened to a project I have been working on in iMovie'11. I hope I can explain it properly, since the circumstances seems quite complex (to this layman at least).
It began when I tried speeding up one of the clips I was using. When I applied this function, it corrupted the project: when spooling through the clips in the project editor, the corresponding video didn't appear in the screen to the right, so I couldn't edit it any more. So I undid the Change Speed edit, shut down iMovie and restarted it, hoping that I could pick up again from where I left off, without the final speed change edit. I have done this a number of times when this problem occurs, and it usually works.
Unfortunately, this time, the project was still corrupted. In fact, all the projects I was working on, bar one, were corrupted, and I could no longer edit them. I couldn't even go into any of the projects, since the text in the button at the top left saying "Edit Project" was grey and didn't respond to clicks.
Trying to salvage the project, I removed the New Event folder from the iMovie Event folder in Finder, and restarted iMovie. When it started, I was now able to enter my projects although of course, without any clips in the iMovie Event folder, I could only look at the individual thumbnail clips, and couldn't spool through them.
I copied the clips from the project I was working on, created a new project and pasted them into that. Then I put the New Event folder back into the iMovie Event folder, and imported another clip. After I did this, I was actually able to work on the clips from my original project in the new project again. It seemed that the clips from my project were linking to the files in the iMovie Event folder, and the thumbnail files too. I thought I'd managed to save the project, but when I restarted iMovie the next day, the formerly working project was corrupted again.
I know that the clips are there, organised and edited in the way I want them, but I think they are having trouble linking to their corresponding clips in the iMovie Event folder. In the event library in the bottom half, the bits of the clips I am using for this project are marked out in orange lines at the bottom of the thumbnails, as it would with a properly functioning project. So in a sense, the programme "knows" what clips I am using and where, but unless I can edit them properly in the project editor, I can't do anything with it, and certainly can't export it.
I hope I've managed to explain this problem in a way that makes sense, and will be very grateful for your help.
    Thank you very much.

    I'm having the same problem!
Help! I don't know how to fix it & have spent so much time on this. I just don't know
what's wrong! It have many video clips in my project & had noticed that the viewer
window wasn't playing the events but didn't worry about it. Added more clips to
my project, photos, music & then POOF! One by one the videos in the project are
corrupted! Tried re-importing directly into iMovie then reinserting into the project.
That works but another video will corrupt. Also tried copying project & erasing the
    original. That didn't work!
To try to fix this I tried erasing the plist file thing that some threads mention. It
didn't work. All the events are iPhoto videos - does this have something to do with
    it?!
I don't know what to do & have many, many videos to process. I went out & bought
FCE (Final Cut Express) to try to continue w/o iMovie but even when I've learned FCE
iMovie will still have things I want to use!
Anyone out here have the solution?? Maybe I should re-install iMovie...

  • [10.9] How to fix corrupted system frameworks

Now, I am a particularly experienced mac user, but this problem is completely out of my depth.
I use a Mac Mini 5,2, and keep its software as up to date as possible.  I have configured the system for maximum performance, using utilities like SMCFanControl to keep it at low temp, even.
I updated my system from 10.9.4 to 10.9.5 as soon as the update was available.  I have done this same thing dozens (at least) of times.  However, this time after the update, many of my apps started showing an identical error:

All the parts showing errors seem (to me) to be system-level libraries and frameworks, which leads me to believe that the ones named were corrupted somehow during the Operating System update process.
What I want to know is, is there a way to fix this problem without Time Machine or a total OS reinstall?  I don't have the funds to afford a 150+ GB backup drive for all my application data, etc.

"just backup everything first - having no backup at all is foolish, frankly."
Of course--I have backups, I just don't have space for an additional 100+ GB of them.  Most of my data is in fact kept on a separate partition; it's just programs that I keep on my boot partition.
"Curse Client claims to be an 'alpha release' for Mac and is also no longer supported (since around July 2013) - so it seems likely that the problem is there."
As far as Curse Client goes, it's one of a half-dozen apps with the problem, including system apps.  Curse Client is simply the only one that crashes so predictably.
"SMC Fan control can do physical damage to your Mac if you forcibly set it too low for the usage on the Mac, take care with that - I'm not sure you know how to manage the Macs internal temperature better than the onboard sensors, especially when gaming?"
    From SMCFanControl's MacUpdate page:
smcFanControl lets the user set the minimum speed of the build in fans. So you can increase your minimum fan speed to make your Intel Mac run cooler. However in order not to damage your machines smcFanControl doesn't let you set a minimum speed to a value below Apple's defaults.
Also note that smcFanControl does not change the automatic fan speed handling at all, merely increases the baseline speed (the "idle" speed) to a rate of your choosing.  If a higher speed is needed, the system will still increase the fan speed automatically.
I have four presets: 1800 RPM (Default minimum), 2048 RPM, 4096 RPM, and 5500 RPM (max available).
Anyway, thanks for the advice!  I'll see if it helps any.

  • Fixing Corrupt File in Indesign CC

I have a corrupt file and all the fixes I see online refer to exporting it to a .inx file type which does not exist on CC version of Indesign.  I have updated my mac software and the indesign app and the files is still corrupt. Suggestions?

Hi, that is always a bummer. We, Markzware, whom I represent, can fix bad InDesign files. That said, it is hard to say what is going on in your situation. Would need more details. What is the error message, if any? What do you mean by corrupt? Are any fonts or images, themselves perhaps corrupt? If it opens for you, indeed, export as .IDML (File - Export). If there is something else, let me know.
Here is information on our Corrupt InDesign Recovery Service.
