Fixing System Permissions

I (accidentally) changed the permissions of the System folder to "No Access" for everyone. Now after I boot up the loading window fades to a black screen with white text asking me for
"login:"
I type in my username, and then it asks me for
"password:"
but I can't type anything. So I press return and then the screen turns light blue and nothing happens.
So I need to know how to change the permissions of the System folder without having to login....I hope I'm not screwed.

Click here and follow the instructions.

  • I get a message popup saying unable to update because I do not have system permissions required when trying to go to 3.6.13 on my IMac,but I am the system administrator.

I tried updating from 3.6.12 to 3.6.13 on my IMac and get a pop up window that says Unable to update because I do not have system permissions required to update. If I download the latest version and try to replace the existing version it says "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items." I called Apple and made sure I was the system administrator and I am. I made sure that the two other users did not have FireFox open and it still fails the same way.
Note: This problem resolved itself for some reason but I still want to thank everyone for their suggestions.

  • Repairing system permissions

    OK,
I have wondered this already for a while now..
Last time, my microphone from my iBook stopped working.
I thought.."noo..!the wire is cut" etc.
I tried everything from settings etc etc. Nothing.
Then - I decide to try "repair system permissions" from First Aid -pane.
And VOILA! it started working again.
Once, my spotlight stopped working. And there was the same solution.
Why those System Permissions change, so that some things just stop working?
I haven't done anything outside my home folder.
    !?!?!

System permissions come from the Unix base of Mac OS X. Certain users have permissions to access certain files, while others don't. When installing an application that comes with an Installer package, that installer might change a bunch of system permissions. Therefore, it's good to repair permissions after an installation. It's not your fault.
For your interest: When repairing permissions, Disk Utility might tell you "We are using special permissions..." even though you might have clicked repair a few times. Those notification messages are totally normal and nothing to worry about.

  • Can't fix certain permissions

I know how to fix permissions with the Disk Utility app; by restarting by holding "R"; by restarting by holding "Option"; and by restarting with the Lion install disk.  None of those methods work for this problem.
There are certain permissions that always need repair, no matter how many times I try to repair them.  I can run the repair permissions program in any of tha above methods, and after the repairs are complete, I can run the permissions repair program again and the program will have to repair the same permissions again, as if they were not repaired before.  The files always need permission repair!
I have tried DiskWarror, to no avail.   There were many more intransigent permissions before I tried the permission repair program in Mountain Lion Cache Cleaner, and it got rid of about three dozen of the bad permissions.  But now I am left with the ones the Cache Cleaner won't repair:
    Permissions differ on “System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Displays.menu”; should be drwxr-xr-x ; they are lrwxr-xr-x .
    Repaired “System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Displays.menu”
    Permissions differ on “System/Library/MonitorPanels/Arrange.monitorPanel”; should be drwxr-xr-x ; they are lrwxr-xr-x .
    Repaired “System/Library/MonitorPanels/Arrange.monitorPanel”
    Permissions differ on “System/Library/MonitorPanels/Display.monitorPanel”; should be drwxr-xr-x ; they are lrwxr-xr-x .
    Repaired “System/Library/MonitorPanels/Display.monitorPanel”
    Permissions differ on “System/Library/MonitorPanels/Profile.monitorPanel”; should be drwxr-xr-x ; they are lrwxr-xr-x .
    Repaired “System/Library/MonitorPanels/Profile.monitorPanel”
I have already erased the hard disk and reinstalled, but that doesn't solve the problem.  I know that eventually these problem files will corrupt my computer unless I constantly run the permission repair programs.   Is there any way to permanently repair the permissions on these files some other way?

I know that eventually these problem files will corrupt my computer unless I constantly run the permission repair programs.
How do you know this? That's a baseless assumption. 'Incorrect' permisions rarely 'corrupt' your computer. In most cases it's a minor annoyance, at best.
Indeed, in this particular case, if you look at the permissions, it's saying the files are lwrxr-xr-x and should be dwrxr-xr-x.. the difference is in the first l that 'should' be a d.
What that means is that Disk Utility is expecting these items to be directories, whereas they are, in fact, symlinks (i.e. pointers to other files). That's not a permissions fix that Disk Utility can 'fix' because the file(s) in question don't really exist there.
Granted, I'm a little confused as to why these files are symlinks, or why Disk Utility is bothering to report them at all, but I don't see that it's in any way a problem.
If you're really, really bothered about them, remove the files and copy the linked version of the file into their place.

  • Warrior says it's fixed, repaired permissions, still won't boot

    In chronological order:
Last weekend - updated several pieces of software, and did all apple updates. I think it was already at .11, but I'm not quite sure. Other than Daylite and Office for Mac 04, there are no other pieces of non-Apple software.
Tuesday - Daylite crashes. Salesperson powers off the mini instead of force quitting. Mini will no longer boot.
    Attempted fixes:
Booted from install disc, ran disk utility first aid which located 2 or 3 folder and file errors, which it could not fix.
Purchased DiskWarrior, which ran fine, found the errors, and repaired them. Used DW to check files and hardware, both of which were reported to be fine. Ran fragmentation check, which showed very low levels of fragmentation.
Still wouldn't boot from the hard drive.
Booted from install disc again. Ran first aid again, which now showed drive as OK, and reported no errors. Then I checked permissions. Errors were found, and first aid successfully repaired them.
However, it still won't boot from the HD. It gets stuck at the spinning gear.
Does anyone have any thoughts about what I should do next, short of reformatting and reinstalling?
    Thanks,
    Ross

Certain system files required for startup are either damaged or missing. You will have to reinstall OS X. You should be able to do so as follows without erasing the hard drive:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • How to fix system error 5364 in mac on os maverick ?

    Hi,
I was trying to configure Linksys ADSL router with my iMac on OS maverick. Trying to run the set up disk I get an error message "System error 5364". Please help me fix this.

    Hi,
I too got the same message. But I solved it by just changing the IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.10 for the router and keeping the same IP of 192.168.1.1 for the ADSL modem.

  • How do I fix a permissions problem that's emerged since I created a Snow Leopard partition on my Lion iMac?

I recently partitioned my iMac, which was running Lion, so I could open old files created by apps like AppleWorks. I installed Snow Leopard in the new partition and the apps I moved there are running fine. But now when I'm using Lion and want to save or open a file, I'm frequently told I don't have permission to access or change the enclosing folder. I've tried using Disk Utilty and also manually resetting permissions on my Lion Home folder. All fixes seem temporary at best. I don't know why I'm having this problem or how to fix it.  I also don't know why there's a third (Recovery) partition I didn't create. Can I get rid of it?

Changed the SL username/password combo to match the Lion one. Some problems were resolved but not others. Had to manually give myself Read/Write permission on the Lion partition's Home folder and its enclosures. This further restored functionality--e.g., allowing me to use Dropbox again--, but still left several "bugs." The most annoying have to do with Safari 5.1.1.  Whenever I open it now I get Apple's Support Downloads page, although my Safari Preferences are set for new pages to open with Homepage and Google as my homepage. Also, each time I open Safari, the toolbar initially loads icons for Readability (to which I'm a paid subscriber), but then I get a message saying Safari can't install the Readability extension. At this point, Readability's icons disappear and when I go to Safari's Preferences it no longer appears in my installed extensions list.  But if I close Safari and reopen, the whole routine is repeated.

  • How to fix system scan error on Windows 8?

sfc /scannow has verification 52% completed.
It says "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.  Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.  For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.  Note that logging is currently not supported
    in offline servicing scenarios."
I try to open the log file, but it says access is denied even though I am logged on as an administrator.
This is an Acer Aspire E1-531 laptop, no operating system DVD came with  it.  I would try to avoid system recovery if possible.  Please help!  Doing system recovery I would at least have to re-install all the third-party software including
    Microsoft Office which takes time.

    Healee
I think the "for best performance" may be misleading.  I just removed mail for the lock screen apps and afaik it still remained live.  I didnt see anything in CBS that pointed to the lock screen problem but if SFC cant finish (it seemed
like it terminated prematurely because of a power setting in auto shutdown) it should eventually be repaired.
You should eventually get an OS dvd (for emergencies if nothing else) and that can be used to do a repair install.
I am wondering if a change in group policy or a malware application might be the reason for the locked screen.  You do have admin rights on your user right?
BTW there is a good KB article on SFC and how to read the CBS.LOG file here

  • How can I fix this permissions "Library/Printers-should be 80 group is 0. Permissions differ. And User differs on "private/var/db/displaypolicyd" should be 0; Group is 244?

How can I fix this on my 2014 iMac, please?
Verifying permissions for “Macintosh HD”Group differs on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be 80; group is 0.Permissions differ on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be -rw-rw-rw- ; they are -rw-r--r-- .User differs on “private/var/db/displaypolicyd”; should be 0; user is 244.Group differs on “private/var/db/displaypolicyd”; should be 0; group is 244.
I run the "fix" and it seemingly does, but if I verify permissions again later it returns.
    Thank you!

It's not an error but an informative message that you can safely ignore. it's innocuous.

  • Weird OSX display issues after going to webpage, only thing that fixes is  Perm repair

I have a bizarre issue that i'd love some input on. Late 2009 iMac, Mountain Lion (then Mavericks).
I use Firefox to utilize a real estate website (Fusion MLS) for several months now. A couple of days ago, after i would log into the website and use it for a little bit, the rest of my tabs, apps, windows, would all start appearing as black boxes, or have glitched out (generally black) screen display issues. To be clear, other tabs inside the browser would be black, or partially black, and also the right half of my taskbar icons would be black silhouettes of the icon. BUT, the Fusion MLS website would still work fine. Closing the page, etc, would not fix the problem, it would be stuck like that no matter what i closed or opened, computer would function fine except for the display, but i couldnt see hardly any of the apps so I'd have to shutdown, but a simple reboot didnt fix it. After an hour of troubleshooting, I started off in Mountain Lion when the problem appeared, and in the process of troubleshooting I decided to upgrade to Mavericks to see if that would fix the problem, it didnt. Ultimately I discovered the only thing that fixes the problem is to boot into Safe Mode and Repair Permissions, then i can come back in as normal and everything is normal again (a standard reboot doesnt fix it, when logging back into OSX it would still have black silhouettes and all the app windows would be black).
So after the above I decided to just start using a different browser to go to this Fusion MLS website (Safari). Which worked fine for a day, but now when i go to the website, i have no problems, but when i put the computer to sleep, and bring it back, the windows are blacked out and icons silhouetted. So back to safe mode, repair perms, and then it works again. When i do the repair perms, there are usually no verbose things that it says it repairs, sometimes it says something about the PrinterList being 0 instead of 80, but thats it.
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated, I'm completely dumbfounded....

Now regular Repair Perms doesnt fix it, it has to be Diskwarriors Repair Perms. Also it happens anytime the computer is put to sleep for a length of time and brought back, regardless of whether the Fusion MLS website was gone to.

  • How can I fix a permissions error on my entire Macintosh HD?

Today when attempting to fix file sharing permissions between users on my LAN, I mistakenly changed the following settings:
In "Sharing" --> "File Sharing" I added the Macintosh HD and changed the permissions to "Read and Write
I then selected "Apply Permissions to Enclosed Items".
Ever since I did this, I am unable to open or use my applications, including Finder.
I have since run Disk Utility to repair disk permissions (which fixed thousands or reported errors) as well as a repair disk (no errors were reported.)
After no success with these methods, I finally reinstalled Mavericks. Unfortunately, I am still unable to access my programs or open files (which are still there, just non-accessible.)
I do not have a current backup of my hard drive. Is there a way to remedy this problem without losing all of my important data? Would it be possible to copy all of my files to an external HD, delete the current HD and then reinstall from scratch?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • File System Permissions Don't Allow "Staff" Group

This is just one of the many frustrations I've been having with my new Macbook Retina. I've had a macbook for 2.5 years at home, and it seems in the context of a corporate environment, Mac's are incredibly frustrating. Not to go on a rant (which I inevitably will anyway), I'll just focus on the latest problem I have.
I need to get files off of my Macbook from other machines on the network and home; some of these machines are Windows whilst some are Mac's. The problem I have is that often the permissions in my home directory are screwed. I've never touched permissions, but for some reason, some of my folders like my "Download" folder have had the "staff" group removed from them, so no domain admins are able to access my files in these directories. This would typically be a minor issue as I'd just change the permissions back to how they should be, but frustratingly, the "Staff" group apparently does not exist according to the People and Group picker.
This is obviously one of those many problems that arise from the fact that Apple's thin user-friendly veneer over unix isn't very solid. The amount of inconsistancies between concepts presented by the user-friendly UI and what's actually happening under the hood can make this operating system a nightmare to use.
Now, I intended to submit this via Apple's bug reporter website, but it won't load as usual. To be honest, I wonder if anyone at Apple even know that they have a bug reports website as they don't seem to attend to any bug reports or make sure it's working.
It's a terrible feeling being at the mercy of a company like Apple that don't seem to care a great deal about their customers. In this regard, they're no different to their archrival Microsoft.
Anyway, in my research it seems Apple's half-way through phasing out the staff group. I say half-way, because it's still the default group used by user-owned files and directories, and there doesn't seem to be any replacement. Does anyone know what group I should be using instead of the "staff" group, or otherwise how to add the staff group to these directories with broken permissions?

I have never had to mess around with permissions in the Get Info window, but there are other ways.
Do you have access to the other computers onto which you need to move files? Can you mount those folders on your MBP? If so, you could copy those files over from your Mac.
Can the other users see your Public folder (in your User directory)? You could make files available there for copying by others.
You can go to System Prefs/Sharing and add Shared Folders. (By the way, I'm assuming File Sharing is on, and in Options "Share files and folders using SMB" is checked.)
    Hope this helps.
