The simplest way I know of to restore GRUB would be to use the Super Grub boot disk from here .
+1
Super Grub is your best friend
It got me out of some very unplesant mbr/bootloader problems in the past

  • How to re-enable Beats speakers and sub woofer after configured Windows 8/Ubuntu dual boot?

    HP ENvy DV7-7240us
Windows 8 / Linux Ubuntu Dual Boot
No Sound through two front Beats speakers or sub woofer both operating systems after installed Ubuntu 12.10 as dual boot.
Is there a way to at least re-enable the Beats speakers and sub woofer in Windows 8 when I boot on that OS?  I am using the UEFI as the boot manager by hitting ESC / F9,  and not GRUB2 (Linux).
I did update to "BIOS" (UEFI) F.22 concurrently with the dual boot...possibly this has something to do with it?
I would like to keep the dual boot,  but the loss of the Beats speakers is kind of a deal breaker,  and virtualization of Linux seems to be buggy in its own right.
I tried re-enabling the sound through right clicking on the speaker icon in the tray, and configuring Playback devices.  The  only option available is IDT High Definition Audio Codec.  Is there another device listing for the Beats speakers that I am missing?
Only other minor issue with the hardware I am aware of is only on the Linux side, that being no pinch to zoom on track pad, which I try not to use anyway.
    Thank you.

Have you tried resetting BIOS settings to default? Enter BIOS by tapping/holding F10 key immediately after powering on.Reset to Default settings, usually tap F9,check bottom of screen for correct key.Save & Exit.

Roy

Before you do anything else, I would make a copy of the Windows system on to an external hard disk.  Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) will help you do this.
Bootcamp partition needs to be set up using Bootcamp Assistant, from within Lion. There are sometimes problems using third party disk management apps, and the partition order is important too.
I suspect the previous owner should have re-installed his original OS before giving you the computer. Are you saying that there is no Lion on it at present? If so, you will need to get it, or if it was Snow Leopard, the installation disk, from him.   In the latter case, with SL 10.6.8 installed, you can then access MAS to buy Lion.
Once you have Lion installed you can setup Bootcamp and restore your Windows system to it, from the external disk.

  • Can't open PSD file after reinstall windows 7 64 bit

After reinstalling windows 7 stopped opening some files PSD files. I try to open them with Photoshop version 6, it does not work. I tried to open them on the laptop, same garbage. Tell me what the problem is. And how to fix it.
    Thank you.

Perhaps these files were corrupted. I can not say how it happened, but it is quite possible. And the files are no longer open, immediately after reinstalling windows? Or not?
If so, it is quite rare in my opinion. You are very unlucky. Try reinstalling photoshop. Then check these files were opened or not. If not. Then the only option is a special software. I would use on your site this program

  • TS1702 After reinstalling windows, I cannot transfer app purchases to my iphone.

I had to wipe the hard drive on my computer after it got a virus that I was unable to remove. I backed everything up before wiping the hard drive. After reinstalling windows, I installed itunes and synced my iphone with my computer. Itunes recognizes that I purchased apps previously as they downloaded to my library, and I can make new purchases in the store. However, after purchasing an app, when I try to drag and drop the app to my phone through itunes, a little circle with a slash through it appears and it will not let me download the app to my phone. I can download apps through my phone, but I would like to be able to sync them with my computer as well since I have to put music on my iphone and I generally only purchase through amazon. How can I fix this? Thanks!

I am having the same issue. I tried rebooting/resetting my iPhone 4s running 5.0.1. Restarted iTunes. Still unable to update Apps.  Screen is clouded/gray.  Cannot even move the Apps on the screen. When I press/hold an App on the iPhone to make them jiggle, I use to get the circle X on the App to delete. That is no longer available.

  • Windows 8.1 dual boot after image

    Hey guys
I'm having a little weird thingy with my dual boot systems at work... I've been Google-ing a while, but can't find anything about it. Allow me to explain.
I have a classroom with 16 computers running Windows 7 Professional. Because a course of Windows 8.1 will start next month, I have to install a dual boot system in that classroom. So, like normally, I take one PC to my office, create an extra partition,
install Windows 8.1 on it, do the necessary configurations and place the Win 7 partition as default. No problems there.
After the install and configuration, I create an image of the Windows 8 partition, the system state and MBR. So actually, I have an image of all the available partitions, except the Win 7 partition. After creating an image, I'm going back to the classroom
and install it on the PC's. After putting the image of the partitions, one problem arrives and that's the MBR. But after a few commands (bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot, bootrec /scanos, bootrec /rebuildbcd), that problem is solved.
So, everything is ready to rock! Or so I thought... Here's my real problem now. When you boot the PC, you get the new blue boot option of Win 8 where you can choose which OS to boot. Well, when I select the Win 7 partition as default, I get the old DOS screen
for that. Ok fine, not a big problem, but the problem goes deeper.
With Win 8.1 you have two ways of shutting down a PC: either via right mousse click on the start button followed with 'shut down', or use the charms bar. If I do it the way with the start button, the PC boots in the Win 7 OS by default (just as I want it to
be). BUT when I shutdown the PC via the charms bar, the PC skips the "select OS to boot" menu and immediately starts Win 8!
I hope my entire explanation is clear to understand... So, anyone advice?
NOTE: On the source PC (created with the DVD and pulled the image from) is this problem not happening.

    Hi,
You can follow the steps below to check your default boot system:
Press Win+R, open Run, use msconfig
    command to open System Configuration.
After that, switch to Boot tab. Then check which system was default.

Like I said in my original post, the Windows 7 was default. But thanks to Brandon, the problem is solved now.

  • How to sync with Firefox sync after reinstalling Windows? I only have one device.

Just like this user I was syncing only one device. After reinstalling windows, I can't reconnect and I don't have the recovery key...
What can I do? To access my bookmarks, favorites, etc?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately I'm missing the recovery key and don't synch with other devices so I guess that means I'm out of luck...
Maybe this is something that can be added to the roadmap for future improvements. I don't see a reason why you can't get your information back after a reset if you've only got one device.

  • Sync problem after reinstalling windows

Last week I had Windows XP with the latest version of iTunes and my iPod could sync without any problems. But after I installed Windows 7, even if I have the same iTunes version, it won't sync anymore. I even tried a reset on the iPod and reinstalling iTunes, nothing works. I don't even get an error message. All it says is this:
The iPod 'Vicky' cannot be synced. An internal device error occured.
The iPod 'Vicky' cannot be synced. A folder was specified instead of a file.
The iPod 'Vicky' cannot be synced. An unknown error occured (0xE8004006).
The iPod 'Vicky' cannot be synced. There are too many files open currently.
Another one with a duplicate file, but I can't get it to appear right now.
It's always a different one. And sometimes iTunes even crashes and I have to reopen it.
    What should I do?

have chosen to manually manage my iTunes library rather than copying all these MP3s to the iTunes folder.
Do you mean you checked *Manually manage music and videos* when the iPhone is selected? This is completely sepearate from managing yoru library. This allows you to manually manage the content on the iPhone.
Can I backup iTunes without actually making a backup of all my music files?
Yes. Copy /Music/iTunes/folder to the external drive.
My problem is that after reinstalling Windows my iPhone now wants to erase itself
So you have already reinstalled Windows?
If so, you cannot backup anything that is not there since you you already erased it when you reinstalled Windows.
BEFORE you reinstall Windows, you need to Deauthorize iTunes and backup /Music/iTunes/folder and all your media.

  • Cannot sync device after reinstall Windows

Cannot sync device after reinstall Windows 7.
It is fine when transfer from devices to itunes, but cannot transfer from iTunes to devices. Computer is authorize, same apple store login on both itunes and ipad, but it just wouldn't allow me transfer the apps.

Was this installed from the CD or from a download from HP?
With one system working and this one not working, it sounds like an issue with the software than anything else.

  • Troubles in dual boot system after BIOS update

    Hello:
    PC: Thinkpad T500
    1. I had for one year Linux Fedora 10 and Vista Ultimate working in dual boot with Grub, no problems at all.
Three days ago Lenovo support recommended I update my BIOS from 2.07 to 3.12, as I had some intermitent Sleep problems in Vista. Then my problems started.
    2. First, after updating the BIOS from Vista (dowloaded the exe, double clicked it, gone through the whole sequence with no errors), upon the first restart, the screen was black and I couldn't get in BIOS with F1 and the same happened during other power-off/power on sequences.
    3. Now, I've discovered that the best I can do is wait for 10 min after restart in order to get a prompt from ThinkVantage, then Grub boots only the Linux system which works OK.
    4. I can't get the dual boot message from Grub, and I can't get any Windows DVD to be taken at boot (I've got full backups from both Control Panel and from ThinkAdvantage backup facility) in order to ru Windows repair.
    5. I can go during the ThinkAdvantage to BIOS, the new version seems there (not sure if completely operational), but whey can't I see it with F1?
Is the presence of ThinkAdvantage something special in dual-boot systems or wrt to the BIOS install? Should I do something special about it? I just don't know.
    Any ideas?

Strange.  I don't have a clue, but I have seen posts here that recoverd from strangeness after a BIOS update by unplugging from the AC mains, removing the battery, and then pressing the power button several times.  The last time, hold the button for 10 seconds or so.
That is really a total WAG, but maybe worth a try.
Out of curiousity, what do you see when grub finally loads.  I take it that it isn't your original boot menu.  Do you have grub installed in the MBR, the boot sector of the Linux partition, or both?  Is the Linux partition (or Linux boot partition if you have boot + root) the 1st one on the drive, or _after_ the vista partition.
[edit] You didn't ask, but IMNSHO multibooting a modern laptop isn't really the easiest way to run multiple OSs.  I run Linux, Solaris, and OS X in VMs under Win 7 on my T400.  They run well, and that approach avoids issues like you are having.  The Lenovo ThinkVantage boot-time stuff and R&R are rather fragile.  Changes in partitioning and MBR configuration can break them.   BIOS and other updates, and Windows repairs can break the multi-boot setup.
There are several ways to set up VMs, but VMWare Player is what I use.  The latest version is free and quite usable.

  • Separately encrypt dual-boot system: Windows+Arch

Hey guys, I want to use a dual-boot system: Windows 7 + Arch (windows being first on hdd). I would also want to encrypt them, but make it so I could access them with different passwords, like if I enter arch, i woudn't be able to see contents of windows, and vice-versa. I need arch to be on LVM, ext4 filesystem(the latter not so important, if it's trouble).
I've come accross this guide: https://aprescott.com/posts/dual-bootin … encryption which describes windows 7 encrypted with truecrypt + arch(on lvm) encrypted with dm-crypt+luks, grub legacy is put inside MBR, truecrypt bootloader resides on linux /boot, copied from MBR after truecrypt installed it there and then replaced with GRUB. With described approach there is windows boot partition and linux boot partition which remain unencrypted.
    1) The question is, is it possible to do something similar but make those boot partitions encrypted too? so the only thing unencrypted would be MBR? I've read that people used Disc cryptor and with it easily encrypted windows boot partition with no trouble. What about linux boot partition? Maybe there is a way not to make separate /boot for linux, and encrypt the whole lvm partition with truecrypt(so truecrypt would install it's bootloader into MBR and i could save it and use just like in the link i gave above)?
2)Another question is for people using truecrypt for whole disk encryption. When you do full disk encryption or system encryption(for example Windows), the only thing left unencrypted is MBR? Is the boot sector of windows partition encrypted too? So in this case it maybe possible to keep MBR(at least the bootloader, without partition table) on separate media.
3)Also, in case of full disk encryption, is partition table encrypted too?
and please, I don't want questions as "Why do you need it this way?". I just want to have full disk encryption, so if the MBR is the only thing unencrypted I could keep it on separate media and boot from it(Disc Cryptor allows such feature), but I also need the system to be split into windows and linux parts, accessible by different passwords. And I dont think the idea of using truecrypt hidden partition and hidden os is good in here.
    Thanks in advance.

3)Also, in case of full disk encryption, is partition table encrypted too?
Take a look at diagram #1 . Mbr and partition table will be not encrypted. You don't want that: there are no sensitive data in there; both windows and linux need to access partition table to know where are partitions on disk; mbr must contain some not encrypted code that will be loaded by bios, since that code can't be encrypted it can be modified (potentially in such a way to hide the modifications from the system), as long as you boot from this device there is no way around it without "secure boot" and mbr singing.
I believe windows boot partition and windows partition can be encrypted with truecrypt (you need to check that, I don't know truecrypt). There still will be some minimal not encrypted bootloader in order to ask you for for key / passphrase, so it is not 100% secure (someone could replace it; search for "evil maid" attack by Joanna Rutkowska).
Linux bootloader (I forgot about it on diagram) and linux boot partition can't be encrypted (again, unless you do: truecrypt -> grub2 / syslinux -> linux, and there still will be not encrypted minimal bootloader).
You see, the problem is always the same: you can't boot from encrypted device. You need something that will decrypt it first.
I just want to have full disk encryption, so if the MBR is the only thing unencrypted I could keep it on separate media and boot from it(Disc Cryptor allows such feature), but I also need the system to be split into windows and linux parts, accessible by different passwords.
In order to secure boot partitions / bootloaders one could separate encryption and bootloaders, keep data on encrypted disk and keep bootloaders code at secure location (i.e. on pen drive attached to key chain). Take a look at diagram #2:
    /dev/sda /dev/usb-stick
    +--------------------------------------+ +--------------------------+
    |(mbr and partitions table) | |(mbr and partitions table)|
    | +----------------------------------+ | | +----------------------+ |
    | |other data / partitions | | | |linux boot partition | |
    | +----------------------------------+ | | | +------------------+ | |
    | |(lvm on luks) | | | | |grub / syslinux | | |
    | | +------------------------------+ | | | | |kernel | | |
    | | |rootfs | | | | | |initramfs | | |
    | | |------------------------------| | | | | +------------------+ | |
    | | |home | | | | +----------------------+ |
    | | |------------------------------| | | +--------------------------+
    | | |swap | | |
    | | +------------------------------+ | |
    | +----------------------------------+ |
    +--------------------------------------+
In this setup you boot your system from usb stick. Bios will load and execute mbr and bootloader from usb stick (and you know its good since you have it physically secured), it should decrypt luks and boot system. You still can run windows with truecrypt using /dev/sda as boot device. I know I didn't exactly answered your questions.
1)so this way i can leave mbr(including partition table) empty on hdd, while having them on usb stick? good. I can put copy of mbr with truecrypt loader on that usb stick too along with /boot partition just like in the link i gave above? So there would be NOTHING left unencrypted on my hdd? i like it.
2)My main goal is that hdd would look like blank if someone would want to check its contents. I've heard using Luks leaves some traces in the volume header?(it's not possible to use truecrypt for full linux system encryption too, right?)
3)How do i properly put /boot on usb stick? Also will there be any troubles updating arch with /boot being on separate media?
    thanks!
