Flac files to iTunes

A friend recently sent me a DVD with some audio files in Flac format.
iTunes won't import these files so I downloaded a programme called Switch.
Switch won't convert the Flac files to apple lossless files. What is the best alternative that won't lead to a massive loss of sound quality?
17" Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I know a few people who have used this to convert flac files

Maybe it will work better for you then Switch did.

  • Playing FLAC files in iTunes with Windows 7 OS.....is it possible?

Are there any apps or hacks that anyone is aware of that will allow me to play FLAC files in iTunes?
I do not want to convert my FLAC files to another format to use - it would be too difficult to synchronise the tags and song ratings from the mp3 files (or whatever formats itunes supports) back to my ''archived' FLAC files.
Yet I really enjoy iTunes' playlist functions - no other players compare. I am hoping to have the best of both worlds: FLAC and iTunes cataloguing features. A search through the web and these forums makes me think it is not possible.
Any links or suggestions? Or do I need to choose between FLAC and ITunes for realsies?

Firstly, playing Flac in iTunes is an altogether different animal than playing them on your iOS device and is something you never asked about. For that you'll need to Google "Fluke FLAC" if you're still running Lion or older. If you're running a newer Mac OS I haven't yet heard of a solution for playing FLAC in iTunes and you'll have to resort to a third party app like Vox.
For most FLAC playing iOS apps you'll add your music files via the "file sharing" section at the bottom of your Apps tab in iTunes when your iPod touch is plugged in.
As for Flac Player specifically the high price coupled with some reported problems I heard when looking into it had me steering clear so I can't offer first hand reports on THAT program.
Since it sounds like you've been longing to play FLAC on your iPod touch for quite some time I was simply offering a bevvy of options to do just that I know of, including some free ones.
Hopefully someone will stumble across this thread and chime in with feedback about THAT app specifically for you.

  • How to import Flac files into itunes

    Hi there,
the title say it all. How can I import Flac files into Itunes?
I have a lot of them. I click onto add to library select the flac file, click on open and nothing happen.
    Many thanks for your help.
    regards

Hello CESNET the best bet is to try http://blowintopieces.com/fluke/ I myself don't use Flac files but to any audiophile it's important to hear sound at it's best. Also WAV or AIFF & ALAC you will need to use http://tmkk.hp.infoseek.co.jp/xld/index_e.html to convert into ALAC.
P.S. their is also a simple FLAC player but can't remember it one more thing converting FLAC to WAV will not give you full TAGs. Best bet is to try just one file you've copied ether straight into iTunes or convert & see what's best for you.

how do you import flac files into itunes on a mac?

however, you could also convert the FLACs to Apple Lossless files.  either of these free apps can do that for you.

  • Since upgrading my OS to 10.9.2 I can't play any of my existing FLAC files in iTunes. What can I do?

Since upgrading my OS to 10.9.2 I can't play any of my FLAC files in iTunes. What can I do?

iTunes has never been able to play FLAC.  You may have been using a third party plugin which enabled this and you will have to check if they have updated.  Alternatively the closest to FLAC in iTunes is Apple Lossless.  You will have to use a third party tool such as XLD to convert from FLAC to ALE.

  • Anyone know of (legal) shareware to convert FLAC files to iTunes format?

I have a lot of FLAC files which I wish to load into my ATV, but would not like to pay for the conversion software. Is there any LEGAL freeware that anyone is aware of that can do this conversion? I do not want to get involved in any hack software, though....

In this case the shoe is firmly on the other foot, the Mac has an embarrassment of riches in terms of free tools to convert to/from FLAC and Apple Lossless, these include XLD, xAct, Max, and more.
On the Windows side, I would agree with the recommendation to use WinAmp to convert from FLAC to WAV, and then use iTunes to convert from WAV to Apple Lossless. Unfortunately you are likely to need to re-tag the tracks since WAV effectively does not support meta-tags.
The above is a completely free solution. Another approach which should be easier and more efficient is to use dbPowerAmp and addons. However while you can use the trial version, it strictly speaking is a commercial application. See this page for a good summary http://hddaudio.net/?p=343
PS. You could always get a Mac

  • Flac plugin for Itunes

    Hello
I have some Music in Flac and I want them imported into itunes.
does anyone knows about a pluggin which works. My itunes is configured to import converting to Apple lossless codec so the idea is to be able not only to impot from CD but also from Flac without loosing quality.
many thanks in advance for your always apreciated help.
    regards
    Ces

It would probably be better to use a utility like Max to convert your FLAC files to Apple Lossless, but if you really want to keep your FLAC tracks as they are, you might try Fluke. There are instructions here:
    http://www.simplehelp.net/2008/06/12/how-to-play-flac-files-in-itunes/
though not using FLAC I haven't tested them.
    Hope this helps.

  • FLAC file

I have just downloaded a concert in FLAC format. I was told to download FLAC frontend and then drag and drop the files into FLAC frontend inorder to convert them to WAV. However this does not work. Does anyone know how to convert FLAC files into something that I can play in iTunes.
    Thanks,
    James

Regarding getting FLAC in to iTunes.
A FLAC codec for iTunes for Mac and Windows is available here http://www.xiph.org/quicktime/ that can play OGG and FLAC compressed files. However it does not itself support the standard FLAC file format. This renders it significantly less useful.
An additional plugin has been written and is available here http://barelyfocused.net/blog/2006/10/12/native-flac-in-itunesquicktime/ which claims to get round the file format issue thus allowing you to directly add 'real' FLAC files to iTunes. However this plugin is only available for iTunes for Mac.
It is also worth looking at iTunesEncode.exe which can be used with dBpowerAMP or Foobar 2000 to convert FLAC to Apple Lossless (which can then of course be imported in to iTunes). Since both FLAC and Apple Lossless are lossless formats you will not loose any audio quality doing this.
Apple Lossless can be played in iTunes (of course), WinAMP, dBpowerAMP, and even WMP 10!
I too have seen rumours that the next QuickTime/iTunes will support FLAC but this is unlikely to mean it will be supported by iPods. Therefore ironically Apple Lossless still is the best supported lossless music format!
Apple Lossless can be played by all the following :-
Apple - iTunes, iPod, TV, iPhone
    Roku - SoundBridge
Slim Devices - SlimServer, Squeezebox, Transporter, SoftSqueeze
    Sonos - ZonePlayer
    Foobar 2000 - Foobar 2000
    dBpowerAMP - dBpowerAMP
    WinAMP - WinAMP
Microsoft - WMP 10, Media Center 2005, XBox 360 Media Extender
and others (e.g. VLC, MPlayer, etc. etc.)

  • (How) can I use my Airport Extreme to send FLAC files/iTunes to my stereo?

(New to this topic.) Is it possible to use my Airport Extreme Base Station to send FLAC and iTunes music files to my (ParaSound P3/A23) stereo system wirelessly?
    If so, how?
(Not interested in iOS devices doing this - just, effectively, in using my 'mid-2011'  2.7 iMac (10.7.3) as a music server
    TIA!

Yes, add an AirPort Express and convert FLAC to Apple Lossless and iTunes will be able to play them. VLC will not help since you need iTunes to connect to the AirPort Express and VLC will not work with iTunes.
There may be an exception to this but I've never tried it. You could try using AirFoil to connect to the AirPort Express and play your FLAC files that way but I have no guarantee it will work. AirFoil seems very flexible so it may prove to be a solution for you.
I'm not familiar with the Sonos Bridge/Connect system so I cannot comment on the quality. I understand that it is comparable to using the AirPort Express but locking at the price it seems a more expensive solution for your needs.

  • How do I get FLAC files from a hard drive into my itunes

I have a library of FLAC and shnf files on a hard drive.
How do I get these files (grouped into hundreds of folders) into Itunes?

iTunes cannot play FLAC files.  There are "plug-ins" that supposedly allow iTunes to handle FLAC, which you can investigate, but it would probably be better to convert the files to a format iTunes can handle, such as AAC.
As far as SHN files, there is not even a plug-in (the format is virtually unknown except Deadheads!) so conversion is the best answer.
A conversion tool you can use is Switch.  You can use the newly converted files for your iTunes ibrary, and save the original FLAC and SHN files for when you use a more capable player.

  • Anyone able to use flac dts files in itunes?

Ive just managed to get itunes to play flac files using the xiph bits and bobs - I can also play dts files via digital out on my macbookpro after turning off the equaliser http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93870 but itunes still wont play the combined dts-flac files ie only white noise - Cog will do it so its not impossible but harder to playlist

  • ITunes does not show album artwork for FLAC files

I add FLAC music files to iTunes via Fluke which works perfectly.
Then I add the album artworks to the albums as usual (select all songs/right click/get info/info/then drag and drop a previously downloaded .jpg file). The artwork is visible in the Artwork column, in the Cover Flow but not in the right click/get info/info/artwork.
Which would not be a problem itself, but I use a Logitech Squeezebox Duet and on the controller there is no artwork for albums with FLAC files.
It is only with FLACs, MP3s work fine.
Any idea, what is it all about?
    Thanks!

    I knew that.
That was really my question how to solve it if there is a workaround.

  • FLAC audio files in iTunes - How should I convert?

I want to put some FLAC recordings/audio/songs I have in my iTunes. Unless I'm misunderstanding something, iTunes will not accept that format. Does anyone have a suggestion for the best way to re-format those files to something iTunes will accept (like WAV, AIFF, .mp3, etc.)??
Also, as a side note, I would rather convert higher to something like WAV files as to not compress further and take down the higher-quality audio that a FLAC file provides.
Any and all thoughts/suggestions are appreciated! Thank you!!

    Give this a whirl:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23430/x-lossless-decoder
For a substitute format, Apple Lossless is supported in all Apple software and on all Apple devices, or you can use WAV or AIFF if you wish, though Apple Lossless will have smaller file sizes (than AIFF, at least). MP3, AAC and other "lossy" compressed formats will lose quality.
    Regards.
