Flac files, converting them and iTunes compatibility

I've recently received .flac files but these files have a generic icon (white square) and are not associated with any software in particular. What are they
and can iTunes do anything with them?

pitou
flac is a lossless encoding of sound files. No iTunes can't do anything with them, you'll have to convert them first. Try using Max
http://sbooth.org/Max/
it's Open Source.

  • Flac files converted to alac have muddy sounding bass?

I'm a noob audiophile and I was wondering why it is that when I convert a file from flac to alac that the bass sounds so muddy. At first I thought that perhaps it was because I was mainly using the built in speakers on my MBP and that they couldn't handle too much bass. I tried switching speakers, headphones and earphones and nothing solved the problem. Then I played the original flac file using the songbird media player (it has bit-perfect playback) and I noticed that the flac files sounded much better and had none of the muddyness in the bass that the alac files have. I've read on some forums that an iTunes plug in of some sort might solve the problem but I've not been able to find anything that pertains to solving my problem. If anyone could either explain to me why it is that this happens and/or suggest a solution so that I don't have to use two differnt media players (I'd prefer to stick with iTunes but it doesn't have native flac compatibility) I'd be most appreciative. I have tried using Fluke but didn't like it since I have to open iTunes in 32 bit mode to use it and it seems to make iTunes lag when navigating through songs.

    Andar,
The plug-in you probably heard about is Xiph.  It is far from trouble-free, but you can check it out here.
It is possible that whatever you are using for conversion is soing something not quite right.
I assume you have verified that native ALAC files (ripped directly from CD to ALAC, or purchased in ALAC format) do not have this problem, and it only applies to ones that were converted from FLAC?

  • OS, iOS and iTunes Compatibility

I have some iOS and iTunes updates available, but since all my gear is older, I'm getting hesitant about performing the updates due to compatibility concerns and "end-of-life" issues. I've tried searching out to see what is compatible with what, but for the life of me, I can't seem to find a straight answer anywhere, and I'm generally quite successful in my internetting.
I currently have a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 17" iMac with OS X 10.7.5, running iTunes 11.1.5 (which wants to update to 12.0.1), which is cross-synced with both an iPhone 4 (with it's final OS of 7.1.2) and an iPad 2 running iOS 7.1.1 (which wants to be 8.1).
I can't seem to find any reference as to which versions of what are compatible with everything else. If I update iTunes to 12.0.1, will it still work properly with my poor old iPhone? If I update my iPad to 8.1, will it still be compatible with iTunes 11.1.5? If I update my iPad to 8.1, will it cause syncing issues with the older iOS on my iPhone? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Nothing is “cross-sync’d”.
advices are simply sync’d with iTunes.

    Yes.

You would now be running iTunes 12.

No. iDevices don’t sync with each other.

  • Too many files in Music and ITunes folders

I'm backing up my computer and found that the Music folder had 80gb of music. Theres my space issue I've been trying to solve.
In our home we have two iPod Touches and two iPhones. We have three different libraries and two different apple accounts.
It has a copy of the music in all the different libraries along with the original in the Music folder.
I need help simplifying my folders. Does it have to copy each file to each library? What files can I delete without causing issues? The iTunes library ones?
And once these folders are trimmed down, how can I prevent this from happening again?

I'm not having an issue sharing the music, that's already set up. The problem is that everyone's own pod/phone has it's own folder with the music files in it that itunes saves to when we add songs. At some point I must have checked it to "organize" albeit make lots of copies of the same files.
For instance, I'll have an album by Tom Petty.
That file will be in my Public/Music folder, as well as Public/Music/Itunes Library 1, 2, and 3. Cause my iphone/ipod has it's own sync/set up, as do the others in the family.
I want to delete this excess, but all of the files in my itunes library are pointing to those specific libraries (within the public music folder), so if I went in and deleted, it looks like I'll bjork my library.
But I don't want to have the Tom Petty albums saved four times on my pc. I want to keep our own libraries, I'm not interested in having all the Camp Rock soundtracks on my phone, but I don't want the music saved so many times.
How would I do this? And begin to remove all these files to a more reasonable folder size?

  • Files between iPhone and iTunes not syncronized

I synchronised my iPhone and iTunes. The iPhone give me this info after the synchronisation :
"2 elements were not synchronized. Consult iTunes to know more."
Wher i go in iTunes to know more.
    Thank you !
    MC

    Hello, ckuan!
That's what I usually do: I connect my iPhone to my Mac and I sync it.
However, the "11 elements were not synchronized..." only appears on my iPhone. It tells me to look for more information on iTunes, but that's exactly the point: nothing shows on iTunes.

  • Finding all of my existing WMA's and converting them to itunes

When I launched itunes for the first time, it asked me if I wanted to find and convert existing audio files. I said yes, and the program located thousands of files and began converting wma's. I stopped it after a couple of hours, and everything that wasn't converted yet is now no longer showing up in queue in itunes. Is there a way to have itunes search my computer for these files and begin converting again, or do I now have to manually select every file I want to convert?

You could try resetting your preferences files, but that may start iTunes converting all the .WMA files from the start. But it may not. Not sure.
    Resetting the iTunes Preference Files:
    -- Quit iTunes
    -- Delete C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    -- Delete C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer Inc\iTunes.pref
You may need to enable 'Show Hidden Files/Folders' in Windows Explorer==>Tools menu==>Folder Options==>’View’ tab before you can see the Application Data & Local Settings folders.
This will force iTunes to run the setup assistance the next time you open it. You'll have to go back and re-set any preferences you want changed from the iTunes default. When you restart iTunes, it will perform its initial startup process. You can now let iTunes search for your music files.

  • I have had some songs on iTunes for about 2 years. Recently I have been unable to play them and iTunes has "lost" the file. How do I find it again?

Can someone please help me? A lot of my favourite songs are like this

Depending on what country you are in you can always delete the album and download it again from the iTunes Store, since that is now an option with iTunes in the Cloud.

  • I downloaded new itunes, now my itunes file is gone and itunes will not open,it tells me to reinstal i have done this 10 times and still cannot open itunes! then when i try to repair it it says "A installation package cannot be found!? help!

my itunes cannot be found, after i downloaded the new version of itunes.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • After a backup all music files are invisible and iTunes don't see anything

    Hi,
I got a very strange problem and I'm really lost.
I made a backup of my portable iTunes libray (using a 160 GB Maxtor one touch 4 mini usb) on another backup disk (750 GB Maxtor onetouch III firwire 800). I have my library on a external disk to safe disk space on my MacBook Pro disk. For the back up I use the software Personal Backu4 of Intego Software. The 160GB iTunes disk is Formatted als Mac OS Extended format.
Now all back up data that aren't music files (AAC or MP3 files) was correctly back up, but all music files was like deleted, all artist > album folders looks empty. But, cheking with the disk utility it looks that all files exist and the Used space (36.06 GB) looks correctly and the numbers of files too (some 5942 files). But all files are invisible, folders looks empty. Now is looks that all purchased and CD imported int my library didn't exist anymore: and this in BOTH disks, side by side is the same situation.
How I can come out from this situation, I really don't have any idea how to coming out fron this sad situation.
Hany help is really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

OK, here's what REALLY doesn't make sense.
After manually fixing a lost file, NOTHING in the XML changes. Not one single character changes in the XML file. I diff'd the whole file before and after - no difference. So, basically, it goes out and 'finds' it and updates something that we can't see to repair the connection, meanwhile we are left to think that this XML file has the library data in it.
Mind you, the media file(s) are present and accounted for in the file system - correct name and path and everything - before and after I go Locate the file when iTunes complains about it being missing..
iTunes is so overbloated, we can't even fix stuff when we see precisely how it is broken.

  • Proxy Autoconfiguration File, Authenticated Proxy and iTunes iPad/iPod updates

    Hi All,
Please can someone advise if there is anything that can be done to get iPad/ Ipod updates working using iTunes and an authenticating proxy server?
    Scenario is as follows:
    1. Proxy settings in IE is configured using a proxy autoconfiguration file (PAC file).
    2. The URLS *.apple.com is allowed to bypass authentication on the Proxy server.
    3. Itunes is used to update the devices from a PC running windows as OS.
When Itunes is opened, the connection to the Itunes store works 100%. The iOS downloads using iTunes is also successfull.
    Issue:
As soon as the downloaded iOS is being extracted and communicated to the devices, iTunes fails with an error code of 3004..
It seems like the PC is trying to make direct connections out instead of using the proxy settings in the PAC file.
Any advice / ideas to get this working?

    HI,
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
If you have Safari 3rd party plugins, they may not be compatible with 10.6. Go here for trouble shooting.
If you use GlimmerBlocker by chance, that could be the culprit. Check out this thread.

Same with any Input Managers. Move any files in the /Library/InputManagers folder to the Trash
If you are running Safari in 64 bit mode, try running in 32-bit mode instead. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.
Go to ~/Library/Cookies and move the Cookies.plist file to the Trash.
Try Open DNS - Free / Basic
If Safari still can't open web pages, go to the Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If Safari loads web pages then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.

  • Howto read javaws log-files / convert them to plain-text?

    Hi,
I've recently experimented with webstart's logging capabilities, and it seems to work really well.
However webstart loggs in a xml-format, which is cumbersome to read.
Is there a tool available to convert those xml-files to a format similar to what the Java-Console displays?
    Thanks, Clemens

Yes, as long as you're only dragging AW WP to Pages, SS to Numbers & presentation to Keynote. Fortunately, with iWork '08, translated files open with the original name & the new file extension. In Pages 1 & 2 (iWork '05 & '06) the files all opened with "untitled" - not very friendly.
I do believe Yvan has written some AppleScripts to make the process even easier.

  • I lost project files, found them and lost them again...

How do you recover lost project files in Aperture?  I had them one day and they were gone the next day.

So when you looked in the library tab of the Inspector the projects and albums were not there or do you mean when you looked in a project the images weren't there?
What did the Best Buy associate to to recover what was lost? Knowning that would make this a lot easier.

  • Powerbook G4... 10.5.5 OSX , Itouch5 and Itunes Compatibility.

My son has a Powerbook G4 , 10.5.8 OSX and a Itouch 5.  what are my options as far as Itunes and his ability to purchase music and sync his music library with his Itouch5?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
I'm sorry, but you cannot sync a 5th generation iPod touch with such an old iTunes version (10.6.3). Also, your Mac does not support any higher iTunes version, so if your son wants to sync his iPod touch with his computer, he needs a new Mac or PC with iTunes 11
