Fixing damaged drive/corrupted files

just checking...
I had some corrunted files and could not get past the start up screen. so I've run Disk Warrior like 4 times (taking 10-12 hrs per) and can't seem to rid myself of 2 overlapping files. When I restart I don't get past the grey screen.
Is my next best step to use Data Rescue to clone the drive and then attempt to recover files?
My biggest concern is that I had my files encrypted, hadn't made a backup in a few months, and would prefer nopt to loose all my documents form over the summer. Anyone with experience with this, I'd just love some input/feedback to know I'm not going it alone here. Also, if I buy an external drive for the clone, would usb2.0 be ok?
Thanks

JYblue, welcome, if the data means that much to you then by all means DataRescue should be your next move. Because the more you use the drive the lesser are your chances of a success recovery. So that is total your call, since data recovery software is not cheap. However, the biggest selling feature of DiskWarrior is drive recovery without loss of data. And yes, sometimes it does takes days, you just have to be patient.
And yes, USB is OK as long as it is USB/Firewire, because firewire externals are bootable to Mac OS X. So you can keep a back up of your OS as well as all of your data. If that were the case now all you would need to do would be to clone the external OS back to the internal and you would be up and running.
Also sometimes buying the enclosure and the hard drive separate can give you a little more flexibility and a better price per GB.

  • Help with fixing my iTunes - Corrupt File

I need help trying to correct the problem with my iTunes. I just installed the new iTunes update, iTunes 6.0.1, and now my iTunes isn't working properly. Everytime I open my iTunes, my library is gone. Luckily I saved my library before, but I don't want to keep reloading it over and over again when I open iTunes.
I keep getting a message saying, "iTunes.exe - Corrupt File" with a message saying "The file or directory C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\Itunes Library.itl is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility"
I tried to repair iTunes, reinstalling it over and over again, and running the Chkdsk utility, but nothing works.
I am stumped and don't know what to do now.

    hi Nick!
"iTunes.exe - Corrupt File" with a message saying "The file or directory C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\Itunes Library.itl is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility"
good lord ... okay, if it's not a hard drive problem, let's try downloading some fresh definitions and doing vigorous spyware and virus scans.
    does that show up anything?

  • Reader damaged or corrupted files

    Hi,
I downloaded the new version of Adobe Reader (from the Adobe site) last week.
After that I began having trouble opening pdf files that I had created with Illustrator (I hadn't had that problem before and didn't connect it to the Reader update) - the message said something like 'couldn't open ... since the file is damaged'.  I'd save the file as a pdf, open it to check it was there (which it was), close it and couldn't re-open it again (on my computer nor on a friend's computer) - it also did something dodgy to the original illustrator file so that became damaged and wouldn't open either...
Then other files on the USB stick that I had stored the files on also began to be damaged/unreadable with scrambled file names - I couldn't open or delete the files from the stick either! Now most of the files are missing or damaged - even though I hadn't opened them before they scrambled...
I also lost a number of files on an external drive that I was using to try and rescue some of the files on the stick that looked like they might be okay - scrambled file names etc
So far my computer itself seems to be okay (cross fingers!)
I run up-to-date virus scanning software - which says the files are 'clean'
I unistalled Adobe Reader completely (after my browser started telling me that it couldn't read pdf's) and installed Acrobat - I can now happily open pdf files without a problem.
BUT - I'd like to be able to repair all the other lost files... any tips/hints on how I might do it?
    Sharon

Yep - virus software updates itself daily - in addition, when files started being a problem on the USB I suspected a virus, manually updated the virus software and ran it over the USB as well as my computer - both were 'clean'
Then I also ran them both through some malware software - some cookies deleted from the computer, but the stick was clear (as was the other external drive which is now a problem).... Perhaps that was where the bug was? But I would've thought that the virus software should've picked it up too, shouldn't it?
Although it started with pdfs and illustrator files, I did lose other types of files as well (including word, excel etc)
Since I deleted the Reader (which was AFTER I'd run the virus software), the spreading corruption problems have stopped (I haven't lost any more files/documents) and I can now open and reopen pdfs and Illustrator documents without any problems - though it may just be a coincidence that the two things started and stopped at the same time...
If it is/was a virus that is now gone (or appears to be), is it possible that I might be able to recover them?  Can you give me any tips for what I should look for in recovery programmes/software?

  • Fix damaged Indesign CC file

Something happened to my indesign file and after clearing my cache and preferences, the file will still not open. When I try and open the file Indesign will open normally, then after about 30 seconds close completely. Upon reopening, I get the error shown below in the screenshot. Does anyone know how I can fix this, or is my file lost?

Check out this page. INDDRecovery did its job well for me on Windows (CS3). There's also a tool --  Design Repair -- for Mac but I've never tested it.

  • Disconnected Use(with external drive)= Corrupted file structure

Help. Really like the way LR handles RAW. Big problem for me is that my Mac Book Pro HD is too full. I'm using an EHD from OWC(FW800). If I launch LR with the drive unmounted LR starts verifying files and pulling all sorts of garbage into the LR Folder panel. If I reconnect the drive there is no repair and only a fraction of the files show up with their terminal folder- the folder structure on the EHD is flattened to useless. Fatal flaw? or my error?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Hi Dan- Happy to try and help. It has happen under 2 scenarios, the lrdb files are at MacHD/users/srp/pictures/LightRoom/...irdb in both cases.
Scenario 1: I had a folder with some duplicates in MAC HD/users/...pictures/My Photos/duplicate files. When I would dismount the EHD and launch LR it would pull the dups on the Mac HD into the DB and reference what looked to be temps for missing files as well with fairly random preview distribution. The EHD file structure is OWC/users/srp/pictures/My Photos/files by date.
Scenario 2: I ditched the duplicate folders on the MAC HD (they were not referenced in LR before disconnect anyway) and launched LR. It initiates checking for files and photos again and pulled random preview references to odd files replacing the original folder structure. In this case there were no valid references to pull so it was mostly garbage, it did preserve a few "?" files.
    Folders Panels: http://aktlr.smugmug.com/gallery/2668872#141260988.
Ive included scenario 1 & 2 grabs and an example of a garbage path
My work around is that I delete the lrdb and replace it with a clean copy, better than re-importing everything.

  • I have some corrupted files on my OS9.2. hard drive that won't delete.

My computer is in three sections, the OS X is fine, but both OS9.2 drives are causing me trouble. The additonal OS9.2 drive is purely for music, but originally my audiophile card 2496 was installed on both drives. I had a problem with the sound on the small drive so I uninstalled everything and then reinstalled it all. The music records alright now, but when I close Cubasis it freezes on the small drive . When uninstalling all the music I found I couldn't delete all the audiophile card files that were on the main hard drive - they were in an invisible file marked usr (that is the spelling used) and the rest of the path was greyed out. I tried to delete them straight from Sherlock but to no avail. I am wondering now whether to reinstall the OS9.2 system on both hard drives but need to ask a few basic questions. When I do this will this fix the 'corrupted files' that are already there or will this cause more trouble. Will I lose all the work that I have already done on these files or should I make sure and do a back-up onto DVD just in case. How does one reinstall the Operating System? I have the disc but just not sure what to do as I haven't done it before. Will these corrupted files do more damage to the computer if I just leave well alone - it is a nuisance restarting the computer every time I use Cubasis but I would sooner do that than get into more of a muddle than I am in at the present.

    Hi, peckerpac -
If I deep-wipe the drive what exactly does that mean?
That means the drive is effectively stripped of all data, including the removal of the disk directories. A file (or folder) that refuses to be trashable indicates there is probably damage to the directory. DiskWarrior usually can fix that; apparently not in this case.
Once the drive has been stripped, the initialization process creates a new structure on the drive so that it is usable for data storage, including new directories.
When you say I can't deep-wipe a partition, do you mean that the whole Hard Drive OSX as well will be deep wiped, or does it mean that only the OS9 part that needs it will be wiped?
A hard drive that has been partitioned has had its disk subdivided into two or more volumes. For most things the Mac will treat each volume as if it were a separate hard drive - each volume will have its own icon on the desktop; files can be copied from one volume to another; if each has an OS, each will appear individually in Startup disk control panel and in Startup Manager; etc.
However, although the Mac treats each partition as if it were a separate drive, they aren't - they are still part of the same physical drive.
A single partiton can be erased, for example by using the Erase function in the Special menu in OS 9. Unfortunately all that an Erase does is to delete entries in the disk directory - none of the data is actually removed, including the directories themselves.
A deep-wipe of the drive is part of a broader initialization of the drive; this affects the entire drive, meaning all partitions of the drive will be wiped of all data.
Will I lose everything when I deep wipe the drive?
Everything that is on that drive, on all partitions of that particular drive, yes.
As Grant noted, the Big System Morsels error usually indicates a problem with the machine being able to read the CD properly. Often that can be fixed by cleaning the CD. A Mac's optical drive is far less tolerant of smudges (fingerprints, etc.) on a data disk (such as an install CD) than it is with such on an audio disk.

  • An output module failed. The file may be damaged or corrupted.

Whenever I try to render something in After Effects CC 13.1.1, an error message pops up, saying "After Effects error: Rendering error while writing to file '[not going to disclose]' An output module failed. The file may be damaged or corrupted (-1610153464)."
    Screenshot of the error message:
I tried reinstalling QuickTime (7), repaired it, updated After Effects to the latest version(as I am writing this), checked firewall software, and used other formats such as AVI.

I need some help! Any solutions?.
    Computer Specs:
    AMD FX-6300
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST
    1TB 7200RPM Hard Drive
Windows 8.1 Update 1(with latest updates)
EDIT(11/23/2014 8:31PM PST): For some reason, other projects work for me just fine. I am not sure why it is not working on one project.
Screenshot of a new project other than this I am rendering at the time of writing this edit:

Can other projects can output to the same output location? Yes
Can other projects render with the same render settings (codec, format, etc.)? Yes.
If you create a new composition and just add a solid layer to it with no effects in the same project does it render? No. I still get the error.
Can you render that brand new comp with the same render settings, output settings, output location etc.? Yes.
If so, what effects are present in the offending comp? Twixtor Pro in all the cinematics/clips, Motion Tile and Transform for pan/crop & wiggle, Magic Bullet Looks and Bad TV Warping preset with just Wave Warp & Venetian Blinds for color correction, Gradient Ramp for text, Bad TV Warping preset with everything for effect, Transform for fade in/out, and ReelSmart Motion Blur v4.1.2 for motion blur.
Also, what scripts are you using? Just the Move Anchor Point script I found from one of Mt. Mograph's videos, Summit 16 - 2.5D Minecraft Steve - After Effects - YouTube.
Have you ever installed any third-party codec packs? (I've heard of some codec packs causing weird issues like this.) Yes, (not everything I have, just everything I can think of and find) I have K-Lite codec pack, Fraps, x264vfw, and Xvid MPEG-4 codec.

  • Error message" The file may be damaged or corrupted -1610153464/ also unable to open projects in the background 26:: 142

    Hello everyone,
I hope someone can help me.
    I am using AE CC/Windows 7 on a Dell computer, 32 GB RAM, 64 bit op system, processors: Intel (R) Xeon (R) CPU x5670 @ 2.93 Ghz 2.93 Ghz (2 processors).
So far I had worked on many projects with no problems and then a few weeks ago the project crashed non stop. The problem was overcome when I got rid of all MP3s and converted them to RAM. Again this was an issue I didn't have in the past and I don't recall changing anything.
Now it seems it is impossible for me to export/render out a project into a Quick time file or even AVI. If its quick time I get this message: After Effects unable to render error  an output module failed. The file may be damaged or corrupted -1610153464 and if I am trying to export with AVI I get this message: AE unable to open projects in the background 26:: 142)
This is happening with different projects.
I read the forums and heard that the problem may be a Bug with quicktime and H.264? I never had a problem with it before but again when I try to export AVI I get this error message:
AE unable to open projects in the background
I have a feeling it is quick time related. I have uninstalled and reinstalled QT but still get the problem. It will open old QT files no problem. I tried to download a bug fix update as one post suggested but I think I have the latest which is why it didn't work.
This particular project has a couple of quick media H.264 files. Do I need to convert them? Are they the cause for all of this?
I am sorry I really tried to look for answers in the forums before contacting you here but I cannot find a reason for all this mess, which again only appeared a few weeks ago with no problems for months...if someone can point out an area where I can start looking, I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

update: I converted all the H.264 footage which were in the project to WMV. And I was able to test export with AVI and it turne dout fine (like 10 seconds). However I still got the Error message: "After Effects unable to render error an output module failed, a filme may be corrupted or damaged.  Error-1610153464 " when I tried to export H.264 QT..
I don't know what to do now, how can a problem which did not exist suddenly come up. How can I export a QT file? with AVI it will be massive!
    Many thanks
    Amanda

    Please help!
My Itunes says there is a corrupt file and will not open (IMac 2010). I couldn't fix it by reinstalling ITunes so I moved ITunes to trash. It will not delete from my trash as it is saying "Japanese.lproj" is in use. I have never opened or used "Japanese.lproj". I can't delete ITunes or open ITunes to close the Japanese.lproj, what do I do? Thank you for any help you can provide..

It will not delete from my trash as it is saying "Japanese.lproj" is in use. I have never opened or used "Japanese.lproj".
Interesting. This sort of thing is more common on Windows systems. Taken at face value, one of the iTunes program files (one of the Japanese language resources) is damaged.
I'd try running your Disk Utility over your startup disk. Does it find/repair any damage? If so can you empty your trash and reinstall your iTunes successfully now?

  • I upgraded to Mavericks. I now have a corrupt file in Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle - How can I fix this?

I Upgraded to Mavericks. I was having problems being able to run TimeMachine so nothing has been able to back-up since the upgrade. I have tried using Carbon Copy Cloner to back up the hard drive, and have been unsucsessful due to a damaged file at Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle. CCC takes days to try and find only those files it needs to back-up, so I have had to abort the back-up. I used TimeMachine before the Mavericks upgrade, but with Mavericks, it is not recognizing the old TimeMachine data and can't roll back to the previous software (Snow Leopard?).
How can I replace the corrupted files? Do I need to get a disc from Apple with the OSX software and then reload the operating system? Do I need to restore the operating system? Do I need to load Mavericks all over again and if so, how?

Thank you so much for your recommendation. In the end, I was able to restore from a version of TimeMachine that I had on my external hard drive. I first tried to restore to the earliest version of Mavericks and it had all kinds of issues with my computer being slow and unresponsive. Seeing that this was not going to get me any improvements, I did a second restore to the last version of MountainLion that preceeded the upgrade to Mavericks, and voila, my MacMini is back to its peppy operation. My computer is now restored and functional again.
I am really puzzled why the folks at the Apple Genius Bar could not suggest this. I had taken the computer and back up hard drive to them, but they told me that my problem was data related, and they don't get into data recovery or back-up issues. But that was ultimately what restored my system back to normal. I think they need to be better schooled on the problems that can be solved using TimeMachine. They had my external disk drive and should have seen that it was capable of restoring my computer and suggested that I go home to try that. But instead.

  • InDesign - need a "Fix my Corrupted File" Upload Service

There are frequently posts on the forum for people who have corrupted INDD files. This means lost work and frustrated InDesign users.
The Indesign team should offer a "Fix my File" upload link to its customers.
For each corrupted file, you will help a customer, and in the process, hopefully improve the overall stability of the product (which has issues) and benefit everyone...
Adobe: If you are afraid that you will be swamped with requests to "Fix my File", then you should probably just get out of the SW business now...

Zak Williamson wrote: "If the documents are fundamentally corrupt in some way, theres no way to repair them." and then later "As I mentioned to Casey, it's rarely possible to repair a truly corrupt document"
I definitely don't want this to sound like a flame or a whine, but I find that statement quite flabbergasting. Somebody at Adobe must understand the format of an InDesign file well enough to be able to edit out the specific element that is causing InDesign to complain about the document. I do file repair for another company (www.qsatoolworks.com) whose file format is probably more complex than an InDesign file. In over 10 years I've only had 1 or 2 files I could not repair at least to the point of recovering the textual data.
What led me to this forum is that a customer contacted me to help them recover an InDesign file. They just migrated from a PowerMac G4 with CS2 to a Mac Pro with CS3 and a few of their files won't open. ("ID may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application.")
We have tried them on another Mac with CS2, and they won't open there either. "Something" must have gone wrong when the files were transferred to the new Mac.
(Naturally, the old hard drive has already been reformatted.)
Knowing what I do about file formats (but understanding that my knowledge is nearly worthless in an InDesign file) I have to assume an InDesign file contains an object map with pointers to the various objects in the document. The idea of telling the customer "your 32 page booklet is lost" when the problem could simply be a screwed up pointer is horrifying to me.
Here at QSA ToolWorks we charge $120/hour for recovery service, success or failure. We've saved lots of people from their own recklessness, and created a passionate user base in the process. We've made our product more reliable (and fixed some bugs) based on the knowledge gained through file repair; Adobe could do the same, but if they don't want to provide such a service, perhaps they should consider training third parties to do it.
I'd like to address one other comment above. Harbs wrote "I've been lead to believe that Adobe has utilities (which they use internally) to analyze and possibly fix corrupted files." Of course, I don't know whether Adobe has such utilities, but I suspect they don't. Because I can do Helix database repairs, people likewise assume I have "special utilities" that can fix corrupted files. (We've even been accused of keeping them secret so we can use file repair as a source of revenue!) I don't. What I do have is a deep understanding of the file format. Beyond that, a file editor and a couple of AppleScripts I wrote to display the object fields in a human-readable format are all the 'special' tools I have. If Adobe has any sort of tools for analyzing files, I suspect they are much the same. In other words, without extensive internal knowledge, they are worthless.

  • Strange noise and corrupted files and trouble fixing

hi. forgive me if someone's answered this already, but my eyes are bleeding reading through all the comments without finding a fitting answer. my ibook g3 dual usb has been great all these years. every once in a while i get the "unable to mount" question mark folder at startup and have been able to fix it using the disk utility first aid stuff that came with my computer. but i've also had trouble in the last few years with corrupted files paralyzing my computer anywhere from a few seconds to hours till i have to force shut down. when my computer comes upon a corrupted file it starts making this slight whiny grinding noise that happens as a series of noises - like eeeer eeer eeer eeer eeer - over and over. it immediately stalls all functions of the desktop/computer.
this last time, it happened while downloading a .pdf. unfortunately, after force shutting down, i got the question mark folder when i started back up and none of the utilities or norton disk doctor have been able to fix it. i tried running the hard disk testing utilities and disks, and it keeps saying the hard drive is fine. but whenever i run disk recovery with norton i suspect it comes upon corrupted files and starts with the grinding noise. i'm trying not to completely reinitialize the hard disk until i know i've tried everything. i just want to recover a few things, but i don't know how to isolate the corrupt files to trash.
under the repair function of the disk first aid, it says theres some kind of pdef problem or something, and that it cannot repair. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT I SHOULD DO!!!! P L E A S E. i feel like i've tried everything, including the custom loading of softwar install....
    thanks

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
The iBook would have come with the first version of OS X (likely OS X 10.0.3) installed on it. Using Norton DiskDoctor on any hard drive that has an OS X volume on it can actually cause hard drive corruption. DiskDoctor also reports the OS X files as "errors," so any "errors" it reports are not to be believed (although, as I said, using it can actually create corruption).
Could you please report the exact message you get when trying to repair the hard drive using Disk First Aid from the Install CD?
You may want to try a command-line method called "fsck" (for "file system check") to attempt to repair the hard drive. To use fsck, you have to run it from the command line. Unlike using your trackpad to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. To use fsck:
    1. Start up your computer in _single-user mode_ to reach the command line.
    2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
    3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it will display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.

  • How Does A File Get Damaged or Corrupted?

After a recent installation of OS 10.4.8 and Office for Mac on my friend's G4 AGP (Sawtooth) all ran well for a week or so. Then suddenly Word and Excel wouldn't open. Got error message. Attempts to reload Office provided another error message.
The core of these error messages was that there was a "Shared library error (Carbonlib)". From the MS support site we were advised that "This problem may occur if the CarbonLib file in Mac OS X is damaged or is corrupted." The recommended actions were to Repair Disk Permission and do a restart. If that didn't work, Archive and Install OS X again.
Well, even Archive and Install didn't go well, so we ended up doing an erase and install. Now everything is running well again.
My question is, considering the pain involved in fixing the problem, how does a working OS and its files get damaged or corrupted in one week of light use? If there is something we need to pursue to ensure this doesn't happen again, I'd sure like to know what it is.
    Thanks in advance.
    Carl B.

  • Hard drive error - Corrupt files - Archive and Install?

    Hi
I have been using Onyx for a while and last week it asked me to reinstall the Snow Leopard disc.  I verified this in Disk Utility first and that also advised I had corrupt files.  I installed the disc and all seemed fine when i checked again in Disk Utility.  But now a week later I have the same problem and not sure whether it is a problem with 0SX or my hard drive.  My mac pro is still under Applecare and they advised tonight that I should do another archive and install and if does not fix then to take the machine into my local Apple store.
Red part of Error message is - Invalid volume file count - it should be 362310 instead of 362313 and Invalid volume directory count - it should be 99776 instead of 99773.
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.  - Error: This disk needs to be repaired etc.
Has anyone else experienced the same problem.  I use Aperture 3 & Final Cut Express and until recently had problems getting the two to work together until Applecare helped.
    Many thanks
    Matt

Other people have certainly experienced a corrupt HFS volume header, which is what you have, or did have. It should be a very rare occurrence. If it happens frequently, then your drive is probably failing and should be replaced.
